ACCORD distributes food on Wellsville campus of Alfred State WELLSVILLE — As Joe Biden took the presidential oath of office Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C., in snowy Allegany County people were already queuing up for the monthly food distribution. It wasn’t on purpose that Kerri Potter picked Inauguration Day for the food distribution. “I just try to pick a date in the middle of the month that is easy for people to get to,” said Potter, the ACCORD emergency enrollment and service manager. ACCORD is one of the agencies that has been organizing food giveaways during the coronavirus pandemic. The food giveaway was scheduled to start at 3 p.m., but Potter said, people often start lining up in the morning well before the boxes of food are placed in their cars. “It shows how some people really need the food,” she said. There is no registration for the food giveaway beyond posting one’s zip code and age on the windshield. That information is needed for ACCORD to compile statistics to be used in seeking grants. At each distribution, they give away enough food to feed 300 families and rarely have any leftover. What remains after the last car drives through goes to ARC or to the ACCORD food pantry in Belmont. Potter said that ever since the coronavirus shutdowns started, ACCORD has tried to organize two giveaways a month, at different locations — the Allegany County fairgrounds, schools and at the colleges. Wednesday’s giveaway was on the Wellsville

campus of Alfred State College. The food is provided by Foodlink and some local distributors such as Saputo of Friendship. “What we have is predetermined by Foodlink,” she said. The boxes (usually three) contain some fresh produce, meat, and a variety of dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese and sour cream and some canned goods and dry goods. When the Foodlink trucks arrive at the distribution site volunteers, unload the boxes. The volunteers range from employees of ACCORD and Cooperative Extension but also college and high school students and miscellaneous volunteers. Those who want to take part in the distribution need only contact ACCORD to help. In cooperation with the Cuba Cultural Center and Foodlink the distribution sites and times are ar-

The food distributions are open to anyone. “We want anyone who needs it to come to the distribution. TAXES & LIFE PLANNING MONE

Y

MANAGEME

NT

How to prepare for tax season April is synonymous with many things. Many people get their first glimpse of spring blooms in April, while families of faith look forward to gathering for Passover and Easter. Sports fans may welcome the return of professional baseball in April, while scholastic athletes may associate April with the return of spring sports. Though each of those things tends to be welcomed with open arms, one day in mid-April may not be greeted so warmly. Each year in the United States, April 15 marks the official deadline for taxpayers to file their tax returns. Taxpayers in the United States must file their returns by this day or face penalties. Though the filing deadline may be in mid-April, it’s wise for taxpayers to begin preparing to submit their returns much earlier than that. For those who have not done so in the first two months of the year, March is a great time to begin preparations to en-

sure returns are accurate and filed on time. The Internal Revenue Service offers the following advice to taxpayers who want to get a head start on their returns so they make sure they file on time in 2021. • Gather and organize your records. Many people rely on a professional to work on their returns, and April is such professionals’ busiest time of year. As a result, it’s imperative that taxpayers have all their necessary documents ready prior to their appointments. Any delays could force

appointments to be rescheduled, and there’s no guarantee tax professionals will have any open dates on their calendar as the filing deadline draws closer. The IRS notes taxpayers will need their W-2s from employers, forms 1099 from banks and other payers and other income documents and records of virtual currency transactions. In addition, people who received an Economic Impact Payment in 2020 should make sure they have Notice 1444, which includes the amount of the payment and how it

was received, as they will need that to file their returns. It’s also important that people who received unemployment income recognize that such income is taxable, so they will need a record of that income, especially if they did not pay taxes on it when it was received. • Where applicable, confirm your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number has not expired. The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eli-

gible to obtain, a Social Security number from the Social Security Administration. The IRS notes that all ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three years expired on December 31, 2020. In addition, all ITINs issued prior to 2013 with middle digits of 88 expired at the end of 2020. ITINs with middle digits 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 or 99 that were assigned before 2013 and have not already been renewed also expired at the end of 2020. Visit www.irs. gov to learn more about ITINs. • Contact your tax professional. 2020 was a complicated year, and

that figures to create some unique challenges as people file their 2020 tax returns. So it pays to contact your tax preparation professional with any questions you have well in advance of April 15. That’s true for all taxpayers, but especially so for anyone who filed for unemployment, received an Economic Impact Payment or dealt with any other abnormal circumstances in 2020 that could affect their tax returns. Taxpayers may face unique challenges as they begin to work on their 2020 tax returns. More information is available at www.irs.gov.

When a fisherman’s dream turns to reality

By Wade Robertson Every fishermen has fantasies of catching a monster fish, impossibly large. It keeps you going, knowing that the unlikely might take really place, much like winning the lottery. Also, experience has shown almost every dedicated fisherman does tie into one of these leviathans sometime during their lifetime, though they seldom land them. Their names are in the records books, their pictures appear in newspapers and magazine and even on lure packages. Even if it isn’t a record-book fish, the unusually large ones allow you a certain status and renown among your friends. Yes, any cast it might happen, the chance exists. When a thaw and rain hit last winter, I was cutting firewood. It was a Monday and the streams were rising. My thoughts immediately turned to fishing; here was a little winter window of warmer weather that might raise the streams enough to stir up the big ones. I determined to fish the next morning. I awoke around 5, filled the woodstove and went back to bed, but couldn’t

sleep. Before 6 I was back up and in the dark, foreboding morning fishing didn’t seem like such a great idea. I hesitated, indecisive as what to do. Oh, the drag of age. In my youth the thought of skipping a fish trip would never even have entered my mind. This realization fired me up a bit. Dang it, I’m going, despite the long drive! My gear was already in the trunk, it seldom if ever leaves, so I skipped breakfast, chugged some water, dressed warmly and hit the road, the headlights cutting through the predawn gloom. When I finally arrived at the pulloff I was relieved the snow was unbroken, not a tire track cut the parking lot or footprint showed on the path to the stream. I grabbed my equipment and hustled down to the water. The stream, to my surprise, was clear, but high. I’d hoped it would be cloudy, but yesterday’s rainfall hadn’t been heavy. At least the stream was up and flowing swiftly. I immediately walked to the biggest pool. If the fish were moving 1 or more would be holding here. Positioning myself at the best

Wade Robertson photo Not all dreamers may be fishermen, but all fishermen dream of very large fish and landing one. spot I began quartering the pool. After several minutes I cast up into the rapids at the head of the pool and as the silver blade came in sight I saw a nice brown trout turn and quickly follow it. It saw me, though, and turned away. Drat. The wind started blowing and since the temperature was only in the low 30s my hands quickly became uncomfortable. Since the stream was icy cold from the snowmelt the fish would be a little lethargic, maybe I should switch to a small crankbait,

allowing a slower retrieve. But, did I really want to cut the spinner off and retie? My fingers were hurting already. Well, forget the fingers and just do it. New lure on, I began casting using a much slower retrieve with an occasional pause. The second cast the lure jolted to a stop. A hit! I snapped up the 7-foot UL and felt my knees tremble, when a huge, white belly rolled and bucked. I gasped and the 4-pound line felt like gossamer as the weight and

unbelievable power of this fish flowed into my hands, the rod doubled over and throbbing. What was it? Then the fish came up and rolled again and I saw the broad red and silver side of a giant rainbow. Oh, my word! My eyes simply couldn’t believe I had a fish that large on. I gulped, prayed and began talking to myself, trying to keep calm. “If the fish is well hooked and you don’t panic or horse him, you have a chance, keep cool.” I was literally a little scared of this fish. For 10 minutes the huge trout stubbornly sulked, then unexpectedly made lighting quick runs across and down the stream. It was incredible how strong it was and how rapidly it stripped off 100 feet of line, the drag screaming in protest. All I could do was hold on, every nerve stretched to the breaking point. The rainbow then began moving upstream and as I tenderly kept the pressure on it came into sight across the stream. When we made eye contact the fish shot to the top of the hole, his rush

threatening to pull the light pole from my hands. A sunken log lay in the rapids and I was forced to raise my rod as high as possible and pull upward to discourage her. Surprisingly, the light, additional pressure stopped her and she turned, going deep. She bulled around several rocks, the line scraping; my heart was in my mouth, but the light line held and after 20 minutes the trout was in front of me. No doubt she was tiring and hope gleamed. Then the worst part of any battle with a big fish. At least 10 times I had her at my feet. The front hook had worked free, only the rear held tenuously. Ten times she flopped wildly and rushed back out into the current. Now the tension was unbearable, now’s the time most fish are lost. My net was too small, but I led her into it and lifted. Only her front third was in and she flopped crazily, the repaired net rim cracked, the hooks snagged in the meshes. Instantly, I dropped her back in the water and used the net to push her against the shore, put my waders against her sides, stuck a trembling hand in her gills and tossed the huge fish onto the snowy bank. Shaking all over I stared and stared. Was it possible I’d really landed this trout, that this time it wasn’t a dream? I reached out and touched her and then the realization this was all real burst like the sun over me. My soul swelled with pure emotion, an intense joy that seemed to lift me off the ground. Thank you, dear Lord, what a gift! (Wade Robertson is an outdoor writer who hunts and fishes extensively in the Twin Tiers.)

What to do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident Car accidents happen every day. Though the World Health Organization reports that approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, many more people walk away from such accidents relatively unscathed. In such instances, knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath of an accident can help drivers and passengers stay safe and start on their road to physical and financial recovery. No two car accidents are the same, but the Insurance Information Institute recommends anyone involved in a car accident take the following steps to make the most informed decisions in what is often a difficult situation. • Assess your physical condition. The III recommends people involved in accidents check themselves for injuries in the immediate aftermath of an accident. Call 911 if

you are hurt. If you’re seriously injured, try to remain still and only move with the assistance of emergency response personnel. • Assess passengers’ physical condition. Drivers who are not too hurt to move can check on their passengers after assessing their own condition. Before moving a passenger who is injured, speak with an emergency response professional. This person can assess the situation and determine if it’s safe to move an injured passenger or if it’s best to wait for first responders to arrive on the scene. • Get to a safe place. If possible, move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. If it’s safe to move a vehicle and the vehicle is in a hazardous position, such as in the middle of the road, pull it to the side of the road. If the vehicle won’t start of you suspect it could be dangerous to move it, leave the car where it

is and get yourself and any passengers who can move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. • Call 911. If you have not already done so, call 911 once you have gotten to a safe place. The III notes that no accident is too minor to involve the police, and some local laws even mandate that all traffic accidents be immediately reported. Be sure to fill out an accident report, which can be vital for drivers who intend to file claims with their insurance providers. • Turn the vehicle off. If the vehicle is still running, turn it off. Turn on the vehicle’s hazard lights and, if you can physically do so and it’s safe to do so, place road flares around the car to warn fellow motorists. • Exchange information. Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver once everyone has determined that they are not injured. The III recommends exchanging

full names and contact information. Specific information like insurance companies and policy numbers, driver’s license numbers and license plate numbers, the exact location of the accident, and the type, color and model of the other driver’s vehicle also should be exchanged and noted. • Avoid discussing fault with the other driver. Drivers will not determine who’s at fault. Such decisions are made

by insurance adjusters. Discussing fault with the other driver in the immediate aftermath of an accident can lead to difficult, potentially heated exchanges. • Document the accident. The III recommends motorists involved in accidents identify the responding police officers and ask them how to obtain copies of the official accident report. Take pictures and speak with any witnesses, jotting down their names

and contact information if possible. • Notify your insurance provider. Notify your insurance provider as soon as possible. You can even do so from the scene of the accident if you’re capable of doing so. This can jump-start the claims process. Knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident can calm drivers’ nerves and get them on the road to recovery that much sooner.

preferred linens, clothing, toiletries, books, games, and more. When taking such items along, there’s no need to pack and unpack much for any trip. • Follow the weather: If desired, RVers can pick up and follow the jet stream. If 70-degree days are your thing, then follow those temperatures coast-to-coast. If you like skiing or snowboarding, you can head to colder

climates. • Downsize: The RVIA says that RVs are available across a wide range of price points. So if the idea is to trade in a stationary house for an RV, you may be able to do so for as little as $6,000 to as much as $500,000. The RV lifestyle may attract soon-to-be retirees. There are various advantages to getting on board.

The advantages of RV travel Individuals who are approaching retirement or those who already have said goodbye to the working world may find they are ready to make some life changes. Travel is something many older

adults enjoy when they have much more free time to see the sights. Recreational vehicles are great ways for people to get out and about. An RV is more than just a way to get around; for

many people it becomes a lifestyle. According to the RV Industry Association, about 10 million American households own RVs. There have been more RVs on the road in recent years, and there are now more facilities to accommodate them. RVIA says there are now roughly 18,000 campgrounds around the country, and certain facilities are pushing to improve and upgrade campgrounds in national parks and on federal lands. Individuals considering if the RV lifestyle is for them can refer to this list of RVing benefits. • Inexpensive travel (or living): RVers may be attracted by the idea of low-cost travel that doesn’t involve hotels and airfare and greatly reduces their reliance on restaurants while traveling. RVs can be rented for roughly $100 to $500 per day, and RV parks usually run between $35 and $50 per night, according to Allianz Travel

Insurance. To keep the costs down even more, certain truck stops, big box retailers, churches, hotels, movie theaters, casinos, rest stops and other roadside locations will allow free overnight parking. Just verify before staying to avoid being ticketed. • Freedom to come and go: When traveling in an RV, there are no set check-in-/check-out times to follow or boarding times to meet. RV travel can be strictly on your schedule. • Plenty of help: Others who have embraced the RV lifestyle tend to be very friendly and ready to make new acquaintances at campgrounds and other stops. Those with more experience may be willing to share their expertise and pitch in to offer tips for better excursions. • Creature comforts: People who vacation or choose to live in their RVs tend to keep familiar items and essentials on hand. Those can include
