Welcome back everyone, In case you missed it, there are national champions on the Elk River! Herbert Hoover High School, Elkview Middle School, Bridge-Clendenin Elementary and Elk Elementary Center all qualified for and attended the 2022 NASP Eastern National IBO/3D Archery Championship in Kentucky last month It was the Elkhounds at Elk Elementary Center, however, who brought home the championship trophy! We are proud of all of our Elk River archers!

Another thing you may have missed: have you heard of Lazy K’s Campground at Elkview? You will want to read more in this issue about Ted and Shirley Keiffer’s 68-acre campground that boasts 3 fully furnished cabins, 30 spacious RV sites, and lots of acreage for primitive, tent camping along the Elk River. Lazy K’s is a hidden gem you will want to visit soon, whether it is for the weekend, the week, or a month. It is a great summer-vacation destination.

It was with heavy hearts that our Elk Reflects this month honors local community leader and running coach, David Fields, who passed away on May 9 after a long illness. As we read and tearfully typed many of the heart-felt posts that were made in his honor, we were humbled by the legacy that he has left behind. It’s not often that we are blessed with someone who has had such an amazing impact on our children’s lives. Our thoughts are with his wife, Sharon, and family.

ELK’S COOKBOOK PIZZA DUMPLING CASSEROLE

abi Strickland Walker of Walker Mtn Eats calls her Pizza Dumpling Casserole Easy, Peasy, and Cheesy and we certainly agree with her! It’s made with many ingredients you have on hand in your pantry, and you use your favorite sauce and any pizza toppings you want. It just doesn’t get any easier with this delicious, quick recipe. Gabi says, “Give this one a try soon!”

PIZZA DUMPLING CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

•

3 ¾ C Bisquick Mix

Step 1:

•

1 C water

•

1/2 t garlic powder

•

1/2 t onion powder

– Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish/pan with cooking spray and set aside. In a medium bowl combine Bisquick, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasonings. Add water and stir until a soft dough forms.

•

1/4 t salt

•

1 1/2 t Italian Seasoning

•

1 16 oz. jar of your favorite Pizza/Pasta Sauce

•

6 oz. Sliced Pepperoni

•

1 C each of any pizza toppings you like (Gabi uses cooked/crumbled sweet Italian sausage, sauteed onion, and banana peppers, but you can choose any of your favorites)

2 C shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Editor's Note: Our son, Nate Tawney, makes pizzas in his Big Green Egg grill and they are amazing as well.

SERVES 4-6 Preheat Oven to 375 degrees.

NOTE: If dough is too sticky, sprinkle in a few tablespoons of Bisquick; if it feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water.

STEP 2: – Divide dough in half and drop dough by tablespoon-sized portions all over the bottom of the prepared pan. NOTE: The pan will not be covered by the dough.

STEP 3: – Drizzle 1 C of the pizza sauce on top of the dough. Layer half of the pepperoni and other pizza toppings on top of sauce. Sprinkle with half of the mozzarella cheese.

STEP 4: – Repeat STEP 3 and layer 1 C of the pizza sauce on top of the mozzarella cheese layer and add the other half of your pizza toppings on top of the sauce. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese.

STEP 5: – Bake 25-30 minutes in the oven or in a pizza oven until golden brown and dumplings are cooked in the center. Let rest for a couple of minutes, cut into squares and serve warm.

It has been another winning season for the Elk Elementary Center Elkhounds, with a record of 77-0 for the past two years, and back-to-back state championships in the Bullseye Tournament. The

Archers included Jaxson Whitehair, Raylee Hammons, Abigail Stephens, Aubrianuh Eggleston, Allie Childress, Lilyan Galwey, Alex McCormick, Brock McClanahan, Evan Woody, Emma Shafer, Lincoln Smith, Kristopher Woody, Claire Hartline, Taylor Wilson, Jaxon Dick, Jack Cantrell, Christina Harper, Karley Bright, Kaliauna Meadows, Shawn Waller, and Alanah Stephens. Head coach is Jeff Mullins and assistant coaches are Ryan Baldwin and Jennifer White.

Coach Mullins said, “The world tournament is coming up June 23-25 at the Kentucky Exposition Center and the Elkhounds will be there for another opportunity to advance their skills and titles.

Furthermore, this is the first year that we have been able to participate from beginning to end, and this year’s team has surpassed all other Elk Center teams in individual and team scores!”

Herbert Hoover High School earned the highest score they have achieved as a team since 2018, with a score of 3310 and ranked 47 out of 215 high schools at Nationals. Archers were: Kara Stephens, Jaylen Perdew, Lauren Mullins, Brooklyn White, Hunter Fields, Rebecca Stodola, Michael Slack, Jakob Shinn, Caely Allen, Presley Cunningham, Haley

Bridge/Clendenin Elementary had a score of 2935 and placed 42nd in the tournament out of 127 elementary teams. Archers were: Khloe Blancet, Elijah Meadows, Mason Mullins, Abigail Gunnoe, Carter Thomas, Tyke Giordano, Jasper Sears, Lily Walker, Leigha Fisher, Sofia Godbey, Peyton Wagoner, Sierra Wagoner, and Isabella Godbey.

The coach is Lori Monk and assistant coaches are Carol Arthur and Regan Melton. Coach Monk said, “We are a small team; you have to have 12 archers to have a team and we have 13!. Our goal this year was to exceed a score of 2900 and we shot 2935 which was our highest score.” Photo submitted by Coach Lori Monk Elkview Middle School (EMS) ArcheryTeam placed 98/205 with a score of 3147 and finished in the top

half of all middle school teams. EMS has competed in 11 of the 13 national tournaments.

Eighth grader Lilli Slater led the way for the EMS girls with a 283. For the EMS boys, Cadyn Holstine led with a score of 275. Coach Gray said, “This year EMS competed for the first time in the National 3D Tournament with nine archers and had a strong showing with Aleks Woody, who led with a score of 271.

t’s a perfect time to plan your family vacation at Lazy K’s Campground on the Elk River.

Experience the peace and tranquility of the outdoors and still have the amenities of restaurants, grocery stores, shopping, and pharmacies just minutes away. Lazy K’s Campground is located just 12 miles outside Charleston on 195 Lazy K Drive in Elkview, WV. Owners Ted and Shirley Keiffer are excited about the upgrades and expansions happening at Lazy K’s. There are 3 fully-furnished rustic cabins, 30 spacious RV sites with 50-amp full hookups with electric, water and sewer available for daily, weekly, and monthly stays. Lazy K’s 68-acre campground allows for hiking exploration and the campground offers primitive campsites for tent camping along the Elk River. There are also three RV pull-through sites for easy access.

Ted said, “We have fire pits and picnic tables at every cabin and RV site, and we are in the process of adding them to the tent sites as well. Also, there are portable restrooms located near the primitive, tent-camping area.”

A small creek runs nearby on the lower level of RV sites, offering a perfect place for children to play and cool off in the summer heat. No West Virginia childhood memory is complete unless you’ve caught tadpoles and splashed around in a creek! There is also a large playground at the campground for the children to enjoy.

Lazy K’s Campground features a catch and release pond. Whether you choose to fish in the pond or in the Elk River, you will find some of West Virginia’s finest fish like muskie, bass, catfish and more.

The three cabins are beautifully furnished with fully equipped kitchens, towels, sheets, and a comfy porch where you can enjoy your coffee each morning.

Cabin #1 is The River Haven which welcomes you as you come into the campground. It has two bedrooms and overlooks a nearby stream. Misty Valley is Cabin # 2 with one bedroom, an upstairs loft bedroom, and a spacious living area. Cabin #3 is Country Roads which boasts 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, and a wrap-around porch with a picturesque scenic view. Every cabin has air conditioning and a washer and dryer.

There are three canoes, four kayaks, and a paddle boat located at the pond for on-pond use only. Ted said, “People can bring their own canoes, kayaks and bicycles or rent them from several nearby businesses. Elk River Get A-Way at Procious has kayak rentals/transportation and The Yak House in Clendenin offers kayak rentals/transportation and bicycle rentals as well.”

There is also a large, covered shelter (24’ x 36’) with picnic tables and electricity available for rent at Lazy

K’s Campground, perfect for your family gatherings, wedding receptions, or other social events. Ted said it can comfortably seat 36 people.

Even though Lazy K’s Campground is tucked away in the hills at Blue Creek along the Elk River, it is conveniently located just 3 miles off the Elkview Exit on I-79. There are several large grocery stores and numerous restaurants nearby. It is only a 20-minute walk to Elkview along the old railroad track and there is an old, hand-carved, stone tunnel that leads

to a large sand-bar beach area on the river. It is a great place for hikers and bikers to explore. It is also centrally located within miles of ATV/UTV trails.

Ted explained, “We have traveling nurses, utility professionals, and family vacationers who rent for the weekend, week, or even the month. It’s just a perfect setting for relaxation while being handy for everything you need. Also, we are very pet friendly so bring your pets so they can enjoy your vacation with you.”

Ted and Shirley were raised in Clay County and moved here in 2006. He said, “We rented our first camp site in 2010 and we have continued to grow since then! We recently purchased adjoining property which should offer up to eight new RV sites next year. We are excited to expand and offer even more amenities in the future.”

A TRIBUTE TO DAVID FIELDS FROM HIS MANY WAPITI RUNNERS David Fields, age 80, of Clendenin passed away on May 9, 2022. He was a running coach for many years with the local schools and running club.

Following the graveside service, many of Dave’s runners honored his legacy by having a tribute run through Clendenin, “including running up Everest-if you know, you know”--Chris Jones. Thank you to Annette Jones and the many runners who shared photos of the memorial run up Everest and of their special memories of Dave.

Note: The Wapiti Runners (Native American word for Elk) is a group of runners 18 years of age and under, who are committed to training 5 days a week.

There are many Wapiti Alumni who are over 18 now who still trained and kept in touch with David. He was not only a mentor in running, but a mentor in life, as you can see from the heart-felt remarks included here.

Chris Jones: The world lost a true hero this week.

I started running with Dave when I was seven years old. I told him that I had lots of energy, and I proved it by earning the nickname Edgy. He was very patient with all of my shenanigans, and I had some of the best memories of my life with him and my fellow Wapitis. Dave was many things to many people, but not in a people pleasing way! He was a war hero to some, and a coach to others.He was a husband, father, grandfather, mentor, teacher, role model, counselor, runner, biker, trainer, and friend. For me he represented a large part of my upbringing. He encouraged and motivated me in more ways than just running. He taught me about life, leadership, humility, and pointed me to Jesus every step of the way. If it wasn’t for his influence, I wouldn’t be 1/1000th of the person I am today. I can’t wait to run with him again on those Heavenly trails.

Cari Hively: Running Everest with several generations of the Wapiti crew was the perfect tribute to honor David Fields; his legacy lives on with each of his runners. It truly is amazing seeing all of the lives he impacted. All that impact will never be forgotten. I am so glad to have had Dave in my life; I can’t imagine how different it might have been without him.

David is survived by his wife, Sharon, and his daughters Tamara Bonazzo and Stephanie Russe and grandchildren Corey and Shane Ruse, Allie Suesli, Gabriela Bonazzo and Nicoletta Fowler.

Great grandchildren are Jordan Russe, Quin Suesli and Carson Fowler.

Matt Paxton: What a day. I was so sad and so happy all in a day. It was surreal. I started off going to Clendenin to attend the funeral of my running mentor, David Fields. I saw people I never even met whom he impacted greatly. I got to spend time with Wapiti runners from 5 different decades. I listened to David Daniels and Chelsea Dawn Smith speak of the impact that Dave had. Chelsea, I didn’t know you well but your words were spot on and I felt as if you knew my exact experience. I knew that Dave had a tremendous impact on my life but hearing the stories and talking to the people was absolutely surreal. Seeing the impact he had on so many was way beyond any words I can use. Dave asked us to conquer Everest one last time so we all did… the energy of that group and the special feeling of running with people I hadn’t run with in 30 years along with his recent Wapiti runners was just beyond description. It was like he knew we needed that after the profound sadness I felt and saw during the funeral and he knew we needed out Wapiti to

AMERICORPS NATIONAL CIVILIAN COMMUNITY CORPS TEAM MEMBER Maria Loaiza is a member of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team that worked on the Elk River Trail in Clendenin and Queen Shoals. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a major in English. ERL is proud to feature her article and would like to thank her and her team, James Buchanan (team leader), Nikolas Bryant, Maria Loaiza-Bonilla, Krystal Spruce, Bridget Kirkham, and Michah Allred, for all of their trail and water trail cleanup.

I joined AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) in July of 2021 on a whim. I’d just graduated from Vanderbilt University where I spent four years dedicating my free time to service, volunteering at various nonprofits in service to immigrants and refugees who’d made Nashville their new home. I had a good feeling then that I was signing up for quite the adventure, and I turned out to be right about that. I even met my future wife!

What I could have never predicted, though, is that nine months later, I’d be in Clendenin, West Virginia, working on a trail in the middle of nowhere which was actually in the middle of everywhere.

AmeriCorps NCCC partners with nonprofit organizations throughout the country, with their overarching mission being, “To strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based national and community service.” As a Corps Member in the Southern Region, over the course of a 10 month term, I’ve served in nine different states with 14 different organizations. Each of these service projects has been its own adventure as I learned how to navigate new spaces, work with new people, and learned to embrace different cultures and communities as if they were my own.

The team learned what we’d be doing in the Elk River area only a few weeks before we started the project.

At first, I dreaded it: “Three weeks of just picking up trash? No thanks!” But our work here turned out to be so much more than that—even more than our project sponsor, the Elk River Trail Foundation, expected. As we got started on our first part of

the trail, a four mile stretch between Clendenin & Queen Shoals, we quickly came to understand the true magnitude of the project. On our first day, our team, which we called Delta 7, pulled about 50 tires and 500 lbs. of trash from the riverbank and surrounding area!

One of the biggest takeaways from my time in West Virginia is to expect the unexpected. I came to this state thinking that I wouldn’t be accepted because of who I am, having the identities that I do, especially as an outsider. However, it feels great to be welcomed and appreciated by the communities that I’ve served.

The town of Clendenin has especially welcomed my team with open arms and I’ve developed a deep appreciation for all of the beautiful nature the state has to offer. My hope is that all of the work we’ve done here will impact generations to come, as the trail and outdoor recreation opportunities along the Elk River grow and continue to benefit both the local community and visitors like us.

As our time here comes to an end, it feels great to be able to say that, in total, we have removed about 150 tires and 8,000 lbs of trash along the Elk River Trail. After completing projects in Sutton, Fairmont, Clendenin and Clay, I’ve now lived in West Virginia for more than two months. My team has built a mile-long trail with the Army Corps of Engineers; assisted over 300 disadvantaged folks with free tax return preparation, returning $407,987 back to WV residents; and now, we’ve cleaned up over 20 miles of trails with support from the Elk River Trail Foundation.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know If you spot these two concrete booths along the Elk River Trail, like Katheryne Popp and her family and Kelly Kryzak Schoolcraft did, and wonder what these are or were, here’s the answer. These small booths housed telephones for the railroad in case of emergencies and for general railroad communications.

Kayakers Are Out and About

The launch sites have been full with kayakers. The water may still be a bit chilly, but it isn’t stopping these kayakers from being on the Elk River. The new launch site at Bream (Rene Mae Drive) is almost completed and paving is expected to happen soon.

Also, the launch site at Blue Creek is more than halfway completed and hopefully will be open in July.

We Walk on Tuesdays If you haven’t heard, the new Elk River Walking Club meets every Tuesday at 6:00 PM at the Clendenin Trail in the upper end of Clendenin. Anyone who is interested in walking is welcome to show up and join in! The club has been walking toward the Queen Shoals trailhead each Tuesday. Whether you want to walk to Queen Shoals or just a half mile, or whatever is your comfort zone, come join in the fun.

Tom Sims, a member of the Club, says, “We hope to see you there to enjoy this beautiful spring weather.

We encourage you to bring your friends. All of us just go as far on the trail as we want and turn around. This is SO good for your health.”

You never know where you are going to find someone reading about the Elk River Trail. David Frex was on an airplane headed home, catching up on the recent trail articles!

Thank you to the Carpentry and Facility Maintenance classes at Clay County Career and Technical Education Center for making picnic tables which are going to be placed along the Elk River Trail near the shelter locations.

Brian Holcomb, their teacher, has his students doing projects for the community each year. From the ‘tiny big house’ in 2016 to many gorgeous, handmade picnic tables which are now located at Hardman’s Hardware,

the Clay County Senior Center, the Clay County High School grounds, T.G. Bradley Campground, and soon along the Elk River Trail.

If you’ve driven down Main Street in Clay lately, have you seen the lovely new wooden planter boxes filled with flowers? Yes, you guessed it: the students made the planter boxes, also! Many thanks to these talented students for all of their hard work to help our Elk River community.

Elk Valley Christian High School Softball Congratulations to our Elk Valley Christian softball girls who brought home the championship win in the WV Christian Athletic Tournament (WVCAT)! They first defeated Grace Christian 23-8 in the semi-finals.

Next, they secured the championship win over Cross Lanes Christian with a score of 16-14.

CHF Gambill Amusement Carnival June 8-11, 2022 in Clendenin The Gambill Carnival will be back in Clendenin this summer, sponsored by the Clendenin Homecoming Festival (CHF). Mark your calendar for June 8-10 and make plans to bring the family for a great time.

This is the sixth year the CHF has hosted the Clendenin festival and carnival for the Elk River community.

President HollieSue Schoolcraft said, “We have decided that we will not have the festivities in Town this year. We are still sponsoring the Gambill Amusement Carnival which will help us raise revenue for next year’s festival.”

Community Summer Festivities Come One! Come All!

PVFD Fire Prevention Carnival August 24-27, 2022 in Pinch The annual Pinch Volunteer Fire Department Fire Prevention Carnival with Myers Amusements will be held August 24-27 this year. It is a great time to enjoy the end of summer while helping the PVFD raise funds for fire prevention activities.

The carnival starts at 6 PM and ends at 10 PM on Wednesday and Thursday but will be open until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday. Food! Rides! Games!

The carnival will be located at 231 N. Pinch Road, in Pinch.

They will wrap up the carnival on Saturday the 27th.

You won’t want to miss another great fireworks show at approximately 9:30 PM on Saturday, courtesy of SERVPRO of North Kanawha and Teays Valley.

Could You Be Suffering From Tech Neck?

Feeling an ache across your shoulders or in your neck during or after using your smartphone or tablet? You could be experiencing a phenomenon called tech neck. Chronic, repetitive strain placed on the neck muscles results from maintaining the head in a downward position while looking at your phone/tablet. When we look down, our head drops forward, our shoulders round, and we lose the natural curve in our necks, thus resulting in pain and spasm. The load placed on the soft tissue in our neck increases by 5 times when we acquire this downward head position. With the average adult head weighing 10-12 pounds, the load placed on the neck can increase to 50-60 pounds when looking down. This injury is being seen frequently as electronic usage increases and is even affecting teens and young children. Long term effects of tech neck are shortening of certain muscles, weakness in others, and rounded shoulder/forward head posture

Common symptoms are generalized aching in the lower neck, shoulders, or upper back, headache, tingling and numbness in the arms/hands, and limited or painful mobility in the neck, shoulders, or upper back. If you find that you are already experiencing tech neck symptoms, you can try these tips to ease the pain: 1) Pay attention to your posture – your ear should be above your shoulder not in front of it 2) Gentle exercise – (A) try looking up to the ceiling and returning to straight ahead position several times (B) complete large backward circles with your shoulders 3) Apply ice or heat to the painful area for 15 minutes If the pain continues, you may need more specialized care. The health care professionals at Elk Valley Physical Therapy are trained to help you get rid of your pain.
