HELLO
& Welcome Back!
S
o many families are looking for budget-friendly weekend trips and vacations as we all begin to recover from the COVID isolation. It is so good to be able to be outdoors and talk across the fence with our neighbors once again, but we are all ready to leave the house and go somewhere, anywhere, other than our own yard. This month Elk River Living traveled up the river and visited several hometowns along the way. It’s wonderful to grab a bite to eat, visit local businesses, and learn about the communities in our own backdoor. One of our favorite spots was Mountain Laurel Country Store in Sutton, featuring over 40 local crafters and artisans and unique toys, clothing, decor, accessories and carvings. What a fun place to visit, plus you can take the family to the Sutton Monster Museum and, opening soon, the new Big Foot Museum. It’s a great day-trip for the entire family. In this issue we also featured a wonderful business that has been serving Clay and surrounding counties since 1902, The Clay County Bank. When a bank’s motto is This is MY bank, it says a tremendous amount about their pride and commitment to the community. ERL is proud to introduce a new business, Risky Chics Boutique, which just opened at the Charleston Town Center. It is stocked with the latest trends and cutest fashion. Kelsi Shirey of Walton (husband Johnathan), granddaughter of Don and Carolyn Rose Wolfe of Clendenin, is the owner of the new boutique which was formerly located in Spencer, but now has expanded and is located on the first floor of the Town Center Mall. In anxious anticipation, we have also included the schedules for Herbert Hoover’s spring sports and hopefully guidelines will allow us all to cheer on our Huskie teams. ELK’S COOKBOOK AN OLDIE BUT A GOODIE: BUTTERED ONION POTATOES

abi Strickland Walker (of Walker Mt. Eats on Facebook) said she forgot how easy and delicious these potatoes are! She served them recently and her husband, Gary, said “We haven’t had these in a while and they are really good!” Gabi says they are full of flavor, soft and buttery. It’s a perfect side dish to fix for almost any meal, from hot dogs and hamburgers to steak.

DIRECTIONS Step 1 •
Preheat Oven to 400 degrees. Spray an 8 x 8 baking dish with cooking spray. (NOTE from Gabi: You can easily double this recipe and use a 9 x 13 baking dish)

Arrange thinly sliced potatoes in the baking dish. You will want to keep the slices looking like a sliced, whole potato and then just slightly fan them out (see photo).

Generously salt and pepper the potatoes

Melt the stick of butter and add the envelope of dry soup mix. Stir to completely mix together. Spoon the melted butter/onion soup mixture over all of the potatoes. Use a rubber spatula and scrape all of the mixture over the potatoes.
Step 5 •
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.

harleston Town Center has a new boutique with Elk River roots! Kelsi Wolfe Shirey, granddaughter of Don and Carolyn Rose Wolfe of Clendenin, had the grand opening for her new store, Risky Chics Boutique, on February 27. It is located on the first floor of the Town Center Mall (on the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center side) and is stocked with the latest trends and cutest fashion.

Kelsi’s shop was originally located in Spencer, WV, and was called Sassy Sisters Boutique, but after the COVID pandemic and an unfortunate fire in a building on the same block, she decided it was time to change directions. On the shop’s one year anniversary, she reopened her new, charming Risky Chics Boutique at 1019 Charleston Town Center. Kelsi said, “Last year was a heck of a year, and I can’t thank you all enough for your support through everything. I’m excited for our new journey even though I will miss Spencer. I am hoping to see all of our friends at our new location.”

Risky Chics carries products from several local vendors. Two vendors came with her from her former location. Cut-Off Creations (Owner, Stephanie Keiffer of Amma) features beautiful cups, custom pens
and phone grips. Some of her cups even have a built in speaker! Also, Shannon Wolfe of Prichard, WV features hand-painted primitive signs and other home decor. Her Hello Door, Welcome, Faith, Love and Laugh signs were very popular at Kelsi’s first boutique. She also has smaller signs with designs and inspirational words. Shannon will soon be featuring jars for kitchen utensils and other trendy items. Hidden Holler Designs (Owner, Tessa Meissner of Reedy) is a new vendor at Risky Chics who features unique car coasters, badge reels and keychains. Additionally, she will be adding license plates and can koozies to her display. Beautiful crocheted hats for women, kids, and men are also new at Risky Chics Boutique, created by artisan Sherry Hughes of Charleston. These wonderful, soft hats are available in all sizes and colors.

erbert Hoover Huskies are practicing now for a full line up of spring sports now that the COVID guidelines have eased. Basketball, wrestling, tennis, softball, baseball, and track are all gearing up for April events.
Even though event attendance has been limited to grandparents, parents and siblings for the indoor sports, everyone is hopeful that SSAC will have more relaxed attendance at the outdoor events. HHHS Baseball Coach, JR Oliver said, “We're looking forward to getting back on the field and we have a nice home schedule highlighted by several Friday night and Saturday games. Hopefully there'll be no limitations on who can attend the games and we'll enjoy some big crowds..... and some big wins!

Sampling the Goodness at Momma Payne’s Diner We stopped by Momma Payne’s Diner in Clendenin on Saturday morning, March 6, and enjoyed their free Sample-It-Saturday Event. What a perfect way to taste all the delicious meat and cheeses from Walnut Creek, in addition to their other delicious products. We are already big fans of the bacon, turkey, ham, and especially the roast beef. When you are in a quick pinch for dinner, add some au jus gravy to the roast beef, whip up some mashed potatoes and you have dinner! It tastes like it’s been slow roasted all day. The cheeses are amazing, from swiss, white cheddar, mild and sharp cheddar, to our favorite garden cheese, which is awesome on crackers. Also, try their new smoked bacon cheddar cheese curds!

Hammack Hills at Amma kicked off their 2021 wedding season with an Open House on Saturday, March 6, featuring their newest Lakeview wedding venue. With over 4,000 square feet, the Lakeview has its own private lake with a walking bridge, a fantastic kitchen, and a new, elegant bridal suite. This venue also has an outdoor patio overlooking the lake. The perfect place for your wedding, Hammack Hills offers two venues, the original Clubhouse and the new Lakeview. The Clubhouse site also includes an outdoor wedding location. Both sites have 4,000 square feet and include a reception hall, wedding chapel, full kitchen, bridal rooms and outdoor features.

The Hammacks rent their venues Wednesday through Sunday and they are fully equipped with air conditioning, heat, kitchens and more. Bob said, “Having full use of your venue from Wednesday through Sunday makes setup and tear down so convenient. Plus, you can use the facilities for your bridal luncheon and rehearsal dinner, too!”
Horse drawn carriages are available for the bridal party and guests. There are also fire pits and gorgeous sunsets to help make your special day even more memorable. The new bridal suites are elegant with dressing areas that include large mirrors and gorgeous, lighted makeup counters.

ne of our favorite things to do is travel along the Elk River and stop in and visit all the towns along the way. If you haven’t been to Sutton for a while, you will want to make the trip to visit the Mountain Laurel Country Store. It is officially one of our favorite pit stops in Sutton. Mountain Laurel Country Store is located in historic Sutton on 400 4th Street near the courthouse. Their business slogan is “Experience a taste of classic Americana” and they feature products from over 40 local crafters and artisans. David Petolicchio of Mountain Laurel Country Store said, “From the original tin ceilings to the rare American Chestnut wood floors, we feature gifts, locallymade crafts, novelties, and merchandise. Our old-fashioned candy in wooden barrels, classic chocolate bars, vintage label gum, and wooden toys have become a hallmark of the store.” You can’t walk by the wooden toys without activating a marble to watch it roll down the ramps. It’s truly a step back in time. The Mountain Laurel Country Store was built circa 1900 as the W. H. Lee Hardware Store, which at that time, was one of the largest in the state of WV. Now owners Louis and Laurel Petolicchio have created a warm and inviting country store that is a fun spot for the whole family. Additionally, the Petolicchio family is now adding a small cafe where visitors will be able to stop and enjoy a beverage and delicious baked goods. They are hoping to have it open in June of this year.

Other exciting news surrounding Mountain Laurel Country Store is the addition of the new Artisan Displays
Big Foot Museum which will be located next door to the store. Renovations are going on now and if all goes according to plans, the museum will open in April or May. This museum will exclusively feature Big Foot, but the Petolicchio’s are working closely with the Monster Museum in Sutton and the Braxton County Tourism Bureau so that visitors will be able to experience two historic museums while in Sutton. The third addition to the Mountain Laurel Country Store block will be the Appalachian Trading Post, where vendors/crafters/artisans can rent an 8 x 8 or 8 x 10 space to sell their own merchandise inside the indoor farmer’s market-type location. David said, “A lot of consignors are financially limited as to where they can sell their items. The goal of the Appalachian Trading Post is to help support small business owners by offering low cost rental. Their merchandise is truly amazing, and having somewhere to display it will be an asset to them and to the town of Sutton.” Watch their Facebook for announcements on this summers’ events for the grand opening of the cafe at the Mountain Laurel Country Store and the Big Foot Museum. There are also plans to have a Consignment Appreciation Fair outside around the Braxton County Courthouse and Sutton Volunteer Fire Department this spring. David said, “We are looking forward to having a mini festival outside featuring food and local artisans and businesses. It will be awesome for everyone to gather outside and enjoy a wonderful day in Sutton.”

veryone has a special talent, and for JoAnn Jarrett (Holland) it was definitely twirling. In fact, she was a twirling super star and drum majorette during her years at Elkview High School (EHS) where she graduated in 1951. While at EHS, she captured the championship twirler award each year at the premier event, the Daily Mail Kanawha County Majorette Festival. Not only did she excel at this event, but she also supported it by attending the festival each year until she passed away in 2003.
was the drum majorette and twirler at Elkview High School, and in fact, when the band director left, Mimi even conducted the band. JoAnn’s daughter, Kathi Holland (Burton), said, “Mimi may have been my mother’s earliest inspiration to pursue baton twirling.” JoAnn’s younger sisters, Katie and Jackie Jarrett, were also majorettes. JoAnn, however, was the award winning twirler and, as fate would have it, inspired her own daughter, Kathi, to pursue the same dream.
JoAnn’s father sent her to baton twirling camp every summer once she told him she wanted to pursue baton twirling. Her older sister, Mildred (Mimi)
In 1973, Kathi, a 1974 Herbert Hoover graduate, also won first place at the Daily Mail Kanawha County Majorette Festival. She continued on to be the feature
twirler at West Virginia University in Morgantown for seven years while she pursued her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She said, “We had to try out every year. It wasn’t a given that I would return each year as a twirler. There was a lot of competition with all the new twirlers nipping at your heels wanting your position.”
Kathi’s father also played a big role in her twirling. “My dad, John Holland, knew I was graded on the difficulty of my baton twirling in competition, so he came up with the idea to fill a baton with lead for me to practice with and warm-up with before competitions. When people would say ‘She moves faster than the word of God,’ they weren’t wrong! After I warmed up with that Kathi has many wonderful memories of being a twirler heavy lead baton, my actual baton felt light as a feather at WVU from 1974-1980. “The last year I twirled was and I could just fly all over the field!” the first year of the new Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium. Kathi started twirling when she was eight years old and her mother was her coach. “I will always be thankful for mom getting me into competition early,” she said. JoAnn encouraged Kathi to take ballet as well for balance and grace and Kathi said it was definitely a good influence on her twirling. Kathi said, “One day when I was in junior high school, my mother said, ‘I can’t teach you anything else; we need to hire a twirling coach.’ That was when Rebecca Ritchie, a Golden Girl of Purdue University, began working with her. Kathi won the Daily Mail Kanawha County Majorette twirling championship in 1972 as well as many other state and national championship titles.

READER SUBMISSION YOUTH BASKETBALL RESUMES AT KOONTZ GYM This month’s ERL Reader Submission is from 25045--A New Clendenin, Inc. featuring the Hoover Community Youth Basketball League. Jason Cantrell, Assistant Principal at HHHS, is also the President of the Hoover Community Youth Basketball League which plays on Saturdays at the Koontz Gym (25045--A New Clendenin, LLC) in Clendenin. Jason coordinates sign ups, schedules games, orders uniforms and supplies, and works with coaches and parents. Jason said, “We are all volunteers and any money that is made is put back into the League. My day job is serving as the Vice President at HHHS. I love that both of these positions allow me to serve my community.” The League has 5 teams (Thunder, Bulls, Suns, Sixers and Heat) in the 3rd/5th grade division and 4 teams in the 1st/2nd grade division (Lakers, Celtics, Clippers and Warriors). Two teams had to be consolidated after the COVID shutdown in November. The teams are playing from March 6 through April 3. Jason said, “That is five straight Saturdays and in a normal season which would start in fall/winter, we would play 16 games on Saturday and Sundays. We are very thankful to have the kids back in the gym for at least five weekends.” One small positive ray of light from the COVID pandemic was that it gave 25045 - A New Clendenin time to have the gym floor refinished and new scoreboards installed, so the teams have a better place to play!

High Impact Choir Takes the Stage The hills and the Elk River will soon be alive again with the sound of music! The Herbert Hoover High Impact Choir has announced their spring performance schedule. Starting on Saturday, April 10, 2021, there will be two shows at the Elkview Middle School auditorium at 6:00 PM and at 7:30 PM. These shows will feature both the Show Choir and Jazz Choir. Director Kathy Silber said, “Social distance seating will be provided in the auditorium and singers and the audience are required to wear masks. The cost of the performance is $8 per person.Tickets will be pre-sold and seats will be sanitized between each show. Only pre-sold tickets will be honored. Mrs. Silber said, “Watch for links on Facebook/HHHS Red and Blue Athletic Boosters Club and on The High Impact 2020-2021 pages for announcements and tickets can be purchased from any show choir member. There are a limited number of tickets available. There are two other performance dates scheduled, so mark your calendars now. ELK’S JOURNAL WV AUTHOR WITH ROANE & KANAWHA ROOTS! Debbie Richard just signed a contract with Finishing Line Press of Georgetown, KY. They will be publishing her next poetry book and will be doing a preorder campaign soon. The Finishing Line Press published Debbie’s first book, “Resiliency”, back in 2021. She is collaborating with the award-winning artist, Aska Ng (Aska’s Atelier) of Ripley, WV, who will be creating original art for the cover of her new poetry book. Aska was recently chosen to paint a portrait of the late Dick Bowlby, one of the founding members and the longest serving board member of the Roane General Hospital in Spencer, WV. This 30 x 40 oil on linen canvas portrait will be displayed at Roane General Hospital’s newly renovated conference room. Debbie published “Pivot” in January 2020 by Adelaide Books of NY where she received a Readers’ Favorite 5-Star Review. She was also the 2019 NY Book Festival Honorable Mention for Poetry. Her memoir of growing up in West Virginia, “Hills of Home”, was runner up in the 2019 San Francisco Book Festival Awards for Best Biography/Autobiography and received a Reader’s Favorite 5-Star Review as well.
