AUGUST KANAWHA COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY UPDATE The Elk Valley Branch (304.965.3636) and the Clendenin Branch (304.548.6370) of the Kanawha County Public Library are open for limited library services. Clendenin Branch is open 12-7 Tues., 11-4 Wed. and Thurs., and 10-2 Sat. Elk Valley Branch is open 11-7 Mon. and Thurs., 11-4 Tues., Wed., Fri., and 10-2 Sat. Patrons may enter the library to access materials and services. There is a limit of 4 patrons at a time in the Clendenin Branch and 8 patrons at a time at the Elk Valley Branch (based on local and state state distancing recommendations).. usic lives deep in the heart of the Elk River community. Our schools thrive with bright young students eager to show their talent. Our families gather around fiddle and dulcimer notes at annual reunions. Our community centers are filled with bluegrass and gospel music and our places of worship see many hearts rejoicing in the power of music. At the very center of our community is a musical force of nature, a river of rushing sound.

It’s no surprise that an Elk River community member found herself working as the development director for one of the state’s largest creators of live music, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Raised in Clendenin and now residing in Pinch, Jessica Westfall is a passionate advocate and fundraiser for the nonprofit orchestra. Her father and mother, Rick and Kathy Silber, ignited her love of music when she was a child. She participated in chorus,

REJOICING, cont. show choir, and theater throughout her years at Clendenin and Elkview Middle Schools and Herbert Hoover High School, where her mother serves as vocal director. Westfall continued her love of music in college as she sang for the jazz band at West Virginia State University. She now sings with the West Virginia Symphony Chorus and womanSong and considers her career with the Symphony to be a natural extension of her love of music.

and what the Symphony produces. I want everyone to experience that joy,” says Westfall. The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra provides educational programming at no cost to local students. Elk Center, Pinch, and Shoals Elementary Schools, Elkview Middle, and Herbert Hoover High School, among other county schools, all participate in the James & Ruth Kessler String Educators’ Program, which provides students lessons on a string instrument and complimentary concert passes for themselves and a guest for free, thanks to generous donors and through a partnership with Kanawha County Schools. Students also enjoy Young People’s Concerts offered across the state. This past year’s performance, titled “Symphonic Safari,” occurred in Charleston, Clarksburg, and Parkersburg, and brought the animal kingdom to life for children with the help of an on-stage cartoonist who drew pictures to accompany the live orchestra performance. “I love seeing the instantaneous reaction of the children during our Young People’s Concerts,” Westfall said. “For many children this is their first interaction with live orchestral music. They are overwhelmed and in awe of the stage, all the musicians, the maestro. When they recognize a piece, like this past year’s John Williams’ theme from “Jurassic Park,” they jump in their seats with excitement. They realize they are familiar with classical music. They hear it all the time, but seeing the orchestra play really brings it to life for them. As an adult, it’s enchanting to see that magic as they experience something profound. Their world opens up, maybe for the first time, and they see there is so much more.”

“We have some amazing sponsors who simply want to support live music for children. They use their sponsorship to bus in kids from the surrounding counties or southern West Virginia. Exposure is so important for so many of these children,” she said. One of the first challenges Westfall faced as development director for the orchestra was helping to protect and support sponsors, donors and patrons of the orchestra during the fast-

changing coronavirus pandemic. In preparing for and combating the coronavirus, the Symphony made the unprecedented move to postpone several concerts. “It was such a difficult decision, but we value the health and well-being of our patrons more than anything,” Westfall said. “There are going to be real financial impacts to music and arts organizations because of COVID-19. Now more than ever the Symphony needs the support of our community. While we are having to make tough decisions now, we are still looking to the future. Our community will have a future beyond this current healthcare crisis. We have an amazing lineup planned for the 2020-2021 season and invite our entire community to support and participate in the fun ahead.” This past season’s concerts included a concert featuring country singer LeAnn Rimes, a special concert bringing together civic and university

Concert sponsorships are vital in helping to keep concert tickets affordable and to help cover the high cost. We love our patrons, we work hard and value honesty, and we absolutely welcome everyone to our concerts and events. ELK’s COOKBOOK Marinated Vegetables Gabi Strickland Walker of Walker Mt. Eats/Facebook shared a delicious recipe for Marinated Vegetables, perfect as a side dish for any summer get-together. Gabi said the recipe was originally from Annette Jones of Clendenin, and it is amazing, especially with fresh garden veggies!

Here’s What You’ll Need Dressing:

½ C olive oil

Rough chop, bite-size pieces

½ C sugar

2 C each of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, baby tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet yellow and red peppers

½ C apple cider vinegar 1 pk Zesty Italian Salad Dressing (dry packet) 2 cloves of garlic, minced ½ t salt ½ t Italian Seasoning

DIRECTIONS Level: Easy

Dressing: In a container with a tight-fitting lid, shake to mix the first three ingredients and let it set for 10 minutes. Dressing: Add the additional ingredients and shake until combined. It is best if allowed to set overnight at room temperature. Pour dressing over the chopped veggies and marinate in the refrigerator overnight.

Elk River Trail Adds 12 New Miles ND THE U O

Mary Lynn Moore Shutlz, Bill Shultz, Doug Wayne and Dale Porter spent July 7 riding the full length of the two sections and on the J.G. Bradley Campground for a total of 46 miles. They are the first reported cyclists to ride round-trip between Duck and Dundon. They even stopped for a lunch of pepperoni rolls and rehydration at Nottingham’s Store in Duck.

The Elk River Trail is now open from Clay through Ivdale to Duck, a total of 22 miles one way! The new 12 mile section opened in late July.

Michael Mick posted that he went horseback riding on Rotten Robin on July 11 on the Trail. He said, “The trail is in excellent condition and the trail is mostly shaded and offered nice views of the river.”

Bob Saunders did a 20.9 mile bike ride on June 28. He pedaled round-trip from Duck to Ivydale and back. He is excited “it will be one of the longest rail trails in the state.”

Ken Tawney, president of Elk River Trail Foundation, Inc., also reported that the Foundation is closing on the purchase of a 2-acre parcel of land at the end of July. The land is located at the Dundon trailhead (across

the river from Clay), at the confluence of Buffalo Creek and Elk River. Mitch DeBoard, vice president of ERTF, said the Board is very excited about obtaining the property because

it is located at the interconnection of The Elk River Railroad, Inc. (the main trail along the river) and the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad (near where the 18-mile rails-withtrails section runs from Dundon to Widen). Ken said that the property, located near the midpoint of the main rail trail, will provide public access to both the rail trails and the river trail and many other opportunities for amenities at one of the major trailheads. John Hafer Thaxton

his month ERL is proud to recognize John Hafer Thaxton as our August Elk River Hero. He is an extraordinary family man, businessman, and leader in our Elk River community. John grew up on the Elk River beside Hafer Funeral Home. As a youth, he spent every day on the Elk River either fishing or swimming. Those are some of his happiest memories.

He and his wife, Tina Perry Thaxton, own Hafer Funeral Home and Myers Chapel in Elkview. He has been a licensed funeral director and embalmer in the funeral service for 31 years. John said, “A special memory that has stayed with me since I was 14 years old was being able to work at the funeral home with my grandfather, Ed Hafer, before he passed away. Then I was able to work with my grandmother, Mary J. Hafer, for 29 years, until her death in 2017.” He added, “It is a privilege to be able to help this community when they are in a time of need.” In addition to owning Hafer Funeral Home, John is also active in the Pinch Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD). He has been a member since June of 1989 and has had the honor of serving under three Fire Chiefs, each of them making the department what it is today. John said, “We were held to a high standard of training, education, and responsibility to do our best on every call.” John was appointed as Deputy Chief in January 2017, by Fire Chief David Wagoner. In January of this year, he was appointed by the Board of Directors as Fire Chief. “With the dedication and hard work by the current and past members of the PVFD, and the wonderful support of our community, we couldn’t be the fire department we are today, he said.

Special skills and training for John include multiple certificates in the Fire and Rescue Service at the Fire Chief level. He is also the former President of the WV Funeral Directors Association. He graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1989 , West Virginia State College in 1992, and Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1994.

John said, “It is an honor for the families of our community to choose our funeral home to take care of their loved ones. We understand we are assisting families during one of the toughest times in their lives.” The current COVID pandemic has restrictions at hospitals, nursing homes, hospice care, and

now funeral services. John said, â€œThe restrictions have made it harder on families for visitation, and we are continually adjusting to work with our families in order to help them meet their needs during this time.â€?

ELK REFLECTS Treasured Photos

im Johnson, Clendenin native, has always loved old photographs and genealogy. Over the years she has scanned old photos of Clendenin from her mom, grandmother, friends and family. One day she asked herself, “What in the world am I going to do with all of these photos?” Today we know that answer! She just published her first book: Clendenin, West Virginia--Images of the Past! Kim said, “There are 220 pages of Clendenin photos, from around 1895 to present.” Many of the photographs were from her mom and grandmother, plus from Clendenin locals including Henry Young, Sonny Matics, Leonard Shafer and Arlie Gallion. “Anytime someone had a photo, I would just scan it and store it, “ she added. Her new book is divided into sections: Early Days, Then and Now, Schools, Oil and Gas, Clendenin Carbide, Bygone Times, Foods, Churches and Mayors. It is a treasure trove of memories. Kim said, “So many people lost all of their photographs during The Flood of 2016, including the Clendenin Branch Library. This book is my way of giving back to our community so those memories aren’t lost forever.”

Kim Johnson was born and raised at the mouth of Bufflick in Clendenin at her grandparents house, Jim and Cleo Sweeney. When Interstate 79 came through Clendenin, they took her grandparents’ property and they relocated to Thorofare. She graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1970. Kim worked at Goldenseal Magazine at the Cultural Center in Charleston.

“It was the best job ever,” she said. “I loved being around all of the WV history and photographs. She retired from Goldenseal in 2018. Her book will be featured in their magazine this fall.

Excerpt from “What Lies in the Keys” (A Josh Baker and Eddie Debord Series, Book 4) Three crew members prepared the longboat and then went below decks with the rest of the mumbling, curious, and suspicious crew. The increased rum rations would cure all three. A single man readied a small box as ordered by the lieutenant. Captain d’Aire, saying nothing more, stepped from the bow and walked to his quarters at the stern. There, he opened his keyed safe, removed a small chest and lifted its lid. Inside were approximately twenty-five gold coins, a gold crucifix studded with rubies and emeralds, a solid gold incense burner from the Far East filled with black pearls from the north coast of South America, many necklaces of various decoration, and a message scribed on an oilcloth intended for Captain Pierre. This box was intended as a gift for a lady of nobility, but not anymore. The remaining three large, ornately decorated chests would remain behind locked doors in the Captain’s quarters--for the time being. They buried the waterproofed box, which contained the chest, three feet down and before leaving the small island, Captain d’Aire tossed three gold coins on top of the sand as a subtle marker. He then pulled his flintlock and fired one time, eliminating the only witness--an unworthy thief among his crew whom he had been wasting precious water and food on. He dragged the dead man away from the treasure site, for the crabs and vultures to enjoy, then rowed back to the ship. Onboard, the rum-soaked sailors didn’t know or care a crewman was missing.

Promoting Horsemanship on the Elk The Elk River Boots and Saddle Club (ERBSC), located at 70 Country Lane, in Elkview, is a Central WV horse club sponsoring open, allbreed shows, in the Elkview area. Since 1967 they have been committed to promoting horsemanship in the Elk River community, as well as to promoting the welfare of the horse in a family atmosphere. The Club has two upcoming Open Combined Shows, Contest Classes and Rail Classes, which will be held on Saturday, August 29 and Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 1 PM. The State guidelines are being followed for COVID-19.

There is a gate donation for admission. Entry fee is $5.00 for classes 10 and 11 in Open Division; Dash for Cash is $10.00, and all other classes are $5.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members. Appropriate dress is required. For class requirements, please refer to ERBSC 2017 Rules and Regulations. This summer the Club has had several community events. On Saturday, July 11, The Swivel Rockers from Madison, WV, performed from 7 to 11 PM. Attendees brought their own lawn chairs and blankets and maintained social distancing of 6 feet while enjoying an evening of 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s rock and roll music. Some attendees also remained in their vehicles or sat on their truck beds. It was a family friendly atmosphere that was fun for all ages.

cowboy hats and boots and listened to some great Country/Southern Rock by the Chris Allen Band. The Middle Ground Cafe offered refreshments for the family-friendly gathering which adhered to COVID social distancing guidelines.

Membership in the ERBSC is $30 for a family or $20 for a single. The ERBSC is a registered 501C3 non-profit organization.There are also six horse stalls which have been rebuilt since The Flood of 2016. Alice Hardman Blankenship has been President of ERBSC since 2017. She said, “Our Another event was held on August 1 on Club wants the support of the community so the ERBSC grounds. Locals donned their that we, in turn, can support the community.” She said the ERBSC is available for rent by organizations for community events. “The seven-acre grounds are wonderful for hiking, camping, building campfires, and even fishing in Blue Creek,” she said.
