Gowanda Sports Report By Bill Peglowski (GOWANDA, NY)– The week ending Jan. 30 saw the ﬁrst action of the winter sports season in Gowanda with bowling, boys swimming and skiing getting the green light. The additional winter sports of boys and girls basketball and ice hockey were expected to start the ﬁrst week in February with wrestling being moved from winter to spring this year. Two fall sports postponed in September were moved to a Fall 2 season. Those sports, football and volleyball, are set to begin March 22. The Fall 2 season runs through May 15. That leaves a pushed back spring sports season to run from May 10 to June 30. In addition to wrestling, moved from the winter season, those sports include baseball, softball and track. There were two meets for the Eden-Gowanda boys swimming team. Gowanda High School has two swimmers on the team and both

made solid contributions in the opening week. The first meet Jan. 26 saw the team traveling to Tonawanda to capture a 68-29 win. The team was led by Eden swimmers Cody Gemza and Austin Timblin who each earned two first place finishes. Gemza won both the 1M diving and 500Y Freestyle events and Timblin saw wins in the 50Y and 100Y Freestyle. Gowanda’s Christian Merrill took first Place in the 100Y Backstroke with a personal best time of 1:13.24. He also took second place in the 200Y Individual Medley. Merrill also set a personal best time in the 50Y Backstroke without placing in the event. The other Gowanda swimmer, Hayden Kaus, earned a win in the 200Y Freestyle. He also captured second place in the 500Y Freestyle. On Jan. 29 the swimming team hosted Springville. Despite matching their point production from the first meet, the team ended up losing 111-68. Once

again, Eden’s Gemza won both the 1M diving and the 500 Freestyle events. Timblin captured another win in the 50Y Freestyle, but slid to second place in the 100. Springville swimmers leading their team were Blaze Schelble (1st in both 100Y Freestyle and Breaststroke) and Austin Yetter (1st in both 100Y Butterﬂy and 200Y Individual Medley). Gowanda’s Merrill earned two second places for Eden-Gowanda in the 100Y Backstroke and 200Y Individual Medley. His time in the medley was another personal best at 2:47.79. Kaus also earned points for Eden-Gowanda with a second place (200Y Freestyle) and a third place (500Y Freestyle) ﬁnishes. On Jan. 28, home bowling matches for both the boys and girls teams against Cattaraugus-Little Valley were cancelled. As we head into February, bowling will get underway with both girls and boys basketball following close behind.

In terms of baked goods, the top-selling items sold during Valentine’s Day included dipped/covered treats, message cookies, iced cookies, cupcakes, and twoto five-count doughnuts. Wine, chocolate and strawberries also are very popular Valentine’s treats. Those thinking about giving sweet treats this year can consider the following desserts. 1. Bananas Foster: This treat is made from bananas and

vanilla ice cream. A sauce made from butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, dark rum, and banana liqueur is placed over the cooked bananas and ignited like a flambé to create a caramelized dessert. 2. Black forest cake: This chocolate cake marries layers of chocolate sponge cake with a rich cherry filling. It is based on the German dessert, schwarzwälder kirschtorte. Whipped cream often tops off this rich cake. 3. Cannoli: These Italian pastries originated on the island of Sicily. They consist of tube-shaped fried pastry dough filled with a ricotta cheese-based cream. 4. Cheesecake: Cheesecake often is made with a crust of crushed cookies, graham crackers or sponge cake. A thick layer of batter made from sour cream, cream cheese, eggs, and sugar is cooked into a semisoft consistency. Some cheesecakes are light and fluffy, while others are dense and decadent.

Chocolate truffles: Not to be mistaken for their fungi cousins, chocolate truffles are made by forming balls out of chocolate ganache (made from heavy cream and melted chocolate), and rolling them in cocoa powder. 6. Tiramisu: Meaning “pick me up,” tiramisu is the Italian take on a layered dessert made from ladyfingers cookies dipped in coffee and a whipped mixture of mascarpone cheese and cream, topped with cocoa.
