HELLO & Welcome Back! Nothing makes me smile bigger than watching my hometown of Clendenin soar to new heights. This month ERL is happy to bring you some of the exciting highlights from this town, which, in 2016, was totally destroyed by The Flood. Under the leadership of Mayor Kay Summers and the forward-thinking city council, the town continues to surprise everyone, refusing to take no for an answer. Also in this issue, ERL shines the spotlight on model Alexa Allen from Clendenin, who was able to share the runway showcase in NYC during Fashion Week. It was amazing to see her beautiful face on the digital billboards in Times Square. She was chosen to model a customized gown from the ROJEN Empire Collections, designed by Rojen Morris at Star Dreamers Production Talent/Modeling/Company. Our feature focuses on an amazing group of student leaders at Braxton County High School (BCHS). “Volunteering and keeping in regular contact with the community is an important goal of the FBLA organization,“ said their president, Olivia Ramsey. In order to achieve their goals, they have discovered the secret is listening to the community and then responding to their needs through volunteerism. As many of us celebrate our Easter holiday this month with family, church-family, and friends, may we all remain prayerful for our European neighbors. Our hearts break for the refugees who have fled the Ukraine and those who are defending their country. We stand in awe of their strength and conviction. May God place His healing hand over their nation, our nation, all nations, so that we all can learn to live in peace and thrive together. Much love to all,

US Poet Laureate Tuesday April 5, 2022 @ 7 PM Mountainlair Ballrooms Wheeling was a center of West Virginia’s labor movement, and Polish immigrants became a crucial element within the city’s active workingclass culture. Arriving at what was also the center of the state’s Roman Catholic Diocese, Poles built religious and fraternal institutions to support new arrivals and to seek solace in times of economic strain and family hardship. The city’s history of crime and organized vice also affected new immigrants, who often lived in neighborhoods targeted for selective enforcement of Prohibition. At once a deeply textured evocation of the city’s ethnic institutions and an engagement with larger questions about belonging, change, and justice, Wheeling’s Polonia is an inspiring account of a diverse working-class culture and the immigrants who built it. The Humanities Center is pleased to co-sponsor this event put on by WVU’s Native American Studies program, Details forthcoming.

ELK’S COOKBOOK CANNOLI PIE

abi Strickland Walker says, “We all love cannolis and order them anytime we are somewhere that serves them. I think this pie is better than a cannoli because it is so much easier to eat!” Gabi’s Cannoli Pie starts off with a crust of crushed waffle cones topped with a filling that is sweet, creamy, and delicious. Try it for your dessert on Easter Sunday. It’s sure to receive rave reviews from your family and friends.

DIRECTIONS

CRUST

CRUST - Step 1:

•

1 ½ C waffle ice cream cone crumbs (about 8-10 cones crushed up)

•

1 T granulated sugar

•

⅛ t salt

•

6 T butter, melted

•

1 ½ C whole milk ricotta cheese, drained

•

1 8-ounce block cream cheese, softened

•

1 C powdered sugar

•

1 ½ t vanilla extract

•

¼ t ground cinnamon

•

⅛ t salt

•

1 C mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

SERVES 4-6 PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES

– Lightly spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. In a medium mixing bowl, mix together waffle cone crumbs, sugar, and salt. Then mix in melted butter.

Step 2: – Press crumb mixture into the bottom and sides of the prepared pie plate. Use the bottom of a measuring cup to firmly press the crumbs to the bottom and sides of the plate to form an even layer of crust.

Step 3: – Bake the crust at 350 degrees for about 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool completely.

Pie Filling - Step 1: – In a large mixing bowl, beat together ricotta cheese, cream cheese, and powdered sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined.

Step 2: – Beat in vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Then stir in mini chocolate chips.

Step 3: – Spoon into the cooled pie crust. Spread the filling evenly in the pie crust. Refrigerate pie for at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.

THE LITTLE TOWN THAT KNEW IT COULD

he Town of Clendenin is definitely full of activity this spring. There is equipment everywhere, including dump trucks, back hoes, drilling rigs, cement trucks, paving equipment, and even a wrecking ball. Mayor Kay Summers said, “Progress is being made every day to revitalize our beautiful town.” Here is a snapshot of recent activities that are happening in Town!

Big Blue Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Fourteen families are no longer blue thanks to the new Big Blue bridge project near Clendenin. The old bridge was damaged in The Flood of 2016 and it was the only access to the homes on Big Sandy Avenue except for a low-water crossing. Now the residents and first responders finally all have safe egress and ingress to the properties. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony in March, Governor Justice praised WV VOAD, who built the new bridge with assistance from the Mennonite Disaster Service (Ohio). The RISE West Virginia program funded the bridge project. Clendenin Mayor Kay Summers said, “The new Big Sandy Avenue Bridge (aka Big Blue) is 310 feet in length and is the largest bridge of 43 bridges that have been completed by the WV VOAD in response to the devastation of The Flood of 2016.”

Friday, March 4 was an exciting day in Clendenin when the Kanawha County Commission and Indian Lake Fish Hatchery released 1,250 lbs.of rainbow trout into the Elk River. Cabela’s partnered with the Town of Clendenin to offer a $700 gift card for the first tagged fish caught and also offered several other smaller gift cards #FishKanawhaCounty.

Cheston Haynes caught the $700 fish; Tommy Mitchell caught the $250 fish, and other winners were David Tyree $50, Mike Miller $50, Chad Morris $50, Ryan Jeffrey $50, and Madison Ross $50.

Save the Date The Second Annual Chili’N on the Elk Cook-Off & Beer/Wine Festival has officially been scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2022. Mark your calendars and plan to bring your appetite to taste the delicious chili and sample WV craft beer.

Go Red Julie Warden, Government Relations Director for the American Heart Association for WV, was presented with a proclamation on February 14 announcing February as American Heart Month. To celebrate, the local businesses on Main Street displayed hearts and valentines created by Clendenin Elementary School. Mayor Kay Summers extended a special thank you to Clendenin Elementary Principal Gurski for brightening up Main Street! All Elk River schools participated in activities in February to promote healthy hearts.

Clean out the garage, clean up your property, and get ready for the annual spring clean up in Clendenin! The actual Spring Clean Up date will be on April 9, 2022 at the old Herbert Hoover High School near Clendenin. Hours will be 8 AM to 4 PM. Mayor Kay Summers said, “We are designating Friday, April 8 as Get Ready Day so that the community can load up their unwanted items and be ready to haul it to the clean-up on April 9.

Residential debris includes accumulated solid waste, large appliances, air conditioners, 10 Tires with WV I.D., and televisions. They will also accept these recyclables: computers, all metals, car batteries, and electronics. They will not accept gas/ propane tanks, hazardous waste, paint, chemicals or motor oil. No business debris will be accepted and removal of materials from the cleanup site will not be permitted.

Spring Clean-Up

Monarch Village Housing Project Mayor Kay Summers and The Clendenin Town Council are excited about the new Monarch Village Housing Project starting now, which will be located at the intersection of Kanawha/Maywood/Cardinal streets in Clendenin (up from the Clendenin Post Office). Mayor Summers said, “This new housing project will provide 12 units for seniors 55+. We have already received our first application for one of the units!” Joe Sinclair, owner and architect of Sinclair Architecture said, “The building will be three stories with six one-bedroom and six two-bedroom apartments. All units are designed with accessible features and there is one unit that is fully dedicated as an accessible unit. Also, the building will be Energy Star certified. Joe explained, “We have included some overall details and aesthetics to give a nod to the historic buildings that are there now.” The housing project is named Monarch Village, honoring the original railroad Monarch Hotel and train station that were located on this site. Mayor Summers said, “This project is bringing new life to a historic landmark in Clendenin. New Book Kiosk

A new library kiosk will be making its appearance in Clendenin as part of the Kanawha County Library and the Clendenin revitalization project. This kiosk is the second one in West Virginia. The first kiosk was established in 2019 in Marion County right before the pandemic and it has been extremely successful. This new Clendenin Kiosk will be a material/book drop off and pick up center. It is a large vending machine where patrons can browse and check out a book.

Micky Blackwell, member of the Kanawha County Public Library Executive Board said, “Library patrons will be able to check out an array of books plus they can reserve a book and pick it up at the kiosk anytime with 24 hour access.”

Site prep has begun for the kiosk at the former Clendenin Branch Library location on Cardinal Street which was destroyed by The Flood of 2016. Plans also include the kiosk to be located in a beautifully landscaped park setting on the property complete with wifi access.Completion for the kiosk is expected by the beginning of this summer.

Trail Paving Starts Soon Two miles of the new Elk River Trails will be paved in the Town of Clendenin as soon as the weather permits. Ken Tawney, President of Elk River Trails Foundation, said, “We are excited to announce that two miles of the trail will be paved as it travels through the Town of Clendenin. It will allow easy access for wheelchairs and handicapped bicycles so that everyone can enjoy the trail.” The newest section of the Elk River Trails is open from the Clendenin Water Plant in the upper part of town (near the new DNR Boat Launch) to the Queen Shoals Trailhead, consisting of 3+ miles. Whether you are biking, hiking, or walking, check out the Elk River Trails. The Elk River Trails are for foot, bike, class 1 eBikes, wheelchair and horse traffic only. No ATV’s are permitted on the trail and are subject to fines up to $1500. he members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) at Braxton County High School (BCHS) are dedicated to making a difference in their community through volunteerism.

Volunteering and keeping in regular contact with the community is an important goal of the FBLA organization. Olivia Ramsey, BCHS FBLA President said, “FBLA members see that by volunteering, they are keeping in regular contact with the community. Every month FBLA sets goals to achieve and by reaching out and helping in the community, we are accomplishing our goals.”

One of their recent activities focused on a section of the new Elk River Trail which is completed from Coastal Lumber in Braxton County to Hartland in Clay County. The FBLA members walked over 2 ½ miles, picking up trash and debris on the Elk River Trail.

The members who participated in the trail clean-up were Olivia Ramsey, Emily Metheney, Zoey Moore, Braylin Robinson, Kaiden Perkins, and their FBLA Advisor, Mrs. Sarah Dennison. Mrs. Dennison is the Business and IT instructor at BCHS, the school’s FBLA Advisor, and the WVBEA President. She said, “All of the students enjoyed it. It was a great experience and they are excited to come back and visit the trail.” For several students, this was the first time being on the trail, and according to FBLA member Emily Metheney, a senior at BCHS, “It was a great experience and I can’t wait to go back and walk it again.”

Alexa’s NYC dream-come-true appearance was in February 2022 in conjunction with New York Fashion Week and it was truly a Times Square Celebrity Photoshoot Experience. She said, “When I arrived in NYC, I walked two blocks to find my billboard. It was so exciting.” There is true beauty in the message behind Rojen’s Red Empire Collection. Rojen said, “In recognition of American Heart Month, I launched my red empire collection in New York Fashion Week with HiTechMODA Production.'' Alexa, along with 13 other models, were chosen by Rojen to model gowns from her NEJOR Red Empire Collection which was designed to raise awareness of heart disease. Rojen shared, “Despite the advancements made in cardiovascular healthcare, nearly half of the U. S. adults have cardiovascular disease, with heart disease being the number one killer of both men and women, causing 1 out of every 4 deaths. Through advanced research and technology, great gains

have been made in diagnostic tools and treatment methods, but there is still much to be done. Raising awareness of this risk and educating the public was a goal of my Red Empire Collection.” She added, “I was honored and grateful to showcase this collection in New York Fashion Week.” Alexa said, “Working with Rojen has helped me gain confidence. I have learned to use whatever title I am holding to make a difference, whether it is in my community, my state, or around the world.” When she was Ms. Metro Valley-West Virginia United States in 2020 and Miss Infinity 2021, Alexa helped establish The Blessing Box, a small box where local people could donate goods for others to pick up anonymously, in her hometown of Clendenin. “I wanted to raise awareness plus provide a source for much needed items, including free food and toiletries, “ she explained. “Being a model for Rojen’s NEJOR Red Empire Collection to help raise awareness of heart disease and the Rojen Sonadoras Collection for women empowerment was truly an honor beyond words. Our Miss Brooks, The Junior Play, will be performed on March 31st and April 1st. The play is about an English teacher, Miss Brooks (played by Susie Naylor) who ends up having to sponsor the play. She is romantically in love with the coach (Nick Husson) and she knows they will always be fighting over the gym since she is director of the play. Many problems arise because the star athlete, Ted (Ronnie Wheeler) quits the team to have the leading part in the play. One of the student's mothers is on the school board and she gets all hairy because her sweet little daughter doesn't get a part! Miss Brooks has many public and private problems arising. Come and

see how she solves them. The play is humorous and lively... Miss Arthur says, "I chose the play because Miss Brooks has my reactions to sponsoring a play. The students are really eager to work at it, though." Affiliated Financial Group Breaking Ground for New Location

Affiliated Financial Group is excited to announce they are breaking ground for the construction of their new building at 4950 Elk River Road South in Elkview. Randy Young, President and Owner of Affiliated Financial Group, said, “ANR Construction has already started the construction of the building; they had Harmac Incorporated digging and pouring our footers and and we anticipate moving into our new building late this summer.” Currently, Affiliated Financial Group’s corporate office is located in the O.V. Smith’s Office Building in Big Chimney. “Jim and George Smith have been great to lease from over the last three years but we are excited to take the next step and have our own Affiliated Financial Group corporate office building,” said Randy. He added, “We will continue to lease office space at our other four locations.”

The new office building will be a one-story building and will consist of 2800 square feet with plenty of office space and conference rooms. “It will be a showpiece for AFG here on the Elk River,” said Randy.

Once the building is completed, Affiliated Financial Group’s office building will be next door to Door, Decor and Moore and near Elk Family Dentistry and other businesses located on Route 119. The Elk River has seen significant business growth from Mink Shoals to Elkview and in the community of Clendenin. It is exciting to see the Elk River rebound and prosper.

The Herbert Hoover Basketball Boys were Regional Champions AGAIN. It’s been amazing to watch such a talented group of young men. Hoover defeated Westside with a final score of 83-47 to advance to the State Tournament! On Wednesday, March 16, they played in the States at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, and after a hard-fought game, lost to Fairmont 56-47. Two of ERL’s favorite photos are featured here. Photographer Tim Cunningham captured the perfect shot of Coach Josh Stricker’s face as he beamed with pride and happiness when Hoover won the Regional Championship. Our other favorite photo was taken by our student featured photographer, Aubrie Abbott. Her dad, Scott Abbott said it perfectly: “After the boys basketball game I was going through the photos Aubrie had taken. Toward the end of the game when starters were subbed out, Aubrie got one that I think might be one of the sports photos I’ve ever seen. This photo of Devin and Dane Hatfield. It’s been a pleasure to watch these brothers play football and basketball with each other. Quarterback to wide receiver. Point guard to shooting guard (I’ve probably got those basketball positions wrong). I’ve missed getting photos of countless high fives they’ve shared after one will make a 3-pointer or do something spectacular. The HHHS Wrestlers captured fourth place at the WVSSAC High School State Wrestling Tournament with 11 wrestlers qualifying for the States. SOFTBALL & BASEBALL Bases Loaded! HHHS Girl’s Softball and Baseball are gearing up for a great season. Also, Tim captured some preseason HHHS baseball photos in March when the boys scrimmaged against South Charleston at Jeff Holliday Field (you know, on one of the days we didn’t have 8 inches of snow). In their first game against Sissonville, the Hoover boys lost 9-2.
