T
he 2021 Pro Landscaper small project BIG IMPACT Awards have certainly highlighted the quality and creativity of the UK landscaping sector. Now in their fourth year, these awards have really grown, both in terms of the number of entries and the overall quality – 2021 being the highest number of entries we have had across all seven categories in any given year. Each of the categories have been highly competitive and to be shortlisted is no mean feat, so congratulations to all who have achieved this. This year, as with every other, the overall winners really had to excel and deliver across all aspects of the judging criteria. It is really pleasing that we are able to showcase these spectacular gardens. Well done to all the 2021 winners, and don’t forget to shout about your achievements and how fantastic professionally designed and built gardens are.

aia Gardeners used the derelict grounds of this 500-year-old cottage to exhibit its organic approach landscaping by creating a self-sustaining haven for nature. With Tony Brophy having been the landscape consultant for BAM Nuttall on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, as well as him and his son Danny, managing director of Gaia Gardeners, having become certified Master Organic Gardeners, they had plenty of expertise to pull from. Here, they crafted an edible garden, and a tranquil space to ‘feed the soul’. Water sustainability was at the core of the design, so a selection of ‘water thrifty’ plants and grass species were selected, alongside ‘Carbon Grass’ with 300% deeper roots enabling three times the carbon sequestration and increased root water holding capacity. Elsewhere, Euroflor’s Urban Meadow creates a stunning colour display as well as providing food and shelter for pollinating insects, birds and small mammals. The client has fully embraced his climatefriendly garden, particularly appreciating his invisible boundary hedge which opens the garden to the wider fields beyond.

owes Landscapes went above and beyond to deliver a family garden which could also be used for entertaining guests at this new build property. The clients wanted two dining areas, so Lowes created a space for the family to have breakfast and a morning coffee outside the bi-folding doors and another space in the corner for the garden for BBQs and al fresco dining later in the day. For this project, Lowes Landscapes challenged itself to install porcelain ‘floating steps’ for the first time, which was a great success, adding a sleek and modern look to the garden. Raised rendered beds and two pergolas were also constructed in what the company says is “one of its best builds yet”, despite having to overcome challenges such as digging everything out by hand and having to install more than 20t of soil to ensure the success of the planting. Lowes continues to visit the garden for regular maintenance.

his garden’s existing koi pond hadn’t been well considered, with liners and pumps visible and its scalloped pattern jarring against the rest of the garden. But it was important to the client that it remained so they could expand their koi collection. They also asked for the pond to become both a water feature, with the soothing sound of water in the background, and a stunning feature at night. Temporarily moving the existing koi to a pool, 1.2m was dug for the new pond and a sensitively designed chamber and hatch was integrated to house the pumps and filters. This was housed in an extension of the raised bed adjacent to the pond, its dark colour echoing the material palette of the house. Visible from the patio and all terrace levels, the black interior of the pond playfully shows off the iridescent colours of the fish while its high-quality filters keep the water crystal clear.

nspired by The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Adam Vetere transformed a forgotten area of a larger garden into a “sensory journey” for visitors, using a vibrant planting scheme which would provide yearround interest and would boost the site’s biodiversity. With different light and ground conditions to take into consideration, the plants needed to be carefully selected for success and for seasonal interest. The lower planting, for instance, features hellebores and ferns for the winter and primulas, camassias and foxgloves through spring. On top of the “complex tapestry of colour hues, forms and textures”, the garden also provides a home for insects and wildlife, with its minimal water requirements further boosting its sustainability. Judges noted it as a “truly transformational and inspired scheme. The decision to create the ravine removes the garden from its context – you wouldn’t have thought that this was in suburbia”. Judges also called it an “excellent project – right plants, right place”.

tarting with a blank canvas, Dawborn Gardens & Landscapes transformed this new build garden into a contemporary space suitable for all members of the family. The original sloped garden had poor drainage and a lack of privacy. Through hard work and using numerous skillsets, the team levelled the lawn and planted trees for screening, but faced numerous challenges along the way, from heavy rain to a heatwave to the ongoing materials shortage. Working around these as best it could, Dawborn Gardens & Landscapes created a multi-levelled garden, with a children’s play area, a space for al fresco dining and a “cosy” seating area around a firepit. Materials were chosen for their ease of maintenance, such as porcelain paving, which also gave the clients the modern look they required and a continued colour palette from indoors to outdoors. Judges described it as a “high quality scheme with high level of attention to detail” and “great value for money”.

nspired by Mondrian’s abstract geometric paintings, the clients of this cubeshaped garden are led by pathways and overhanging planting to a choice of five separate seating areas to enjoy at different parts of the day. A morning seat allows the clients to enjoy the sunrise, while a larger seating area is bathed in sunshine throughout the day; elsewhere two seating areas sit either side of a water feature. Located near the Brighton seafront, it was important that this garden was an intimate retreat for quiet interludes. The garden is designed to deliberately slow the client’s pace, as clouds of soft planting obscure the way and changes in direction create a meandering path. Four textures were chosen to zone the ground space, echoing Mondrian’s work – porcelain, clay pavers, gravel and Corten steel – while evergreen cover contrasts with pops of perennial colour throughout the year. Georgia Lindsay Garden Design certainly maximised this pocket garden, allowing it to be enjoyed from all angles and at all times of the day or night.

ondon-based design and build practice GRDN took on board the client’s considerations to create a space which fits a multitude of needs. Whilst working around other contractors, as the house was being renovated, GRDN turned the overgrown, untidy space into a green oasis. Minimal hard landscaping was complemented with an array of trees and shrubs, chosen and tagged with the client at the nursery whilst others were retained from the previous garden. The existing cedar studio at the end was used for the client’s therapeutic work, and so a clear path needed to be created for her private clients to access the garden room, which GRDN achieved with a smooth blend of concrete pavers and soft landscaping. Praised as an “excellent scheme” by judges, the garden also included a bespoke water feature which incorporated the client’s own sculptural stone piece to add more movement and sound. It was a “clear winner” for judges.

ABOUT
NW6 KEMPE ROAD | GRDN LANDSCAPE + GARDEN DESIGN
This project received the highest total score from the judges across all seven categories. GRDN is a truly well-deserved winner. This garden was extremely well designed, built with great attention to detail and accurately reflected the agreed design which more than matched the owner’s brief. The excellent choice in materials and soft landscaping delivered an eye-catching garden from the moment you walked in. One amazing quote from the client sums it up: “The garden is the focal point of our home and truly everything I had dreamed of.” Well done to the very talented GRDN Landscape + Garden Design team, the 2021 Pro Landscaper small project BIG IMPACT Supreme winner.
