Pro Landscaper Project Awards Brochure 2026

Page 1

THURSDAY 9 JULY 2026

DE VERE HORSLEY ESTATE

WELCOME

What another amazing year of great projects!

If you ever want to see the ingenuity, creativity, problem solving and innovation that personifies what we do, then look at the incredible examples that have been shortlisted in this year’s Pro Landscaper Project Awards.

Having personally been involved for the last four years, it’s inspiring to see how the bar keeps being raised (yes, yet again) – and it’s not just based on budget levels, with intense competition seen across all levels of projects. Judges who we have worked on across this time repeatedly feedback just how much standards have risen and continue to rise in the schemes and the quality of submissions.

So, we celebrate through these awards excellent landscaping projects valued up to £250k across a range of category values that form the heart of what is delivered across the country. They look at both overall scheme values as well as areas of technical speciality shining a spotlight and showcasing the extreme technical ability, problem solving skills, and work that these projects so often demonstrate. We are excited to also include this year the Project Awards PLUS Garden, which had no financial cap, to also recognise other aspirational and visionary garden designs that have been delivered and implemented.

The fact that they are open to all is reflected in the intensity of the competition so being shortlisted and winning is an incredible achievement. So, congratulations to all those landscapers and garden designers featured this year which include some established and new names that I am certain we will hear more of in the future.

Being able to recognise these projects and sharing what is so special about them in this winner’s brochure also helps inspire the wider industry by showing them what is possible to influence future schemes.

Thank you to our esteemed panel of judges – who are featured on page 41 – for supporting the awards and helping identify our category and Supreme Winner.

Thank you also to our event partners and supporters who are really important and critical to us and allow us to put on these awards.

WITH THANKS TO OUR PARNTERS

THE CIRCLE GARDEN | PDGROUNDSCAPE LTD

As soon as PDGroundscape Ltd saw the plans for this project, the contractor was eager to be involved, seeing the potential for it to become an exceptional garden – the designs by Tom Hill Garden Design were rich in detail, technically considered, and full of opportunities to deliver something truly special. It required skill and craftsmanship, and pushed the team to their limits, but PDGroundscape Ltd brought the plans to life. The rear circle patio was a challenging part of the build, especially the centre, which had a radius of 1.5m and had to be filled with sandstone walling material to create a drystone wall effect on the ground where the joints followed the radius point. The biggest challenge, though, was the main water feature, vertical stone wall and bespoke copings. But these features have created a focal point in the garden and provide a huge sense of pride for PDGroundscape Ltd.

GARDEN BEHIND THE GATE | NOREEN BARDSLEY GARDEN DESIGN

Noreen Bardsley Garden Design creates thoughtful, sustainable gardens that balance beauty with long-term resilience. The studio takes a clear and considered approach, designing spaces that work with natural conditions rather than against them – and this project is no different. The brief was to transform a large rear London garden into restorative sanctuary that supports daily wellbeing and feels like a natural extension of the home. When entering the garden behind the gate, the intention was for the experience to shift immediately into a calm, immersive landscape offering respite from demanding professional lives, prioritising ecological resilience and long-term sustainability, with a focus on soil health, drought-tolerant and wildlife-supporting planting. The garden was constructed using a light-touch, low-impact methodology, with all clearance, excavation, and soil preparation undertaken entirely by hand. Materials were selected with a strong emphasis on sustainability, durability, and low embodied energy, prioritising local sourcing and reuse wherever possible. Sustainability underpins the design through composting, habitat creation, minimal disturbance and year-round planting, resulting in a self-sustaining, biodiverse and visually compelling garden.

EPSOM TOWNHOUSE GARDEN | HELEN SAUNDERS GARDEN DESIGN

Purchasing a property with a garden for the first time, these Epsom-based clients wanted somewhere to enjoy outdoor living, with somewhere to eat, cook and relax into the evening. They also wanted a small space for growing edibles and to house some of their existing collection of herbs and ornamentals in pots, with an outdoor sink and workspace for garden tasks; but the space still needed to be low maintenance to support their busy professional lives. They asked for a planting scheme that mixed rich colours with whites, and storage was essential. The finished garden feels calm and immersive, with a lush, woodland-style tapestry of planting that softens and subtly defines each area, in keeping with Helen Saunders’ naturalistic approach that puts planting at the heart of every garden. It also showcases the skill and craftsmanship of contractor Greenscape Gardens in a space that was also rich in hardscape detail, achieving a lot within a relatively small footprint.

NORTH LONDON EXOTIC GARDEN | AOBA LANDSCAPES

Alongside garden designer Georgia Lindsay, Aoba Landscapes turned a simple backyard into an exotically inspired space with strong yearround structure, combining evergreen planting with ornamental grasses and perennials. Sweeping curves in the hard landscaping soften the space and connect a recently installed porcelain terrace to the wider look, with precise curved cuts forming a natural transition into the garden, complemented by limestone sett pathways laid in flowing lines. Geometric hardwood panels form a bespoke timber screen and provide a dramatic focal point, whilst steel edging defines the planting beds, creating clear boundaries. The biggest challenge for the build was access, which was through a narrow 700mm-wide side passage. Without the use of machinery, all excavation, material delivery and waste removal had to be carried out manually. But Aoba Landscapes overcame this and other constraints to transform a rectangular lawn into a cohesive and welcoming garden with what the clients called “top-tier” craftsmanship.

THE CIRCLE GARDEN | TOM HILL GARDEN DESIGN

An intentionally relaxed client brief and a blank canvas to work with meant that Tom Hill Garden Design had the freedom to design a unique space that brought clarity, structure and cohesion to the landscape, connecting it to the house and the wider setting. Hill wanted to build on the existing striking sylvan backdrop and reinforce the garden’s woodland character that created a sense of enclosure, despite the property being in a built-up residential area – though had to work around a mature American oak protected by a Tree Preservation Order. There was also a large annex that needed to be integrated, with achieving cohesion across all areas of the garden being one of the key challenges from early in the process – something which repeating materials throughout the garden with gentle variations in companion stone helped to accomplish, whilst the recurring motif of circles and concentric rings add rhythm and visual interest. A strong collaboration between the designer and the contractor, PDGroundscape Ltd, allowed Hill’s vision to be realised and the project to be a huge success – winning three Pro Landscaper Project Awards.

MALLINSON ROAD | TOM HOWARD GARDEN DESIGN & LANDSCAPING LTD

Tom Howard Garden Design & Landscaping saw the potential to turn a small garden in Clapham, London into something truly special, creating a private, cocooned oasis. There needed to be three distinct zones for the young, professional family who lived there: an area to cook and gather around a pizza oven, a space to dine together as a family, and a place to simply sit and relax. Retaining the existing ivy was central to the design, but with the climbing plant sometimes being a source of contention, the team proactively met with neighbours to share the proposed design and address any concerns. The ivy, framed and set off by the cedar feature posts along the rear boundary, now creates a stunning natural backdrop that adds great depth to the space. The garden feels like a natural and considered extension of the home and a calm, green oasis in the city.

ROOM TO BREATHE GARDEN AT AMERSHAM HOSPITAL | JEN DONNELLY GARDEN DESIGN AND CATHERINE GIBBON GARDEN DESIGN

From a Gold-medal-winning garden at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show to a calming space for people to find some respite, the Room to Breathe garden has become a permanent feature at Amersham Hospital. Longtime friends Catherine Gibbon and Jen Donnelly – who both volunteer at the hospital – transformed a disused courtyard into a plant-filled sanctuary with sunny and shady places for those visiting or working at the hospital to sit and enjoy nature. It needed to be accessible, safe and available to all, be delivered on a very modest budget, and be capable of being maintained by hospital volunteers – all of which the design duo achieved, and more. Judges called it “a beautifully considered and restorative healthcare garden delivering genuine emotional and wellbeing benefits for patients, visitors and staff. The transformation from a neglected courtyard into a calm sanctuary was achieved with sensitivity, strong volunteer involvement and excellent reuse of materials, resulting in a project with lasting community value.”

PLANTING DESIGN

DRUID STREET | CITYSCAPES

On a council housing estate owned by Southwark Council, the local business improvement district Team London Bridge wanted to redress the failure of a previous wildflower meadow and create a planting scheme that was sustainable, manageable and that increases biodiversity, through the provision of habitat and resources. The garden was to showcase reuse and repurposing through the use of recycled aggregates, with high-impact, resilient planting in low nutrient crushed concrete substrates. These were to be reused from Cityscapes’ RHS Chelsea Repurposed show garden that featured at the flower show in 2024, alongside two hawthorn trees and half the plants. The planting is a naturalistic grassland scheme based on a matrix format, laid out across whole the site. The key plants are a selection of grasses, such as Stipa lessingina and Brachypodium pinnatum, distributed across the site and punctuated by key structural shrubs. The perennial plants are then interspersed in between according to horizontal and vertical layers. The finished garden has transformed the site from a dull, unused area of low biodiversity value, into a dynamic landscape thriving with life.

MEREHEATH LANE | ROBERT HUGHES STUDIO

To complement their property’s newly renovated exterior, the clients were looking for a seamless indoor-outdoor transition with their external spaces. The front garden was to have a simple, sophisticated, low-maintenance kerb appeal, which Robert Hughes Studio achieved with a gravel driveway and a large porcelain step leading to the front door, with textured pavers leading around the property. The rear and side gardens were to offer dynamic, interconnected zones for relaxation and entertainment and provide a space to practice yoga. A timber pergola sits above porcelain slabs that are cut into planks to define the dining area, and more plank paving further back houses an outdoor living room, all surrounded by planting to complement the setting. A raised deck provides a space for yoga whilst a firepit is at the centre of a shadier sunken gravel terrace. Together with contractor Base Squared, Robert Hughes Studio created the ultimate private retreat that offers a harmonious, zen-like connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces

GARDEN DESIGN & BUILD | SW LONDON LANDSCAPING

A recently retired client was looking to invest more in her outdoor space, where she would now be spending more time. She wanted to refurbish and reduce the existing the pool by two metres and better connect this area to the rest of the garden whilst creating a more naturalistic feel, with planting closer to the house and pool. Tired, white porcelain tiles were removed and the concrete and rubble excavated to introduce new planting beds around the pool, with species such as Oenothera lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterflies’, Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ and Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’. Terracotta toned porcelain tiles and brushed chestnut Designboard decking were added to provide a more rustic look, alongside a wooden pergola and mature multistem Amelanchier trees. No side or rear access meant all materials and plants had to be taken through the house, including 31t of soil and six mature rootball multistem trees. But the introduction of soft landscaping has transformed the garden into a beautiful and harmonious space.

THE CIRCLE GARDEN WATER-WALL AND SERPENTINE WALLING | TOM HILL GARDEN DESIGN AND PDGROUNDSCAPE LTD

The water feature and curved wall are undoubtedly the focal point in this now multi-award-winning garden. What was once an awkward side space adjoining the property is now a visually striking element, with a water feature first proposed by Tom Hill to create a strong sense of invitation and movement through the garden. The space acted as a link between the front and rear, as well as being visible from several viewpoints, and so needed to feel integral to the overall scheme rather than an afterthought. It was also important that it was a fully bespoke element rather than a pre-made solution, which allowed for greater creative freedom but also introduced added complexity, as did the vertically laid drystone finished which was proposed to elevate the design further. “A striking main feature with a fantastically constructed serpentine wall beneath that winds its way through the space incredibly well,” said the judges.

MELODY ROAD | HARRINGTON PORTER LTD

Harrington Porter is no stranger to awards – the London landscape design and build practice is known for delivering highly detailed, bespoke spaces that balance beauty, functionality and long-term sustainability. Its project in Melody Road – this year’s Supreme Winner as well as topping its category – does exactly that. As part of an extensive renovation, the clients were combining two Victorian terraced houses into one family home, merging two separate London gardens into a single cohesive landscape. They wanted a peaceful oasis within the city that balanced contemporary outdoor living features with softer, traditional planting sympathetic to the Victorian architecture and the clients’ love of horticulture. The challenge was carrying out such an extensive project while major building works to the house were simultaneously underway. But Harrington Porter delivered a space that even our judges said they would be happy to have as their own garden. It combines carefully connected zones that encourage relaxation, entertaining and day-to-day family living, showcasing the company’s fully integrated design-and-build capability.

THE OLD RECTORY RECLAIMED COUNTRY GARDEN | WILLOW TREE LANDSCAPES

There was a clear vision from Willow Tree Landscapes’ client: to transform the garden into a structured and characterful space that could be enjoyed day to day, with defined seating areas whilst making the whole garden feel connected. Cohesive material choices helped to achieved this, with a preference for those that are natural and reclaimed, and pathways seamlessly link seating areas, paved sections and the pond. Each area has its own purpose but still works as part of the overall aesthetic, making the garden practical for everyday use while staying true to the original vision. The reclaimed feature wall is a standout element and one that was new for the team and so involved developing new skills on site. Each piece had to be selected and placed carefully to get both the structure right and keep a consistent look, making it one of the more challenging parts of the job. But this, and the project as a whole, show a strong level of workmanship across all elements, from groundwork through to final finishes.

QVC’S REFLECTIVE RETREAT GARDEN AT BBC GARDENERS’ WORLD LIVE 2025 | KITTI KOVACS GARDEN DESIGN

Created for BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2025, QVC’s Reflective Retreat Garden was designed as a contemporary, restorative space that encouraged visitors to slow down, reflect and reconnect with nature. Combining aesthetic beauty with environmentally conscious design, the garden centred around a cascading waterfall, reflective pool and a bespoke sculptural glass water feature that captured light, movement and surrounding planting to create an immersive sensory experience. Despite being constructed on a flat exhibition site with a three-week build programme, the project successfully overcame significant technical challenges, including creating elevation for the waterfall, accommodating underground services and installing a complex hand-crafted glass sculpture. More than 40t of reclaimed granite and 2,500 plants and specimen trees were carefully integrated to form a lush, biodiverse landscape. Sustainability was central to the design, with chemical-free water filtration, permeable surfaces and a commitment to reusing materials and planting after the show. The result was a visually striking yet environmentally responsible garden that received widespread acclaim, winning a Platinum Award, Best Commercial Garden and the People’s Choice Award at the event. QVC was so delighted with the finished garden that it commissioned Kitti Kovacs to design a further show garden for this year’s RHS Sandringham Flower Show.

EDWARD STREET HOSPITAL | JACK MOODY LANDSCAPING AND CIVIL ENGINEERING LTD

As part of a wider vision to redefine mental health facilities for older adults, Edward Street Hospital required outdoor spaces that would actively support recovery through a calm, therapeutic environment. Jack Moody Landscaping and Civil Engineering delivered a carefully considered landscape designed to promote wellbeing, accessibility and meaningful engagement with nature for patients, staff and visitors alike. The scheme prioritised inclusivity, ensuring all users could access and enjoy the outdoor environment with confidence and ease. A series of interconnected spaces were created to provide opportunities for relaxation, gentle exercise and quiet reflection, forming an integral part of the patient experience. Biodiverse planting, sensory-rich gardens and community-accessible green spaces work together to create a landscape that is both restorative and engaging. Beyond its therapeutic benefits, the project was designed to leave a lasting legacy, offering opportunities for community involvement, skills development and employment. The result is a welcoming environment that enhances wellbeing while strengthening connections between people and place. As the judges commented, “The balance between informal and formal is perfect and the resulting scheme provides a perfect healing environment.”

POTTERS BAR PROJECT | GRIFFIN LANDSCAPES

With a design already in place, the clients were looking for a contractor to deliver the scheme to a high standard of workmanship and so approached Griffin Landscapes. They wanted a practical, multifunctional garden that could support both everyday use and socialising. The design incorporated multiple levels to maximise the space, alongside dedicated areas including a children’s play zone and an outdoor kitchen for entertaining, though it was down to Griffin Landscapes to develop this outdoor kitchen and built-in BBQ area, ensuring it integrated seamlessly with the rest of the garden. There were hurdles throughout the build, such as having to redesign and install drainage serving the house extension that had been incorrectly installed previously. But the finished project exceeded expectations, delivering a well-balanced, refined garden that feels both considered and effortless in its use. Every element sits comfortably within the space, with a strong relationship between materials, structure and layout.

THE PERGOLA STAGE | BANCROFT LEE LANDSCAPES LTD

This is a client that continues to be impressed by Bancroft Lee Landscapes – so much so that this is the fourth project the company has completed for them, and it has led to numerous enquiries from others since. On this occasion, the team was asked to design a functional, stylish garden that was level with the threshold of their new bi-fold doors, from which previously a large step had led into the garden. They were looking for a large lawn – level with any paving surface – for their grandchildren to play on, an area for a large dining table, a seating area that caught the evening sun, a large bespoke shed for storage after downsizing, low maintenance planting with trees for privacy, and a pergola to frame the bi-fold windows without taking away too much light. Bancroft Lee Landscapes created the latter using steel brackets and timber frames, with decking beneath that was consistent in colour and texture with the cladding for the shed and blended seamlessly with the limestone paving. Simple, pollinator friendly planting offers a touch of colour to the overall scheme.

FRENSHAM HILLSIDE | LANDFORM CONSULTANTS LTD

Frensham Hillside is a new build property built on the site of an older property demolished to make way for this contemporary family home. Fusing a German high-end eco kit house onto a traditional English oak barn annex, the house is full of environmental innovation and can be fully off grid for days at a time. It sits on about two acres of landscaped gardens, with the larger land parcel outside the planning zone of another four acres laid out to meadow and wildlife pond. A dramatic change of level – up to 15m from road level to the existing ground levels –made the project incredibly challenging for Landform Consultants, alongside fulfilling the clients’ wishes, which were to have a large flat drive, a flat lawn for play, a swimming pool, a tennis court and vegetable gardens. The outcome speaks for itself, though. Frensham Hillside has not only won a Pro Landscaper Project Award this year, but it has also previously scooped a 2026 Pro Landscaper International Award in the Europe Heat and a 2026 APL Award.
