Introduction

My name is Ella Carlock. I am a 21-year-old architecture student with a focus on sustainable and accessible design. I love to be productive - “Idle hands are the devil’s playthings.” I’m always ready and willing to find work. Through my years at Iowa State, I have carefully designed spaces that can be experienced by everyone of this generation and many to follow through clean practices.

The following is my personal portfolio that gives a clear illustration of my work, interests, and enthusiasm through my years at Iowa State. This portfolio includes selected works from my time so far as an architecture student.

Preserving Marshalltown

ARCH 401 | Professor Shelby Doyle

Fall 2024

Designed alongside McKenzie Hunter

Situated in the heart of Marshalltown, Iowa, in the city’s historical downtown, a Carnegie Library sits just a block from the Marshall County Courthouse. Built in 1902, the Carnegie Library was once a gathering place where residents of all ages came to learn, socialize, and find inspiration.

The reimagined Carnegie Library is a response to Marshalltown’s need for a space that fosters artistic expression and community engagement. Our design reclaims this historical structure while adding an addition in order to give it back to the people of Marshalltown, giving it a new identity as a creative hub. The program offers workshops and lessons in an infinite number of creative skills.

The core idea driving our project was flexibility and adaptibility. We envisioned a space with the ability to change with its occupants, enabling it to meet the evolving needs of the Marshalltown community. This concept informed every aspect of our design, from layout to the choice of materials.

Spring 2024

Designed alongside Confident Fandeh

Located in Des Moines, on the edge of Sherman Hill and Downtown, just north of the Krause Gateway Center and Pappajohn Sculpture Park.

In Downtown Des Moines, our project embodied innovation and community spirit. Inspired by a communal need for “play,” we aimed to create a space within the city. Our design sought balance between society and the environment and harmony between all age groups. We envisioned dynamic spaces to enrich the lives of those living in and around our project.

Recognizing Des Moines’ vibrancy, diversity, and creativity, our project aimed to seamlessly integrate into its urban fabric.
