Did you know? According to Ticketmaster®, the average price for a Super Bowl ticket in 2019 was $3,295. But even that figure is something of a low estimate, as tickets to Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams were only sold in pairs, meaning tickets cost closer to $6,590, and that’s before hefty service fees were applied.

Why roses are such a
Must-Have on Valentine’s Day
Many things are symbolic of Valentine’s Day. In the 1800s, heart-shaped boxes of candy became wildly popular ways for sweethearts to express their affection for each other, and since then they have become one of many symbols of Valentine’s Day. But one such symbol traces its history back even further than that. Roses are now as symbolic of Valentine’s Day as those heart-shaped boxes, and, in fact, have long maintained a connection with feelings of love. The Ancient Greeks and Romans, for example, wore rose garlands during wedding ceremonies. But the practice of giving Valentine’s Day flowers can be traced to King Charles II, who served as King of Sweden from 1809 as well as King of Norway from 1814 until his death in 1818. During his travels, King Charles visited Persia, where he learned about the use of flowers to express certain emotions. Red roses were used to express deep love, and King Charles shared the language of flowers when he returned home to Europe. It soon became quite popular. But Europeans were learning about the symbolic power of flowers even before King Charles’ visit to Persia. In fact, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the wife of a British ambassador to Turkey, began sharing the practice of assigning meaning to objects via letters she wrote home to England in 1716. Lady Montagu noted how the locals had assigned meaning to various colors, flowers and plants in order to send secret love letters to one another. However, Lady Montagu was incorrect in her interpretation, as historians would later note. Despite her misinterpretations, Lady Montagu’s perception of the flower language would spread, and many people still associate certain flowers with certain emotions. Never is that more apparent than on Valentine’s Day, when red roses remain a popular way for lovers to express their deep love for each other.

Did you know Einstein’s brain was stolen when he died? When Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein passed away on April 18, 1955, he left behind specific instructions when it came to the disposal of his body, according to one National Geographic investigation. Einstein didn’t want his corpse to be worshiped or his brain to be studied, so he instructed those who were responsible for his remains to “cremate them, and scatter the ashes secretly in order to discourage idolaters.”

February Is This is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries.
M
any people have a wonderful resource at their disposal just minutes from their homes. This resource can transport them to distant lands, teach their children valuable lessons and serve as a great place to meet new friends. So what is this magical place? The local library.
Libraries are filled with books for adults and children. But libraries have even more than books to offer, making them an invaluable resource for the entire community. The following are just a handful of the many great reasons to visit your local library.
MAINTENANCE POSITIONS
AVAILABLE The Cattaraugus County Pines Nursing Home – Machias Campus is accepting applications for the following positions:
PART TIME MAINTENANCE WORKER. Must have flexible schedule & the ability to work some weekends/ holidays. Minimum qualifications must be met.
• Reading may help improve long-term mental health. A 2001 study from researchers at Case Western Reserve University found that patients with Alzheimer’s disease were less active in early and middle adulthood in regard to intellectual, passive and physical activities than people who did not have AD. Young adults and middle-aged men and women who visit their local libraries and check out a good book might decrease their risk for cognitive decline later in life. • Reading can improve your vocabulary, even as you get older. Reading for pleasure as a child has long been linked to helping young people age 16 and under develop strong reading and math skills. But a recent study from researchers at the University of London that examined how the vocabularies of more than 9,400 people developed between the ages of 16 and 42 found that vocabulary continued to improve long after teenage years. By continuing to read books from their local libraries into adulthood, adults can further develop their vocabularies. • Libraries provide lots of free entertainment. Libraries are home to thousands of books, but that’s not all you can find at your local branch. Newspapers, magazines, CDs, and DVDs are some examples of the forms of entertainment available at local libraries. Better yet, such entertainment is free to card holders. • Libraries offer age-appropriate programs for kids. Some parents may lament the lack of programs available for their youngsters. Such parents are urged to visit their local libraries, which are often home to many programs that can inspire kids to read and foster their creativity. The scope of kid-friendly programs at your local library is wide and may range from sing-a-long sessions for toddlers to group art programs for preschool-aged children to STEM-based programs for elementary and secondary school students.

Guinea pigs are social animals that prefer the companionship of another guinea pig. That’s why it’s illegal to own just one of the little critters in Switzerland. Thankfully, if one of your fuzzy pets passes away and you’re not ready to commit to another, Switzerland also allows you to rent a guinea pig for your remaining pet.

Learning about goldfish
On the way to becoming fish experts, it’s important to point out that, despite their low price tag and availability, goldfish should not be viewed as disposable. These are live animals and deserve the same care and consideration as other pets. National Geographic says that goldfish are descendents of carp and originate in China. There are hundreds of varieties of goldfish found around the globe. In fact, koi are cousins of the traditional aquarium goldfish. Despite their name, goldfish come in a variety of colors. Commercial goldfish are typically yellow, gold and red. Wild goldfish are almost exclusively olive green or dark gray, according to PetMD. They’re one of the most common aquarium fish and also have some of the longest life expectancies. The oldest recorded living goldfish reached the age of 49. Goldfish come in different sizes, but the average aquarium goldfish grows to between four and seven inches.
Caring for goldfish
Goldfish that are won at state fairs may come home in plastic bags or small bowls, but they are best cared for in traditional aquariums. Goldfish are omnivores that will thrive on a healthy diet made up of pellets, vegetables, algae, and flakes. These fish tend to produce a lot of ammonia waste, so if they are kept in a bowl, the water will need to be changed quite frequently and the bowl should be large. Many aquarium experts say a tank that’s between 10 and 20 gallons is ideal for a goldfish. Such tanks will not stunt its growth and will keep it healthy and comfortable. Goldfish like relatively low water temperatures, advises the fish resource The Goldfish Tank. They should not be mistaken for tropical fish. Goldfish are typically best kept alone or with other goldfish so that their living environments are easily maintained. Also, some goldfish will try to eat smaller fish. A clean tank is vital to the health of goldfish. Filtration is ideal, as is an air pump to help agitate the surface of the water and make oxygen more accessible. It’s important to use a dechlorinator product to remove chlorine and other chemicals from tap water so that the fish can thrive.
Simple tricks to extend the life of your smartphone battery At one point or another, all smartphone users have reached for their phones to look up directions or use an app only to find the phone’s battery power is very low or completely wiped out. Such incidences play out each day, frustrating smartphone users, especially on those occasions when they haven’t used their phones enough to seemingly merit a drained battery. Some smartphone battery issues can only be remedied by replacing the battery or even the phone itself. But many issues can be addressed with a few simple tricks designed to ensure phones aren’t needlessly consuming battery power. • Set up quicker timeouts. Screen timeouts refer to how long a screen stays lit after receiving input. A lit screen is consuming battery power even if the phone’s user isn’t using the phone. Choosing the shortest available screen timeout time, which is 15 seconds on many smartphones, reduces the amount of time the screen is lit and using battery power. Go into your phone’s settings to adjust the screen timeout duration. • Dim the screen brightness. An especially bright smartphone screen also consumes significant battery power. If your phone has it, utilize the auto-brightness feature, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen based on the lighting in the room you happen to be in when using your phone. This ensures your screen isn’t needlessly bright in rooms with adequate ambient lighting, saving battery power as a result. • Disable and/or delete apps you don’t use. Chances are strong that right now your smartphone is runnings apps you aren’t using and aren’t even aware are on your phone. Access the device maintenance menu on your phone to see which apps are currently running and consuming battery power, and turn off any you aren’t using, even deleting those you never use. In addition, access the settings menu on your phone and make sure that background apps aren’t automatically running each time you turn the phone on. • Turn off wireless services. Wireless services, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, consume a lot of battery power, even when you aren’t using them. That’s because, unless they’re turned off, they’re constantly looking to connect. By turning them off when you aren’t using them, you can extend your smartphone’s battery power by a significant margin each day. No one wants to deal with a drained smartphone battery. Thankfully, a few simple steps can reduce the likelihood that smartphone batteries needlessly consume power throughout the day.
