By Kathryn Ross WELLSVILLE — From the town of Willing to the town of Hume, the course plotted today for the Genesee River will impact the lives of our children’s children, Brenda Szabo told the Wellsville Village Planning Board recently. Szabo heads up the local Waterfront Revitalization committee under the New York State Waterfront Revitalization Plan. She is vice president of outpatient services at UR Jones Memorial Hospital and chair of the hospital’s Wellness Committee. She told the board the hospital recently received recognition from the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS), which announced that UR Medicine Jones Memorial Hospital has been awarded the 2020 Community Health Improvement Award in recognition of its outstanding Promoting Healthy Lifestyles Program. “The hospital’s community wellness efforts went into high gear in 2014,” she said, “when we learned that Allegany County has some of the highest obesity rates in the state. When we noticed that there were
A river runs through it no dedicated walking trails in the village of Wellsville, it made sense for us to focus on ways to provide accessible, free and easy-to-use trails to help families increase their physical activity, which would help prevent chronic disease.” The initiative included a street agreement focused on safe roadway access for walkers, bicyclists and runners, rebuilding two bridges on the Wellsville-AddisonGaleton Railroad trail, completion of a pedestrian walkway under the roadway at Riverwalk Plaza and approval of a $150,000 grant for Local Waterfront Revitalization for the 10 communities bordering the Genesee River in Allegany County. The grant requires a $50,000 match, Szabo said, and each of the communities — town of Willing, town and village of Wellsville, Scio, town of Amity, village of Belmont and the towns of Angelica, Belfast, Caneadea and Hume — each contributed $5,000 to the project. Each town has been encouraged to think big, Szabo said. “Think pie in the sky” for multiuse develop-

“This planned development of the river is not for us,” Szabo said. “It is for the future of our children’s children and to make the river in Allegany County a destination location.” She noted that some ideas for developing the Genesee waterfront in the county include restaurants, a zipline, extended kayak use, parks, beaches and the development of associated businesses. Szabo also said that a multi-use river trail is also under consideration, which would connect the county to the Pine Creek
Trail System in Pennsylvania, creating a route from Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in Tioga County. After Szabo’s talk, the village planning board, which is in the final stages of developing a comprehensive plan, discussed adding its approval of waterfront development to its plan. The Genesee River is unique, and one of only 60 rivers in the world that flow north. According to the “Geography of New York State,” there is only one river that completely crosses New York state
and that is the Genesee River. It rises in the hills of Potter County, Pa., at the “Triple Divide” near Gold, and from there it flows north about 180 miles until it empties into Lake Ontario. Of its sister rivers, the Allegheny joins the Monongahela at Pittsburgh to form the the Ohio River, making its way to the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River. The Pine Creek watershed becomes the Susquehanna River and flows into Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Marsh went to work for a brief time for the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, but as it is today, there were no road patrols. The Friendship Police Department sponsored him for the state Police Academy in Jamestown. Afterwards, he went to work part-time for the Wellsville Police Department, serving for the next 28 years. Meanwhile, after the ambulance corps announcement in ‘79, Marsh decided to go into business for himself. With the help of his mother, he started the Medical Transport Service that same year. With a converted 1978 Chevrolet van and one other employee, he transferred a first patient on Sept. 1, 1979. “We were an invalid coach service. We had no medical equipment,” he said, remembering that they had a stretcher and oxygen. To keep the infant company operational, Marsh was joined by John Fleischman, Dan Martelle, Earl Whitter, Al Abbott and a young nurse named Annette Kelly, who he married in 1980. His father would sometimes drive for him and his mother would answer the phone and track Dan down. “She’d call me, and I would start calling around to get a crew,” he said. On long transfers a nurse from Jones
Memorial Hospital would ride along and the ambulance corps would lend them medical equipment. Some of their longest calls have taken MTS crews to Wharton, Mass., Long Island, Wilmington, Del., Virginia and Canada. Marsh recalled that when he and Annette would go on a long transfer their daughter, Kelly, would ride along in her car seat. He said the most satisfying part of his work for the past 42
years is helping people he knows. “We can’t go to a restaurant or grocery store without people expressing their appreciation,” he said. “Yes, I would do it all
again.” From that first converted van and anyone he could get to drive for him, the company has grown to seven state-certified advanced life support

New life for old rifle cartridges
By Wade Robertson Today the hunting and shooting worlds are filled with new, exciting cartridges. Modern technology, the AR platform and objective looks at existing calibers have brought about more efficient case design, faster velocities and increased performance. AR case length is fixed, but stubbier, larger capacity/ caliber cases are constantly being developed, outperforming the .223 in many ways. The .264 cartridges were largely ignored in the U.S. for generations, though widely used in Europe. Inexplicably, hunters and shooters in North America shied away from arguably the best bullet diameter existing. Today however, the 6.5 Creedmoor, using .264 diameter bullets, has finally been recognized for the truly outstanding blend it possesses of bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, low recoil, flat trajectory and excellent killing power. The new 26 Nosler, a long-range magnum if there ever was one, also takes advantage of the .264’s potential with awesome ballistics. Why we, here in the Americas, took so long to catch on is puzzling. But, this article examines how new bullet technology invigorates our older calibers, some of which may be
a favorite of yours, Dad’s or Grandad’s. They’ve sat in the gun cabinet far too long; let’s reload and take them hunting. Reloading is a fascinating hobby and allows you to build customized loads for any caliber you own, especially those a little long in the tooth, such as the .257 Roberts, 7x57 Mauser, 300 Savage or a host of older cartridges from those long-distant days of yore. They worked back then and now, but you can safely increase their velocities with today’s revolutionary new bullets, notably the all-copper Hornady GMX or Barnes TTSX bullets. Here, careful handloading can bring Dad’s rifle back into the stand, reborn and deadlier than before. I have a soft spot for the .257 Roberts, not surprising since I bagged my very first buck with that caliber. The venerable .257 was introduced in 1934 and its versatility as a varmint gun using 60-, 75- or 87-grain bullets, and as a deer rifle using 117- or 120-grain projectiles at 2,700 to 2,800 feet per second (fps) made it very popular. The round was accurate, flat-shooting and a pleasure to shoot. Interesting, but what is it about today’s new bullets that will allow the handloader to invigorate his older rifle? Let’s see. My two favorite are
GMX and TTSX bullets. What makes them different? Both are copper hollow points, not lead. On impact the front half of the bullet violently expands into four petals, producing devastating shock. The rear of the bullet remains solid, the bullet’s penetration guaranteed. Since these bullets can’t break up like lead bullets, the reloader can drop a bullet weight, allowing your old rifle to shoot faster and flatter with enhanced performance. Ah, the magic of handloading. Using a 100-grain TTSX bullet in the .257 allows me to gain 200 fps over the 120 without any increase in recoil. My favorite powders all deliver good accuracy with 100-grain bullets. The Hornady manual shows 39.2 grains of IMR 4064 delivers 3,000 fps, as do 43.6 of IMR 4350 and 48.3 grains of IMR 4831. Start lower than maximum loads, of course, and work your way up. I have not tried the 80-grain TTSX, which can be loaded up to 3,300 fps (Wow!) in the .257, but you can bet the farm that copper bullet will not break up on a shoulder and, most likely, exit the far side of a deer hit in the rib cage. That’s not the tame rifle from the 1930s by any stretch of the imagination. Feeling the urge to handload? Another favorite caliber
is the 7x57 Mauser, developed in 1895. The older rifles have soft-steel actions, but modern-actioned 7x57s can be loaded substantially higher. In either case dropping a bullet weight will give you more zip. In my rifle with a modern action and 22-inch barrel a 140-grain Nosler partition at a modest 2,650 fps took a literal pile of deer over the years, many one-shot kills. Today, I’d load the 120-grain coppers with around 42 grains of IMR 4064 and expect 2,800 fps with less recoil. The 7mm-08 is just a 7x57 reborn in a short action, a .308 case necked down to .284, but loaded to higher pressures. Unfortunately, many rifles sold in this caliber were in Model 7 Remingtons with 18-inch barrels. Hunters quickly discovered the short barrel didn’t allow 140-grain bullets to gain enough velocity to reliably open up on deer. Here, reloading the 120-grain coppers are a big plus or even a 100-grain if you place a perfect shot in neck or rib cage. Use a faster-burning powder in short barrels — RL-15 or Winchester 760 work well. The 300 Savage was very popular, but most sit home nowadays. A 150-grain bullet at 2,700 fps was a good round and killed countless deer, but today it’s an antique. The TTSX 110-grain
COVID cases continue to rise as Allegany County continues state of emergency Allegany County health officials reported more than 100 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend and into Monday, while the county continued its state of emergency for another month. The new cases increased the county’s total to 2,211 since the pandemic began in March. There had been 1,952 recoveries and 53 confirmed deaths of county residents at the time of this reporting — although there had not been a new death reported since Christmas weekend. There were 855 Allegany County residents in quarantine on Monday, a drop from the 898 that were reported on Sunday. The county’s seven-day average for positivity in testing for the virus was 12.7%, according to data listed by the state Department of Health on Monday. That’s up from 12% on Saturday and from 11% on Friday. Curt Crandall, chairman of the Allegany County Board of Legislators, announced Monday the continuation of the the state of emergency through the next 30 days. Continuing the declaration of an emergency is a procedural move to ensure the county can keep measures in place to combat spread of the coronavirus, while also making the county eligible for any assistance it might receive through the state. Meanwhile, the county’s
health department said Monday that its two COVID-19 vaccination clinics for this week are full. The department will release new links for additional vaccination clinics when it receives additional vaccine from the New York COVID-19 Vaccination Program. “Please wait for the links for additional vaccination
clinics,” the department said in a press release. “Please register online when these links open. Due to the number of calls the ACDOH has been receiving, we will not be able to return your call.” The department said if you have difficulty registering online, call its office at (585) 268-9250.

can be pushed to 3,000 fps with IMR 3031 or 4320, a devastating round for sure. Your older rifle, of any caliber, may have found the fountain of youth in modern bullet technology and handloading can rejuvenate them once again. If you don’t handload, start, it’s a
fascinating hobby with real purpose, as you can easily see. (Wade Robertson is an outdoor writer who hunts and fishes extensively in the Twin Tiers of New York and Pennsylvania.)

The importance of being seen on the road As they spend more and more time in their vehicles, drivers tend to grow more comfortable behind the wheel. As a result, drivers may be inclined to take certain things, including how visible they are to approaching motorists, for granted. When drivers think of their vehicle lights, they tend to be most concerned with how those lights impact how they can see the road ahead of them at night. Clearly lit roadways vastly improve driver safety, and the right headlights can go a long way toward illuminating even the darkest of roads. But drivers also must take the necessary steps to ensure they’re easily seen by fellow motorists. • Routinely inspect all vehicle lights. Headlights can make vehicles more visible to oncoming traffic, but it’s important that drivers routinely inspect brake lights, taillights and signal lights as well. Such inspections can ensure that vehicles behind and alongside drivers’ own

cars and trucks can see them as they brake or attempt to change lanes. • Upgrade to LED lights. Even lights that are working properly can be a serious safety hazard. That’s because the standard incandescent lights found in many vehicles do a poor job of effectively illuminating vehicles when drivers apply the brakes or put their turn signals on. Lights that fail to immediately alert fellow motorists that drivers have applied the brakes or are making a turn can contribute to accidents, especially when vehicles are moving at high speeds. The new LED lighting technology, which is used in Philips Ultinon LEDs, makes the lights much brighter and more visible than standard incandescent lights, delivering more dynamic lighting for both exterior and interior vehicle applications. Designed as direct replacements for brake and taillights, signal lamps, back up lights, running

ing.com, even tells them where they can buy the LEDs. • Drive defensively, especially at night. A 2016 analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System found that more than 40 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States in 2014 occurred between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. It’s no coincidence that automotive fatalities spike
during nighttime hours, when drivers’ vision is naturally diminished and darkened roadways make it harder to see fellow motorists. When driving during twilight hours and after the sun goes down, drivers can make a concerted effort to drive defensively. Make sure brakes are applied early enough so other drivers have ample time to react, and flip turn signals on long before making turns. In addition, leave
more room between your own vehicle and those of fellow motorists, which can protect you and your passengers from drivers whose vehicles are still employing outdated lights. When driving at night, drivers must remember that seeing and being seen makes for much safer roads. More information about vehicle lighting technology is available at www.philipsautolighting. com.

money. Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. Drivers who learn to recognize the signs that suggest engines might be in need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home. • Vehicle shaking: One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s moving. Drivers of old cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing. That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but no-
tice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechanics immediately. • Sudden gas mileage reduction: Drivers who notice they’re not getting as much bang for their gas bucks as they used to might have engine troubles to blame. According to Pep Boys, a dropoff in gas mileage might be indicative of an issue in the compression stroke of the engine. Such an issue can typically be fixed by having the fuel system serviced, which will clean the fuel system and can help restore the vehicle’s performance and reduce emissions. • Noises: If driving has become as noisy as a rock concert, drivers should take heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Pep Boys notes that noises typically indicate abnormalities in the combustion flow. Such noises may include
knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately. • Stalling: Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles. While old spark plugs might be the culprit,
stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.
