(JAMESTOWN, NY)– Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program celebrated a unique 4-H year at their annual Awards Night held December 2, 2020 at the Falcon’s Nest in Falconer, NY. Despite the challenges 4-H youth and volunteers faced by the Coronavirus pandemic, Chautauqua County 4-H youth were still able to complete projects like community service and many animal projects.

Youth were recognized for their efforts at the annual Awards Night Ceremony.

Awards Night usually takes place in November and is planned by the Teen Ambassador youth leadership group. Families bring a

This year’s event was a “walk through” style, modified to accommodate social distancing best practices.

Families arrived at the Falcon’s Nest and received awards for project completion and participation in fundraisers. They then walked to get a photo and to share their success with

Well, forget the fingers and just do it.

I snapped up the 7-foot UL and felt my knees tremble, when a huge, white belly rolled and bucked. I gasped and the 4-pound line felt like gossamer as the weight and unbelievable power of this fish flowed into my hands, the rod doubled over and throbbing.

What was it? Then the fish came up and rolled again and I saw the broad red and silver side of a giant rainbow. Oh, my word! My eyes simply couldn’t believe I had a fish that large on. I gulped, prayed and began talking to myself, trying to keep calm.

“If the fish is well hooked and you don’t panic or horse him, you have a chance, keep cool.” I was literally a little scared of this fish.

For 10 minutes the huge trout stubbornly sulked, then unexpectedly made lighting quick runs across and down the stream. It was incredible how strong it was and how rapidly it stripped off 100 feet of line, the drag screaming in protest. All I could do was hold on, every nerve stretched to the breaking point.

the pressure on it came into sight across the stream. When we made eye contact the fish shot to the top of the hole, his rush threatening to pull the light pole from my hands. A sunken log lay in the rapids and I was forced to raise my rod as high as possible and pull upward to discourage her.

Surprisingly, the light, additional pressure stopped her and she turned, going deep.

She bulled around several rocks, the line scraping; my heart was in my mouth, but the light line held and after 20 minutes the trout was in front of me.

No doubt she was tiring and hope gleamed.

Then the worst part of any battle with a big fish. At least 10 times I had her at my feet. The front hook had worked free, only the rear held tenuously. Ten times she flopped wildly and rushed back out into the current. Now the tension was unbearable, now’s the time most fish are lost.

My net was too small, but I led her into it and lifted. Only her front third was in and she flopped crazily, the repaired net rim cracked, the hooks snagged in the meshes.

Instantly, I dropped her back in the water and used the net to push her against the shore, put my waders against her sides, stuck

a trembling hand in her gills and tossed the huge fish onto the snowy bank.

Shaking all over I stared and stared. Was it possible I’d really landed this trout, that this time it wasn’t a dream? I reached out and touched her and then the realization this was all real burst like the sun over me. My soul swelled with pure emotion, an intense joy that seemed to lift me off the ground.

Because participation was limited, some clubs and committees chose to recognize youth for project completion. Others recognized youth for going above and beyond for their efforts before the pandemic began.

Stepping Stone Awards recognize youth for taking on a new challenge, overcoming an obstacle, stepping beyond familiar territory, or demonstrating a positive attitude. These youth received Stepping Stone Awards for the Dairy Project: Anna Carlberg, Clara Carlberg, Laine Carpenter, Tyler Crowell, and Grace Pfleuger. Everett LeBarron and Laine Carpenter received Stepping Stone Awards for their

participation in the Poultry Project. Matthew Brown, Corrine Covert, and Jasper Eschenbach received Stepping Stone recognition for their participation in the Rabbit Project. Hunter Bova was recognized with a Stepping Stone Award from the Sheep Project.

Milestone Awards recognize youth for demonstrating continual growth, perseverance, and extra effort.

Dayne Jantzi, Kaitlyn King, Maggie King, Ava Meyer, Cole Nickerson, and Larsen Swan received Milestone Awards for their participation in the Dairy Project.

Gabrielle Koszewski, Riley Palmer, and Louisa Smith were given Milestone Awards for their participation in the Rabbit Project.

County Medals recognize youth who have achieved

some level of mastery in their program area. These youth received County Medals: Garett Catanese – Sheep, Lexus Eschenbach – Rabbit, Kaylee Hodge – Community Service, Maggie King – Rabbit, Miranda Nickerson – Dairy, and Lily Woodis – Dairy.

Natalie Turecek and Kaylee Hodge were recognized for their great efforts sewing masks for the 4-H Mask Task which was a statewide effort to encourage 4-H youth and volunteers to sew masks for distribution in their community.

The Stanley Weeks Scholarship is presented

annually at Awards Night to 4-H youth who are a graduating senior and plan to pursue a degree in agriculture, agriculture engineering, horticulture, or conservation. This year Rachael Harper and Corinne Covert were selected to receive the scholarship held at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.

Youth can participate in 4-H through age 18. Each year youth “age out” of the program because of these guidelines. Youth who age out often have participated in 4-H programming for over ten years and leave a legacy of their own in their respective programs. Youth

Nutrition Educators Share Tips for Staying Active in Winter

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK (January 26, 2021)-- It’s dark outside before you go to bed. You wake up and Still dark! Temperatures ranging from high twenties to single digits – who wants to head outside for a run?

While winter sports are fun for many and a fantastic workout, they are not always the best or safest choice. Short days, icy roads… even hail might just have you wanting to stay in bed!

Staying active in winter is a challenge. The great news is, there are lots of indoor workout options available, and many require little more than a bit of space and your body to make it happen.

“It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned fitness enthusiast or someone who’d like to incorporate more movement into their days, you don’t have to wait for warm weather to get going,” shares Heather Gregory, EFNEP Nutrition Educator at Chautauqua County Cornell Cooperative Extension. Changing your workout routine helps you strengthen muscle groups that sup-

port the movement you most enjoy and will help you be more ready for getting outside on the regular once the weather breaks. “It’s good to incorporate several different types of movement to keep all your body’s structural systems supporting each other,” Heather explains.

Fast-paced moves get your heart pumping and burn calories. If you have space, think about walking laps in any open space available in your home. If you are headed downstairs, consider taking a few trips instead of one! Create your own movement circuit that incorporates running or walking a lap, going up/ downstairs, followed by a set of jumping jacks or any move you like. How many times can you get through it?

Strength moves build muscles and bones, and you do not need weights to do them! Your own body weight is enough to get you started. Try doing some wall pushups, leg lifts, and even holding a plank pose on your forearms and knees until your abdomen and back (your core is both the front and back of your body) can support your weight with your knees lifted.

Stretching helps lengthen and relax muscles to make them more resilient. Try hinging forward from your waist and reaching for your toes (keep a soft bend in your knee to protect your hamstrings). Sitting in a chair or on the floor, you can reach across your body with your arms for a gentle spinal twist. Or try reaching your hands behind your back – even if they do not connect – think about relaxing your shoulders and feeling your chest expand.

Last, and definitely not least, build in a play day!

Get your kids involved in a fun game – even if you are playing catch with a balled-up sock. It is a great way to enjoy some movement and connect with your family.
