ICE SILO FA LL 2023

Point Cloud Research In Collaboration With: Teia Killian, Jenda Simonsen, & Callahan Weeks

This collaborative project began with the research and analysis of Cold-War era Atlas-F missile silos around the country. The silos were used to store and launch the missiles. They have since been decommisioned and most still sit abandoned. Lidar scans were created in order to accurately document and analyze the silos. A small portable machine is used to collect points which create a 3D model. The machine sends out lasers that reflect off surfaces to communicate where objects are relative to the scanner. Through a series of linked scans, the scanner places points in space to make a comprehensive point cloud model. The drawings are made from point cloud models drawn from missile silo sites.

Base images were derived from the point cloud models, allowing us to produce accurate drawings and conduct in depth analysis by comparison.

COMPARISON OF TWO ATLAS F MISSILE SITES

The site is proposed to become both an ice-drilling facility and cold war museum. When considering the design for this space, our team continuously revisited the idea of the passage of time, both in terms of the site’s historical significance and its contemporary relevance. originally, this site served as an Atlas-F missile silo, tasked with harboring and controlling a nuclear weapon that had profound historical implications at the time. After the decommissioning of this program, the site remained dormant for many years. The development of a new purpose for this space takes the principles of historic preservation and adaptive reuse to a new level.

Transforming this missile silo into an instrument for positive global impact propels us into the future and demonstrates our capacity to rectify past mistakes. The proposed ice drilling facility on this site promises invaluable research that can address one of our most pressing concerns: the ongoing environmental crisis. Nevertheless, this proposal doesn’t solely look ahead; it also pays homage to the past by featuring an exhibition that recounts the history of the site and displays the significance of the Cold War era. The connection between these two elements reinforces how the past informs the future and displays the role of the individual in this process.

This allows for public and private spaces, with the private spaces being used by the ice drilling public spaces would be used by the visitors to the museum and facility, who would be taken future, showing the ice drilling facilities and the impact that it will have on the environment.

The Cold War exhibition leads the user along a path that explains the history of the site, and gives them an opportunity to go down into the existing missile silo launch control center. The use of volume encourages circulation and allows for visuals of all the displays throughout the space. Materiality is darker and monochromatic in this space, as the history being shown was at a darker, more serious point in history, The ice drilling facility, shown on the following page, lets in more light and has lighter materials to represent the importance of the future emerging from the past. The user follows the bridge that gives them a glimpse down into the drilling area before leading into the ice drilling exhibition space.

SECTIONS

This project took a decommissioned beef processing plant and slaughterhouse and transformed the space into a modern day Roman bathhouse. Located in Rome, the site is located in an up and coming neighborhood, and would prosper as a space for users to relax and enjoy a piece of history made new. The volume encourages a circulatory path that becomes increasingly more private as the user continues back and up the levels. Materiality is used to create a calm, serene environment.

URBAN SPROUT FA LL 2022

Previously a parking garage in the Haymarket area of Lincoln, Nebraska, this redesigned urban building would act as a flexible space for members of the community to access and learn about the importance of local food, see how it is grown, purchase and eat the food, and grow as a community. The importance of food knowledge and food security were addressed by creating greater accessibility to healthy and local foods, and providing resources for members of the community to learn how to sustain this knowledge.

ADAPTATIONS OF VACATED INTERIORS IN A POST- COV ID SPRING 2023

Research

This semester-long adaptive reuse project looked at the effects that Covid-19 had on the American city, and how many office spaces are now going unused. One way that these spaces can be revitalized is by turning some of the space into residences. The first part of this project was to research the context and potential of office to residential conversions, describe our own ideas of home, and learn how that influences the intent of the space. The eidetic image on this space was created to reinforce the ideas of what a home is that influenced this project.

This allowed for the determination of user groups and how space was going to be created.

The next step of this project was to analyze space, program, and code development to make a proposal. Compositional framework studies were completed, as well as a model with blocking diagrams. The floors were then split up into residential units with community spaces, working with code and efficiency. Occupancy loads were determined, and everything was made sure to follow building code for multi-family buildings.

The next steps were designing the residential units and the community spaces. The units were meant to have their own feeling while speaking to the community spaces. In this proposal, the units were meant to make the users feel comfortable and at home while giving them liberty to make the space their own. Light and materiality was essential. The community space designed is a pool and lounge area that spoke to the user group and encouraged a sense of community between the residents.

This project was essential in discovering the importance of research and development in creating a well-rounded project proposal. The opportunity to spend the entirety of a semester on a project allowed for more detailed development and knowledge about the topic. We were given great opportunities to learn more about adaptive reuse with talks from Gensler about unit efficiency and office conversions, and we visited Seattle to tour units and learn more about this topic.

Residential Proposal This office to residential conversion focuses on the idea of bringing home into the non-permanent using strategies that evoke comfort and a sense of belonging.

Home is defined in this sense as a space that one feels comfort and security, be that alone, with family, or with others that they live with. In an urban area, this sense of comfort or belonging can be more difficult considering that the spaces are usually smaller with little to no access to biophilia and the outdoors. This proposal uses strategies that take those issues into account and create a space that may not be a permanent residence for its inhabitants, but it still has a strong sense of home. The units use softer edged arches throughout the space to feel more comfortable, as well as focusing on the kitchen as the primary space. Many people gather in the kitchen, so making it a prime area to inhabit was important in this design. This is also called out in the 3-bedroom unit with a different ceiling condition. The elongated windows allow many opportunities for natural light, creating a warmth in the space that pairs well with the color scheme.

The user group for this project is younger members of the population that are in all stages of life. The units can cater to college-aged students living with roommates, young professionals that are living alone and building a career, or young families that may still be in a transitional phase of life.

Community Proposal

This community space will act as a pool and recreation area for its residents. The space brings in elements of indoor/outdoor living by having a pool that can be either fully indoors or both inside and out, as well as a large rooftop pool deck with many seating opportunities, and a bar and seating area indoors. The space is warm and inviting while using materials that still make sense for a water covered area. This space could be used for any members of the user group, and will be popular among the young adults, families with children, and anyone in between.
