Issue 1

Spring 2025

For more than a decade, Pro Landscaper has been covering the UK landscaping industry – everything from small domestic gardens to public realm projects to large-scale masterplans. At the start of this year, we made the leap to take the brand across the pond, launching Pro Landscaper on the west coast of the USA – and in just a matter of weeks, the differences between the same industry but thousands of miles apart were apparent.

But what about the rest of the world? Faced with a climate emergency, it’s arguably more important now than ever to look to other countries for their best practices, innovations and bold ideas. That’s where Pro Landscaper International comes in.

In the pages that follow, there are projects from across five continents – a mountainside garden overlooking Marbella, a verdant retirement community in Chennai, and a park beneath a highway in Orlando, to name a few. They’re all projects that have been shortlisted for the inaugural FutureScape Global Awards taking place in Saudi Arabia, a country whose Vision 2030 is looking to test the realms of possibility.

‘Giga projects’ such as Neom and Red Sea Global are more than ambitious; they could become blueprints for sustainable development. And as the name ‘giga project’ would suggest, they're not small in size. Entire new cities are being created, and with the environment at the heart of them. Linear city The Line in Neom is set to conserve the majority of its lands as a nature reserve, for instance. And Green Riyadh will transform the country’s capital with 7.5 million trees being planted by 2030.

Projects such as these can act as inspiration to those investing in designing, building and maintaining landscapes in the Middle East and further afield, and there are plenty of other projects around the world that can do the same – all of which can help build a sustainable future that puts landscaping at the forefront of our approach.

Approval for a new park in rural Western Sydney, Australia has been granted. The two-hectare park, designed by landscape architect Aspect Studios and traditional custodians, will be located in Australia’s new Bradfield City Centre development.

With plans to host community events, the park will feature a sky ring, providing shelter, and directing rainwater to support irrigation systems.

The park embraces Dharug cultural heritage, whilst homing 550 mature trees and 70,000 species of native plants, providing 65% tree canopy and chosen in collaboration with the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, First Nations nurseries and traditional custodians.

“Iconic cities need iconic open spaces, and Bradfield’s Central Park will create a new green anchor for Australia’s first new city in 100 years,” says Bradfield Development Authority’s chief executive Ken Morrison.

The new city is expected to provide 10,000 new homes and 20,000 new jobs. Sat atop Bradfield metro station, it will link the new city to Western Sydney airport scheduled to open in 2026.

The 23km Western Sydney Airport metro line is also currently under construction and is due to open in April 2027 after being delayed. The park is planned to parallel the opening of the station.

“Thousands of people will pour out of the metro station directly into Central Park, which will become a gathering spot for people to live,

Chattanooga becomes North America’s first National Park City

Chattanooga in Tennessee has been recognized as a National Park City, making it the first in North America to achieve such a status.

The city has gone from being one of the most polluted cities in the United States in the 1970s to an “outdoor destination and biodiversity hotspot”.

It has created a charter for an even greener urban environment too, pledging ‘unrivalled access to nature’ for everyone, regardless of age, race or

Singapore unveils immersive rainforest park co-designed by Grant Associates

More than 7,000 trees and shrubs have been used to create a new 13ha wildlife park that has opened in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve in Singapore.

Landscape architecture firm Grant Associates was appointed in 2017 to lead the landscape vision for Rainforest Wild Asia up to tender alongside CLR Design, a practice focused on habitat creation. With developer Mandai Wildlife Group, they created an immersive and sensory experience with open, naturalistic habitats for the likes of hog deer, Malayan tiger and bearded pig.

China Jingye Engineering Corporation was awarded the design and build contract in 2020 following the initial design work. It engaged DP Architects and DP Green as consultants.

background, a culture of outdoor activity, environmental stewardship and education, inclusive and sustainable development, community and cultural enrichment, with improved support for food, agriculture, arts and creativity.

“National Park City status introduces a new chapter for a city with a long history of revitalization and renewal through connecting its unique landscape and the history of its people,” says Alison Barnes, trustee of the

National Park City Foundation which co-ordinates the peer review process to achieve the status with support from Salzburg Global and World Urban Parks.

Chattanooga is the third city to become a National Park City. London was the first in 2019 and Adelaide followed two years later.

The leading industry trade bodies in the UK have collaborated to create a new tool that will support garden designers, landscape architects, and landscapers to bolster their natural capital when designing and creating outdoor spaces. A condensed version of ‘elemental’ debuted at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year, where it reduced carbon emissions across all show garden categories by 25%.

It has been spearheaded by Nicholsons’ Liz Nicholson, who has worked with the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers, British Association of Landscape Industries, the Landscape Institute, the RHS, the Horticultural Trades Association and the Association of Professional Landscapers to bring it to market.

Gillespies opens new studio in Riyadh

Landscape architecture firm Gillespies has opened its second studio in the Middle East, this time in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Managing director Jim Diggle calls it a “natural next step” for the practice in the region. It has worked in the Middle East for more than 30 years, and 17 years in Saudi Arabia.

“We’ve built an extensive portfolio of large-scale landscape and masterplanning projects,” says Riddle, who adds that its new studio will further enable it to

support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambitions. It has already contributed to the country’s ‘giga projects’ and has worked extensively for PIF entities, Royal Commissions and Municipalities.

Landscape Design of the Baptiste House

DIANA WIESNER ARQUITECTURA Y PAISAJE SAS

The landscape design of the Baptiste House needed to create spaces of contemplation, tranquility and a fluid connection between the inside and the outside. Inspired by the subtle movements of the breeze, the landscape seeks to create a serene atmosphere that enriches the sensory experience of those who inhabit the site. Carefully designed gardens provide niches for bird life, promoting biodiversity and strengthening the link between architecture and nature.

Located in the savannah of Bogotá, the landscape proposal engages with its surroundings, integrating the outdoor spaces with the ecological corridors that connect the hills and the river. This relationship with the larger landscape is reinforced by the selection of mostly native species, which favors the regeneration of the ecosystem and the presence of pollinators. The vegetation fulfils not only an aesthetic function, but also an ecological one, allowing the preservation of habitats and the adaptation of the space to the natural dynamics of the territory.

The gardens have been designed as living spaces where temporality and seasonal change enrich the perception of the place. The landscaping accompanies the architecture, highlighting its lines and volumes and blurring the boundaries between the built and the natural.

Overall, the landscape design of the Baptiste House transcends its ornamental function and becomes an essential element of the living experience, promoting a harmonious balance between man and their environment.

Making history as the first Burmese garden to feature at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Spirit of Partnership Garden won not just a highly coveted Gold medal but also the award for Best Sanctuary Garden at last year’s event.

Sponsored by the Burma Skincare Initiative—a UK-based charity that works to improve access to quality skincare for people in Myanmar—the show garden needed to highlight the charity’s works in the Asian country, the lived experience of people with serious skin diseases, and the partnership between dermatology communities in the UK and Myanmar. It celebrates this partnership through a palette of plants that are found in

Myanmar but will also grow happily in the UK. A hand-aged 16th-century Burmese stupa also brought a touch of Southeast Asia to central London, with a waterfall cascading through the garden to a serene pool above which sits a traditional Burmese stilt house. The lived experiences of those with skin diseases were represented through the various layers of texture.

After the show, the garden—designed by Helen Olney and built by Conquest Spaces—was relocated in full to Dulwich College, a residential and day school in London. Here, the garden is used to teach pupils about the work of the charity, the people they support and the rich heritage of Myanmar. Students and staff see physical and mental health benefits by spending time in an attractive, green environment.

Camojan Garden

Spread across two joined plots on the slopes of a mountain, the Camojan Garden designed by Antonio Piquera

Landscape Design covers more than 4,000m2 where two independent villas have been built. It’s on a slope of more than 17m in only 100m of development, which offers remarkable views of the sea and the city of Marbella—views the client wanted to maintain whilst also preserving privacy at strategic points.

They also wanted the design to be integrated with the tree structure of the mountain, which was native to the Mediterranean climate. Where the original shrub and herbaceous vegetation of the plot had been degraded by building pressure, Piquera proposed a varied and colorful vegetation cover that would evoke the Mediterranean bush but maintain the essence of a luxury villa.

The garden balances order and spontaneity. Antonio Piquera Landscape Design focused on key aspects such as reducing consumption and maintenance, mobility within the plot, the

relationship between plantings and uses, the geometry of the space, and the perception of a different language to that which has characterized the gardens of Marbella over the last 30 years. Now a dynamic and ever-evolving landscape, the garden is a perfect match for the Mediterranean mountainside.

Walkway House

FGMF ARQUITETOS

The Walkway House has been designed to seamlessly integrate into its surroundings, be that its urban setting within Sao Paulo or the forest it threads through. FGMF Architects’ design emerges from a deep connection with the terrain’s unique features, with the site consisting of two distinct areas: a flat grassy section and a steep, densely wooded slope, both positioned below a dead-end access road.

A large slab with a green roof helps the house to blend into the landscape. It has been created at street level, allowing entry via a path that crosses a reflecting pool and leads to an open staircase. Beneath this green roof, a 14m walkway connects the courtyard and the wooded area, with the social and leisure spaces opening onto a flat section, where the pool and solarium form a central patio.

On the lower level, suspended walkways weave through trees, linking elevated volumes supported by pilotis and giving the appearance of floating among the canopy—immersing the house, the office and the gym into nature.

The private areas are contained within a floating volume above the ground floor slab, enclosed by brise-soleils. This section opens onto views of the city, the central courtyard, and the site’s majestic trees, balancing privacy with a strong connection to the surroundings.

Founded in 1999 by FAU-USP colleagues, FGMF creates contemporary architecture with diverse materials and techniques, emphasizing the relationship between architecture and humankind. With no rigid formulas, each project starts from scratch, using design as a research tool. Its work spans various scales and programs, reinforcing its belief that architecture, like life, should be pluralistic, heterogeneous, and dynamic. fgmf.com.br

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

With a higher population than any other city in Vietnam and known as the country’s economic hub, Ho Chi Minh City’s residents are in need of accessible green space to escape the hustle and bustle. That’s why Cardinal Court, a mixed-used residential development at the heart of South Saigon’s vibrant central business district, offers common areas for those living in its high-rise towers to find some respite.

Relaxation areas surround the central swimming pool, which is a focal point of the main common landscape areas on the ground floor, featuring locally sourced blue stone. A multi-layered natural landscape belt, with careful placement of plants and trees, provides shelter and creates a tranquil microenvironment. The granite raised planters feature a diverse palette of tropical plants for a lush, green border.

The green oasis serves as a sanctuary to residents, acting as a buffer for the city’s noise and pollution, with the landscape design seamlessly integrating

indoor and outdoor amenities to enhance the overall living experience.

Cardinal Court’s approach to sustainability has been recognized with an Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification. The development beautifully brings nature into a residential setting, creating a serene landscape that feels a world away from the urban environment in which it’s situated.

Resin Bound Surfacing in the Gulf Region

Addagrip transforms Dubai's beachfront with durable, stunning resin bound surfacing

Resin bound systems are ideal for pool surrounds and waterfront landscapes, offering a slip-resistant, UV-stable, and easy -to-maintain finish that retains its color and texture over time

When it comes to imaginative, design-led landscaping, resin bound surfacing offers the flexibility and visual appeal to meet even the most ambitious project briefs. This stunning private beachfront installation in Dubai is a perfect example of how the

right surface finish can elevate a space —both aesthetically and practically.

The client required a decorative, low-maintenance surface that would complement the surrounding natural environment and blend seamlessly with the existing beachfront. Comfort underfoot and a high-end, cohesive look were key priorities, along with long-term durability in a challenging coastal setting.

An 80m² area was installed using a bespoke blend of natural aggregates, carefully selected to replicate the appearance of soft, golden sand. This tailored finish created the illusion of

a continuous beach, while offering a clean, practical surface that is comfortable to walk on and easy to maintain.

To achieve the desired natural effect, the resin bound surface was extended below the waterline, delivering a smooth, uninterrupted finish right into the shoreline. The result is a seamless transition from land to sea that enhances the overall sense of tranquillity and luxury within the space.

The resin system used is UV stable, ensuring the surface retains its crisp sandy tones even under Dubai’s intense sunlight. In addition, the surface is slip-resistant and porous—allowing water to drain through naturally, making it ideal for waterfront pathways and pool surrounds.

Completed in 2020, this bespoke Dubai project showcases how resin bound surfacing can meet both practical and

This project is a testament to how resin bound surfacing can bring imaginative designs to life—blending beauty with practicality

creative demands, offering long-term performance and design freedom in one of the world’s most dynamic environments. It’s a perfect example of how Addagrip surfaces can bring bold visions to life with beauty, functionality, and durability. addagrip.co.uk

Garden designer Matthew Wilson Gardens Water feature Aquascapes Main contractor Gardenlink

Overlooking the Surrey Hills, ultra-modern newbuild Graylings sits on the South Downs. Built by Baufritz— a German company that has become renowned in Europe for manufacturing environmental and energy-efficient homes—the house has achieved Passivhaus status for its low energy consumption.

Matthew Wilson Gardens was involved in the development of the landscape from the inception of the build, ensuring the garden was an integral part of the overall completed project, with principles that matched those of the sustainable building. Low to no irrigation planting was used for the soft landscaping, for instance, as well as a limited palette of new and reclaimed materials.

The ground floor of the house is three meters below road level, where the first floor is situated as the property is cut into the steep side of a hill in the Woldingham valley. A steep sided garden of drought tolerant Mediterranean plants leads to the front door, with a circular seating area that’s paved with large, random slabs of Caithness stone.

Beneath a bridge to the front door at the rear of the property sits a small courtyard designed as a space for yoga. It’s dominated by a calming water feature and tall tree ferns underplanted with massed foliage create a rich tapestry of plants.

It’s the planted path that provides an impressive focal feature, though. Reclaimed granite curb stones are lined with swathes of vibrant creeping campanula, Alchemilla mollis (Lady’s mantle) and thyme, after which the landscape merges into wildflower meadows. Here, there are winding paths to the kitchen garden, a geodesic dome-like glasshouse, and sauna that’s clad with black larch to match the aesthetic of the house.

Graylings is undoubtedly a stylish and striking addition to the area, but one that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.

On the outskirts of Abu Dhabi lies a luxury desert oasis that makes the most of its natural surroundings. The design of the Al Wathba Resort’s outdoor spaces is inspired by the UAE’s cultural heritage, and natural materials such as stone, wood and locally sourced elements have been chosen to reflect the warm, earthy tones of the desert.

Native plants and strategically placed palms provide greenery throughout, whilst one of the most striking features of the resort is a long, linear infinity pool, from which guests have an uninterrupted, breathtaking view of the desert horizon. Nine years ago, Studio Loci was brought on board to undertake the design and construction for the redevelopment of the gardens at Hadspen House, which is now known as The Newt in Somerset, a beautiful rural retreat in the countryside and a working estate.

The team collaborated with The Newt’s landscape project co-ordinator, Katie Lewis, for three years to transform the gardens into a series of ornamental spaces. This includes the kitchen garden—from which seasonal produce is used in its eateries—a Victorian fragrance garden filled with scented plants such as violets and roses, and color gardens of various hues. There’s a bathing pond, a cascade from which rills of water run down from ponds lined with iris and an avenue known as the ‘Long Walk’ too.

At the heart of the garden is an egg-shaped area formed through a curved hornbeam hedge at the bottom,

which borders a simple lawn with a fowl house for chickens and ducks, and a parabola at the top. Here, there’s a maze of espalier apple trees and curved drystone wall terraces. There’s also a reclaimed cider press which Studio Loci remodeled as a brimming pool. Water flows to a drystone-effect water wall and drops down, disappearing below ground.

The bathing pond sits at the bottom of the hillside and is connected to the overflows of the lilypond, the cascade and the water features in the parabola maze, with all surface water from the site running into it through an extensive drainage system. Three ponds in the kitchen garden are then fed by the bathing pond.

The gardens create an idyllic escape and the perfect accompaniment to the luxury hotel and spa in South West England.

Al Jada Central Park

Inspired by the ridges of sand dunes, the design for the Al Jada Central Park features flowing, undulating forms. These create natural enclosures around each of its facilities, reducing physical barriers between them. It’s situated in Sharjah, the third most populous city in the UAE, with the vision of extending beyond its boundaries to serve as one of the city’s key public parks. There are two sections built above parking basements, which are on either side of a third and central section at ground level. Here, a full-size football court is sunken into the ground, creating elevated observation hills on each end which are integrated with adventure play areas. Football’s not the only support on offer, though, with facilities for a variety of activities. There are courts for tennis, paddle, volleyball, squash and badminton, as well as pitches for volleyball and basketball and children’s play areas.

A jogging and cycling track meanders around the park, undulating with the ridges, with designated spots along the way for fitness and relaxation. For those looking for an even greater cardio boost, there’s a running hill next to the jogging track.

Quotes and designs embedded into the landscape inspired by Sharjah bring the city’s history and culture into the new park, which has been designed as a hub for recreation, sports and education.

Jacobs managed the full design and delivery of Al Jada Central Park, from concept to tender and site supervision, in collaboration with LDPI for landscape lighting and Limah for the signage and wayfinding. The local community now has an attractive and inclusive space where there’s a plethora of possibilities.

MARTHA SCHWARTZ PARTNERS Under-I Park

Beneath Interstate 4 in downtown Orlando, new and unique spaces were created when the bridges were made higher and wider as part of the I-4 Ultimate construction project. Martha Schwartz Partners (MSP) was appointed as lead design in collaboration with AECOM to transform the 30ft-corridor between Church Street and Washington Avenue—referred to as the Under-I—into an eight-acre urban park for the community.

Their inspiration was live oaks, known for their horizontal branching structure. MSP has artistically interpreted these long-limbed trees, which are evergreen and often draped in Spanish moss, to create an immersive forest. Live oak sculptures stretch

from the ground to the undercroft and across it, and native plants will feature in areas reached by daylight. An undulating hardscape helps to create a dynamic scene, with open spaces left for public events and amenity, and AV projection to draw in crowds in the evening.

It will turn a dull and overlook passthrough that’s disconnected from its surrounding areas into an inviting and impressive landscape that creates a strong link between downtown and the underserved western neighborhoods— something that was vital for the MSP, AECOM and the city to address. The green canopy provides a new urban forest for the local community to use both day and night.

Pro Landscaper visited Boom and

Bonheur’s sites across

the Netherlands and Germany to see for itself the quality of its wide selection of trees

The nursery will be celebrating its 130th anniversary this year—and it’s got a lot to celebrate. The quality trees for which it has become known can be seen leading up to the iconic London Eye or lining the historical Straße des 17. Juni in Berlin, for instance. The nursery now spans around 660ha of open land across Germany, the Netherlands and France, with a team of more than 140 people taking care of it.

There are plans to grow further, be that expanding its reach into existing markets such as the UK and exploring new

opportunities in the Middle East, moving into new headquarters, or focusing on digitalization to move the business forward.

It was first founded in Germany by the Lappen family in 1895. What started as a small nursery gradually became bigger and bigger through generation after generation, especially under Dieter Lappen, who took over its management in 1968.

“He was the last generation here, and the company became a really big international player in those times,” says Martien Mantje, managing director of Boom & Bonheur, the Dutch arm of Baum & Bonheur. Under Dieter Lappen, the nursery’s workforce surpassed 100. But the company began to struggle financially following a downturn in the market and it fell into insolvency in 2016.

The Lappen family tried to keep the nursery

in the family, but the court appointed an administrator to manage the company.

For five years, Lappen Baumschule – as it was then known – remained for sale. That’s until it sold trees to Peter Overlack, who was leading his family company, Oqema, a chemical distributor in Germany. He’d bought the trees for his castle in France and wondered how he could get involved in the nursery. Within 14 days, it belonged to him and his siblings, Anne and Eva.

This kickstarted a new chapter for the company, and it changed its name to reflect this, becoming Baum & Bonheur in Germany and Boom & Bonheur on the Dutch side.

“Lappen in German is associated with lesser quality—which we of course are not.” So,‘bonheur’—French for ‘the good life’— was chosen because of the connection to the

French castle, and ‘baum’ is German for ‘tree’. ‘Boom’ is the same in Dutch,” explains Mantje.

A new board of directors was appointed in 2023 and a French nursery was purchased around a year ago, which has added another arm to the business. But whilst the company was looking for a fresh start under new ownership, it still wanted to hold onto the legacy of Lappen Baumschule.

“There were quite a lot of things that were precious, like the quality and the emotional connection to trees—you don't want to leave that behind with a new name. It should be part of a new journey,” says Sabine Theobald, Baum & Bonheur’s marketing and communications manager.

“Dieter Lappen was really a plantsman, and you’ll see this in the nursery. He was always looking for new assortments and shapes, and always growing everything widely space, making sure trees are transplanted every four years up to nine times. That’s still our philosophy today— to maintain that top quality,” adds Mantje.

Rather than focusing simply on customer demand, Boom & Bonheur is also looking to drive it by further promoting the products that it has, and it’s encouraging landscape architects to visit.

Boom & Bonheur grows around 2,500 species of woody plants but sells more than 20,000 species. The likes of Aralia elata iso spinosa (devil’s walking stick), Rhus typhina (stag's horn sumach), Quercus nigra (water oak) and Styphnolobium japonicum (Japanese pagoda tree) line its fields, as well as rows and rows of Metasequoia glyptostroboides (dawn redwood). Lime trees are its biggest product, and it’s one of the only nurseries to grow them this way. Using the technique of layering, the branches are carefully curved, with the middle twisted and the ends placed into the ground, all by hand, allowing young plants to develop on their own rootstock.

Under new ownership, the nursery has become more data led, which is helping it to consider the products it needs to sell in the future as well as what it thinks will inspire clients. As part of this, it’s taking into account how climate change might impact its stock.

It is taking part in research, for instance, that considers how the climate in 2085 might impact growth. “They’re creating those conditions in a glasshouse and trialling the resilience of plants in there, making

Saudi Arabia is a developing market that we should at least be trying to get into. There are huge projects going on there to drive worldwide tourism over the next few years

phenotypes and looking at whether that assortment of plants will grow well in that situation in 2085. If we have the results of that in five years, then we can start growing more of that assortment.”

In other words, Boom & Bonheur is investing heavily, both in the short- and long-term outlook for the nursery. We meet at the existing headquarters, which Theobald says has become somewhat of a “maze” after numerous renovations, with spread out offices and apartments for salespeople or seasonal workers.

Next year, it will be moving its headquarters to a listed building, though. The former manor house, Haus Caen, is surrounded by an English landscape style park

with historical trees—a fitting site for the nursery, with its name and roots. Only the logistics team and the nursery site’s management will be based on the current site. It has also set its sights on growing its foothold in the UK market. At FutureScape last year, Mantje bumped into Landform Consultants’ managing director Mark Gregory and spoke about the possibility of doing a garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. That’s when Gregory explained the concept behind The Glasshouse Collective, a carefully curated showroom of high-end outdoor living products that opened at the end of April. Boom & Bonheur are now supplying this as well as two show gardens being built by Landform Consultants at Chelsea 2025.

There are new markets it’s dipping its toe into as well, such as Saudi Arabia, where Boom & Bonheur is exhibiting at the inaugural FutureScape Global. “It started out as curiosity about what is happening in that part of the world and the possibility of sending trees there. Saudi Arabia is a developing market that we should at least be trying to get into. There are huge projects going on there to drive worldwide tourism over the next few years. Just having our name on the exhibitor list has led to people emailing us, but it’s better to meet people face to face.” It has the same approach wherever it sells its trees, encouraging people to visit the nursery to see the quality of the products themselves.

With the steps it’s taking to build more connections, as well as ensuring the longevity of its stock, and making the nursery ultimately more profitable all put Boom & Bonheur in a position to make 130 years just the start of a long history.

Omrania has been appointed to design a world-class park and green district in the capital of Saudi Arabia. It won an international design competition to serve as the lead consultant for King Salman Park, which will cover 13.3 square kilometers on the grounds of the old airport in Riyadh, making it the largest urban park in the world.

Mixed-use developments surround the central public open areas in the master plan, which integrates ecology, culture, recreation and sports amenities to create a sustainable urban district that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals and the Kingdom’s ambitions to green its largest city. Close to the city center, the new park will be served by five metro stations and 10 bus rapid transit stations and, with cultural facilities, will act as a community hub. A circular promenade will form an ‘urban loop’ for walking, cycling and autonomous public transport, with shaded rest areas

throughout, and branching valleys have been inspired by wadi landscapes.

The entire master plan—a collaboration between Omrania and Henning Larsen— promotes an active lifestyle and creates that remarkable park that takes into account climate, culture and community.

In Montenegro’s capital, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Natural History, and the Park of Culture & Arts are all being connected to each other and their surrounding biomes through the creation of a green belt.

LJ-Groups’ landscape design proposal uses native species, particularly in the botanical garden, to link the project site in Podgorica with the green oasis of the Gorica Forest and the Moraca River.

The green belt will provide a natural corridor throughout the plot, acting as a defining feature of the park, which unifies the three cultural institutions. It will enhance local ecosystems and support biodiversity, providing habitats for insects and birds – something that will be further enriched through green roofs and vertical gardens. These will also offer thermal insulation and manage rainwater runoff, which is an essential part of the project due to its close proximity to the river.

The natural wonder of the Moraca river canyon has inspired the LJ-Group’s strategy to expose the natural soils in areas where leveling is

required, which has allowed it to retain existing trees too. With connectivity to the city a central focus as well, physical barriers have been avoided to allow easy access to the site. A primary avenue links the main spaces to Ivana Crnojevica Boulevard, while transversal axes connect Vaka Ðurovica Street to the Moraca River.

Prioritizing pedestrian and bicycle pathways promotes sustainable mobility, transforming the space into a welcoming urban destination.

MENA International Landscape Masterplan

MARTHA SCHWARTZ PARTNERS

Natural systems, technology and art were brought together within the landscape of what would be the world’s first carbon negative airport in the world. Martha Schwartz Partners’ proposal for the landscape masterplan of Saudi Arabia’s MENA International Airport was designed to be a model for future development. Multiple circular integrated systems are utilized to produce ‘virtuous cycles’ and ‘feedback loops’ that maximize resources whilst minimizing waste. For it to be the first self-sufficient airport, all energy is generated on site and most water is recycled on site, and most arable food is produced there, with all waste being recycled and reused.

The site’s existing landscape—its unique geological, cultural and environmental context— determined the form, materials, textures and colors for the landscape design. There’s the iron rich reddish ‘sweet-sand’ veins which spread throughout

the Najd Plateau and the desert near Riyadh which gave rise to sculptural landforms, and the xeriscape planting inspired by the desert plant life. The aerial experience of the airport led to large-scale visual proposals, with the geometry influenced by crop irrigation circles.

For the airport to be carbon negative, the proposals considered decarbonizing solutions such as enhanced rock weathering to embed CO2 into carbonite mineral form and the use of biochar to sequester carbon.
