UNDERGRADUATE ARCHITECTURE

SELECTED WORKS 2024

Undergraduate

Architecture Student

I am a fourth year undergraduate architecture student at the University of Waterloo in Canada, presently studying at the Czech Technical University in Prague, seeking a seven month co-op placement from February to August 2025.

I believe the design of the spaces we inhabit play a crucial role in shaping the human experience. As an aspiring architect, I aim to practice with a holistic approach, considering all aspects of the spaces that make up our cities, towns, neighbourhoods, and parks. I am passionate about architecture and landscape architecture that strives to support mutual aid and emphasizes care within communities. I am fascinated by the history of place and the ways in which architecture act as both a window to the past and a propelling agent into the future. Within this framework, I seek to explore the relationship between architecture and ecology, using social, cultural, and environmental context to guide design.

As I continue to develop my skills, I look forward to new challenges and the opportunity to enrich my design education while contributing to the success of your firm.

Place, Time, and Being

Program: Hospice Care Retreat

Location: French River, Ontario, Canada

Date: Spring 2023

Supervisor: Scott Sorli, Lola Sheppard

presence

This project capitalizes on the potential for nature to contextualize life cycles while providing a peaceful space for palliative patients. For many, end-of-life care occurs in clinical environments, disconnected from the natural world. In contrast, this immersive experience allows transitions to be more reflective and peaceful. The thoughtful design is responsive to the differing needs of the occupants.

This unique site on the French River, with rocky outcrops, forests, and expansive views presents opportunities to explore the contributions of architecture and landscape to enhance experiences at the end of life for everyone involved. Time slows, and natural processes are normalized. The thoughtful design integrating interiors and external spaces provides opportunities for reflection and connection. Slowing to the speed of nature is a rare and precious commodity that allows for keen awareness at the end of life.

mutual aid

Commons by the Park advocates for reciprocal mutual aid networks within the community. Through a strategic, fragmented approach distributed across the site, we integrate major mutual aid spaces into and around residential buildings, as well as modular outbuildings promoting inclusivity and addressing diverse demographic needs. By layering mixed-use spaces to create inviting, open spaces, and considering human scale and nature integration, our design aims to combat urban alienation and fragmentation while fostering social interaction. Additionally, our mixed-use buildings exemplify this integration with community-centric amenities (such as coworking spaces, woodwork shops, greenhouses, cafes, restaurants, and co-work spaces) embodying principles of collaboration and inclusivity. Through these initiatives, Commons by the Park strives to nurture a sustainable and interconnected social fabric, promoting a sense of belonging and community cohesion within urban environments.

access

This library provides children and youth in the city the opportunity to use and learn about a broad range of technology that they may not otherwise have access to. Particularly after the recent closure of the beloved Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, public institutions promoting and facilitating learning about science and technology in the city are invaluable.

A hingeless kinetic facade inspired by the opening and closing mechanism of the Bird of Paradise flower clads the South elevation. The unique exterior reflects the program of the library, sparking curiosity and demonstrating the capabilities of technology in the built environment. The architecture strives to strengthen the connection between nature and technology while inviting young people to build crucial literacy skills and be curious about cutting edge technologies that will carry us into the future.

community

This project fosters community among seniors and families of all structures, with emphasis on inclusion, access, and connection to combat housing alienation.

Needs and desires of resident groups are carefully considered in the private, shared and public spaces. Unit structures are flexible, communal dining and kitchen areas faciitate cohousing, and a daycare and clinic within the building make essential services readily availible. Connections between residents are promoted throughout the site; neighbourly interactions in the corridors, large gatherings in communal spaces, while the broader Cambridge community is drawn into the courtyard and up to the park. Residents are connected to one another, the community, and the neighbouring park as the natural environment is drawn down the sloped site and into their everyday lives.

Treehouse

Date: Winter 2021

Materials: Basswood, Balsa, Concrete, Reclaimed Wood

exploration

The relationship between materials and form is a crucial element of design. Through imaginary architecture, Treehouse experiments with cast concrete and different types of wood to contrast and compliment. A forest is a symbol of strength and peace. With a heavy base connected to a finely detailed structure by a staircase carved into it’s ‘tree’, Treehouse is an architectural interpretation of these qualities. It aims to spark curiosity and remind one of the joy that comes from exploring architectural ideas.

Bibliothèque Éva-Circé-Côté

Program: Library Renovation & Addition Competition

Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Date: Fall 2023

revitalization

Bibliothèque Éva-Circé-Côté will define the next chapter of life in the Montreal neighbourhood of Pointe Saint-Charles. The existing library itself found home in a decommissioned fire station built in 1891, and has served the community for decades. The City of Montreal is upgrading it’s many beautiful historic public buildings to meet accessibility standards, ensuring they will continue to act as pillars of communities in the city.

This proposal for the renovation of the existing library and addition to more than double it in size aims to sensitively and creatively address the history of the neighbourhood as well as the diverse and evolving needs of the people it serves.

RE: Ella Caudle

To whom it may concern,

Ella Caudle was employed at Affleck de la Riva Architects for a four-month period from September to December 2023. Ella’s employment at our firm was organized as a work-term leading towards her professional degree in architecture at the University of Waterloo.

Ella is thoughtful, curious, and meticulous, and was much appreciated in our design studio. At a young age and with only a few years of formal training, she was already able to take on considerable responsibility. Ella has a good sense of organization and excellent communication skills. As a native of Ontario residing in Quebec for the first time, she was interested in learning French and advanced quickly in both her conversational and written French.

Ella participated in several different projects and was a patient and helpful team player. Among the projects she worked on were an architecture competition for a library, surveys of existing buildings, and preliminary design development of a sports complex.

We strongly recommend Ella for both professional and academic paths she may choose and wish her the best in all her endeavors.

Yours sincerely,

Towhomitmayconcern,

I am pleased to provide this letter of recommendation on behalf of Ella Caudle. Ella was employed with Campos Studio as an architectural intern for the Winter 2023 term. Founded in 2015, Campos Studio is an interdisciplinary design studio located in Vancouver, British Columbia, that works mainly along thewestCoast ofCanada, The United States andMexico. The studio maintains a varied body of work—including a variety of projects in architecture, public art, and branding. At the core of Campos Studio lies the belief that architecture and design can have a positive impact on our lives and broaden our interactions with the environment and our communities.

During Ella’s employment at Campos Studio, she demonstrated herself to be a competent, motivated, andtalented member of our team who was able to complete tasks efficiently and independently. Ella quickly progressed from more traditional intern tasks, such as creating physical models, producing 3D renders, revising drawings, and working on interior schedules to working with clients to develop the concept, program, plans and massing for a modern passive house in La Laguna, Baja California, Mexico. She gained valuable experience working with the principal of the firm and senior designers andcontributed meaningfully to the studio.

Ella is well-liked and respected by the team at Campos Studio. She works well independently and is also collaborative and enthusiastic to partake in teamwork. She remained positive and inquisitive, which ensured that she capitalized on her learning experience with our studio. She showed an ability to incorporate feedback and improve her work. With this in mind, we strongly recommend Ella to any prospective employer seeking a team player who is ready to take on new challenges andmake a positive contribution. I have no doubt that Ella will prove to be an excellent employee and that the knowledge and perseverance she has shown will guide her in her future endeavours.

Please feel free to reach out and contact us at the studio should you have any questions or require any further information
