Five years later, Charmaine Lawson continues to demand justice for the murder of her son David Josiah Lawson

On April 15, Charmaine Lawson, the mother of murdered Cal Poly Humboldt student David Josiah ‘DJ’ Lawson and community members held a vigil commemorating the five-year anniversary of the unresolved murder. Members of the community held up signs, chanted and wore their “Justice for Josiah” shirt in solidarity with the Lawson family at the Eureka Courthouse.

Charmaine Lawson talked about the hardship and tireless efforts of trying to seek justice for the murder of her son.

Maggie Flemming, Humboldt County district attorney, who prosecuted the case had dismissed the only suspect in the case because of insufficient evidence.

“Five years, Maggie Flemming, five years,” Lawson said. “We're still here five years later to get justice for my son David

the case was handled and we would like to see the case reexamined and taken up again.”

Arcata Police Department (ADP) released a statement at the vigil acknowledging the five-year anniversary of David Josiah Lawson's murder and they’re involvement in the ongoing investigation.

“It is paramount that witnesses come forward,” said Brian Ahearn, Arcata Chief of Police. In the statement posted online, it said “Our investigative team remains at the ready to respond to anyone, at any time, to document their statement as we continue the fact-finding process.”

Charmaine Lawson mentioned during the vigil that on April 18, that she will meet with Rob Bonta, Attorney General of California, in hopes of getting the case prosecuted outside of Humboldt County.

Lawson shared that meeting with Bonta is key to getting justice because Humboldt County district attorney Maggie Flemming didn’t handle the case as she should have.

According to Lawson, the meeting could be the beginning of the end of the ongoing battle for justice.

“There’s an open wound in the community around this issue,” said Michihiro Clark Sugata, criminology professor at Cal Poly Humboldt and David Josiah Lawson’s former professor. “I think that there have been a lot of missteps in how

Administration and faculty reactions to professor’s past Title IX case

Former Cal Poly Humboldt dean of Professional Studies, John Lee was let go from his position in 2016 after two colleagues spoke out against his sexual misconduct and filed a Title IX report. Lee returned to work as a tenured professor after three months of leave in the College of Education using “retreat rights” in his contract.

Title IX is meant to protect people from sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and assault. According to an email sent from Cal Poly Humboldt, “retreat rights” are stated in faculty members' contracts allowing them to “retreat,” or step down to a lower position on faculty allowing them to keep a job if they are let go or choose to step down.

Since the release of the USA TODAY article on April 18, Cal Poly Humboldt University administration has not named Lee or the specific Title IX investigation findings that got him fired from his position in 2016 in emails sent to students, faculty and staff.

On April 15, three days before the USA TODAY story was released, university administration sent an email to all students, faculty and staff with infor-

mation about what to do about media inquiries from reporters, what's been done in response to Title IX complaints and resources available to all campus community members.

Cal Poly Humboldt’s weekly student-run publication, The Lumberjack released an article about a dean who is, as of writing this article, in temporary suspension and demoted to professor after speaking to a USA TODAY reporter.

“We kind of went into action once we heard about the article, which was to try to do as much sort of support for folks that was productive, and so we offered resources and materials to the College of Professional Studies and the School of Education,” said Maxwell D. Shnurer, chair of the Sexual Assualt Prevention Committee. “For moments like this in the future, and I think the fact that you know within a couple of days, the administration was like, yeah, let's have that meeting to try to figure out what could be done there.”

Professor Rouhollah Aghasaleh, assistant professor at the School of Education and a member of SAPC at Cal Poly Humboldt, worked very closely with Lee and even considered him his mentor.

“I considered him as a person who supported me and we discussed our work,” Aghasaleh said. “We discussed our teaching. We discussed our campus, the history of campus among our colleagues, he was one of the few ones who has been around for a longer time.”

When Aghasaleh heard about the news he said, “I felt like my stomach was in my mouth. I wanted to throw up.”

Aghasaleh feels that the administration could have shared the information with SAPC about Lee’s Title IX case before the release of the article.

“We just let the trauma happen, and even after that happened there has been no communications, no well check no. No directions, no responses, no comments,” Aghasaleh said.

El Leñador reached out to President Tom Jackson and Shawna Young for a statement on April 27, but as of May 3, no comment or statement has been received.

Cal Poly Humboldt Title IX case makes students uncomfortable

by Victoia Olsen After a USA TODAY story came out about John Lee, a Cal Poly Humboldt professor and former dean of Professional Studies, who was involved in a Title IX case. Students have been feeling confused, shocked and worried about what it means for their degree if they feel uncomfortable attending his class.

At the University Senate meeting on April 26, senate members read letters submitted by students and faculty where feelings and concerns were expressed about John Lee. “These issues include favoring misogynistic values, mistreatment of women, protection of users and lack of burglary action taken against sexual directors.

Lee is currently teaching six classes both in person and online this spring 2022 semester. These classes are: two LSEE 308 classes, two LSEE 319 classes, a LSEE 453 Senior Seminar 1 and an Activity course.

Next semester, fall 2022, Lee is scheduled to teach three classes, however it has not been confirmed by the department of education if Lee will still be teaching these courses. The courses are: LSEE 317, LSEE 318 and LSEE 723.

Today story. Sailor had enrolled in one of Lee’s classes for fall 2022 before the news broke. She has since unenrolled from that course.

Sailor was never uncomfortable around Lee and thought he was a helpful professor, but she believes that Lee shouldn’t have been offered a faculty position back to Cal Poly Humboldt. Sailor also believes the university should have been transparent and made students aware of the situation when it took place in 2016.

“There are a lot of students that are attending now that were not here at school in 2016 and weren't aware that this has ever happened,” Sailor said. “I was unaware of it because I didn't start coming to school here until 2017, and so I wish that I would have known, that maybe would

have informed my class making judgment or picking process.”

When asked how they felt about being in Lee’s class since the USA Today story came out, Kendra Turner and Jenni Bunneil, two students in Lee’s LSEE 308 class, agreed that it is a complicated situation.

“It was very unexpected and because it was the complete opposite of what we have seen in the classroom, I think that’s what has made it a lot more confusing,” Bunneil said.

There are a lot of mixed feelings amongst students about the situation and this professor. As many students have already enrolled in his fall classes, the biggest question is likely whether Lee will still be here teaching in the fall.

Humboldt county has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases. In March 2022, there was an average of four cases a week. As of May 3, there has been an average of 22 cases a week according to the Department of Health and Human Services dashboard.

The DHHS recommends vaccinated and unvaccinated people continue to take protective measures against COVID-19 by washing hands frequently, wearing a well-fitted mask, social distancing six feet from others when possible and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces.

Joint Information Center Closed March 2022 The Joint information Center number created in March 2020 to answer COVID-19 questions has closed. For the past two years, the JIC has helped county members sign up for vaccine appointments, find testing locations and provided Spanish-speakers with information about state and local health orders.

Community members can now call Public Health at (707)445-6201 if they have questions about COVID-19 recommendations, vaccine appointments and testing sites. Calls will be answered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Public Health is closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

According to the DHHS, callers to Public Health’s (707)445-6201 number looking for COVID-related information in Spanish will have their number taken and be called back by a Spanish speaker.

Free Testing for Community Public Health vaccination and testing clinics are still available free of charge. To find a list of specific vaccination and testing clinic dates, times, locations and available services visit the DHHS Humboldt Health Alerts or www.myturn.ca.gov.

Testing on Campus Students without insurance are no longer eligible to receive a COVID-19 PCR test on campus. Before April 2022, federal funding allowed students to get free test kits for COVID-19 without proof of insurance, which has since ended.

Those who don't have insurance can purchase their at-home rapid tests by iHealth from the Gutswurrak Student Activity Center and vending machines in the J and Nelson Hall. There is still a

ADPIC cultural center will open in fall

The Asian, Desi, Pacific Islander Collective program has officially been approved to become a cultural center for academic excellence at Cal Poly Humboldt. Their dedicated space will be located in Nelson Hall East 215 and 216. The new ADPIC cultural center will open its doors this upcoming fall 2022.

This space hopes to create a culturally safe space for Asian, Desi, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and North African students. According to ADPIC Advisor Ava Mark, they’ll have couches, a mini fridge, a TV, and a rice cooker for students to make food in one room. The other room will be similar to a study hall to help support students academically.

“It’ll be really nice to know that students have a place that they can find community too,” Mark said. “Just knowing that there is a central location of people that have shared experiences like them and that are interested in similar things that they can go to.”

finally gained traction towards being approved as a cultural center. However, things were postponed at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My favorite part would be actually seeing change,” Cha said. “because I feel like we are making progress and we are making change, so seeing everything unfold is pretty cool, also seeing everyone’s reactions and expressions to becoming a center.”

The university has been supportive of this proposal after years of students advocating for it. Associated Students have been funding ADPIC’s needs in regards to new furniture and computers. The Umoja Center for Pan African Student Excellence and El Centro Academico Cultural have helped advocate the need for an ADPIC cultural center as well.

“The other centers were advocating for us and it got some attention from the A.S. people,” Cha said. “So A.S. was starting to look at us as more of a cultural center because of the way we more so directed to the Asian population in Humboldt. I’m

cially opens to make it more inclusive for students in the center who may not identify as Asian. Andrew Cha, ADPIC student coordinator, explained that a new name seems fitting to keep up with all the changes the university has undergone since becoming a California polytechnic university.

Having this cultural safe space for Asian students is crucial for a sense of belonging in a predominantly White county. Alyssa Huynh, Cal Poly Humboldt student and ADPIC staff member, explained the need for the new ADPIC cultural center.

“As someone who is Asian American, it was really hard for me to find a space for me,” Hyunh said. “I didn’t even know we had a community here and so knowing that we do and having it be more presently known is really important.”

How the center came to be The creation of an ADPIC cultural center has been in the works for years. The last proposal submitted by the previous ADPIC Advisor Roger Wang in 2019

The coordinator of the Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion Center, Frank Herrera, said the leaders of the ADPIC program have worked closely with designers from facilities management.

They carefully selected all their furniture and have been working on a layout design that is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “It was nice to see young people in these positions having words that meant something and had an impact on the design and layout of this place. It was really cool, I just sat there and watched,” Herrera said.

After the doors officially open this fall, the next step as a newly established cultural center will be to hire a full time program coordinator.

“I think the next steps would be to find a full time coordinator. Someone similar to Doug Smith to the Umoja Center, Fernando Paz for El Centro,” Mark said.

Professor creates BIPOC community farm and retreat center

Tucked away near Redwood Creek up highway 299 rests Earthseed Laboratories, a developing community garden and retreat center grounded in the ideologies of abolitionist ecology and BIPOC land injustice. Cal Poly Humboldt Professor Dr. Renee Byrd is a proud biracial Black woman, mother, activist, scholar, abolitionist and founder of Earthseed.

When you first reach Earthseed you are greeted by 40 acres of beautiful green woodland and by Greta, a livestock guardian dog who gives the best hugs. The new farm has three adult angora goats and two that are a few weeks old. Earthseed is still years in the making, but in time Byrd hopes to include a wider variety of animals on the farm including ducks, chickens and geese.

“It’s definitely kind of an overgrown forest and the goats are eating up that poison oak and dandelions and pooping which is rebuilding the soil in this part that the previous owner graded and there's been a lot of erosion so we’re trying to rebuild the top soil,” said Byrd. “We looked at other lands that would be someone's image of pristine wilderness, but the first thing that I thought of when I saw this land was that it is in need of some healing so the idea is that the process is happening together.”

Solidarity Garden is growing vegetables like pumpkin and corn. Byrd’s future goal is to grow an assortment of vegetables, medicinal herbs, native plants, mushrooms and so much more. She has a handful of volunteers and collaborators and in time hopes to gain more helping hands.

“On the weekends I’ve been making the time to start bringing the Indigenous and Black Solidarity Garden to life. We've been building beds, bringing lumber, soil, seeds and planning water systems to be able to support it in the long term, “ said Karely Vienneau, a member of the Earthseed community and recent Cal Poly Humboldt graduate. “It’s just getting started. Right now we’ve built three beds and that’ll be expanding in future years.”

Byrd was born in Southern California but grew up on the go as her family moved around often, briefly living in Humboldt for four years. She earned her degree in ethnic studies from Mills College in Oakland, California, and went on to get her Ph.D in feminist studies from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Byrd returned to Humboldt in fall 2013 as a Cal Poly Humboldt professor to work in the english department. Her earlier work was largely centered on prison activism and grounding prisoner reentry.

Byrd currently has a variety of subjects she teaches regarding critical theoretical

traditions, black ecologies and radical futures.

Byrd’s two favorite books, “Parable of the Sower” and “Parable of the Talents”

by Octavia Butler, are the inspiration for the name Earthseed Laboratories as they touch on climate change and social inequalities. The idea for Earthseed sprouted nearly a decade ago when Byrd and her best friend brought up the conversation about creating a healing farm. The land was purchased a year ago and is in the early stages of infrastructure.

“It centers Black and indigenous solidarity and is really rooted in these intersections of what Renee talks about which is the four different types of justice; racial, climate, land and healing,” said Amy Ithurburn, a member of the Earthseed community and senior at Cal Poly Humboldt.

A part of Byrd’s vision for Earthseed is to create a space where formerly incarcerated people can have the opportunity to be employed and heal. It is technically considered a corporation however she plans to run it as a community organization.

“I don't see Earthseed as the end all be all of everything but it’s one site amongst many that we need to be proliferating — where there's space for us to be ourselves and live our souls’ purpose,” said Byrd. “I feel like there are also a lot of times where

particularly BIPOC folks don’t feel comfortable out in nature. I already have some friends and folks who are like it’s really great to be out there and it doesn't feel like anyone’s going to kick me off this land.”

People will have the opportunity in time to buy shares of the produce and flowers grown on the farm. Byrd also hopes to develop many trails throughout the land. One trail she has in mind will be called the Harriet Tubman trail which will lead to an altar honoring Tubman.

Byrd’s primary focus this year is to connect with the land and learn from Indigenous people.

“Thinking about what our responsibilities are to native communities here and the land being accessible to indigenous folks is really important. While I have a special interest in Black farming and Black relationships to land, I don't necessarily see that as a separate struggle from struggles around sovereignty and settler colonialism.”

There are plans to build a barn, cabins, yurts, as well as offer retreats and workshops and host community work days that end with group dinners. Earthseed will be offering space for camping and will be reopening their apothecary this summer.

Abbott Elementary talks about broken educational systems with humorous moments

Abbott Elementary is a sitcom on ABC that focuses on the in-depth perspective of public school teachers that are dedicated to helping their students succeed in elementary school.

The show mixes the various emotions of people in an underserved public school with joyful wisdom. It tackles a variety of topics and handles it with a great comedic value.

The show keeps it lighthearted with the use of mockumentary style which has been well known by NBC’s hit TV shows such as “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation” and ABC’s “Modern Family.”

One of the main characters to highlight in the series is Janine Teagues played

by Quinta Brunson. Her character is a very optimistic individual that attempts to give it her all to help students at Abbott elementary. Janine embodies the positivity that some public school teachers attempt to have when teaching at underfunded schools.

There was a moment in this series that went over issues such as understaffing in the education system and the questionable ability of some people to teach children in the classroom. It had a janitor played

by William Stanford Davis teaching about conspiracy theories such as the illuminati.

This is a perfect demonstration of how

the show has great laughable moments that connect to the reality of the broken education system.

Another character that had great moments on the show was Melissa Schemmenti, played by Lisa Ann Walter. Walter’s character is a second grade teacher that has a questionable background with criminal connections. These moments bring laughter in the series as the show keeps viewers wondering about what her backstory is throughout the show.

Barbara Howard, played by Sheryl Lee Ralph is an impactful character throughout the series as she becomes a mentor that people look up to because of her work ethic. The show also demonstrates her witty side during certain moments of the show, giving her character some complexity.

It is safe to say that Abbott Elementary is a heartfelt series that shows the value of public school teachers and their everyday struggles in the education system. The series also connects viewers with humorous moments that show the positivity and optimism of these teachers wanting their students to succeed in life. People can watch the whole series on HULU or on the ABC network on Tuesdays at 9 p.m.

Pupusas are a food held close to the heart of a Salvadoran person. Jorgelina Granados and her son Gino Granados are serving the culture of El Salvador in Humboldt County. They opened San Miguel Pupuseria on April 10 at the Arcata Foodworks Culinary Center.

“My mom learned from her mom and my grandma learned from my great-grandmother, this has been in our family tree for many generations,” Gino said. “I imagine that for other Salvadoran people it is the same. Pupusas have been in our culture for a long time. If you read a little about the history of the pupusas, the indigenous people of El Salvador – that's where the pupusas started.”

Jorgelina is from San Miguel, El Salvador and she arrived in the United States around 1978. In the United States, Jorgelina raised her two children alone.

When it was time for her children to leave home and go to college she also decided to leave Los Angeles. During those years she went to work for butcher companies in different states. Apart from those jobs she also cooked and sold pupusas on the side.

“I never thought that ‘oh I'm going to

“People ask me ‘oh what is your goal with this business?’ To go to different places where there is not much food diversity and open a place just like this in Redding, or Ukiah,” Gino said. “Places where we need to teach people of El Salvador culture.”

On behalf of the business goals, Gino wants to have a successful business and with time to expand San Miguel Pupuseria to have something more permanent-like a restaurant.

“In the future when we are in a larger place we want to have fried yucca,” Gino said. “I've been playing with trying to make yucca fries like carne asada fries but yucca fries and more [meals] like tamales de elote, empanadas, pastelitos.”

“My mom wherever she went she made pupusas. In Oregon she made pupusas and sold them. In Nebraska, Kansas, Phoenix, she’s always made them. I look at it as a passion for her.”

Gino graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt in 2006 with a degree in marketing and business management and a minor in psychology. Gino mentioned that he had conversations about opening a business with his mother before and among others.

Owner of Los Giles Osvaldo Hernandez Sanchez supported and motivated Gino to open San Miguel Pupuseria.

“I am very happy and not just because Gino is a dear friend of mine but I am very pleased that as Latinx we are progressing in this country, every new Latino business gives me a lot of happiness,” said Hernandez Sanchez. “My advice to Gino was not to give up, although at first it seems that it is something very difficult. I am convinced that we needed a pupusa business in our community. I've tried all the pupusas on the menu and my favorite pupusas are Cheese with loroco

and chicharron with cheese, they are all delicious.”

At San Miguel Pupuseria you can order a bean, cheese, chicharron, jalapeno, or loroco pupusa. There are also vegan options like vegan cheese and beans. As people order their pupusas they can be made with the available ingredients.

The main ingredient of a pupusa is loroco. Loroco is an edible flower and is also known as Fernandina pandurata. This ingredient is highly used in El Salvador, Guatemala and other Central American countries. Loroco is used in many forms but is most known to be one of the most important ingredients for an authentic pupusa.

"There was none of that here," Gino said. "There's more Latin food but it's not diverse, there's a lot of Mexican food, but more than that, I'm not sure what different food cultures there are."

In Humboldt County, there are many types of food but what was missing was a Salvadoran pupuseria. The first day San Miguel Pupuseria opened, Jorgelina made about 400 pupusas. She said she was happy to receive so many good responses

Las pupusas son algo tan cercano al corazón de una persona Salvadoreña. Jorgelina Granados y su hijo Gino Granados están sirviendo la cultura de El Salvador en el condado de Humboldt, ellos abrieron San Miguel Pupuseria el 10 de abril en el Arcata Foodworks Culinary Center.

“Mi mamá aprendió de su mamá, y mi abuelita aprendió de mi bisabuela, esto ha estado en nuestro árbol genealógico por muchas generaciones,” dijo Gino. “Yo me imagino que para otra gente Salvadoreña es lo mismo. Las pupusas han estado en nuestra cultura por mucho tiempo. Si te pones leer un poco de la historia de las pupusas, los indígenas de El Salvador –ahí fue donde las pupusas se comenzaron.”

Jorgelina es de San Miguel, El Salvador, y llegó a los Estados Unidos en el año 1978. En los Estados Unidos, Jorgelina creó a sus dos hijos sola. Cuando era tiempo para sus hijos ir al colegio ella también decidió irse de Los Ángeles. Durante esos años ella se fue a trabajar para compañías de carnicerías y conoció diferentes estados. Aparte de esos trabajos también cocinaba y vendía pupusas.

con loroco y las de chicharrón con queso.

Aunque todas están deliciosas.”

En San Miguel Pupuseria pueden pedir una pupusa de frijol, queso, chicharrón, jalapeño, o loroco también tienen opciones veganas. Como la gente las pide se pueden hacer con los ingredientes disponibles.

El ingrediente principal de una pupusa es el loroco. El loroco es una flor y también se conoce como fernaldia pandurata. Es una vid con flores comestibles.

También es muy extendida en El Salvador, Guatemala y otros países de América Central, se usa en muchas formas pero es importante para una pupusa tradicional.

“Aquí no había nada de eso,” dijo Gino. “Hay más comida Latina pero no está diverso, hay mucha comida Mexicana, pero más de eso, no estoy seguro de las diferentes culturas de comida que hay.”

En el condado de Humboldt hay muchos tipos de comida pero lo que faltaba era una pupusería para la comunidad Salvadoreña. El primer día que abrieron Jorgelina hizo alrededor de 400 pupusas, ella dijo que se siente feliz por recibir tantas buenas respuestas de su comida.

“Estar en una comunidad donde no

han sido parte de nuestra vida y pues mi mama donde sea que iba hacia pupusas,” dijo Gino. “En Oregón hacía pupusas y las vendía, en Nebraska, Kansas, Phoenix y siempre ha sido, pues, yo lo miro como una pasión para ella.”

Gino se graduó de Cal Poly Humboldt en 2006 con un título en marketing y gestión de empresas y una especialización en psicología. Gino mencionó que tenía conversaciones acerca de abrir un negocio con su madre antes y entre otras personas.

El dueño de Los Giles, Osvaldo Hernandez Sanchez apoyó y motivó a Gino para abrir San Miguel Pupuseria.

“Estoy muy feliz y no solo porque Gino es un amigo muy estimado mio pero me da mucho gusto que como latinx estemos progresando en este país cada negocio nuevo de un latino me da mucha felicidad,” dijo Hernandez Sanchez. “Mi consejo para Gino fue que no se rindiera que aunque al principio parece que es algo muy difícil y hay muchos requisitos que siquiera adelante hasta hacerlo realidad.

hay mucha diversidad alimentaria y pues me preguntan a mí ‘¿Cuál es tu meta con este negocio?’ Ir a diferente lugares donde no hay mucho diversidad alimentaria y abrir un lugar así como en Redding, o Ukiah,” dijo Gino. “Lugares hacia donde necesitamos enseñar a todos la cultura de El Salvador.”

De parte de las metas para el negocio, Gino quiere tener un negocio exitoso y con tiempo expandir la pupusería para tener algo más permanente como un restaurante.

“En el futuro ya que estemos en un lugar más grande queriemos tener yucca frita. He estado jugando con tratar de hacer papas fritas de yuca como papas fritas de carne asada pero papas fritas de yuca,” dijo Gino. “Y más como tamales de elote, empanadas, pastelitos como compañero de las pupusas de pollo, de friol.”

Experience of horizontal oppresion

As a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe, I grew up in the tutelage of my family and tribal community on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation.

We were put at an economic disadvantage in terms of opportunities for advancement. Some of this can be attributed to the long-lasting effects of settler-colonialism and various forms of genocide. One of the lasting effects plaguing our Indigenous communities across Indian Country today is lateral oppression.

Lateral oppression is when a particular group has been oppressed for so long that individuals subconsciously start to lash out at one another.

This comes in the form of shaming, blaming, bullying, gossiping, name-calling, etc.

In the second grade, I had my first experience with lateral oppression when I was beaten up by another Native peer who called me “f—ing white trash.” I remember crying and being too young to understand the message.

I will never forget the strong sensation of hate fuming from my peer’s body that day.

In middle school, there were similar interactions with my peers, but in much more subtle behaviors. They used to tell me, “You don’t look native.” I remember feeling like a racial imposter.

It was like my outward appearance did not match what I knew myself to be on the inside. I used to hate what I looked like. I used to think to myself, “What would it be like if I looked more native? Would I feel much more like I actually belonged?”

As native kids, I believe we grow up with a lot of stereotypes from mainstream media. I remember always seeing one of my classmates wearing a Cleveland Indians hat.

The guy on the logo had a mischievous grin like he was up to no good. Some of the common movie tropes for Indians usually painted us as ruthless savages, lazy drunks, and stoic beings that were Graphic by Eddie Carpenter incapable of showing any emotion at all.

When we police each other’s identities, it shows how some of us have internalized our own oppression.

These classifications are colonial tools from imposed social structures used to divide and conquer people from the inside out. What I went through is a fraction of what Indigenous people of color go through on a daily basis.

Being of fair skin, I learned that I carry a lot of white privilege with my indigeneity. In order for us to recover from the effects of lateral oppression, we must be able to name them for what they are. In offering my personal narrative, I invite you into my way of seeing and knowing about these social issues.
