ASSOCIATION NEWS NADRA opens hotel link for 2027 Summit in Cape Coral

APLD makes its case for certification In landscape design, creative vision and technical skill remain foundational. Yet in an increasingly competitive market, factors such as professionalism, credibility and client trust are also coming to the fore. Becoming an Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) Certified Landscape Designer is presented by the organization as more than a titular achievement. It is framed as a voluntary commitment to established standards, ethical conduct and continuing professional development.

The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) has opened the hotel reservation link for its 2027 Summit and 2026 National+ Deck Competition Awards Dinner. The event is scheduled for March 3–5, 2027, at The Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village in Cape Coral, Florida. The 17th National+ Deck Competition Awards Gala will take place on March 4. The ceremony will recognize outstanding achievements in deck construction and design across the residential and commercial sectors. NADRA has confirmed that additional dates are available at the resort for attendees considering an extended stay along the Southwest Florida coastline. Tickets for the Summit and Awards Dinner, along with sponsorship opportunities, will be announced in the coming months. The 2026 National+ Deck Competition is set to open soon, inviting deck builders / contractors and remodelers to submit their projects for national recognition. Prior to the Summit, NADRA will host the VIP Lounge at FutureScape USA | Santa Monica, taking place September 1–2 in California. Attendees are invited to join NADRA in the Lounge between 10am and 4pm on both days of the event to network with peers, meet association members and take part in the activity line-up throughout the show.

What APLD certification aims to provide Professional Credibility: The credential is intended to signal to clients, employers, and industry peers that a designer has met nationally recognized benchmarks. Client Assurance: For prospective clients, certification can serve as an indicator of verified experience and professional accountability, potentially easing the hiring decision. Industry Network: Certified designers gain access to a broader professional community focused on advancing landscape design practices. Ongoing Learning: Maintenance of the credential requires continuing education, which helps certified practitioners stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and methodologies. Market Positioning: Certification is positioned as a tool that may assist in attracting clients and projects aligned with a designer’s skill set. NALP offers landscape executives two distinct paths to leadership growth this winter Landscape and lawn care executives will have two opportunities to invest in high-level leadership education through the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) this winter. The NALP Executive Leadership Program at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, Jan. 11–14, 2027, offers an intensive classroom experience for executives and senior leaders. Participants will work through real business cases in a small cohort, engage directly with Darden faculty and examine issues such as leadership, organizational culture, financial decision-making and negotiation. A few weeks later, Leaders Forum will bring landscape and lawn care company owners and senior executives together Feb. 3–5, 2027, at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The event combines executive-level business intelligence with facilitated peer conversations, structured networking and time for relationships to develop beyond the meeting room. Although both programs serve leadership-level audiences, they are designed to meet different development needs. The Darden program focuses on strengthening the capabilities of the individual executive. With fewer than 25 participants, it provides an interactive business-school environment for leaders who influence company strategy, lead other leaders and make significant financial or operational decisions. Leaders Forum is built around the value of the executive peer community. Its 2027 program will address economic and business outlooks, regulatory intelligence, organizational effectiveness, executive decision-making and other issues that influence long-term company performance. A mix of attendees, facilitated conversations with leaders of similarly sized companies, a first-time attendee reception and structured networking will help participants identify and build relationships with peers most relevant to their businesses. ROBOTIC MOWER

Certified

T

he American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA) has awarded its Autonomous and Battery Field Testing Certification (AFTC) to the Sunseeker X7 Series robotic mowing platform. The certification, which covers the X7 Gen 1, X7 Gen 2 and X7 Plus Gen 2 models, concludes a series of extensive field evaluations conducted across multiple regions to assess the platform’s real-world performance, operational reliability and economic viability for commercial landscape maintenance. AGZA’s independent testing framework is designed to move beyond theoretical manufacturer specifications, focusing instead on verified workload outcomes for institutional and municipal end-users. As AGZA founder Dan Mabe says, the nature of robotic mowing demands a broader perspective than traditional equipment evaluation. “Robotic mowing is fundamentally different from handheld equipment or ride-on mowers. The success of a deployment depends as much on the entire system.” The 2,500-hour evaluations were carried out across a diverse range of operational settings, subjecting the autonomous mowers to varied turf types, complex terrain grades and demanding

Sunseeker’s X7 robotic mower platform secures AGZA certification following extensive real-world testing on commercial routes and college campuses

climate conditions. According to findings, the platform demonstrated an ability to mitigate labor shortages by handling repetitive mowing tasks, enabling crews to refocus on higher-value services. Initial deployments of the Gen 1 model encountered challenges with remote field Wi-Fi connectivity and application acclimation, but swift customer service responses and iterative software updates resolved these issues. Mabe says that many unsuccessful robotics deployments stem from factors unrelated to mechanical performance, citing “inadequate planning, improper installation, poor connectivity, insufficient maintenance or unrealistic user expectations” as common pitfalls. During AGZA’s field evaluation, Sunseeker demonstrated a commitment to supporting both its dealer network and end users. Moreover, data showed that newer models delivered notable quality-of-life improvements, such as robust 4G network stability and optimized satellite mapping.

David Goff, director of technical services at Sunseeker North America, says it aims to position itself as a key consideration for the industry’s evolving automation needs. “We want to bring the most current and relevant technology options that are driving robotics and automation.” Reflecting on the collaborative nature of the certification process, Mabe says the evaluation represented more than a simple product endorsement. “Throughout the evaluation, the Sunseeker management team, engineers, representatives, dealers and AGZA staff worked collaboratively to ensure that every aspect of the testing process was objective, transparent and uncompromised,” he comments. “This AFTC testing and field evaluation represents far more than the certification of a robotic mower. It reflects what can be accomplished when manufacturers and independent evaluators work together.”

Photography is more than a portfolio filler. Chris Major explains why great work deserves to be seen—and how trust starts with an image

I

n an industry where the final built environment is the product, photography is often relegated to a simple archival function—a “nice to have” that populates a portfolio but seldom does the heavy lifting it is capable of. This, according to CM Images founder Chris Major, is a fundamental misstep that leaves the majority of a landscape firm’s potential untapped. Moreover, as the visual landscape becomes increasingly saturated with AIgenerated content, he argues that the demand for authenticity—and the strategic use of that authenticity—is potentially lucrative. Major outlines why investing in professional imagery is less about creating a pretty picture and more about accelerating trust and demonstrating tangible value.

CM Images.indd 12

Booth 203

Beyond the “finished product” mentality One of the primary issues Major identifies is the industry’s narrow view of what constitutes a “valuable” image. While the final, manicured after-shot is essential, it is often where the marketing strategy begins and ends. This oversight, he maintains, neglects the rich narrative arc of a project. “Some companies will miss out on the work that’s being done during the build. That’s where we can start showing opportunity,” Major explains. He suggests that capturing the progression of a project—the “before, during and after”—is a crucial, yet commonly missed, opportunity. “We can then take those angles and tell a very interesting story of the property and the problem that’s being solved.” This narrative approach offers a dual benefit. For the client, it provides a clear, visual road map of the transformation, showcasing the complexity and value of the work being executed. For the wider public, it serves as an antidote to the proliferation of “AI-generated slop,” proving that the firm is a real entity capable of physical, tangible change. “Great work deserves to be seen,” Major states emphatically, “and that doesn’t necessarily mean a finished product. The great ongoing work deserves to be seen.”

BUSINESS

The ROI of visibility For many business owners, the return on investment (ROI) for professional photography remains unquantifiable. Unlike a skid steer or a truck, whose utility can be easily assessed, the impact of a photograph feels abstract. Major challenges this assumption. Using a sales funnel analogy, he proposes that a compelling image acts as a top-of-funnel attractor, grabbing the attention of a potential client. As they engage with the image and ask specific questions about elements within it, they move to the middle of the funnel. The real value appears during the sales close. “When we’re in that sales conversation and we start showing them and reminding them, ‘Here’s that image, here’s that fire pit we’re going to install,’ it’s reminding them that this is what’s going to happen,” Major says. He points out that this visual recall is an essential tool in client communication. “You get so much faster communication through images than you do with words, and the trust is higher.” He draws a parallel to a personal experience, recalling a time when clients called referencing specific photos from a portfolio. “They were putting themselves in that place psychologically. That’s what photos can do.”

Video and the “destination” company While photography forms the bedrock of a firm’s visual identity, the conversation broadens to include video and the selection of the right platforms. Major advises against a shotgun approach to social media, recommending that firms focus on a platform where they can be consistent. He highlights Instagram as a natural fit for visual storytelling but suggests an often-overlooked platform for deeper engagement: YouTube. “We have to stop thinking about YouTube as a video platform, but more as a search engine,” he states. “If somebody is looking for how to do something, or about a certain type of thing, and you’re a landscaper that specializes in water features, that might be a great opportunity.” A longer, well-produced YouTube video can be broken down into clips for other social channels, maximizing the use of the content. Nevertheless, the core message extends beyond simply attracting more clients. Major points out that many contractors he speaks with are not necessarily looking for more leads; they are struggling to find quality staff to handle the work they already have. Here, the visual strategy takes on a new purpose: recruitment. “If you want to become that destination company, you’ve got to really start thinking about how we can really immerse our audience into the world that we want them to see,” he says. This involves showcasing not just the project, but the team culture.

Roots and canopies Addressing the fear many business owners have of over-expanding, Major offers a botanical analogy to reframe the notion of growth. “Businesses are just like plants,” he observes. “They have three options: they can grow, they can go dormant or they can die.” In his analogy, he distinguishes between “outward growth”— becoming a larger, more top-heavy organization that risks falling over in a storm—and the vital inward “root growth” of a stable company. Both forms of growth are essential to balance, Major argues, in growing the profitability of the company, whilst also building “a bigger picture that helps the team become prouder of the company and elevating the professionalism of the business.”

THE FEE

Blindspot

Not all financing is created equal. The right option leaves more of a homeowner’s budget available for the project itself or builders, financing is more than a way to help homeowners pay for a project. It’s a sales tool that can influence project size, customer confidence and whether a sale moves forward. While interest rates often receive the most attention, financing fees can quietly reduce a homeowner’s purchasing power before construction begins. Builders who understand the full cost of financing can guide customers toward options that protect project value, create upgrade opportunities and improve close rates. The earlier financing enters the sales conversation, the easier it is to help customers compare options before hidden costs shape project decisions.

When more of a homeowner’s budget goes toward financing costs, less remains for the project. Instead of adding a spa, outdoor kitchen, upgraded decking or premium finishes, customers often scale back or postpone their plans. “For every dollar spent on financing fees, you can subtract one dollar from the backyard budget,” says Jessie Wood, senior business development manager at Lyon Financial. Those costs add up quickly. Closing costs for home equity products, including HELOCs, can total up to 5% of the loan amount, depending on the lender and borrower. “On a $100k project, a 5% borrower fee is $5k,” Wood says. “Would you rather see that $5k added to the project or paid in financing fees?”

The hidden cost of financing fees When homeowners research financing on their own, they often encounter loans with borrower fees or structures that aren’t designed for pool and outdoor living projects. Without guidance, they may assume those costs are unavoidable, reducing the scope of the project or abandoning it before finding a better option.

How to take control of the financing conversation Builders don’t need to become financing experts, but they shouldn’t leave financing to chance. By recommending a trusted financing partner and encouraging customers to ask the right questions, they can protect both the customer’s experience and the sale.

Questions to ask before recommending financing • Borrower fees: What will my customers pay? • Repayment terms: How do they affect monthly payments? • Industry expertise: Is the loan designed for outdoor living projects? • Transparency: Are all fees and costs clearly explained upfront? “The wrong financing solution competes with the project for the homeowner’s budget,” Wood says. “The right solution keeps more of those dollars invested in the project. Builders need to understand what financing really costs their customers. If they don’t, it could end up costing them the sale.”

BATTERY TRANSITION ECONOMICS

T

Why ROI calculations now include charging infrastructure, insurance rates and technician training costs

he landscaping industry is facing immense pressure to ditch gas-powered equipment. However, transitioning a commercial fleet requires evaluating far more than the sticker price of a mower. Here is a breakdown of landscape battery transition economics and why calculating the ROI for battery equipment. The drivers of landscape fleet transition How firms handle landscape battery fleet transition costs depends in part on why they are making the move. Some landscaping companies are increasingly turning to battery-powered equipment, in part by noise complaints from residential neighborhoods governed by local ordinances or homeowners’ association rules. Other firms are making the transition not in response to existing grievances, but in anticipation of potential future regulations

16

restricting gas-powered machinery. For business owners concerned about the significant initial expenditure, industry observers suggest beginning with handheld units. This incremental approach limits operational disruption while allowing firms to evaluate performance and costs over a single season. After two years without expenditures on gasoline, motor oil, spark plugs, air filters or routine engine repairs, the accumulated savings can become substantial. Furthermore, reduced maintenance demands and quieter operations can contribute to improved workplace conditions and community relations. Regional variations impact the transition ROI varies dramatically depending on where you operate. Your location determines both regulatory timelines and the infrastructure investments required to keep batteries performing safely. For example:

● California regulatory pressure: The state has phased in AB 1346, setting zero-emission standards for outdoor equipment. This accelerates transition timelines, whether operators feel ready or not. ● Cold climate challenges in Minnesota: Freezing temperatures degrade lithiumion battery performance and charging efficiency. Operators need heated storage facilities and cold-weather charging protocols that add infrastructure costs. ● Heat management in Arizona: Extreme temperatures pose thermal runaway risks requiring additional safety infrastructure and climate-controlled storage to prevent battery fires. ROI calculations must reflect your actual operating environment, because the same equipment investment may require much more supporting infrastructure depending on where you work.

BUSINESS Decoding infrastructure cost Infrastructure is where budgets typically inflate. Understanding commercial landscape charging infrastructure cost starts with recognizing that a fleet needs more than wall outlets. Depot charging requires: ● Electrical panel upgrades: Existing service capacity often cannot handle simultaneous charging. ● Dedicated circuits: Each charging station needs appropriate amperage. ● Complete service increase: Multiple units charging at once can exceed your facility’s electrical capacity. Mobile charging involves trailer-mounted systems that bring power to jobsites but come with their own capital costs and logistics. A crew transitioning just five mowers plus handhelds may need tens of thousands in charging setup costs before deploying the first unit. This infrastructure investment is a one-time expense, but it changes your payback timeline. Miss it in your initial calculation, and you are looking at a break-even point years longer than planned. Budgeting for lithium battery technician certification Battery management systems require diagnostic training beyond traditional mechanical repair. Lithium battery technician certification in landscaping has become essential for safely handling high-voltage equipment and avoiding warranty voids. Industry-recognized batteryelectric equipment training costs around $359 per

“THE REAL LEGACY WILL BE THE CONVERSATIONS WE’RE HAVING NOW. PEOPLE ARE PAYING ATTENTION” Melanie Buffa on why landscape architecture’s most meaningful work happens at the intersection of vision and the realities of construction

T

he most consequential landscape architecture is rarely born of concept alone. It emerges at the messy, challenging intersection of vision and practicality—a place where Melanie Buffa has chosen to build her career. Newly appointed landscape director at Agency Artifact and current president of the ASLA Southern California Chapter, Buffa’s professional philosophy has been shaped not by theory but by experience: the grit of construction sites, the precision of nurseries and the often-frustrating ambitions of urban planning. Here, Buffa offers a glimpse into the challenges facing Los Angeles in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympics, the evolving identity of the landscape

architect and the critical importance of building knowledge from the ground up. At a time when the profession is increasingly dominated by high-tech visualization, Buffa remains a steadfast advocate for the tactile realities of construction, arguing that a design is only as good as its ability to be built. The Festival Trail and LA28 Among the high-profile initiatives that have defined Buffa’s tenure at Agency Artifact, one of the most ambitious is the Festival Trail—a project that has since grown into an independent non-profit. Conceived as a lasting legacy for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, the Trail envisions a network of pedestrian and cycling routes connecting the city’s disparate green spaces. Yet for all its ambition, the project’s path to realization has been fraught with difficulty, Buffa acknowledges. “Engaging LA28 on legacy issues has proved

challenging,” she explains. “Their focus is very much on execution.” That became clear recently when a joint Request for Proposal (RFP) between the LA 2028 committee and the city on mobility and wayfinding was abruptly cancelled. “We’ve encountered some bureaucratic resistance along the way.” The RFP cancellation serves as a microcosm of a broader tension that defines mega-events. Host cities frequently pitch the Olympics through the language of transformation and rejuvenation, however, the organizing bodies tasked with delivery are often predominantly focused on the immediate staging challenges. Legacy, in this framework, becomes secondary—something to be addressed once the athletes have departed and the television crews have packed up. For landscape architects and urban planners who see these events as rare opportunities to secure funding and political will

recognized that though I really love the design process, I didn’t know how anything was built,” she admits. This realization sent her on a path: she immersed herself in the nursery industry to understand plant material sourcing and then moves to a design-build firm to learn the mechanics of construction. “For me, that’s the most important aspect of being a landscape architect—knowing how all of these things combine,” she says. “We are sort of like the glue. It’s the grading, the drainage, the placement of the building. Not one thing is just one system; it’s all one system coming together.” This holistic view is increasingly crucial as budgets shrink and timelines compress. Buffa argues that practical knowledge of “lead times” and material availability is not a secondary skill but a primary tool for client relations. “We need to bridge the gap between construction and landscape architecture,” she says. “That’s how we actually deliver great designs for our clients.” for infrastructure initiatives, this disconnect is understandably frustrating. Nevertheless, the setback has not signaled an end to the Trail. Buffa notes the concept has gained traction in local communities and among council members, who are using the momentum to push for smaller, tangible wins—such as completing gaps in the LA River Bike Path. “Funding bureaucracy, the unwillingness of LA28 to take up certain initiatives that have already started, is a difficult process. But it’s not a complete dead end.”

Forged in the field For Buffa, the challenges of the Olympic legacy are a case study example of the foundational challenges facing landscape architects daily: the gap between a compelling vision and the gritty reality of implementation. Her career trajectory is a testament to a deliberate effort to bridge that divide. Early in her professional life, Buffa identified a shortcoming in her own knowledge about the industry and sought to rectify it proactively. “I

ASLA SoCal: Building bridges Buffa’s mission to bridge gaps extends beyond the construction site to the profession itself. As president of the ASLA Southern California Chapter (ASLA SoCal), she has focused on fostering connections—between the industry and the public, between students and professionals and between landscape architecture and allied trades. “It was definitely interesting. It came to me rather than I volunteered,” she says of her path to

BUSINESS contractor for a really long time just to understand how things move in the field because that’s its own separate thing.” This focus on mentorship and career guidance is a central pillar of her presidency. She encourages emerging professionals to understand that the traditional trajectory—working up to opening a private firm—is not the only path.

Additionally, for the student sketch walk, organizers have chosen to move beyond the convention center’s immediate vicinity, sending groups on different Metro lines to explore the city’s diverse environs. “Downtown has its own charm, but we have other great things around the city to see,” Buffa says. This decision reflects a conscious effort to “We always start with a showcase the diversity of story—we research the Los Angeles’ landscapes, context, we understand not solely the version the client, we get to centered around tourism. know the user”

the presidency. “But I think that it was good for me to learn how to step up into a leadership role.” Her approach to leadership is characteristically inclusive. “My biggest thing wherever I am— not just as president of ASLA, but also in my workplaces and just in life—I always want to look back and see who’s struggling and see how I can help.” Evaluating the industry from a position of leadership, she expresses concern that academic programs are increasingly prioritizing “sexy” topics like AI and visualization while neglecting the fundamentals of construction. “We are all taught big concept designs, and we don’t teach enough of the smaller construction,” she laments. “At the end of the day, that means nothing if you can’t actually build what you’re selling to the client.” This critique is not born of academic conservatism but from her underlining of a practical recognition that the profession’s credibility depends on its ability to deliver. Clients who commission designs that prove impossible to construct, or that require expensive and timeconsuming revisions during the build phase, are unlikely to engage landscape architects again. The long-term health of the profession, Buffa suggests, depends on a renewed emphasis on buildability. Consequently, her advice to student members of ASLA is pragmatic and bold: go work for a contractor. “If you have an opportunity to do it, absolutely, because you learn so much just from being on site,” she says. “I wanted to work for a

LA on the national stage With the ASLA National Conference set to arrive in Los Angeles, September 16-18, Buffa currently is at the center of efforts to showcase the region’s unique landscape heritage. In particular, she expresses excitement about the show’s “field sessions”—behind-the-scenes tours that sold out rapidly. “We have about 23 field sessions—at Disneyland, at certain movie studios, the Huntington Garden,” she lists. “Participants will get to see a very zoomed-in lens of various sites from the specific view of landscape architecture.” These tours offer conference attendees something that PowerPoint presentations and panel discussions cannot completely capture: an embodied experience of the landscapes that define Southern California.

Golden State trends When discussing the current trajectory of landscape architecture in Southern California, Buffa highlights the integration of “green infrastructure” and water capture. “There’s a lot of conversation around using landscapes for water capture specifically,” she says. “We get so little rain here and ensuring that water returns to the environment cleaner is something the technology is increasingly enabling. Ten years ago, this was still a novel approach. Now we have all these different systems—biofiltration and beyond—that make it far more reliable.” Other than water, she also emphasizes a growing focus on sourcing sustainable and ethical

The timeline is tight and bureaucracy moves slowly. A lot of these contracts probably won’t be finalized before 2028. But the real legacy, I think, will be the conversations we’re having now. People are paying attention. There will be more initiatives born from this momentum.” For those looking to find their own voice in the industry, Buffa’s advice is one of empowerment. “Find what you’re passionate about and become the expert. Be the smartest person in the room.” She urges young professionals to push their research beyond the classroom and “take it to your local government. If you want to be heard, back yourself up with real research. I see too many students complete ambitious projects and let them gather dust. Keep going. Take it to the community it affects. Make yourself the expert.” This commitment to holistic, grounded and inclusive design defines Buffa’s career. In a profession increasingly seduced by digital dazzle, Buffa’s insistence on the fundamentals—on knowing how things are built and the user it serves—is a necessary reminder that landscape architecture’s ultimate purpose is not only to impress but to create a lasting legacy for people to enjoy.

he pavilion, the firepit, the sprawling paver deck—these are the subtly illuminated elements that catch the eye in Stone Ridge Outdoor Experiences’ Windham project. What does not immediately register from the images, however, is what lies beyond the black aluminum fence: a protected wetlands area that dictated key decisions the build and design teams made. Hence, the challenge of the project for Stone Ridge was not merely to construct an inviting and spectacular entertaining space for a young family, but to do so without disturbing the sensitive environments at the property’s edge. For the socially active homeowners, the backyard of their Windham, New Hampshire property represented significant untapped potential. They reportedly love to entertain and sought to transform the space into a summerlong destination for gatherings, accommodating everything from quiet family evenings to large celebrations with extended relatives. Stone Ridge Outdoor Experiences was brought in to execute this vision, delivering an outdoor living space that prioritizes both functionality and aesthetics.

The centerpiece of the design is a custom gunite swimming pool. Chosen for its durability and versatility, the pool is equipped with an automatic safety cover, a crucial feature for a household of five children that provides peace of mind without detracting from the pool’s visual appeal. Surrounding the pool is an expansive paver deck, designed to offer ample room for both lounging and active play. A cohesive design philosophy links the pool deck to a custom pavilion and fully equipped outdoor kitchen, transforming these structures into a natural dining and entertainment hub that extends the home’s living space outdoors. When daylight fades, the entertainment area shifts to a sitting wall with a built-in firepit, which provides warmth and a focal point for evening gatherings. Complementing that glow, low-voltage lighting, a discreet audio system and an aluminum fence deliver safety and ambiance without compromising the open, elegant atmosphere. The softscape features were selected with a focus on low-maintenance living. Overall, the goal being to allow the family to spend more time enjoying the space rather than maintaining it. Consequently, plant choices were made to create privacy in key areas while also being resilient against deer and harsh winter winds that tend to pass between the two homes. The final softscape incorporated several varieties of ornamental grasses and carpet junipers, which provide yearround texture and visual appeal without demanding constant care. Nonetheless, Stone Ridge says the project faced early challenges. First, expanding the backyard’s usable footprint required trucking in structural fill and compacting it in lifts. Compounding this, the property borders a protected wetland, demanding careful environmental compliance. To address this, the team reoriented the pool, reduced its width and regraded the site—using a riprap-stabilized embankment instead of a substantial retaining wall—to push finished grades to the wetland buffer’s edge. This accommodated the client’s needs while remaining sensitive to environmental limitations. Adding to the complexity was the site access, which proved difficult throughout construction. To avoid logistical bottlenecks, the team had to alter the sequence of installation. The solution was to have the nursery deliver only the plants needed for the back areas and install the plantings, drip irrigation and lighting for those zones before the bulk of the construction equipment was on-site. What Stone Ridge delivered in Windham is, at its heart, a space that invites connection—between people, between indoor and outdoor living, and between built form and natural boundary. The wetlands remain untouched. The entertainers have their stage. And the craftsmanship speaks for itself. or six years, the overgrown planting beds and uneven pea-gravel walkways of this Washington backyard were more of an obstacle course than an inviting living space. Weeds demanded constant attention, pathways proved impractical for a young family and the layout offered little room for the recreation and relaxation the homeowners wanted. Consequently, the brief given to System Pavers was clear: significantly reduce upkeep while creating a contemporary, functional space where the family— including their son and dog—could comfortably gather and play. The System Pavers team report that they first approached the project by designing a series of flexible “outdoor rooms” intended to

balance practical needs with visual cohesion. The scope included large-format pavers for a clean contemporary aesthetic, custom walkways, upgraded landings and transitional spaces, and a built-in seating wall surrounding a modern fire feature. Lush anti-microbial synthetic turf ensures a highly functional yard that reduces maintenance while standing up to daily use. Furthermore, the designers incorporated built-in lighting instead of traditional path lights, further eliminating obstacles while Previous page: A modern rectangular fire pit creates a natural gathering space Current page left to right: Artful paver design upgrades the look of this path and patio; A low wall provides built-in fire pit seating

PORTFOLIO elevating the overall design and supporting safe nighttime use of the open play areas. Likewise, other small but intentional details, such as changing paver direction and edging patterns, created visual distinction throughout the property. System Pavers states that one of the primary challenges of the project was transforming an overgrown, maintenance-heavy backyard into a clean, modern outdoor living space without losing the warmth and character of the property. The design team addressed this by creating

intentional zones throughout the yard, using careful transitions in paver orientation to define spaces without excessive structures or barriers. The existing staircase, while structurally sound, lacked functionality and visual integration; rather than replacing it entirely, the team engineered a new landing pad that improved circulation and created a polished architectural transition. Additionally, the area under the deck, previously underutilized, was maximized with a paver patio where the homeowners can relax in hanging chairs or enjoy games, protected from the elements.

Regional weather considerations also informed material selection, with a built-in seating wall recommended over movable furnishings to provide durability and year-round usability in the Pacific Northwest climate. Completed through a highly collaborative design-build process, System Pavers reflected that the project delivered a sophisticated, family-friendly outdoor environment with lasting functionality. The homeowners, who were highly engaged throughout the process, reportedly described the space as both transformative and perfectly aligned with their long-term lifestyle goals. What was once a disconnected landscape has become a modern cross-generational and multipurpose space designed for recreation, entertaining and relaxation. erritt College’s Landscape Horticulture program in California had long attracted a diverse student body, but its facilities could not keep up with its popularity. Enrollment caps became a necessity in recent years—not because of waning interest, but because of inadequate space and funding. The task of

reimagining the campus fell to BASE Landscape Architecture, which collaborated closely with Noll & Tam Architects, students and faculty to create a design intended to serve as a living classroom for generations to come. The infrastructure failures were a daily reality for instructors. Laboratory space for large drafting tables and modern technology was inadequate.

Classrooms were cramped and poorly lit, equipped with outdated technology, while the disjointed layout offered no smooth transition between indoor lessons and outdoor practical work. Natural light, vital for horticulture education, was scarce, and outdoor teaching areas lacked the shading and weather protection needed for year-round use. Accordingly, the BASE team’s design for the

The team says that circulation has been completely overhauled to improve fire access, delivery, parking and accessibility. New pathways paved in concrete, pavers or stabilized decomposed granite now connect courtyards, demonstration gardens and teaching areas via accessible routes. Likewise,

accessible garden beds feature throughout, and expanded parking uses Grasscrete stalls planted with fescue to allow stormwater infiltration. Creating common spaces for students and faculty to interact, mentor, socialize and prepare for classes was a central focus of the design. Class labs, the library and a portion of the greenhouses are arranged around a central courtyard—the

heart of the campus—each designed with strong indoor-outdoor connections to the courtyard and dedicated outdoor classroom space. A new lighting system, comprehensive signage, small tool storage integrated into custom benches and smaller gathering areas interspersed throughout complete the transformation. PORTFOLIO medicinal herbs, native planting, firescape, xeriscape, pollinator habitat and bioretention planting have also been integrated. The project was not without its challenges, however. Limited survey information for existing trees led to a redesign of bioretention areas during construction to protect mature specimens— including Aesculus californica, pine trees and Quercus agrifolia, the latter used in the curriculum for training arboriculture students in tree climbing. The bioretention was pulled outside the drip lines of these trees to limit disturbance and give them the best chance of survival. Furthermore, heavy clay soils required additional drainage systems and perforated pipes filled with aggregate in all tree pits to ensure free drainage. Three mature Japanese maple trees, focal points of the original courtyard, were also carefully removed, planted temporarily in large custom boxes for the duration of construction and then reinstalled in their final locations once the sites were prepared. While the project did not pursue formal sustainability certification, BASE reports that sustainable principles guided the design at every turn. Low water-use plants form the backbone of the planting scheme, meeting California’s stringent Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance. Thermally modified ash from sustainably managed forests replaced tropical hardwoods in benches, storage units and trellises. A small-scale rainwater capture system demonstrates blue-green infrastructure, and wherever feasible, existing features constructed by students and faculty were retained and repurposed. Now the transformation is complete, the Landscape Horticulture program occupies a campus equipped for contemporary teaching practices and future growth. The design delivers accessible, functional spaces that support both instruction and community, fulfilling the brief to create a living classroom for the program’s student body. Finance labour strategically Scaling up for the busy season requires a different approach than buying equipment. Saunders advises that “payroll needs a working capital facility rather than an equipment loan. Availability should grow with signed jobs, deposits and demonstrated production capacity. Otherwise, the lender is financing hiring against a forecast.” In other words, lenders should base decisions on confirmed work, not projected growth. Mawri adds “financing products specifically designed for labor costs can help landscapers hire and train new team members before the busy season begins.” Landscapers should look for working capital facilities that expand with confirmed workload, rather than fixed loans. What do landscapers really need? Saunders concludes: “Landscapers do not need a generic small-business loan with different branding. They need financing that understands backlog, seasonality, equipment uptime, payroll timing and job-level cash flow.” The future of landscaping finance lies not in repackaged products, but in genuine understanding.

TABLETOP GRILLING

FESTÁVOLO founder Nils Dethloff on bringing his Korean barbecue-inspired grill tables to the US, targeting landscape designers and redefining outdoor dining

A

European manufacturer of integrated grill tables, FESTÁVOLO is set to make its North American debut at the upcoming FutureScape USA, Santa Monica event. The company, founded by Nils Dethloff, is entering the American market with a product range that aims to create a new niche by combining the functionality of a high-performance gas grill with the aesthetics of a garden table. A new approach to outdoor cooking The core concept for FESTÁVOLO was sparked by Dethloff’s appreciation for Korean barbecue— where food is cooked directly at the table on integrated gas or charcoal grills—and his desire to replicate that social dining experience in a garden setting. Yet despite his enthusiasm for the idea,

38

he found that existing products on the market fell short of his expectations, lacking both the power and the aesthetic design he envisioned. “It’s a beautiful garden table and it’s a powerful, flexible gas grill,” Dethloff says, distilling the product’s unique appeal. In his view, the combination creates an entirely new category, one that competes with neither standalone grills nor conventional furniture companies. The name itself reflects this hybrid identity: a portmanteau of the Italian words “festa” (feast/party) and “tavolo” (table). The design philosophy centers on enhancing social interaction. By cooking at the table, hosts are not constantly moving between a separate grill and their guests. “You strengthen and improve the conversation,” Dethloff comments. “It never gets boring because you always help each other. You must hand something over, you discuss your food.

Booth 227

Nobody has to cook for somebody else—everyone still cooks as much and how they like it, and you have fresh food right in front of you.” Moreover, he also highlights practical benefits, such as eliminating cold food and reducing waste by allowing guests to cook smaller portions as they go. Product range and distribution partners FESTÁVOLO’s tables are available in two color finishes and three sizes, seating between four and ten people. The units arrive almost fully assembled—only eight bolts are required to attach the legs, a process Dethloff says takes around ten minutes. A range of matching accessories, including side tables, planter boxes and chairs, is also available to create a cohesive outdoor aesthetic. “We do intend to expand these furniture side products,” Dethloff says, pointing to future

With FESTÁVOLO, he believes these professionals can offer clients something truly unexpected—a “wow effect” that sets their work apart. To support this partnership, the company has established a commission and discount system for designers on sales generated through their projects. As FESTÁVOLO prepares to exhibit at FutureScape USA, Dethloff’s immediate priority is forging connections with the designers and architects who can introduce his vision to American backyards. If the “wow effect” he promises proves as compelling stateside as it has in Europe, the brand may well succeed in redefining the outdoor dining experience. *some images within this article may contain AI-generated content

rillnetics is set to debut an innovative product line that could change how contractors and homeowners approach outdoor kitchen design, at the upcoming FutureScape USA, Santa Monica event, September 1-2. The managing member of Grillnetics, Andrew Mill, recently sat down with Pro Landscaper USA to discuss the company’s latest developments, its unique product’s value position and the evolution of the outdoor living market. Since its founding in 2017, Grillnetics has set out to redefine luxury outdoor kitchen design and development. What began with a handful of innovative BBQ enthusiasts has grown into a business capable of designing and delivering custom outdoor kitchens for spaces of any size, using any combination of grill and outdoor kitchen components. The centerpiece of Grillnetics’ upcoming

showcase at FutureScape USA, Santa Monica is its launch of 100% aluminum wood-grain planked finish kitchen cabinets. “It’s a tongue-and-groove system,” Mill explains. “A few companies in the US and Canada refer to it as sublimation—essentially, they transfer a wood-grain look onto aluminum. With our new line, we’re offering a fully aluminum cabinet with that finish. It’s a sharp look, and no one else in the market is offering it.” Reflecting the diverse climates and local environments across the country, the choice of aluminum is deliberate. “Aluminum offers saltwater resistance,” Mill states. “There’s no corrosion, no rust. That’s why we use more high-quality

materials—because it will hold up long-term, and it’s 100% recyclable at the end of its life cycle. Aluminum is a fantastic product. It has strength— that’s why jets are made out of it.” A system built on adjustability As a whole, what sets Grillnetics apart is its modular system’s adaptability. Mill identifies this as

That’s why all our different cabinets—from grill cabinets to front-load cabinets—are built in three-inch increments. We allow people to customize a kitchen to fit their area. We offer some out-of-the-box options, but most of what we do is custom. For instance, we can get our cabinets to wrap around posts, and we can do a lot of different things to make them work on a variety of patios.”

Serving diverse customer bases Grillnetics balances support for both DIYers and professional contractors. “We have a design staff, so we can provide renderings,” Mill explains. Additionally, the company is developing a proprietary digital design tool that is currently in beta testing. This new software will offer enhanced functionality for customers. “If you want a kitchen that’s 10 feet three inches long in an L-shape with a bar on this side, you can design that yourself,” he says. “The tool identifies which cabinets are needed, allows you to shop for and compare different appliance brands, and gives you a bill of materials with a cost at the bottom.” For consumers, this streamlines the purchasing process. “It allows them to buy now, finance it and put it on payments,” Mill notes. On the other hand, for contractors, the system provides additional value. “If a contractor signs up, we can apply discounts so they can mark their products up. If the consumer checks, they’re seeing the same price whether they buy directly from me or through the contractor—but we put a margin in there for the contractor.” The next phase will integrate all available finishes into the tool, allowing users to select wood style, color and countertops. “You should end up with a rendering, a bill sheet with costs and a picture of what your kitchen is going to look like,” Mill says. “You can run it up to your partner and say, ‘Look what we’re going to get.’” Looking ahead Overall, Mill makes his commitment clear: “I refuse to send out inferior products. I do this out of passion and love for the industry.” At Grillnetics, that dedication to quality underpins everything— innovation, service and craftsmanship. As the outdoor living market continues to evolve, the company’s new all-aluminum wood-grain product line and design technology position it to serve both professional contractors and homeowners seeking long-lasting, customized outdoor kitchens.

FIRE Ready

From smart sprinklers to intumescent vents to class A fire rated new builds, Coldwater Construction reveals the products helping California homeowners harden their homes against wildfires

I

n the wake of California’s increasingly destructive wildfire seasons, home hardening has evolved from a prudent precaution into a home insurance necessity. Jack Klines—CEO and founder of Coldwater Construction—and his co-owner and chief constructionofficer, Edgar Gonzalez, report record demand for comprehensive wildfire defense systems. Below, the partners break down their company’s fire-hardening strategies that are now reshaping how homes are built and protected. Intumescent fire-rated vents Proper venting is essential for a home, but standard vents can allow embers to enter attics and crawl spaces. Coldwater addresses this with the Vulcan vent system, which features a multi-layer design including a fine mesh sheet and a honeycomb core coated with an intumescent material. The vent is designed to shut. “When exposed to radiant heat, the intumescent coating makes the honeycomb expand and close up,” Gonzalez explains. “Nothing can get into your crawl space or your attics.”

Smart roof-line sprinkler system Coldwater’s primary active defense system is a smart, copper-based sprinkler installed along the roofline, designed to activate before a fire front arrives. The system includes advanced sensors that autotrigger the system and check valves that monitor city main water pressure; if pressure drops, it automatically switches to a backup source such as a swimming pool or a cistern water tank. Beyond soaking the roof and the surrounding foliage, the system creates a water curtain. “It changes the local ecosystem,” says Klines. “The local humidity around your home is significantly increased, creating a microclimate that traps embers and particulate matter.” The spray can extend 30 feet or more from the roof edge.

Steel gutter guards and fire-retardant spray To complement the major structural retrofits, Coldwater offers additional services to eliminate secondary ignition sources. Steel gutter guards prevent the buildup of leaves and debris in gutters. “If an ember lands in your gutter, and there’s debris in there, it’s just adding fuel to the fire,” Klines warns. The firm has also partnered with Komodo Fire Retardant—a connection forged at the 2025 FutureScape USA trade show—to offer their plantbased, non-toxic spray. Though typically used for large-scale defensible space, the product now serves as another key tool in Coldwater’s expanding fire-safety arsenal.

44

Coldwater Roofing.indd 44

Enclosed eaves system Standard homes often have exposed wood in their eaves, creating a pocket where radiant heat and embers can accumulate and ignite. Coldwater encloses these eaves using a two-layer fire-resistant system comprising gypsum board and HardieBacker cement board or a stucco finish—whichever matches the aesthetics of the home, eliminating exposed flammable materials. Klines notes this system combats wildfire in two ways: “against radiant heat and windborne embers,” ensuring that even if embers are blown into the area, there is no combustible material to catch fire.

MOTORIZED OUTDOOR LIVING

As temperatures soar and outdoor living booms, motorized screens and awnings are extending seasons, enhancing privacy and adding service offering value

he demand for outdoor living spaces has seen a significant surge, a trend driven by a cultural shift accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Tim Froning, director of business development at SunPro Motorized Awnings and Screens, the appeal is multifaceted. “People are now realizing they can get protection from insects and other pests with a motorized screen,” he comments. In climates like his home base of Phoenix, Arizona, this technology also provides crucial solar protection, allowing homeowners to “extend the time they can spend outdoors, even when temperatures reach 100 or 114 degrees.” This desire for extended seasonal use and enhanced comfort has transformed backyards into primary living areas. The trend has also encouraged collaboration across industries. Precast pools are reshaping residential construction. Soake Pools co-founder details why contractors and homeowners are taking notice

recast concrete pools have progressively been moving into the mainstream of residential pool construction. Soake Pools’ co-founder Karen Larson discusses the factors behind their growing popularity. Outlining the benefits for landscape contractors, Larson says that precast pools offer specific operational advantages. “When a landscaper uses a precast pool, they gain project control,” Larson states. “They can, therefore, save both time and money.” Unlike traditional gunite installations, where contractors find themselves at the mercy of pool builder schedules, precast allows landscape professionals to manage timelines and incorporate pool installation into their project workflow. “That’s more money in their pocket, and they control even more of the finishes in and around the pool,” she adds. Likewise, she says that homeowners reportedly benefit from cost savings and reduced disruption. According to Larson, most US markets see savings of “thousands of dollars” compared to comparable gunite pools. Moreover, the construction timeline shortens “by anywhere from six weeks to six

any hardscape professionals view artificial grass installation not as a departure from their core work but as an extension of it—one that aligns with shifting homeowner expectations and regional water-use patterns. Across residential, commercial and recreational sectors, synthetic turf is appearing with greater frequency, driven in part by persistent drought conditions, evolving municipal codes and consumer interest in reduced outdoor maintenance. Theresa Minutillo of GardenMark Artificial Grass, which trains contractors nationwide on synthetic turf installation, notes that companies adding the material to their service offerings often find the learning curve less steep than anticipated. “The biggest misconception is that artificial grass is a completely different trade,” says Minutillo. “In reality, the most important part of a successful installation is the base, and that’s something every experienced hardscape contractor already knows how to build.” She adds that the excavation, grading and compaction required for artificial grass closely mirror the base preparation used for paver installations. Contractors aren’t purchasing specialized equipment or retraining their crews. They’re applying existing skills to another product. “If you’re already installing a patio, your crew is on site, your equipment is on site and you’ve already prepared the base,” explains Minutillo. “Adding artificial grass increases the scope of the project with relatively little additional labor, creating a higher-value installation and stronger profit margins.”

TURF AND PAVERS How could the same crews, equipment and base preparation help contractors increase project value? Drawing upon her experience, she says today’s artificial grass is no longer limited to replacing traditional lawns. Contractors are incorporating it into outdoor living spaces, between pavers, around pools, in shaded areas where natural grass struggles, pet areas, playgrounds, backyard putting greens and bocce courts. Consumer demand is also being driven by practical considerations. Water conservation continues to influence landscape decisions in many regions as drought conditions and water restrictions become more common. Frequently, according to Minutillo, homeowners also appreciate eliminating fertilizing and routine lawn maintenance while

maintaining a tidy landscape year-round. Regarding contractors entering the artificial grass market, Minutillo recommends starting with a simple installation that allows crews to build confidence quickly. “A single-piece installation allows crews to become comfortable with the process while delivering an outstanding finished product,” she says. “Once you complete your first project, you’ll realize it’s an easy transition from the work you’re already doing.” Beginning with smaller, straightforward projects allows contractors to refine their installation process, understand material requirements and confidently add artificial grass to their service offerings. From there, they can expand into larger and more complex applications, including complete outdoor living designs, Booth 335 putting greens, pet areas and more. As demand for low-maintenance, water-conscious landscapes continues to grow, artificial grass represents an opportunity for growth of the services many hardscape contractors already provide. The skills, equipment and crews are already in place.

he manicured front lawn has served as an archetype of quintessential American suburbia for generations. In California, however, state mandates and a changing climate are driving a reassessment of that long-held staple. As drought conditions persist and new regulations take effect, a transition is emerging in the residential landscape market. Landscape designers are finding themselves at a crossroads, tasked with navigating the gap between what homeowners envision and what is ecologically, economically and legally sustainable. Rama Nayeri, a landscape designer and owner of Creations Landscape Design, operates in the heart of this cultural and environmental shift. With 98% of her clientele consisting of homeowners looking to renovate their gardens, she frequently acts as an educator, guiding clients away from traditional—and often waterintensive—expectations. “The reality is you don’t have to have a lawn,” Nayeri states, challenging the “old

“I try to design gardens that are mostly lawnfree,” she notes. “I tell clients that there are several drought-tolerant groundcovers that can mimic the look of a lawn. But, in the long term, they’ll cost less to water and don’t require mowing or fertilizing.”

FEATURE people ask, ‘If it attracts pollinators and I walk on it barefoot, am I going to get stung?’” This concern—rooted in a fear of bees and a desire to control the backyard environment— highlights the broader educational hurdle designers must overcome. Nayeri approaches this pragmatically, reassuring clients that it is manageable. “I tell people it’s the kind of groundcover that, right before it’s about to flower, you can simply mow it.” She also points out the logical inconsistency in such fears: “I’ve had some people say they don’t want bees coming to their garden. I tell them, ‘If you have any sort of flowering plants, you’re going to get bees no matter what.’” This persistent expectation for specific plant selections is often rooted in habit rather than rationality. “Sometimes I find people want certain things not because there aren’t better options, but because that’s just what they’re used to. I have to then educate them on a different way that might be more cost-effective and eco-friendlier for them.” Subtle sustainability Nevertheless, client education does not always have to involve a lengthy lecture about water

conservation or carbon footprints. Nayeri has developed a subtle approach to integrating sustainability into her work. She often focuses on the tangible, immediate benefits that resonate with the client—lower maintenance, lower water bills and aesthetic appeal. “I’ll create a design that works based on what the client is looking to do and what I think will work in the space,” Nayeri explains. “We’ll thoroughly go over and discuss it. I’ll create a garden where every season there’s something happening, there’s something blooming or whatever it is. And I’ll create a garden that requires little water, minimal maintenance and I’ll add sustainability features. I don’t necessarily need to fully explain what those features are. As long as they spend as little money as possible, they’re usually happy.” This “design, don’t tell” methodology suggests that the most effective way to promote ecological design is to make it invisible, a seamless part of the design rather than a headline feature. By framing sustainable choices as cost-effective and beautiful, the designer can bypass the client’s potential resistance to being labeled as “going green.” Fundamentally, the transition from a lawn-

As California continues to grapple with water scarcity and shifting environmental policies, designers like Nayeri are positioned as mediators between the nostalgic desires of the homeowner and the pressing realities of the environment. By focusing on practical education, alternative groundcovers like Kurapia and a design philosophy that prioritizes subtle sustainability, the residential landscape design industry may begin to reshape not just the residential gardens of California, but the cultural expectations that define them.

IRRIGATION

Certification, advocacy and community engagement are elevating irrigation standards, delivering water savings and strengthening professional credibility in the field

rrigation maintenance, design and installation is skilled work, and skilled work demands professionalism. The Irrigation Association has built its mission around this principle, uniting technical training, public policy and community engagement to raise industry standards. CEO Natasha Rankin discusses how certification, advocacy and practical education are delivering water savings and strengthening the credibility of professionals in the field. Technical knowledge to field application Rankin begins by emphasizing that while foundational knowledge is essential, its true value is measured on the ground. “Technical knowledge is critical, but it only matters if it shows up in the work,” she says. Adding that landscape and

maintenance contractors find that “irrigation is often where customer expectations, turf and plant health, water costs and system performance all come together. A poorly designed, installed or maintained system can create callbacks, wasted water and frustrated customers.” Conversely, a well-managed system “protects the landscape, improves efficiency and strengthens the contractor’s credibility.” To achieve this, the IA focuses on practical, applicable education. Rankin underlines the value of certified irrigation technician credentials, which “help validate that a professional understands the technical and field-based skills needed to do the job correctly.” The commitment to professionalism is ongoing, as certified professionals are required to complete continuing education every two years

through events like Landscape Irrigation Pros Week and Irrigation Show and Education Week. Rankin urges contractors expanding into irrigation to prioritize professionalism from the start: “Good irrigation work is skilled work, and raising the standard in the field starts with making sure the people doing the work have the training, tools and professional expectations to do it well.” Engaging with policy at the community level The IA actively engages in advocacy, working with policymakers to ensure regulations are practical and effective. “At the community level, our advocacy work often starts with a practical point: efficient irrigation is not the same as simply watering less,” Rankin explains. “Healthy landscapes, trees, sports fields, public spaces

Rankin also notes that the IA’s “Find a Certified Professional” tool helps customers identify qualified irrigation professionals and gives landscape businesses that invest in their teams a visible way to demonstrate professionalism, credibility and technical competence. A concrete example of impact Drilling down into details, Rankin references a specific partnership with not-for-profit Colorado Springs Utilities to illustrate measurable change. The utility’s commercial retrofit program requires participants to work with professionals holding IA credentials such as certified irrigation technician or certified landscape irrigation auditor certification. “This is an important connection: the program does not just encourage or provide information on efficient irrigation technology; it ties the work to professionals who have earned credentials in how irrigation systems are installed, evaluated and managed in the field,” Rankin says. “The program has delivered measurable results, with irrigation and landscape retrofits gaining more than 40 acre-feet of water savings each year. It also shows how IA certification can support practical waterefficiency programs at the local level—by giving water providers a way to connect rebates, retrofits and customer action to qualified professionals.”

Kennedy has seen the proof firsthand. On a previous project in a protected estuary off the coast of South Florida, a third-party engineer monitored the site for three months, testing water for contaminants twice weekly. “Nothing was found,” Kennedy states. “If you build with the right

FEATURE materials using the right methodology, it can be a win.” Designing with the landscape The Discovery Bridge’s curved alignment follows the natural contours of the landscape. According to YBC, the design was developed in collaboration with the Gardens’ stakeholders to preserve the site’s ecological character while using natural materials and architectural detailing to complement the surrounding environment. “We literally got the colour codes from the building that it connects to and matched them on the bridge,” Kennedy says, referring to the distinctive green accents that tie the structure to the adjacent visitor center. These details matter deeply to the YBC team. “I don’t want someone to come out and just see a wooden bridge and think, ‘Oh yeah, that looks cool.’ I want our bridges to aesthetically blend into the surroundings that some of the conventional products may not be able to offer.’” Materials with intention The bridge’s material selection reflects the same level of intentionality. The decking and handrail systems are crafted from black locust, a responsibly sourced American hardwood that requires no chemical treatments. “It’s five to seven times as dense as a softwood, so it’s going to last a very long time,” Kennedy notes. This naturally durable material rejects stains and coatings due to its

THE OWNERSHIP F

Manifesto

or most of my career, I believed homeowners hired me to build exceptional outdoor living spaces. I was wrong. They hired me to carry the weight. Not the weight of lumber, steel, or concrete, but the weight of uncertainty, countless decisions, conflicting opinions, permits, engineering, scheduling, inspections and budgets. The weight of knowing that one wrong decision could become an expensive mistake. Whether the investment is $150k or $1.4m, I’ve learned that every homeowner is asking for the same thing. They rarely say the words, but they mean them: “Take ownership of my backyard— and hand it back to me finished.” Not partially managed, not coordinated by committee and not requiring them to referee disagreements between contractors. They want it finished and complete.

The problem with specialization The irony is that our industry has never been more capable. We have extraordinary architects, talented designers, gifted craftsmen, innovative manufacturers, skilled engineers and specialized trades capable of building remarkable spaces. Yet many homeowners still walk away remembering the stress more than the craftsmanship. Why? Because somewhere along the way, we confused construction with leadership. Construction builds projects, but leadership carries responsibility. They’re not the same thing. Our profession has become increasingly specialized. Every trade owns a scope of work. Designers design, engineers engineer, pool builders build pools, deck builders build decks, landscapers shape the site, electricians pull wire and plumbers plumb. Every professional performs an important

John Lea details why the future of designbuild belongs to companies that take complete ownership of the client experience

role. But homeowners don’t experience our work in separate scopes; they experience one project. When communication breaks down between those scopes, something predictable happens: the homeowner becomes the project manager. They’re suddenly coordinating schedules, relaying information, resolving conflicts, approving unexpected costs and trying to determine who is responsible when something doesn’t go according to plan. That leads to one of the most damaging habits in construction: finger-pointing. The architect references the drawings, the engineer points to the specifications, the builder blames the subcontractor and the subcontractor says they built exactly what they were given. Meanwhile, the homeowner isn’t asking who caused the problem; they’re asking who is going to solve it. I’ve often said, “When everyone is responsible,

pools, automation, lighting, drainage systems, landscape architecture and countless specialty trades—the need for ownership only grows. Complexity doesn’t require more specialists; it requires greater leadership. Our profession has spent decades mastering the art of construction. The next decade will belong to those who master the art of ownership. Because homeowners won’t remember every footing we poured, every beam we installed or every inspection we passed. They’ll remember something far more important. They’ll remember how we made them feel, whether we removed the burden from their shoulders, and whether we carried the weight. That may be the true measure of our profession: not the projects we build, but the problems we’re willing to own. Because homeowners aren’t hiring us to build their backyard; they’re hiring us to carry the weight until we can hand it back complete.

WHY ATTEND? Industry veteran Mike Garcia explains why trade shows are a competitive necessity—and why FutureScape USA is a gamechanger

T

he landscaping industry has evolved rapidly over the past decade. Advances in equipment, higher customer expectations, sustainability goals, labor shortages and digital practices have changed the definition of a successful landscaping company. Today’s contractors manage complex projects, embrace new technologies and compete in a sophisticated marketplace. In this environment, staying informed is not optional. Contractors who want to remain competitive must continually expand their knowledge, build strong networks, and discover new products and services that improve efficiency and profitability. One effective way to accomplish these goals is by attending industry trade shows. Trade shows unite manufacturers, suppliers, experts and landscape professionals. Attendees can experience new equipment, join educational sessions, compare vendors, discover trends and connect with peers. PEOPLE Building supplier relationships Building strong supplier relationships is another critical benefit. Meeting representatives face-toface allows contractors to establish trust that goes beyond emails or phone calls. These personal connections often lead to better customer support, faster problem resolution, preferred pricing, product training, priority access to inventory and long-term partnerships. When equipment issues arise during peak season, having an established relationship with a supplier can have a considerable impact in minimizing downtime. Peer networking and problem-solving Networking with industry peers is equally valuable. Labor shortages, customer acquisition, equipment maintenance, weather disruptions, pricing strategies and regulatory compliance affect companies of every size, and trade shows bring together thousands of professionals navigating similar issues. Networking conversations provide practical insights not found in textbooks or online courses, covering hiring strategies, employee retention, marketing techniques, profit margins, job costing and seasonal planning. These informal discussions often become some of the most valuable aspects of attending an event, and many long-term partnerships and business friendships begin on the show floor. Automation should support accountability rather than impersonate the relationship. Measure the business result, not just the minutes saved. Useful metrics include time to estimate, rescheduling frequency, callbacks, days to invoice, margin leakage and customer response time. Record a baseline before changing the process, then review both speed and quality after implementation. The best first automation is usually a highvolume workflow with stable rules and visible exceptions. Rare, highly variable or safety-sensitive decisions deserve more human involvement. Pricing changes and customer commitments should also retain approval until the company has enough evidence to trust the system. OUTSIDE W LONGER

e’ve all had clients bring us this: the Pinterest photo of the perfect outdoor kitchen, sun shining, flowers blooming and a seating area that looks cool and inviting. But as landscape and hardscape pros know, life rarely looks like that. Rain, scorching July afternoons and chilly fall evenings determine how much a client actually uses the space.

Designing outdoor spaces that keep your clients outside longer creates better experiences and builds a stronger reputation for your business

Season by season Even summer design needs more thought than it gets. A touch of shade, no matter where you are in the country, is essential. A pavilion or pergola are great for that. Lightcolored countertops are also a great design choice to keep surfaces as cool as possible. Pavilions can help keep the wind at bay, and “When pros you can be creative by using privacy fences and can design for accent walls to manage wind exposure. In they build better colder climates, heated flooring reduces snow kitchens and and ice buildup around the patio. Don’t forget relationships winterization! For colder climates, make a plan with clients” for how the sink can be kept safe over the winter. Lighting is one of the best additions for shorter days. Undercap lights, such as simple sixinch lights or strip lights that give a continuous light underneath the countertop, are great. Other options could include downlights or hanging pendants. Lighting is something every outdoor kitchen should have. Designing for daily use Good design starts by helping clients determine the layout, appliances and features they’ll actually use. Storage is super important in an outdoor kitchen space. I use the Outdoor Living Foundations system because I’ve found it provides extremely secure storage. But whatever you use, I recommend a product that is waterproof and provides practical, usable space in the kitchen. Outdoor kitchens are highly customizable, from bartops and backsplashes to seating, electrical, TV lifts and material finishes. Design each space around how your client plans to live in it.

Where landscaping meets hardscaping An outdoor kitchen shouldn’t feel like a separate project dropped into a backyard. A well-placed tree can provide shade in the summer, and evergreen plantings can provide privacy while keeping the area looking alive during the fall and winter. I also like to use landscape lighting to connect the kitchen with patios and walkways. When pros can design for comfort and think beyond perfect weather, they build better kitchens and relationships with clients who actually use their outdoor space and tell their neighbors why.

It may come as no surprise, with drought affecting approximately 40% of the US, and another 15% of the country classified as abnormally dry by the US Drought Monitor. And the fact that pollinator populations continue to decline is not lost on homeowners who want their gardens to fulfill more purpose than simply providing scenery. The good news is a shift away from more “traditional” planting and toward greater resilience offers the opportunity for more plant focused design. Flowering plants remain the top choice among 82% of homeowners upgrading their garden plants. And with the lines blurring between interior spaces and outdoor spaces, it’s clear that thoughtful planting design is more crucial now as homeowners prioritize the quality of everyday living over their home’s resale value.

Other than the US, which country’s landscape inspires you the most? New Zealand. The only place I’ve been where sports turf is a national point of pride.

Other than the US, which country’s landscape inspires you the most? Japan. There are the most interesting landscape decisions. It’s an artform.

Best piece of advice? Don’t design a space for the life you think you’re supposed to live. Design it for the life you actually live.

You’re on vacation—lounge on the beach or explore a new city? New City. People, society, the way these things intersect. Art, street art, culture. Those things inspire and energize me.

You’re on vacation—lounge on the beach or explore a new city? Explore a new city. I can sit still eventually, but first I want to see how people live, eat, garden, entertain and use their outdoor spaces. I’m always looking at patios—even when I’m supposed to be on vacation!

Who would play you in a movie? Nick Offerman. Mustache optional, opinions included. Couldn’t get through the week without... The flat-head screwdriver in my back pocket— the world’s cheapest soil moisture meter.

Who would play you in a movie? I would like Aaron Paul. While I look nothing like him and am far less of an interesting person than he, I thought he crushed his role in Breaking Bad.

One thing that you think would make the industry better? I’d love to see more emphasis on to c how people will actually use a space gr a o p hy /S h utt erst after the project is finished.

One thing that you think would make the industry better? Full adoption of electric OPE. For the reasons we all know and love: pollution, health, etc.

Couldn’t get through the week without… Coffee, in the early hours of summer mornings. Having it in a cup or my blue stanley mug is a must do.

Karaoke song? “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. I went to school in Georgia—it’s basically the law.

Best piece of advice? Consistency beats heroics. Lawns are won with boring weekly habits, not spring miracles.

FUTURESCAPE USA

WELCOME TO

W

elcome to the second edition of FutureScape USA, bringing together the people, businesses and ideas shaping the future of landscaping and outdoor living across North America. Following the success of our inaugural event in 2025, we return to California at an incredibly exciting time for the industry. The region is experiencing significant investment and change, creating new opportunities for landscape professionals, contractors, designers and suppliers. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has brought major international attention and investment to Los Angeles, with venues, public spaces and infrastructure undergoing improvements ahead of the tournament. With the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games still to come, another wave of investment and development is already on the horizon. At the same time, California’s landscaping industry is adapting to some of its biggest challenges yet. The devastating wildfires have created a huge rebuilding effort, while Zone 0 regulations, changes around nonfunctional turf and turf rebate programs are influencing how landscapes are designed, built and maintained. FutureScape USA 2026 is bringing the industry together at the heart of these changes, creating a place to discover new products, share ideas, build relationships and understand where the industry is heading next. Across the exhibition, visitors will discover leading manufacturers, suppliers and technology companies covering irrigation, water management, planting, hard landscaping, outdoor living, equipment and business technology. The Demo Zone will give visitors the chance to see the latest products and equipment in action, while our seminar program will bring together leading contractors, landscape architects, designers and industry experts to discuss the issues and opportunities shaping the profession. There will also be plenty of opportunities to connect. Our Networking Area provides a dedicated space to meet fellow professionals and do business, while our NADRA VIP Area offers a space for members and guests to connect throughout the event. We are also delighted to build new working relationships with the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA), strengthening our connections across the industry, alongside the return of Pro Landscaper USA’s Rising Stars, recognizing the next generation of talent within landscaping. The Pro Landscaper International Awards Theater will bring an international perspective to the show, celebrating outstanding work and showcasing the people and projects across North and South America that are pushing our industry forward. Our first year demonstrated the appetite for a major West Coast event built around the needs of the modern landscape professional. Now, in year two, we are building on that momentum at a pivotal moment for California and the wider industry. We look forward to welcoming you to Santa Monica. Tom Glasby, event director.

DAY 1 SEMINARS

THEATER PARTNER

11AM

Water Policy Navigation: Leading Companies Through California’s Transition Edward Brown | Sandra Giarde | Paul Hansen | Krista Guerrera With California’s water restrictions tightening—and the 2027 ban on potable irrigation for non-functional turf approaching—projects are being rethought from the ground up. This panel brings together industry leaders to discuss how state water policy and regulations are shaping installation practices, maintenance protocols and client expectations. The conversation will explore how to navigate evolving codes, deliver on performance guarantees and meet growing demand for landscapes that balance aesthetics with conservation.

12PM

Creating Regenerative Living Soil: With Biochar and Rock Dust as the Key Components Michael Wittman Michael will share what it takes to build a truly regenerative living soil using biochar and rock dust along with organic matter. A regenerative living soil gets better year to year as opposed to typical soils which deplete in a few short years requiring constant amending and do not have the high microbiology and other great qualities of regenerative living soil that gives the most effective benefits. Learn about the key benefits of using biochar, with examples of visible results that clients will notice and appreciate.

1PM

Waterwise by Design: Rethinking Gardens for the Future Climate Edward Brown | Kevin Hauschel | Ashkan Nochian | Stephanie Bartron | Karen Larson As water scarcity becomes an increasingly urgent challenge across California, landscape design must evolve. This panel explores how to create beautiful, resilient gardens using significantly less water—or none at all. It will examine the role of soil as the foundation of waterwise design, from improving structure and retention to supporting long-term plant health—and the impact of water quality on the soil. It will also cover regulations, the debate around plastic grass, and the use of native plants—all with the goal of building sustainable, future-ready landscapes.

2PM

The Future of Landscape Maintenance: Understanding California’s Water Conservation, Clean Air Policies, and Sustainable Approaches Dan Mabe | Rodrigo Portapila | Ruben Flores AGZA founder Dan Mabe, alongside expert panellists, will provide an overview of California’s evolving water conservation and clean air regulations and examine how they are shaping the future of landscape maintenance. Panelists will explore practical strategies for regulatory compliance, including tool electrification, robotics and automation, water-efficient landscape practices, and other emerging low-impact maintenance practices.

3PM

From Clicks to Contracts: Turning Marketing into Revenue Edward Brown | Eric Watkins | Baltej Gill | Chris Major | Ron McCabe | Matthew Penchuk Marketing is evolving fast, with AI, search, and buyer behavior reshaping how landscaping businesses win work. This panel explores how to build marketing that generates qualified leads, improves conversion throughout the sales funnel, and measures success beyond clicks and traffic. The discussion will also cover SEO and answer engine optimization, advertising, attribution, and the growing role of high-quality photography and visual content in building trust, strengthening brands, and helping businesses stand out.

Mergers and Acquisitions: Building What Buyers Want—Without Breaking What Works Edward Brown | Danny O’Laughlin | Justin Crandall | Shelia Matthews Building your business with an exit in mind, and without stifling innovation, isn’t easy. This panel will explore how to prepare your company for a successful merger or acquisition. Gain insights into identifying the right buyer, and how to navigate the complexities of integration while protecting value. The panel will also look beyond the deal itself to define what success really looks like 12 months post-transaction for the business you’ve built.

12PM

The Labor Shortage: Building a Stronger Workforce Meagan Kirchner Finding and retaining skilled, reliable workers remains one of the industry’s greatest challenges, driven in part by its reliance on immigration and the H-2B seasonal visa program. There’s no simple, one-size-fits-all solution, but this session will explore practical, shorter- and longer-term strategies for building a sustainable workforce, covering immigration compliance, common questions, and alternative recruitment and retention approaches.

12:45PM

The New Urban Park: Designing a 100-Acre Legacy Jerico Farfan Landscape Craft Studio presents South County Regional Park—a 100-acre transformation of farmland into a future-forward community hub. Explore how environmental stewardship, sustainable planting and topographic design is creating new open space. Drawing on foundational metropolitan park principles, this session reveals how visionary placemaking, cultural amenities and smart growth planning shape a lasting legacy.

1:20PM

The Earth is the Floorplan: How Landscape Design Can Restore Health, Belonging, and Connection Michael Bernier Through an emerging Living Human™ model, Michael explores how biophilic environmental design, shared outdoor rooms, edible landscapes and deep connections to nature can intentionally spark everyday encounters. The talk challenges landscape professionals to see their work not as the finishing layer of development, but as essential social infrastructure—creating places that support longer healthspans, encourage spontaneous human connection, and allow people and nature to thrive together.

2PM

The Business Case for Sustainable Landcare Kathleen Hallal Discover how sustainable landcare practices can help you reduce costs, meet growing customer demand, and stay ahead of competition. By offering clients the solutions they increasingly want from the start, you can avoid uncomfortable conversations about conventional methods while building trust and winning new business. This session will also explore practical ways sustainable practices can reduce irrigation needs and conserve water.

2:30PM

BOOKED SOLID™: Build a Predictable Sales Engine Chris Breen Most contractors don’t need more leads—they need a better sales system. In this session, Chris Breen will share the BOOKED SOLID™ framework and show how to build a predictable sales engine using the right People, Process, and Tools to increase close rates, improve the customer experience, and create consistent sales results.

3PM

From Leads to Profit: Winning Strategies for Deck Builders Chris Breen | Dave Settlemyer | Bryan Miller | April Edwards | Kevin Choquette Running a deck or outdoor living business means juggling marketing, design, estimating and production. This session brings together a marketing strategist, a designer, an estimating technology expert and a working deck builder business owner for a fast-paced, moderator-led conversation on what’s actually working right now. It will be moderated by Chris Breen, founder of Legacy Decks Academy and Legacy Decks, and chair of the NADRA Education Committee, who has helped hundreds of builders scale their businesses after building his own from the ground up.

MASTERCLASSES DAY ONE 10:30AM

DAY TWO 10:30AM

Every prior software wave digitized existing workflows but left the physical trades untouched. The bottleneck was the manual nature of takeoffs—someone manually measuring plans, counting units, and estimating quantities. Join Michael Ding to learn how AI computer vision models are structurally different and represent the key the industry needed to recover productivity and gains across every trade.

Great work is not enough if local customers cannot find you. Baltej Gill breaks down the modern local marketing foundation every outdoor living business needs: getting found on Google, earning and using reviews, turning a website into booked jobs, and measuring what actually drives revenue. He closes with how that same foundation now decides whether AI models recommend you. Practical, jargon-free, and ready to apply Monday morning.

The Construction Productivity Paradox and What Finally Breaks It Michael Ding

11:45AM

The Other 85%: Hidden Bluebeam Workflows Every Landscape Professional Should Know Troy DeGroot In this fast-paced session, Bluebeam Certified Instructor Troy DeGroot shares practical techniques that landscape contractors, designers, project managers, and estimators can immediately apply to save time, reduce rework, and improve project communication. Rather than focusing on software features alone, this session demonstrates how better workflows help move information seamlessly from design through estimating, construction, and project closeout. Attendees will discover how experienced Bluebeam users organize information, standardize processes, and create more efficient project teams without adding more software or increasing overhead.

1:45PM

The Future of Landscape Management: Save Time, Increase Profits, Powered by True Pro Brandon Conroy Discover how today’s most successful landscape companies are using AI and automation to save time, eliminate manual processes, and increase profitability. In this masterclass, you’ll learn how True Pro streamlines every stage of your business—from lead management and proposals to scheduling, routing, invoicing, collections, and reporting—so you can spend less time managing software and more time growing your company.

From Invisible to In-Demand Baltej Gill

11:50AM

Making Difficult Water Work: Rainmaker.Earth, Soil Health, and Fertilizer Efficiency in Parks and Municipal Landscapes Kevin Hauschel Irrigation water isn’t just wetting your landscapes and parks—it’s quietly driving soil health, compaction, plant performance, fertilizer efficiency, and water holding capacity. This session explores how reclaimed, recycled, and poor well water can either undermine or unlock the potential of your turf, trees, and planting beds, and why “fixing the water” is often the fastest route to healthier, more resilient public green space. You’ll also see how Rainmaker.Earth’s advanced oxidation water optimization system can be fitted to almost any existing irrigation infrastructure, restructuring the physical and chemical makeup of your water to mimic the benefits of a perfect thunderstorm every time you irrigate.

1:20PM

The Visibility Gap: Why Enterprise Landscape Companies Are Leaving Revenue on the Table, and the Infrastructure Shift That Closes It Wes Hunt Enterprise landscape companies cannot systematically verify what is happening at the properties they maintain. That visibility gap costs them: enhancement revenue that is never proposed, clients who leave because disputes cannot be settled with evidence, and account manager capacity consumed by windshield time. Wes Hunt, cofounder and CEO of Optic Systems, explains why the gap is structural rather than a people problem, and what it takes to close it.

2:30PM

From Estimate to Profit: Practical Strategies for Improving Every Step of the Customer Journey Dan Weaver Join this masterclass to explore practical strategies for improving every step of the customer journey—from first contact through project completion. This session will walk through design, estimating, scheduling, change orders, job costing, and customer communication, highlighting opportunities to reduce friction, improve efficiency, and protect margins. Attendees will leave with actionable ideas to create a smoother experience for customers and a more profitable process for their business.

Now in its second year, Pro Landscaper USA’s Rising Stars Awards recognizes individuals working in landscape design and outdoor construction who are taking distinctive approaches to their work. The initiative is free to enter and intended to highlight professionals demonstrating measurable growth, original thinking, and a consistent commitment to quality. Celebrated at the VIP Lounge, the selected individuals represent a crosssection of emerging talent across the sector. Their work offers insight into where the industry may be heading, and they are being featured across both days of FutureScape USA, Santa Monica, providing attendees with an opportunity to meet them in person.

His background in landscape architecture and habitat restoration informs his approach, which integrates ecological considerations with site-specific design.

He designs bespoke experiences that help people slow down, recover and reconnect. With a commitment to quality and functionality, he ensures every sauna is built to last and uniquely tailored.

Zachary Stevenson, BSquared Pools Stevenson works on the design and fabrication of pools, spas, planter boxes and related outdoor living elements. His approach focuses on durability and reduced maintenance requirements, with an emphasis on refining how these products are conceived and constructed.

Peshekhonov leads design and on-site execution at GreenPlace, specializing in drainage, material detailing and plant palettes for Southern California’s microclimates. With five years of practice and a 30-person crew background, he bridges drawing and dirt, ensuring every layer is built to last.

Alison Nieves, Nieves Landscape Nieves serves in a leadership capacity with the California Landscape Contractors Association and is part of the next generation of management at Nieves Landscape, a family-owned firm based in Santa Ana that has operated in Southern California since 1985.
