Hello & Welcome Back!
A
s we put together this month’s magazine, I was reminded of how blessed I have been with the special people in my life. Our Elk Reects features Dalton’s Department Store and I could hear Helen Dalton’s little voice in my mind, always greeting everyone with a smile and a hug when you entered their store. The photo of Dalton’s at Christmas had been submitted at one time on Facebook by Phil McAlister, 94, who passed away this past September. He was such a special man and I miss seeing him when I walk into Momma Payne’s Diner in Clendenin. He was clearly a Clendenin legend. Our Elk River Hero this month is Sid Oliver who just passed away this last month. There is nothing harder than watching a loved one suffer and our hearts are saddened to lose a great man like Sid. We lost our mother in January and we understand the pain the family and community felt at his passing, especially here at the holidays. All of us who grew up in Clendenin knew Sid and he treated us like one of his kids. Our lives were richer because of him. Reecting, this may be why I love writing the Elk River Living magazine. It is always like going home. There is someone who remembers me, or one of my brothers and sisters, my mom, my dad, my grandparents...it is home. This holiday, take the time to remember those who have been a part of our lives, who helped shape us into the people we are today. Their wisdom and guidance and love are still in our hearts even if they are gone from our lives. Merry Christmas everyone and I send my love to all of you.

Here’s What You’ll Need

2 ½ sticks Butter (preference: Land of Lakes) 2 C White Sugar 2 C light Brown Sugar, packed 1 C Heavy Whipping Cream ⅓ C clear Karo Syrup Pinch of salt 3 Blocks White Almond Bark, chopped fine (available at Walmart or grocery store in the baking aisle) 1 7oz. Jar Marshmallow Creme 1 t. Pure Vanilla 1 T. Maple Flavoring 1 C. Pecans, toasted and chopped*

In a heavy saucepan, slightly melt the butter and add all the white sugar, brown sugar, heavy cream, clear Karo syrup, and a pinch of salt. Stirring constantly, bring to a bubbling boil. Reduce heat to medium. Cook and stir constantly for 5 more minutes (no more). Remove from heat. Stir in the chopped White Almond Bark until melted. Stir in the Marshmallow Creme until melted (mixture will be thin). Add the Vanilla and the Maple flavorings. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture starts to thicken. Stir in the nuts and pour into a lightly buttered dish. TIP: I use a large, heavy saucepan with a long handle and a wooden spoon.

Elk River Goes to the States!
W
ow, if you haven’t heard, congratulations are in order for all of our kids on the Elk River. Herbert Hoover High School had teams traveling to the States, including Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country and Cheerleading. This is in addition to the HHHS Golf Team placing fourth at the States which ERL featured last month. Also, the Elk Valley Christian School Girls’ Volleyball Team qualified for and won the WVCEA State Championship and the EVCS Golf Team placed second in the Victory Christian Invitational. This fall was indeed a season of celebration for all of these amazing teams, despite the COVID setbacks!

Hoover Gridmen Show True Grit the momentum for a 34-33 victory. All fans were on their feet cheering. Stat highlights include Hunter Bartley carrying 17 times for 92 yards and Jacob Burns catching six passes for 119 yards. The Huskies advanced into the quarterfinals, playing Oak Glen Golden Bears on Saturday, November 21 at the Oak Glen Sports Complex but lost 53-26. The game was tied early; however, Oak Glen secured a 41-10 lead by halftime and continued their lead to win the game. Hoover continued on page 25

Both sides of the road were filled from the old Herbert Hoover High location to the I-79 Exit on Friday, November 13, with Hoover Football fans cheering and waving signs. Kanawha County Deputies and the Clendenin, Frame, and Pinch Volunteer Fire Departments escorted the boys as they left for the State Playoffs in Beckley. If you think that was exciting, you should have been at the first playoff game against unbeaten Liberty Raleigh. A rally at the end of the fourth quarter, led by Nick Grayam throwing a 10-yard pass to Devin Hatfield, allowed Hoover to secure

help with meals. Elkview Baptist Church and Clendenin Nazarene Church fed the team the preplayoff meals both weeks. The community sendoff parade for the second playoff game started on Saturday the 21 at the old HHHS High location and traveled up US Route 119 to the Clendenin I-79 Interstate exit.
It was an exciting game with Elk River fans cheering from the stands and from home. Huskies are always number one in our hearts and they played a strong game. The last time these two teams played was in 1993 in the AAA Playoffs (in the second round with the Huskies winning 36-20). (Editor’s personal bragging note: we were at that game and our son, Nate, played an outstanding game sacking their star quarterback several times). We have the video tape if you want to come by and watch it with us!)
The donations also helped provide a live stream of the game for those who could not attend. The HHHS football team is thankful for all of the business and community support. Head Coach Joey Fields said, “I first want to say how appreciative I am, and I know our kids are of the awesome send offs before the game. It’s not like this everywhere. That was special and I relayed that to our team. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of a couple of State Championship Teams, and I have never seen anything like that. Numerous donations from businesses and the I always heard how strong The River is, and now community helped secure a bus for the team I see and feel it first hand. Thank you for those to travel to Oak Glen Sports Complex and to special moments for our team!”
EVCS Volleyball Girls Capture the WVCEA Championship The Elk Valley Christian School Volleyball Girls wrapped up this year’s State Tournament with a Championship win! They finished their season 9-3 with a final 3-0 win against Mercer Christian Academy to qualify for the championship round at the State Tournament.

HHHS Volleyball Girls Serve Up the Wins Huskie Nation again lined the road on November 12 from Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church to the Interstate, this time to send off the Herbert Hoover Volleyball Girls Team to the WVSSAC AA State Tournament. It had been four years since the team qualified for the States. The Lady Huskies finished their season 16-9. They advanced to Sectional and Regionals as runnerup (4 seed) to the Shady Spring High School team that was later named State Champion. The team played Friday morning, November 13, at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center against Robert C. Byrd High School. Despite a heartbreaking 3-0 loss, the team was celebrated on the River for such an awesome season.

The HHHS Boys Soccer team left for the WVSSAC AA/A State Tournament on Friday, November 5 with a grand send off from Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church parking lot, past the school and along the road to the Interstate entrance, with the community cheering them on as they travelled to Paul Cline Memorial Park in Beckley.

Their first game was against Fairmont Senior, the number one seed and defending champions of the State Tournament. Fairmont Senior quickly scored three goals in the first seven minutes, but the Huskies continued to play their hearts out. Senior Dustin Stewart, #4, scored Hoover’s goal, with a final score of 8-1. Bryson Beaver had 1 assist and Gabe Deel had 14 saves.

The HHHS Boys Soccer team ended their season 5-5-2. Their only losses were to Charleston Catholic and Fairmont Senior who both qualified for the State Tournament. They beat Lewis County 3-1 and Robert C. Byrd High School 3-0 in the Region 2 Section 2 sectionals and were Region 2 Champions. They qualified for the Final Four Tournament as the 4 Seed. This was the first time the HHHS team played in the WV Boys State Soccer Tournament.

HHHS Cross Country Boys Qualify for the States The HHHS Cross Country Team had a tough season around the WV COVID mandates; however, it was still a great season with three team members qualifying for this year’s State Meet.
The cross country boys team finished second at the Region 3 Meet and the girls team did not have a full team to qualify for the States. Coach

Coach Luke Teel said, “We were only able to participate in three meets due to the COVID restrictions and at one point, we were not even sure we would have a chance to compete. In fact, we actually were not able to compete until the end of our season.” The team ran in the Kanawha County Championships, the Region 3 Meet, and the State Meet.

Cheer competition changed as a whole this year because of COVID regulations. All stunting was removed from the routines. “Stunting has always been a strength of the HHHS cheer team and we
had to create a new type of routine we aren’t used to,” said Carly Gandee, Assistant Coach. The new competition routine consists of jumps, tumbling, dance, and a cheer. Head Coach Jamie Hays said, “At first it was a real disappointment to the Seniors and the other upperclassmen because they love to stunt. It was a huge adjustment to put together a new routine to get to States.” She added, “The girls rolled with the punches, accepted the challenge, and have been resilient adapting to the requirements.” Evidence of their resilience occurred during the Regional competition when the sound system continued on page 32

The first hurdle they had to overcome was to find a place to practice. With COVID and social distancing requirements and most recreation centers closed, their options were slim. Coach Gandee said, “We would grab an hour and a half at Elkview Middle School after the volleyball teams completed their practices in the evening or wherever we could find a gym that would have availability. We also practiced in the grass, the commons area and parking lot at HHHS, the portable hallways--whatever we could find to learn or walk through the routine and have a spot to practice.” Coach Hays added, “There were days that between the rain, the color of the COVID map, and no availability inside, we just didn’t have practice. This year we’ve challenged
The team is now updating and enhancing their routine with the comments they received from the judges at the regional competition. The team first does a cheer that is required to be 3040 seconds and then they go to the two-minute, open routine. “I’m really proud of our girls. They have stepped up their tumbling and we are working hard to perfect our routine for the State Competition,” said Coach Hays. Members of the cheerleading squad include: Seniors Halle Dodd*, Allie Douglas*, Kennedy Fox*, Haley Fragale*, Kelsi Gurski*, Ashton Molek*, and Lexie Ramos*; Juniors are Brooke Elmore* and Elsa Mahoney; Sophomores are Trinatey Brown alt., Brianna Epperly, Joey Frame*, Brooke Johnson, and Paige Teel alt.; Freshmen Addi Burdette*, Kyra Jordan*, Klaire
Kinder alt, Chloe May alt., Jaelyn Mullins*, and Paige Spencer*. There are 20 members on the squad but only 13 plus 2 alternates are allowed for competition. (* competition squad) The cheerleaders are selling State cheer competition t-shirts (short sleeved $15, long sleeved $20) to help with hotel and food expenses when they travel to the States on December 12. EVCS Golf Team is Back The Elk Valley Christian School Golf Team was reinitiated this year after it had been inactive for seven years. Under the direction of Mike Wilson, Head Coach and Principal, and Mike Bartlett, Assistant Coach, the team roster includes: Seniors Gracie Frame and Ethan Chapman, Sophomore Evan Chapman, Freshmen Kolton Bartlett and Isaiah Sloan, and eighth grader Jake Leadmon. This year the team was able to play four matches around the COVID restrictions. There were three dual matches and they won two of them. Also, they played one tournament, the Victory Christian Invitational, and placed second. Their season concluded on October 22.

Coach Wilson is extremely proud of the team. He said, “We are hoping the success of this years’ team will lead to more involvement and even more success next year. We anticipate more Christian schools in WV starting golf programs in the near future.” The golf team is co-ed and is open to all boys and girls in grades 6-12. Coach Wilson said, “It is truly a lifelong sport.” WVCEA does not have a State golf tournament but the Elk River is very proud of the EVCS team being back and doing well this season.

West Virginia has been facing an opioid epidemic that is having a huge impact on our communities. Between 2001 and 2015, Kanawha County had the most oxycodonerelated overdose deaths in West Virginia, and between 2011 and 2015 the third most heroinrelated overdose deaths. Surprisingly, from 2012 to 2015, the majority of oxycodonerelated overdose deaths occurred in persons between the ages of 45 and 54. This is not just affecting WV. In October of 2017 the opioid crisis was declared a nationwide Public Health Emergency. In the US, patients admitted to the hospital due to opioid-related issues are more likely to be white, 50-64 years old, Medicare beneficiaries with disabilities, and live in lower-income areas. In 2015, the number of fentanyl-related overdose deaths in WV significantly increased. These alarming statistics drive the need for change in our community, and that’s where physical therapy (PT) comes into play.

Sidney (Sid) E. Oliver Sr.
T
his month ERL would like to remember and honor Sid Oliver, 81, who passed away November 6, 2020, at the Hospice House Charleston after a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Clendenin and his support for the community was well known and greatly appreciated. He loved his Elk River community and the Town of Clendenin, especially its schools. He loved attending games and cheering on the Herbert Hoover Huskies. He especially loved baseball and rarely missed a baseball or softball game. His son, J R, is the Herbert Hoover head baseball coach and his daughter, Anita, played Little League softball. He also loved the HHHS Band; his daughter Carla, was an HHHS majorette. Sid was a member of the Clendenin Advent Christian Church. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and Church Bus Driver. He was also a member of the Clendenin Masonic Lodge #126 AF&AM, 32 Degree Mason with Scottish Rite Bodies, and Beni Kedem Shrine. He served as Past Patron of the Thelma Chapter 24 OES. He also was a leader in his hometown of Clendenin where he served on Town Council from 1971 to 2016. He also served as the Mayor of Clendenin.

Sid was married to Eva June Oliver for 61 years. His daughters are Carla Oliver Yaquinta (John) of Bridgeport and Anita Oliver Edmonds (TJ) of Clendenin. His son is J R Oliver (Kim) of Pinch. Grandchildren are Tony, Gina, Maggie, Mandy, McKenzie, Kyle and Claire. Great grandchildren are Jimmy, Elise, Peyton, Ben, and Tensley June (due in February). Special cousin is Brenda (Bill) Casto.

There was nothing more important to Sid than his family. His face would light up when he talked about his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Those of us who grew up in Clendenin and knew Sid were never strangers to him. He always had a big smile when he would see us. We were all his extended ‘kids’ and we were blessed to have him in our lives. Sid was the son of the late Clyde “Pete” Oliver and Clara Ann Huffman Oliver. He has a sister, Billie Rose (Bob). He was preceded in death by his siblings Madeline Oliver, James Oliver, Juanita Rucker and Bob Oliver.

his December ERL would like to remember Clyde and Helen Dalton of Dalton’s Department Store in Clendenin. There was nothing more gorgeous than all of the display windows decorated and adorned with lights for Christmas. Many of our first jobs were wrapping Christmas gifts at Dalton’s. Helen and Clyde,both now deceased, loved the Town of Clendenin and all of its residents.
