Poison Center Offers Tips for a Safer Halloween

OKLAHOMA CITY – With Halloween right around the corner, it is time to consider steps to increase chances of a safe holiday.

Each year, Poison Centers across the country manage numerous exposures involving Halloween-related substances and products.

The Oklahoma Center for Poison and Drug Information at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center staff reminds everyone to keep the following simple precautions in mind while preparing for and celebrating the holiday:

• Check all candy and

treats for choking hazards.

• Make sure medicine is not left out and within a child’s reach, as children may confuse them for candy.

• Be aware of small batteries in flashlights and decorations; if swallowed, they may be a choking hazard or cause other lifethreatening issues for small children.

• Dry ice should be used with appropriate protective clothing, as skin exposure can cause severe burns.

• Do not store dry ice in the freezer or an unventilated area.

• The chemical dibutyl phthalate, found inside glow sticks, can be harmful if it comes in direct contact with the eyes.

• Use caution when applying Halloween makeup, as most contain dyes, oils and fragrances that could irritate the skin. Test makeup on a small area of skin first.

• Do not use super glue as eyelash glue.

Study Sheds Light on Cardiac Problems Caused by Type of Cancer Treatment

OKLAHOMA CITY — Immune checkpoint inhibitors, which treat a number of cancers by protecting the immune system so it can attack tumor cells, sometimes cause serious cardiovascular problems. Just how much of a risk the drugs pose to the heart was not well understood until recently, when a hematologist-oncologist at the OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center published a study shedding light on the issue.

Abdul Rafeh Naqash, M.D., was a lead author for the study, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The research confirmed that cardiovascular problems

connected with the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors are quite rare — 0.6% (40 patients) in the study population of nearly 7,000 patients experienced a “major cardiac adverse event.”

Among those 40 patients, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) was the most common. Most patients who were diagnosed with myocarditis developed the condition within 35 days of receiving a combination of two different immune checkpoint inhibitors.

The study provided further insight into the patients who developed myocarditis. A total of 65% of those patients also experienced problems in organs other than the heart. Among the

patients who were diagnosed with myocarditis, 22.2% died, and all of those patients also had myositis, which causes inflammation in the muscles. That finding suggests patients with myositis are at especially high risk for complications while taking immune checkpoint inhibitors.

“One of the most important things we were trying to do with this study was to create an awareness among both clinicians and patients about how these conditions can present. It’s important that these patients receive multidisciplinary care from oncologists, cardiologists, internists and other specialists, and that patients are started early on steroids and receive

aggressive management. We also wanted to raise awareness among ER physicians, who may be the first to see a patient who develops cardiac problems while taking an immune checkpoint inhibitor,” said Naqash, who is also an assistant professor of

hematology/oncology in the OU College of Medicine at the OU Health Sciences Center.

The study was conducted using patient data from 107 different clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (NCI-CTEP). Naqash began the study while he was working as a fellow at the National Cancer Institute, and he continued it once he joined Stephenson Cancer Center. Naqash’s primary collaborator on the study was senior investigator Elad Sharon, M.D., MPH, of NCI-CTEP. Naqash also presented their findings earlier this year at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Las 5 enfermedades que más afectan a los Latinos en Estados Unidos

El estilo de vida, costumbres alimenticias e inseguridad al acceder al sistema de salud son algunas de las dificultades de los latinos en EEUU La comunidad latina tiende a emigrar a EEUU por una gran diversidad de razones, lo que no es un secreto es que los latinos llevan con sí, su cultura, costumbres, creencias, modos y visiones de vida. Esto, muchas veces condicionados por hábitos no tan saludables y productivos para sí mismos.

Es evidente que son muchos los factores que interactúan afectando el estado de salud de los latinos, es por ello que se considera una problemática compleja.

Es importante destacar que estas enfermedades se pueden prevenir, todo depende del compromiso de la persona consigo misma para transcender las condiciones de la

realidad. En la actualidad existe una gran diversidad de información, sobre las etnias latinas en EEUU y sus modos y condiciones de vida, en términos generales las premisas que se encuentran vigentes relacionadas con la salud tienen que ver con condiciones desfavorables de vida para los latinos en EEUU.

Entre la información más relevante se considera la dorada por el Centro

para el control de las enfermedades en EEUU y el Colegio Americano de cardiología:

1 1 de cada 6 personas en EEUU es de origen hispano, se estima para el 2050 sea el 25 % de la población.

2 Los latinos se encuentran menos informados respecto a las enfermedades del corazón. Principal causa de muerte en EEUU.

3 Por esta falta de información los latinos desconocen que la presión arterial

y el colesterol son factores para contraer enfermedades cardiacas.

4. 55% de los hispanos con obesidad consideran que no tienen un problema de salud.

5 El idioma también es un factor condicionante, el 80% de los hispanos prefieren comunicar los temas de salud en español. Cerca del 30% manifiestan tener dificultad para obtener información de salud en este idioma.

6 Según una encuesta

las principales razones de no tener seguro médico la población hispana son los precios elevados de los servicios de salud, el status migratorio y la falta de información sobre alternativas para el seguro médico.

7 Existe un número importante de personas que no acude al médico, por ende no tienen información oportuna sobre el bienestar de su cuerpo.

8 La propagandas de comida rápida influye significativamente en las decisiones de los latinos en cuanto a comida y servicios de salud.
