Hello & Welcome Back! It is a blessing to share more stories with you of the wonderful people and businesses of the Elk River. This month I had the privilege of meeting five hot rod enthusiasts who ran in the 2019 25th Anniversary of the Hot Rod Power Tour. The sun was blazing and the motors were roaring, and they couldn’t have been happier (or more tired!) during their seven-day tour. It is also my pleasure to honor a special duet, Sonny and Honey, who appeared regularly on the Sleepy Jeffers Show, which many of you will remember from the 1960s. There are so many talented individuals who have Elk River roots.
Our business highlights this month are Murdock’s Pre-Owned Auto Sales and Murdock’s Auto Repair in Clendenin and Elk Family Dentistry in Elkview. Keith Murdock is one of the most generous and caring people I’ve ever known. His commitment to serving and giving back to the Elk River community is to be commended. Also, Dr. Joey Adkins and his remarkable staff make it a pleasure to even walk in Elk Family Dentistry. His love for children and for the dental profession has made him a popular choice for so many residents. It’s time for the kids to head back to school, so it’s a perfect time to call Elk Family Dentistry for a checkup.

A Student Voices His Concerns Leaders come in all ages, and newly elected Mayor of Clendenin, Kay Summers, heard from one of her youngest leaders at her swearing in ceremony on June 26. John Wilson, an upcoming fifth grader at Bridge-Clendenin Elementary, presented the mayor with a letter expressing his concerns for the Town of Clendenin, and especially advocated for more youth activities. John Wilson’s list to improve Clendenin 1. Why doesn’t the town have a grocery store? 2. Why don’t we try getting a kid friendly restaurant that doesn’t cost a lot of money? 3. We need a good playground with a swing set for kids of all sizes, jungle gyms, basketball court, and slides. 4. We need the theater opened back up with current movies. 5. It would be nice to have fun activities in town for families on Saturdays.

Mayor Summers, said, “It is important that we all are on the same page and the Town Council and I want to hear concerns and suggestions so that we can work together as a team to help Clendenin grow.” John especially pointed out that the kids in Clendenin need more activities.

In response, one of the town’s first events will be a Back to School Party in Clendenin on Friday evening, August 2 from 5-8 pm. Mayor Summers said, ‘It will be a party for all of the children on Main Street in Clendenin, and will include music, food, and games.”

his month’s delicious summer recipe was submitted by Debbie Richards, author of Pivot and Hills of Home (available at Our-WV.com and Amazon). It is easy to prepare and can be served as an appetizer with crackers or on croissants as a sandwich.
DIRECTIONS

Here’s What You’ll Need

Package of chicken tenders Olive oil Fresh chopped rosemary Salt and Pepper to Taste Toasted pecans, coarsely chopped

(toast about 7-8 minutes Also, you can add Roma Cherry Tomatoes or fresh quartered tomatoes if you want. Good tomatoes will naturally sweeten the dish. 1 stalk of celery 3/4 cup of red seedless grapes (halved)

For the Dressing I cup or so of good mayonnaise (recommended: Hellmann’s)

Roast a package of chicken tenders with olive oil, fresh chopped rosemary, salt and pepper (line your baking sheet with parchment paper for a very easy clean-up). Once roasted, chop the chicken up by hand with a chef ’s knife and cutting board - a chopper will shred it and doesn’t give the same texture - (this was about 2 cups chicken). Add about 1/2 cup or so of toasted pecans, coarsely chopped (toast about 7-8 min at 300 degrees). Toss it together and let it chill (several hours is best so the flavors will marry, but it’s also good after about an hour...if you can’t wait). Serve on a croissant or crackers (Also great on King’s Hawaiian bread).

time they were officially named as one of the five nominees for the 2020 Class of the WVMHoF. Mark Bates, local musician from Hurricane, performed one of their songs, Dumplin Pie, in honor of their nomination. Other Class of 2020 inductees included Larry Groce, Mayf Nutter, Ethel Caffie-Austin, and The Hammons Family.
any Elk River residents may remember the Sleepy Jeffers Show which aired in Charleston on WCHS-TV in the1960s. Sleepy played “Uncle Willie” and he and his wife, Honey, lived in Youngs Bottom near Clendenin. Honey, who was half of the famous Nial “Sonny” and Honey Davis Twins, were a mandolin-andguitar vocal duo who appeared regularly on the show. The honors just keep coming for them, and at 93 years of age, Sonny and Honey, were named as inductees into the 2020 class of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame (WVMHoF).
Sonny is the grandfather of Pinch resident, Chris Gregory. Chris said he had always heard their “stories on the road” as a kid, but it wasn’t until his grandfather Sonny took him to Nashville at age 16 that he realized how successful grandpa really was. He said, “We had seats on the first row at the Grand Ole Opry and Porter Wagoner was shaking hands and visiting with the crowd and suddenly famous musician, Grandpa Jones, peeked out through the curtain and saw Sonny and Chris sitting there. He shouted, “Sonny Davis! Is that you!” Grandpa Jones immediately took them back stage.” Chris said it was a special memory that he would always have.
In May, 2018, “Sonny and Honey Day” was held at the Charleston Town Center by the WVMHoF to honor the duo. At age 92, they autographed photos and told stories while The Davis Twins’ music played in the background. Sonny said they sang their first song together, Jesus Loves Me, in church when they were 3 years old. That was the first of more than 200 songs. WVMHoF said Sonny and Honey’s music “bridged the gap between country and rockabilly, which was an integral part of the WV music scene from the 1940s-1970s.”
At one time, Sonny and Honey were the number two duet in the nation and received more than 6,000 fan letters a day in the mail
On March 20 of this year, Sonny and Honey returned to Charleston Town Center, but this

Sadly, Honey passed away on May 18, 2019, at age 93, shortly after the ceremony which announced their nomination as an inductee in the class of 2020 WVMHoF. The official 2020 induction ceremony will be held at the WV Culture Center Theater on April 4, 2020 and will be broadcast live around the state on WV Public Broadcasting.

and even had their own fan club. The WVMHoF stated that “Sonny was also a popular disc jockey on Charleston station WCHS and Logan station WOW, and was the first DJ on St. Albans station WKLC. They also were regulars on a live daily morning television show at WCHSTV in Charleston, WV.�

Mike just completed his tenth year as principal at HHHS. He was hired ten days before the start of the 2009-2010 school year. At that time, he was the vice principal at South Charleston High School. When The Flood of 2016 rendered Herbert Hoover as unable to be occupied, Mike found his role as principal very different. His students and staff not only did not have a building, but many of them had lost their homes as well. It was indeed a broken time for much of the community. Mike said, “We refused to use our situation as an excuse and we refused to fail.” He said what they’ve been through has made them stronger. “The reaction in the aftermath has been hard work from the kids, from the staff, and from the community. Our enrollment is up 30 more students since the flood!”

Mike said, “The greatest part of being a principal is the interaction with the students and being able to see them accomplish remarkable things, things they didn’t even know they were capable of doing!” Last year U.S. News and World Report named Herbert Hoover as the 14th best high school in the state. In 2014 they were also named as a WV School of Excellence. He said, “The students, staff and community are proud of these awards and we hope to get better every year.” Mike is grateful for the efforts of the faculty. He said, “Our faculty are a special group who have helped our kids fight through adversity and have kept the students’ spirits high.” The process is moving forward to begin construction on the new high school. Mike said they are far along in the planning stages, and they are hopeful to get the go-ahead from FEMA soon. Mike said, “I am extremely thankful for the ongoing support from Dr. Ron Deurring, Superintendent, and of the Board of Education.” Mike also said he is thankful for the support

of Elkview Middle School, Elkview Baptist Church, all of the churches, the YMCA, YWCA and the community. “We are fortunate to have so many people locally to help us.”

This year will be the first group of graduates who have never attended the old Herbert Hoover High School. Mike said the students and he talked early on, and they were adamant as long as they were together and in their community, they would be happy. “It’s not the building that makes the school, it is the hearts inside,” he said.

ELK RIVER HOT RODS HIT THE ROAD “We traveled over 2100 miles in 7 states in 7 days, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the American Hot Rod Tour. It was an exciting week that none of us will forget.” -Ron Jones
Five friends from Elk River decided to do something none of them had ever done; that is, be a part of the 25th Anniversary of the Hot Rod Power Tour this past June. Ron Jones, Blaine Shepherd, Randy McMillen, Bruce Persinger, and Ted Thomas joined over 6,000 other drivers and their vehicles to celebrate the anniversary tour. Bruce Persinger had just finished restoring his 1948 Chevy truck and it only had 1,000 miles when he pulled out of Pinch to head to the tour’s starting point in Concord, NC. He said, “I loved driving on the country roads and seeing the beautiful farms and towns along the way.” He said he would actually like to go back when he could stop and visit more. Bruce will always remember travelling through NC on that weekend. He said, “People were actually sitting along the road waving at us
as we drove by. It was such a great feeling!” The highlight of the trip for Bruce was driving his truck on the Bristol Speedway which he said was “an awesome experience.” Bruce’s son, Charles, is building a truck now and Bruce hopes that they can go on the tour next year together. He said, “We have spent a lot of quality time working on vehicles together. It’s the best pay day for me.” Randy McMillen of Pinch is one of the newest members of the hot rod group. He has only had his 1964 Chevy truck for about a year and a half. He said all of the other guys are long-time, hot-rod car enthusiasts. Randy said he, Blaine and Bruce were friends before, but he had not met Ron or Ted. “It has been great making new friends and enjoying quality time based on the passion we all share for restoring trucks.” He, like the other

guys, said the highlight of the trip for him was running the track at Bristol. “The second highlight for me was having the opportunity to see such a diverse assembly of cars and trucks. As a car enthusiast, I enjoyed seeing cars from everywhere and meeting the different drivers. For example, we met a dad and daughter from Seattle and a couple from southern California. There were people from all over the United States and from other countries as well.” Blaine Shepherd agreed that his favorite part of the trip was the three laps he ran in his 1968 Chevy truck on the Bristol Speedway. He said, “There were no restrictions. We just signed a release and off we went! There were 20 vehicles on the track at a time and it was amazing to see just how fast you could go around the track. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience!”
Blaine said arriving at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on day one was really exciting as well. “Just to see the 6,000 cars and trucks and drivers was so wonderful.” He also said it was so special to be welcomed by residents in the towns as they would drive by on their tour route. “People would be sitting on street corners and intersections and they were all waving at us, excited to see us come through.” Blaine said their group also took a side trip to Mayberry and visited the jail and service station from the Andy Griffith Show which was a special treat. The tour started on Friday, June 7, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord NC. On Saturday there was a car show, live music, drag strip events, COMP Cam Dyno Challenge, an appearance by Lucky Costa of Hot Rod Garage,

and presentations by Painless Performance Products and Chevrolet Performance. The tour’s next destination was Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, VA. Again, there were more car shows, vendors, live music, VIP interviews and giveaways and a Chevrolet Performance Presentation. Monday, June 10, was an exciting stop on the tour at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol TN. Ron Jones said, “My favorite part of the trip was running my 1933 Chevy truck on the Bristol track.” Our group had bought tickets to participate in this event and there were no restrictions-you just ran with it for three laps.” Ron said he would go back tomorrow and do it again! Restoring vehicles has been a hobby of Ron’s for many years. This, however, was the first time he had participated in the Hot Rod Power Tour. He said, in 2014, Charleston, WV was actually one of the destinations on the tour and some of the guys went down and talked to everyone and saw the cars on display. “With this being the 25th anniversary and the tour route being here on the east coast, we all made the decision to participate,” he said. Ron also stated that “our guys do most of the work ourselves, whether it is mechanicing or painting. We have ‘garage night' on Thursday evening and we all get together at one of our garages and either work on a project or just spend the evening talking. It saves a lot of money, but it’s more about the joy of our labor.” Ron and Ted are also members of the Golden Oldies in Charleston and participate in the car show at the State Capitol on Labor Day weekend.

Ted Thomas of Falling Rock made it unanimous that all five guys’ favorite part of the tour was running their trucks on the Bristol Speedway. Ted said it was so exciting to run his 1948 Chevy street rod on a real track. He explained that street rods are more modernized with AC, disc brakes, etc. Bristol was the only track where they could purchase tickets and actually run on a track. “There was a drag strip open to participants at a couple of the speedways, but our group did not do that,” he said. Ted has been working on street rods as a hobby since 1990. He and Ron have been friends for many years, and he has really enjoyed getting to know the other guys. “That’s probably another one of my favorite parts-meeting the vendors and all of the other drivers and spectators. It’s just a great group of people with a common interest,” he said. On Tuesday, June 11, the tour then travelled to the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, KY with more car shows, vendors, live music, Autocross, VIP interviews and giveaways, and Chevrolet Performance Presentation. The tour’s next stop was at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, IN. The shows and events continued here, as well as an appearance and autograph session with John Force, Robert Hight, and Austin Prock. The next day they continued the tour to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, IN with more car shows, live music, appearances by Lucky Costa of Hot Rod Garage and Sponsor and VIP interviews and giveaways. The tour concluded on Friday, June 14 at the Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk OH. Long Hauler

Awards were announced for the drivers who finished the tour. Our five Elk River participants received a plaque and a t-shirt recognizing their Long Hauler accomplishment. The last day of the tour included car shows, vendors, music, drag racing, COMP Cams Dyno Challenge, sponsor and VIP interviews, burnout contest and an Edelbrock Presentation. Even though it was a long seven days that usually began at 5 AM, the guys unanimously agree it was a week to remember. Ron said, “If anyone wants to run this tour, it is definitely worth it. Seeing over 6,000 vehicles from all of the United States and meeting so many wonderful people made it an unforgettable experience!”

r. Joey Adkins, DDS, has been serving patients on the Elk River since he was first an associate dentist with Dr. Sam Carnes in 2004. He purchased Elk Family Dentistry from Dr. Carnes in early 2005. Originally Dr. Adkins had planned on going to medical school, but a friend encouraged him to look into the dental profession. Dr. Adkins said, “I did some shadowing of local dentists in the Charleston area and I really liked it.” He said, “I have always liked drawing and building things, and with dentistry, I get to be an artist and I get to construct and create when I’m restoring teeth.” Dr. Adkins graduated from WVU School of Dentistry as

He said that nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas” is an option we offer to make patients feel more comfortable during certain procedures. “It is not intended to put you to sleep. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable and the effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed and oxygen alone is administered.” Dr. Adkins recommends that patients have their teeth cleaned a minimum of twice a year. He said some patients require more, but generally speaking, insurance carriers will pay for two cleanings per year. He said, “Kids should be seen as soon as they receive their first 2-4 teeth and then we typically decide after that when their actual visits will start regularly.” He explained that this enables them to talk about how to clean their teeth and maintain healthy habits. “At age two is typically when regular routine cleanings start,” he explained. “Kids will normally have a full set of primary/baby teeth at that point, totally 20 teeth. The key to kids, in my opinion, is routine visits that eliminate there being a first time experience with a child already having a toothache.” Dr. Adkins said this helps with management of a kids’ behavior and

ELK REFLECTS THE ELKVIEW BRIDGE AND THE SAND PLANT
This month Richard Bashlor from the Elk River Museum of Kanawha County (located on the second floor of the Elk River Community and Education Center at Elkview) shared some special memories. Reminder, the museum has a collection of individual stories written or submitted by the Elk-Blue Creek Historical Society. Volumes II ($10) and III ($30) are available for purchase. Also, check out the old swimming hole where all of the teens used to hang out at the mouth of Coopers Creek during the 1950s and 1960s. It was at the old Sand Plant at Big Chimney. Richard said, “The plant got their sand out of the river there and that made the swimming hole. It was deep, too! It was a popular destination back then. You can actually see the beach, an island, when you cross the Big Chimney bridge. It is on the left side of the bridge.

Elk River native, Jim Damron, HHHS class of 1991, just released his new book, “Smoke Screening, Narratives to Navigate Caregiver Burnout.” Jim says, “The stories are real. Each story has its own burnout lesson, and every lesson to be learned is practical, doable, and valuable.”
Jim is the son of Jim and Sue Damron of Big Chimney. He is married and currently lives in Charlotte, NC. He is an author, coach, educator, and speaker for Healthcare Providers and Caregivers. He is also the creator of Grapevine Academy, an online discovery platform that helps improve the care of caregivers by offering online courses for medical professionals. Excerpt from Smoke Screening, Narratives to Navigate Caregiver Burnout: (Amazon. com) “One afternoon I marched down the hallway, opened the door to Dave and Buddy’s room, and positioned myself strategically between their two beds. Each one could see me, but neither could see the other. Then I began an improvisational stand-up routine. I cracked one joke after another. I told one entertaining story followed by another. Dave and Buddy were not amused. Every quip or lighthearted remark was met with stares and the familiar cricket sounds. Tough room! I thought. It’s a tricky thing, dealing with life and death. There is nothing funny about facing your demise, but being able to find the sunbeams of humor in a darkened room can provide enough relief to change a perspective. I kept going. I tried self-deprecating humor, annoying observations, and funny anecdotes one after another. At one point, Buddy tilted his head to one side like a dog trying to decipher human language. These guys must think I’m nuts, I thought. At least neither one is yelling or telling me to leave. It’s a start. Undeterred, I continued. “Did you hear about the guy who…” I said. “A funny thing happened last week when I…” I continued. Finally, after what seemed like ten minutes of blank stares, something strange happened. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Dave’s bed shaking. The sheets that covered his face trembled, and the top of his head quivered in union. Intrigued, I walked over to Dave’s bed, slowly pulled back the bed sheet, and saw it, a laugh. “Ah ha!” I shouted. “I knew you had it in you!” For the first time since Dave was admitted to the nursing facility, I saw him smile. I savored the moment. A breakthrough had occurred. Dave experienced happiness. He expressed enjoyment. While I soaked up the moment, another sound emerged on the other side of the curtain.”
