New Mascot for Cal Poly Humboldt? Associated Students Board

unanimously removes President Finley by Gerardo Hernandez
by Gerardo Hernandez
As Cal Poly Humboldt becomes the third polytechnic university in California, new resources and academic programs are on the horizon. However, the question remains about any potential changes for a new mascot. If that were to happen, it would permanently retire the nearly 63 year-old mascot “Lucky the Lumberjack.” Throughout the years, students have requested to get rid of the Lumberjack mascot. “I would like to see a change… this would mean getting rid of a mascot that represents settler-colonial narratives,” said Eddie Carpenter, a senior communication studies major at Cal Poly Humboldt, who believes a new mascot is needed for Cal Poly Humboldt. “I think the ethical decision would be to find a mascot that represents diversity and intercultural student, staff, and faculty values,” Carpenter said. There are also unfavorable opinions on changing the Lumberjack mascot. Caleb Davis, an undeclared freshmen student, talked to El Leñador about his thoughts on the potential change. “We shouldn’t change the mascot, it’s reflective of the longstanding legacy for alumni and students that attended this university,” Davis said. Davis believes that it’ll be unlikely for Cal Poly Humboldt to change the Lumberjack mascot. “Throughout the years of this university changing its name, the Lumberjack mascot has remained, and it still represents our school,” Davis said.

Cal Poly Humboldt Plans According to Kristen Gould,Cal Poly Humboldt director of marketing, there are no current plans to change the mascot. Cal Poly Humboldt is working with the marketing firm, Simpson Scarborough, to evaluate the university’s brand. Gould explains, Simpson Scarborough’s conducted branding initiative interviews and found that members of the campus community were interested in alternatives to the mascot. According to Gould, any possible changes must be made based on feedback. Simpson Scarborough remains committed to share input involving the Lumberjack mascot with Cal Poly Humboldt’s Polytechnic Implementation Communications Working Group and university leaders. “Any possible changes to our mascot must involve engagement and feedback from alumni, as well as students, faculty, staff, and supporters,” Gould said.
tutional changes at Cal Poly Humboldt. On Feb. 20, the Associated Students’ Board conducted an impeachment trial for former A.S. President Jeremiah Finley, After six hours of a thorough impeachment trial, all A.S. members unanimously impeached former President Finley. The Articles of impeachment against Finley included, overstepping the bounds of their office without the advice or consent of the Board of Directors, unilateral decision-making, violation of California Law AB 361, and violation of the Gloria Romero Open Meeting Act of 2000. Former President Finley was given the opportunity to speak after the impeachment trial was over. “I really appreciate every, every single one of you, and I truly do apologize for the hurt and on the up cost. That’s never my intention,” said Finley. “It takes a lot for us to go through that, sort of, time intensive and mental health intensive,'' said Giovanni Guerrero, a member of A.S. During his time with the Associated Students, Guerrero explains that to his knowledge, there hasn’t been an impeachment trial with the A.S. Board at Cal Poly Humboldt. Guerrero went on to explain that there are multiple layers as to why the impeachment trial happened and the biggest layer for him was former President Finley's treatment towards other A.S. members. According to Guerrero, these members were

belittled, micro aggressed, and did not feel safe communicating with the former A.S. president. “It’s just unacceptable to treat people in a manner when they’re here in a space to do things they want to do to improve student lives … it’s just not okay,” said Guerrero. “I really hope whoever is our next president, addresses the structural problems within Association Students.”
Who will be the A.S. president now?
On Feb. 22, the A.S. held a special meeting to discuss who will fill the vacant president position. At the end of the meeting, A.S. members chose Lizbeth Cano Sanchez, a senior in business marketing, to become the next A.S. President for Cal Poly Humboldt.

Humboldt lifts mask mandate by Victoria Olsen
As of March 1, Governor Gavin Newsom, has lifted California’s indoor mask mandate for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Humboldt County has also lifted their indoor mask mandate but is still highly encouraging that all people continue to wear masks indoors in crowded, high-risk areas. "We are moving past the crisis phase into a phase where we will work to live with this virus," Newsom said. California became the first state to formally shift to an "endemic" approach to the coronavirus, according to a plan announced by Newsom on Feb. 17. Humboldt County Public Health Director Sofia Pereira said that although the masks help limit the spread of COVID-19, the county is still going to follow state recommendations. According to the California Department of Public Health, starting March 11, K-12 schools will no longer be requiring masks indoors. Students and teachers are still strongly encouraged to wear masks. Under the California state health order, masking will still be required in the following high-risk settings: • Areas of public transit • Health care • Long-term care facilities • Correctional facilities
Businesses can still ask customers to wear masks.
Cal Poly Humboldt As of March 1, no changes have been made to the University mask requirements. These are the current requirements for Cal Poly Humboldt: • Face masks are mandatory, regardless of vaccination status, inside all campus facilities except for certain private spaces and designated eating areas* • Masks must be worn in cars or buses for University activities • N95 masks are recommended indoors, but NOT required • Cloth face masks must have at least two layers of cotton • Fitted masks are required, neck gaiters and bandanas are not effective • After use, face coverings must be laundered or disposed

Cultural Graduation Ceremonies at Cal Poly Humboldt by Andrea Santamaria
The Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence at Cal Poly Humboldt are hosting cultural graduation ceremonies to celebrate diverse communities for the May 2022 graduation. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, these ceremonies have been held virtually. The graduating class of 2022 will be the first to have cultural graduation ceremonies in person since the pandemic started. For students, staff and family members, hosting a celebration separate from the general commencement on May 14 is a time to honor student achievements while also staying rooted in culture. “We want a space that recognizes and celebrates our accomplishments, successes, and achievements,” said Jessica Ordaz, the event planning specialist from El Centro Academico Cultural. "We will be having performances presented by Danza Azteca, folklorico, and mariachi…this is how most of our families celebrate when there is an event so us having these types of performances makes it really special.” Adrienne Colegrove-Raymond, the director of the Indian Tribal and Educational Personnel Program, shared that the Native Graduation Sash Ceremony is a testament to Native resilience and thriving communi-
ties. To host these ceremonies, the centers receive funding from the university. The centers also organize fundraisers and take donations to cover the costs of sashes, performances and other graduation expenses. Cultural graduation details are still being planned. What is Syphilis? Rising Cases in Humboldt County by Steffi Puerto
The on-going COVID-19 pandemic has caused a drop of people getting regularly tested for STI/STDs. Humboldt County has reported dealing with high cases of the sexually transmitted diesease known as Syphilis within the past ten years. As of 2021, there are currently 75 provisional cases of Syphilis. Public health officials are urging folks to get tested because they are seeing diseases resurfacing, like congenital syphilis, which has been gone for over ten years. Congenital syphilis is when a mother transmits the infectious disease to their fetus before birth. El Leñador talked to Humboldt Health and Services Department public health nurse, Daniel Tran, and Health Education Lead, Mira B. Friedman, about the sexually transmitted infection known as syphilis.
What is Syphilis? According to the Center for Diseases Control syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can cause serious health problems if not treated right away. Unlike other STIs, syphilis is capable of causing severe damage to your body and brain. Exposure and Symptoms Exposure to syphilis occurs by skin to skin contact. Meaning you can be exposed through anal, oral, and vaginal sex with your sexual partner. The most common symptoms are sores that can be found on your genitals, lips, and inside your mouth. Syphilis is divided into different stages. The stages come with their own different signs and symptoms associated with the stage.
Primary stage During the primary stage of syphilis, you could notice a single sore or multiple sores. The sores are located where the syphilis entered your body. The sores are sometimes firm, round, and painless, sometimes going unnoticed by the individual. These sores usually will last three to six weeks and will heal regardless of the treatment status of syphilis. You must still recieve treatment regardless if the sores are gone. This will stop your infection from continuing on to the secondary stage.
Secondary stage During the secondary stage, you might develop skin rashes and/or mucous membrane lesions. Mucous membrane lesions are sores in your mouth, vagina or anus. This stage usually starts with one to many rashes on your body. The rash can show up when your primary sore is healing or
several weeks after the sore is healed. The rash can look rough, red, or reddish brown spots on the palms of your hands and or the bottom of your feet. The rash usually won’t itch and it is sometimes so faint that it can go unnoticed.
Other symptoms include: • Fever • Swollen lymph • Sore throat • Patchy hair loss • Weight loss • Muscle aches and fatigue The symptoms will go away regardless of treatment status of syphilis. Without the correct treatment, your infection will move on to the latent and possibly tertiary stages of syphilis.
Latent stage The latent stage of syphilis is a period of time when there are no visible signs or symptoms of syphilis. If you do not receive treatment, you can continue to have syphilis in your body for years without showing any signs or symptoms.
Tertiary stage Most people who have untreated syphilis do not develop tertiary syphilis. However, when it occurs it can affect many different organ systems in your body. This includes your heart and blood vessels, and your brain and nervous system. Tertiary syphilis is very serious as it occurs 10-30 years after your infection first began. Neurosyphilis and Ocular Syphilis Without the correct treatment for syphilis it can spread to the brain and nervous system (neurosyphilis) or go to the eyes (ocular syphilis). This can occur during any of the stages described above. The symptoms of neurosyphilis include: • Severe headache • Difficulty coordinating muscle movements • Paralysis (not able to move certain parts of your body) • Numbness • Dementia (mental disorder) Symptoms of ocular syphilis include changes in your vision and even blindness.
Who should get tested? The CDC recommends that anyone who is having unprotected sex should get tested. As well as men who engage in sex with other men, and if you have had partner(s) who have tested postive for syphilis. Pregnant women are also advised to go get syphilis tested during their first prenatal

visit. Syphilis cases in pregnant women can lead to stillbirths, miscarriages, and birth defects.
Testing The most common test to see if a person has syphilis is a blood test. Some health care providers will diagnose syphilis by testing fluid from a syphilis sore. Only laboratory tests can confirm whether you have syphilis. Follow-up testing by your healthcare provider is recommended to make sure that your treatment was successful. It is important to know that having syphilis does not protect you from being re-infected. Even after you’ve been successfully treated, you can still be re-infected. It is also important to get tested because

syphilis in your partner(s) may not be visible or obvious. Syphilis sores can hide in the vagina, anus, under the foreskin of the penis or in the mouth. Unless you know that your sex partner(s) has been tested and treated, you may be at risk of getting syphilis from an infected sex partner.

Russia invades Ukraine
Rusia invade Ucrania
by Ricardo Lara Nava
por Ricardo Lara Nava traducido por Desiree Osornio
On Feb. 24, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine by firing missiles into the country in the early morning. Before the invasion, Russian President Vladamir Putin, in a pre-recorded televised broadcast, said that he had ordered a “special military operation” to take place in Eastern Ukraine so he can “demilitarize” and “de-nazifi” the nation. “I’m authorizing additional strong sanctions and new limitations on what can be exported to Russia. This is going to impose severe costs on the Russian economy, both immediately and over time,” said United States President Joe Biden on Feb. 24. Why is Russia invading Ukraine? Russian president Vladimir Putin, said in a statement on Feb. 21, that citizens of Ukraine already called themselves Russians even before it became part of the USSR in 1919. Along with this propaganda, he adds that Ukraine has always been Russian and the move to be independent is a product of the West. In 2014, Russia took control of the Crimea peninsula in Ukraine. The United Nations General Assembly members called this move “illegal and invalid.” One of Russia's requirements for peace with Ukraine is for the United Nations to recognize Crimea as a part of Russia. Noah Zerbe, Cal Poly Humboldt global politics and political science professor said there are many narratives as to why Putin invaded Ukraine. One of them being that Ukrainians see themselves as “brothers of Russia'' of which has been a product of Russian propaganda. What’s happening in Ukraine? Since the invasion, the people of Ukraine have been met with bombings, tanks and daily gun fights with the Russian military. Over half a million people, made up of women and children, have already left the country. Males aged 18-60 have been ordered by the Ukrainian president ,Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to stay and join the fight to defend their country. “The concern that we have would be that authoritarian leaders rarely don’t do well when they step down,” said Zerbe. “My concern is that the incentives for putin are to continue this conflict to the bitter end.” In the first week of March, talks with the Ukraine and Russian officials in Belarus did come to a resolution. After the meeting, Russia continued to fired missiles

that struck Kryiv’s main TV tower as well as a Holocaust memorial said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Twitter. How is this affecting the U.S.? “The United States will not engage with Russian forces in Ukraine.” said President Joe Biden in his State of the Union Address on March 1. The President also said that the American military is in North Atlantic Treaty Organization territories and will defend every inch of territory if Putin decides to move into NATO nations. Russia is the second largest fertilizer producer in the world and so as a result of the sanctions in Russia prices of fertilizer have gone up for U.S farmers. Patrick Donnelly, senior financial analyst at Third Bridge, said it is estimated that as a result, food prices will go up in the upcoming year. “With the sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union and a number of other nations, the Russian ruble has taken a big hit,” said Zerbe. “Although the sanctions not only have negatively impacted Russia but the world as well. The price of oil has increased $100 a barrel, making it the highest it’s ever gone up. As well as the price of iron and steel.”

Resources for survivors of stalking
Noticias
by Ricardo Lara Nava In Humboldt County, there are resources that offer survivors of sexual assault, harassment and domestic violence. Not many people know that some of these services also help people who have experienced stalking. In February 2022, a stalking survey conducted by the United States Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, revealed that women are twice as likely to be victims of stalking than males and only 29% of the survivors reported it to the police. “We talk a lot about consent which is great but when it comes to stalking that isn’t something that I recall hearing too much about,” said Liliana A. Cortes, violence prevention advocate at Cal Poly Humboldt's Women’s Resource Center.
What is stalking? Stalking can be defined as repeatedly following someone, sending unwanted messages or gifts and keeping track of their location to cause the victim fear for their safety. The definition of stalking varies from state to state across the U.S. “One of the difficulties of articulating and understanding what is harmful behavior,
it's one of those places where rape culture has mixed up a lot of the traditional communication stories about what it means to be romantic or persuasive in comparison to being creepy,” said Maxwell D Schnurer, chair of the sexual assault prevention committee at Cal Poly Humboldt. “Those lines are often thin and complicated for folks and it's one of those things that need a lot more education and work.” Cal Poly Humboldt’s Clery Act of 2021, states that zero students have experienced stalking in 2020. However, the recently released Cal Poly Humboldt 2020 Safer Campus Survey states that 162 students have experienced stalking. A lack of reporting may contribute to the drastic changes in reports. “I think we know why many folks don’t talk to authorities,” Schnurer said. “They might be afraid of retaliation, may not trust law enforcement, believe that the system isn’t going to do right by them or that they might not know about their resources.”

COVID-19 Vaccinations and Pregnancy: What you need to know from a OBGYN by Elizabeth Lachman
• Women are at high risk for serious complications if they contract COVID-19 while pregnant. • The COVID-19 vaccines are approved and strongly recommended for pregnant women • Women who are vaccinated during pregnancy can possibly transfer antibodies to the baby People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or thinking of having a baby have expressed concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine and what getting vaccinated means for the health of their pregnancies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the COVID-19 vaccine works in the same way other vaccines do by creating defensive white blood cells that protect the body and help fight the virus in case of reexposure. “Unvaccinated women that are pregnant can get seriously ill and end up in the intensive care unit with respiratory distress,” said Dr. Kim Ervin, an OB GYN physician for Open Door Clinic in Arcata. “Pregnant women infected with the coronavirus are 40% more likely to develop complications or die during pregnancy than those who are not infected.” It is advised for pregnant women to get the vaccine as it can help protect them and their unborn child against COVID-19. Sofia Pereia, public health director for Humboldt county shared how getting the vaccine would have helped her experience. “From personal experience I was half way through my pregnancy in the beginning of this pandemic and for me it would have given me a lot of peace of mind to be able to get vaccinated to know myself and my baby were going to be safe,” Pereia said. “Luckily we were fine but it was stressful.”
Why is it important for pregnant women to get the COVID-19 vaccination? Getting the COVID-19 vaccine while pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeed-
ing lowers the risk of becoming severely ill while pregnant. “We’ve seen this locally in cases where pregnant women have had much more severe outcomes than non pregnant women so it’s definitely a real concern and we encourage everyone to talk to their doctor and get vaccinated for COVID-19 during the pregnancy,” said Dr. Ian Hoffman, recently resigned Humboldt County Health Officer.
Should people who want to become pregnant, are pregnant or are breastfeeding get the vaccine for COVID-19? The COVID-19 vaccines are approved by the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration for people who are pregnant and breastfeeding. Both doses of the vaccine plus the booster are highly recommended because people who receive the vaccine are less likely to have serious symptoms if they get COVID-19. Currently, there is no evidence showing vaccines pose any serious risks during pregnancy. According to the CDC, the benefits of getting any COVID-19 vaccine outweighs any concern or possible risk.
Which vaccines are recommended for pregnant women? The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are recommended by the CDC and Dr. Ervin for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding and are looking to conceive. This is due to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine having done more research about pregnancies and vaccines.
Can a mother pass antibodies to the baby after vaccination? New research suggests that babies are able to be given some antibodies if the mother is vaccinated during the pregnan-

cy. The CDC confirmed antibodies have been found in the umbilical cord blood of vaccinated mothers which means COVID-19 vaccination may help protect the infant against contracting COVID-19. Dr. Ervin stated the virus itself was not transferred to the baby but the protective antibodies are. When a pregnant woman receives the COVID-19 vaccine the woman's body creates protective antibodies, some of which are passed onto the infant. Over time the antibodies in the infants system will decline, but in the first few months of their lives infants can potentially receive immunity from COVID-19.
Side effects from a COVID-19 vaccine while pregnant? Possible side effects from receiving any of the COVID-19 vaccines include fever, muscle pain, tiredness, chills and nausea. If you are prone to allergic reactions be sure to communicate this to the person administering the vaccine. Rare cases an allergic reaction to any of the COVID-19 vaccines may occur. Research from the CDC shows pregnant women have not experienced different side effects from those who are not pregnant. Be sure to reach out to your doctor for more information about the best option for your pregnancy.

- Dra. Kim Ervin

Get to know Ginette Walker new CAPS counselor
by Elizabeth Lachman
por Elizabeth Lachman traducido por Desiree Osornio
On Jan. 12 of this year Ginette Walker began her work as a Staff Psychotherapist, Generalist with the Counseling and Psychological Services at Cal Poly Humboldt. Walker’s history and background leading up to her new position at Cal Poly Humboldt Born in Puerto Rico, Walker and her family shared a home with her grandparents. When she was seven years old, her family moved to Washington, D.C. Walker was excited to hear the news but also devastated at the thought of leaving her grandparents. Walker later enrolled in the University of Maryland but found it to be a difficult transition, and although she lived on campus she felt disconnected. During her three semesters at UMD, she struggled to stay afloat in her classes and eventually made the decision to transfer to George Washington University. It was there where she met Victor Golla, a professor who has left an impression that impacts her work today as a therapist. Formally, Walker did an independent practice for seven years working with facilities like Providence St. Joseph Hospital, CaliforniaVictim Witness Protection program and North Coast Children Services. Now at Cal Poly Humboldt, Walker is working at the Counseling and Psychological Services. There are many stressors that students face in their daily lives and CAPS resources can help provide a safe place to unpack that weight. Below you can find a Q and A with Walker where she shares more about her plans as a counselor with a Latinx focused outreach: Q: What would you say most motivates you to do what you do? A: Gratitude for the opportunity to make my living doing something that suits my personality and has meaning to me. For the opportunity to be a contributor in the enhancement of people’s quality of life. Q: Are your services primarily for students of the Latinx community? A: I have been hired to provide individual, couples, and group psychotherapy to any and all CAPS-eligible students (students enrolled full-time). I am referred to as “Latinx-focused” because the outreach I do will be focused on, but not limited to, our Latinx students. Hermanx Unidas: guiding students success for over a decade
by Frank Rocha
Hermanx Unidas de Cal Poly Humboldt is a student run/led club that started over a decade ago. The club has a history at Cal State Universities which began almost three decades ago, originally called Hermanas Unidas starting at University of California, Berkeley. In 1994, HaU de UC Berkeley’s founding mothers: Zuleyka Jinks, Ricki Akiwenzie, Erica Solorzano, Amelia Schutz and Bernadette Vargas recognized the limited support and resources for Latinas/Chicanas on university campus and wanted to resolve this issue. There are now 18 HaU chapters at California Universities. “This club is important because it provides a community to help anyone trying to find a home away from home,” said club member Guadalupe “Lupita” Juarez. It’s a non profit organization to recruit underrepresented minority students: focusing on the Latina community, to help gain a higher education and increase graduation rates. In Fall 2019, the use of “Hermanx” replaced “Hermanas” to be more inclusive and accepting of people however they may identify. Anyone that’s a Cal Poly Humboldt student or alumni may join the club. “As steering here, our chapter here, we decided to make a stepping stone to have an open door policy and accept anyone however they identify themselves,” said club co-chair, Yulie Nazario in an interview on Nov. 19. “So, it’s not just Hispanic/Latinx, anyone regardless of the background can join us.” Club members had grown in recent years, but did drop since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Currently the club has 25 members, during an interview with Nazario in November, it was 15. Now, club members believe there needs to be more members to support the club. It's been difficult to get good turnouts for their meetings and events since the pandemic. However, with more in person events being held, more club members are optimistic they will gain more members. Hermanx Events The club has a weekly newsletter for those who signed up as part of the club and its former alumni, which informs members on upcoming events. Currently, community service events which usually include beach cleanups and park cleanups are on hold. Social events for the club include wine

and cheese night, rookie night to welcome new members, veterana night for upperclassmen and seniors, senior brunch, senior sunset, general body retreats and other traditional events Hermanx holds. There is no pledging or rush for the club. And there are a number of positions open for the club's steering committee including a treasurer, academic chair, secretary. “It felt like a good support system to have during college and it felt like it was something that I needed,” said club member Veronica Amezola. “It sounded kind of like a sorority, but they emphasized that it’s not that strict and it’s not just girls supporting girls.” Amezola mentioned that she knows of alumni who have identified as male and the club has supported them even when they came back to Humboldt. The club welcomes back all alumni with open arms. “Coming into my fourth year here, I honestly don’t think I would be the person I am right now without having been a part of Hermanx Unidas,” said Torres. “It provided me with many resources and helped me get out of my bubble.” For more information check out the club's Instagram @haudecalpolyhumboldt for more information about the club.

Sitting in the living room on the couch in front of the TV, Jessica Lewis has all her makeup scattered around on a small table, ready to begin a four to five, or more, hour long makeup look to upload on her Instagram. “I’m trying to branch out,” Lewis said. “I'm trying to do things that I actually enjoy, that I wanted to do as a child, so kinda like, I’m trying to make my inner child happy basically. I’m trying to make them proud so I’m continuing to do it for them.” Lewis describes her creative makeup looks as editorial, digital art-makeup. Lewis grows inspiration from different makeup artists, other art creators, and fantasy and role-playing games that she used to play as a child. One day Lewis hopes someone creates a video character based on one of her makeup looks. “I typically like to think of every single look I do as its own character,” Lewis said. “I like to think that if I was in charge of making my own video game these would be the characters that I would put in. That’s what I base my thing off of.” Growing up, Lewis was a timid kid, and her intention while in glam is to make her inner child proud. Lewis acknowledges that she isn’t a professional makeup artist but is going to continue creating her art and growing her platform slowly. “When I put on the wig, when it all comes together I definitely do feel really powerful,” Lewis said. “I feel pretty.”
The beginning of sharing looks on Instagram Lewis was scrolling on TikTok when she saw a video about a creative Halloween makeup look and it inspired her to create and post her first makeup look on Instagram in October 2020. “After I didn’t get a lot of backlash and a lot of support from my friends and stuff like that I was like ‘Oh this isn’t so scary, I can keep doing this,’” Lewis said. Over two years now of creating and uploading makeup looks, Lewis continues to branch out in art in her style. Lewis tries to create looks based on other people’s art that isn’t makeup-related, she makes it apparent that the person that she took inspiration from is always going to be mentioned in the caption. “I think it’s really interesting because I’m not a makeup artist,” Lewis said. “The

only type of makeup I used to do was the wing, a little bit of glittery eyeshadow on the bottom, mascara, and just blush and that was it.” Through this artistic, creative, makeup journey, Lewis feels that it has pushed her to try more things in her everyday life.
Creative process It takes Lewis about five hours or more to create a look. She begins by applying glue to her eyebrows. After that, she applies her foundation with a white color product to help blend with another color. Lewis continues through her work around her eyes and contours her face until finished. Once the makeup look is completed Lewis takes and edits pictures, prepares a caption and finally uploads on Instagram for followers to view. “For my Instagram I know I’m not an influential person as of yet,” Lewis said. “I mean I’m slowly growing my Instagram but when I was trying to grow my Instagram I realized I put a lot of pressure on myself.” At 570 followers on Instagram, Lewis

felt that if she didn't produce enough makeup content weekly she would lose followers. She also knew that as a college student in her final semester at Cal Poly Humboldt that her studies were just as important. Leaving her to take a break from makeup and focus on school. Lewis realized that if people unfollow her account they weren’t following for the right reasons. “After I graduate I’m hoping to put out more,” Lewis said. “I do have a lot of ideas and I wanted to create a series for the longest time but I’ve been having to put it off because of classes.”
have an avian field technician job, and have more music-related gigs. Creating more video content is something that Lewis wants to develop next. However, she knows it's going to take a couple of years to get that started due to learning how to accomplish the editing process. “I’m trying to not put a lot of pressure on myself,” Lewis said. “I know I still want to do makeup and I’m hoping that with more time, as I graduate, after that I’ll be able to do more makeup and actually try to grow a following.”

"Me siento bonita."

Throughout the Humboldt community, the clear demand for more salsa music was met in March 2020 by the 15-piece salsa orchestra, Tropiqueño. They are a mix of individuals with a passion for celebrating Caribbean culture through salsa music. Fellow band member, Eric Tolfa, had a love for salsa music even though he did not grow up listening to it. He was able to get momentum on forming the band when he connected with Nick Camacho, who grew up listening to salsa music as part of his Puerto Rican heritage. Every band member has different experience levels. “No one in the band has experience playing salsa before and actually doing this style of music, so it’s all new to all of us,” said Tolfa. Some of the classic salsa artists that they cover include Celia Cruz, Willie Colon and Roberto Roena. This was not much of a challenge for some of the singers, as they were deeply immersed into salsa music in their upbringing. “All of the lady singers are from Puerto Rico, so we’re playing this music for the first time but we all grew up with it, we just fell into it pretty easily,” said vocalist Rocio Cristal Talavera. Community Support Overall, people have responded positively to Tropiqueño’s performances, especially with community outreach. Some organizations that have contacted them to share their Caribbean sound have been The Red Roof Inn, Casa Foundation and the Community United of North Arcata. “Oscar from CUNA is always kind of like reaching out like ‘hey let’s get some music for the people that they identify with,” said Talavera. “We have a huge Latin crowd at shows, they kind of come out of the woodwork for that.” More than just delivering Caribbean culture to the people of Humboldt, Tropiqueño also allows for some of the band members to connect with their own roots and others to express their cultural appreciation. “We are Spanish speakers and we are really familiar with the songs so it was kinda natural,” said vocalist Lyza Padilla. Tropiqueno member, Ray Triana-Bass, shared how being a part of this salsa band has provided him the space to reconnect with his Cuban heritage. His father experienced lots of racism when he first migrated

to the United States from Cuba in the 1960s. This forced assimilation onto some members of his family. “It’s been really awesome because there’s something kind of lacking with my Cuban roots,” said Traina-Bass. “My mom and dad sent me a guayabera so I could wear it for shows.” Other band members have grown to be truly inspired by the musicians they are surrounded by. Rebekka Lopez acknowledges the support that her fellow band members show one another and the feelings after seeing the crowd’s response to their music. “For me the biggest payoff is just watching people dance,” said Lopez. “I just think the most important part of music is the interaction that the musicians get with the audience. It’s not music if there’s nobody there to enjoy it.” Check out Tropiqueño’s Instagram @tropiqueno__ or connect with them on their Facebook page @tropiquenoband for upcoming events.

Tasting Barbados with the Saboreando Barbados con restaurant Taste of Bim el restaurante Taste of Bim por Peyton Leone y traducido por Jennifer Diaz

Paintings of flowers hang on the yellow and blue walls, a rich smell comes from the kitchen and lingers over the dining room. Two women move about the kitchen, preparing handmade Caribbean meals for their customers. Gabrielle Long, owner of Taste of Bim calls it "a piece of home away from home.” Taste of Bim has been serving dishes from Long’s island country of Barbados since 2015. Long came to the United States from Barbados when she was 16, bringing her culture and recipes with her. Currently, Long and her team run the main Taste of Bim location in Eureka, a Taste of bim food truck for catering events and The Grind Cafe, a coffee shop in Eureka. Recently, a new Taste of Bim location opened at Cal Poly Humboldt’s College Creek Marketplace on Feb. 2. Long looks to keep her businesses moving forward one day at a time. Food from the land She shared that these foods come from a culture of making meals with what was in the neighborhood. Cooking with ingredients from the neighbor's tree or backyard. These flavors and traditions are a long way from home, but they find a way to connect to the community anyway. Long explained that some people were unfamiliar with the dishes at first, but the flavors would win people over once they tried it. During the COVID-19 pandemic Long and her mother, Verna Long, kept the
restaurant running with to go orders only. "It was a challenge at first, we had to get a lot of prep done ahead of time to make the process easier," Long said. "We had the love of the community behind us." Growing community with new locations At her newest Taste of Bim location at the College Creek Marketplace, students can purchase select items from the original Taste of Bim menu. Dillon Harp, an employee at the new Taste of Bim, said that working there made him feel connected to his culture. Harp has family in the Caribbean and said it felt natural to work there with food that he knew. Harp shared that he sees Long as a beautiful example of Black excellence and Black female leadership. Debbie Lennox, a waitress of six years at Taste of Bim's main location in Eureka, said while working as a waitress for 35 years, this is her favorite job she's ever had. She loves working with Taste of Bim and is happy to see Long open new restaurants around Humboldt. Some of the most popular dishes at the Taste of Bim location are jerk wings, island style fried chicken, and the different curries they offer. People can visit Taste of Bim's main location at 613 3rd Street in Eureka and the Grind Cafe at 734 5th St in Eureka.

BIPOC reconnecting to cultural birth traditions by Alexandra Gonzalez
Birthing life is a big deal. Traditionally, in cultures all around the world certain people have the gift and responsibility of supporting the birthing experience. “When someone can be nourished by their ancestral traditions it can create a solid foundation for their desired pregnancy, birth and postpartum experiences,” said Andrea Henry-Robledo, a BIPOC birth worker in Humboldt County. Midwives provide licensed medical care in a holistic way. Whereas birth workers like parteras and doulas, can provide things like emotional support, womb massages, teas, herbal baths and support at the hospital. “In Mexico, traditionally, parteras weren't just midwives, they were herbalists, they were sobadoras, they were bone setters, they were energy workers,” said Michela Hernandez, a BIPOC birthworker in Humboldt County. The advice of parteras can still be heard saying “don’t go out with your hair wet” and “give yourself enough time to heal after giving birth.”
Revitalizing and Reconnecting Despite historically being criminalized and colonized, cultural birth traditions are becoming more and more sought out. There are many people in Humboldt County today creating pathways to expand the support for BIPOC births. Chelsea Trillo, 30, of Mindanao and Visayas descent, is an aspiring herbalist and advocate for trans BIPOC birthers. Trillo got a master's degree in social work from Humboldt State University in 2018 and has been doing anti-violence work for over a decade. “The way we bring in the next generation was ruined by the medicalization of Western birth because indigenous cultural ways were criminalized,” said Trillo. “When we take that power back, it's an act of resistance.” In March 2021, they co-founded Seeds of Ancestral Renewal, a collective of BIPOC caregivers in Humboldt County. The goal is to eventually have a BIPOC birthing center where people can have a safe and holistic birthing experience. “For me, herbalism is a part of the revitalization of traditional birthways,” said Trillo. Michela Hernandez, 32, of Mexican Indigenous and Irish descent, describes herself as a full spectrum birth worker. She has supported pregnant/postpartum people for 13 years and started supporting labor

and delivery three years ago. “Im stepping into a state of reclamation of autonomy, not just trying to make someone feel good,” Hernandez said. “And so for me, it's about learning how to remember, and reclaim the traditions that were inherently ours when I show up with somebody.” Hernandez has studied Angelina Martinez Miranda, a third generation midwife in Mexico who has attended about 13,000 births. “Being that representation for a community and making them feel safe is what's different about being a BIPOC doula in America,” Hernandez said. Alongside other culturally-rooted medicines, she also uses rebozo. A rebozo is a handwoven cloth that is used as medicine in Indigenouscultures. “They’re handwoven, and they're really tenderly made. To me being BIPOC and working with a rebozo means I'm reclaiming my traditions,” said Hernandez. “When I hold those strands and they’re wrapped around my client, those are the arms of my abuelitas, that's not just a tool or a cloth.” According to Hernandez, using a rebozo is politically charged in the doula community because of cultural appropriation.

Andrea Henry-Robledo, 26, of Puerto Rican descent, is the other co-founder of Seeds of Ancestral Renewal. They have worked as a birth worker in Humboldt for the last two years. In that time she has noticed some appropriation of cultural traditions on behalf of White birth workers. She believes birth work isn’t just business, it's a labor of love and integrity. “It's unfortunate that some people still feel so entitled to keep practicing certain things,” said Henry-Robledo. “There’s all these traditions worldwide, and universally, so people just need to honor their respective lineages.”
Choosing a birth worker Learning the traditions and knowledge of birth work is a constant work in progress. Indigenous parteras, like one of Hernandez’s teachers, have inherited knowledge from ancient teachings and thousands of births. In the United States, only Midwives, in particular, have to be licensed. Doulas can sometimes get certified during three day retreats. According to Hernandez, this can lead to dangerous situations because some doulas can feel overconfident in the delivery room after these retreats. It is important to consider a birth worker's experience
before adding them to your team. People can get in touch with Michela Hernandez for full-spectrum reproductive support on Instagram @sacred.bridges. For support from BIPOC caregivers, Seeds of Ancestral Renewal can be found on Instagram @seedsofancestralrenewal.

Mask mandate lifting: end of an era, or beginning of a new one? by Victoria Olsen
Mask mandates continue to change causing mixed em | Photo courtesy Canva
Does anyone else feel like things have been in constant motion, and yet at a complete standstill for the last two years? This pandemic continues to feel like it will never end. People are continuing to get vaccinated and boostered against COVID-19, but the rules are constantly changing. As we inch our way to feeling protected against this virus, Donkey Kong throws another barrel. Just one more obstacle to overcome. A few months ago, officials said we need to double mask or wear N-95’s to provide the most protection. We have heard how transmissible and “cold-like” the new Omicron variant is. So why now are we hearing that masks are no longer needed? California Governor, Gavin Newsom, announced that the indoor mask mandate would be lifted as of Feb. 15. In a tweet, Newsom summarized that the surge of cases has peaked and is currently at 65% and that hospitalization rates are down. This prompted California state officials to drop the mask mandates for vaccinated individuals. Unvaccinated people still have to wear masks indoors. But how are places going to be keeping track of that? Are they going to start mandating that every place checks COVID-19 vaccination cards? Some think that the reason for the
statewide mandate being lifted so early and suddenly is due to Newsoms own hypocrisy. Newsom was seen at Super Bowl LVI Feb. 13 maskless among many other high profile celebrities. Or the fact that with the primary elections coming up in California, Newsom may be trying to appeal to a greater audience. Either way, I certainly feel that it’s premature to end the indoor mask mandate after just announcing the peak going down. As for California counties, local governments are handling individual cities differently. Some are continuing to mandate masks, and others felt like the mandate was never in place to begin with, so what really changed? Personally, working in dining on campus, and attending in person classes and events, I am glad that Cal Poly Humboldt has decided students continue to the indoor mask mandate. In an article by the National Public Radio just a month ago, Dr. Fauci discusses COVID-19’s possible status change from “pandemic” to “endemic” in the future. An “endemic” is the same virus status as the flu, doesn’t go away, you get a yearly shot, we move on. But is it too soon to tell if we are at that point yet? Is this the beginning of another surge, or are we really starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel?
