emand for battery-powered equipment has been growing for a few years now. It has been covered constantly within Pro Landscaper and our regular Equipment supplements, and we sometimes question whether another feature is needed on this sector of the market. But the great thing about batterypowered kit – and the reason it always earns a space – is that it’s a sector where innovations are continually being unveiled and technology continues to evolve and improve. One of the biggest barriers for businesses looking to wholly embrace battery power is whether the kit can perform as well as, or even exceed the performance of, its fossil fuelled counterparts. For Glendale, a company working towards carbon neutrality and eager to adopt eco-friendly options, this is the biggest deciding factor when purchasing its kit, machines and vehicle fleet. Where possible, it has switched to a battery or electric version; but there are gaps in the market still for manufacturers to fill.
Progress is substantial, though. Take a look at the latest offerings from Stihl, which it revealed at a press event earlier in the year. Its new 36V AP 500 S battery is its most powerful yet, meaning its new MSA 300 chainsaw which utilises this battery is the most powerful cordless chainsaw in the AP system. Then there’s Makita, whose focus is now solely on improving its greener landscape and garden machinery range, having stopped producing engine products in January. And not forgetting Husqvarna, which has invested a hefty amount into developing and enhancing its robotic mowers. It all points to manufacturers not just responding to demand but driving change (all whilst facing significant challenges, such as supply chain issues and rising costs). And whilst it’s somewhat inevitable that all users will switch entirely to battery power and electric, it’s down to the exceptional R&D teams of suppliers – and perhaps future legislation – that will determine how fast this happens. We’ll be following it every step of the way.

GLENDALE’S COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR STUART DARBYSHIRE SHARES HOW THE GREEN SERVICE PROVIDER IS OVERCOMING THE NUMEROUS CHALLENGES THE SECTOR FACES WHEN IT COMES TO ITS FLEET AND MACHINERY, BUT HOW HE AND THE COMPANY ARE STILL EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE KIT MARKET
T
he kit market is facing a number of challenges – perhaps more than ever. At the same time, it’s undergoing drastic changes, as demand for more environmentally friendly options continues to drive innovations. One company on the lookout for these greener alternatives is Glendale Managed Services (including subsidiaries Glendale Countryside and Glendale Grounds Management) – but only if these alternatives are suitable for the job, says commercial director Stuart Darbyshire. “As with any piece of machinery, the key requirement is that it does the job that you want it to do. It’s great if it ticks other boxes – cost, sustainability, health and safety – but if it doesn’t actually do the job that you need it to do then we’ll be letting down clients and it will cost us time and money too through downtime. We’ll communicate with our clients to understand their requirements; and we’ll work with them to achieve these.” Glendale has been making great strides in transitioning its kit to battery power too. In fact, it’s been working with Husqvarna for more than a decade, testing battery prototypes and providing feedback on Husqvarna’s growing battery powered range to make it more fitting for the professional market.
GEARING UP FOR CHANGE application using small, handheld kit. We’re also starting to buy larger electric pieces of kit, like ride on mowers and utility vehicles. I’ve seen
THE KEY REQUIREMENT IS THAT IT DOES THE JOB THAT YOU WANT IT TO DO. IT’S GREAT IF IT TICKS OTHER BOXES – COST, SUSTAINABILITY, HEALTH AND SAFETY – BUT IF IT DOESN’T ACTUALLY DO THE JOB THAT YOU NEED IT TO DO THEN WE’LL BE LETTING DOWN CLIENTS AND IT WILL COST US TIME AND MONEY TOO THROUGH DOWNTIME “It’s fair to say that the initial products had more of a domestic orientation, but they’re now far more robust than they used to be, and we now have a battery solution for pretty much every

these working for a number of months and years, and their performance is pretty impressive. Obviously, we do our homework and we do a lot of demonstrations to make sure that we
are buying the right pieces. But where we’ve implemented them, we’ve been really pleased.” It’s a really interesting time to be working with machinery and vehicles, says Stuart, who adds that we’re likely to see far more development over the next few years. Before, it was mostly small improvements to existing products, but battery power is “step changing” by completely changing the way these machines are powered. Vehicles are undergoing a similar transformation, with technology continually evolving for electric vehicles. There are perhaps more challenges, though, in switching entire commercial fleets over to electric. Glendale operates nationally and boasts a fleet of around 650 vehicles, the majority of which are

KIT
QUITE OFTEN, OUR CLIENTS’ BUDGETS ARE PRETTY TIGHT, SO PUTTING IN A LARGE ELECTRIC VEHICLE WOULD STRAIN THAT BUDGET. IT’S THEN WORKING WITH THE CLIENT TO HIGHLIGHT ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS IF THEY WERE TO GO ELECTRIC FOR A SPECIFIC APPLICATION TO SEE IF THEY ARE AGREEABLE OR NOT commercial, and it is increasing the amount of these which are electric as it works towards PAS 2060 certification by early 2023, having been carbon neutral since January 2021. Its company car policy has already changed to be exclusively electric; there are no petrol or diesel options available anymore. But there are a few obstacles to switching its commercial fleet as fast as Glendale would like, the biggest of which is the supply chain. A large order of small electric vans was recently cancelled by the manufacturer because they could not supply them, and this is not the only instance of this taking place. “It’s quite frustrating. Even when we have the right vehicle for the job and we’ve ordered it, we’re now having to source the
vehicles elsewhere, and it’s happened to other people in the industry too. It’s almost unheard of previously; I’ve never had vehicles cancelled on me before. There have been delays, but never that they could not physically supply them, so that’s certainly an issue.” To deal with issues in supply, not just for electric vehicles but across the board, Glendale is ordering items periodically to put itself ahead of the problem, as although it might not have had orders cancelled before the one Stuart mentions, lead times are still creeping up, and have been for a few years. Stuart says it is now typically more than a year’s lead time, which has more than doubled in the last couple of years alone. By putting in regular, small batch orders, Glendale

KIT can ensure it has stock coming in regularly which can be allocated to new contracts won or an existing contract. Then there’s the problem of suitability. Where Glendale won’t purchase battery powered kit which is not suitable for the job, it is the same story for electric vehicles. “Small vans are fine; they do the same job as conventionally fuelled vehicles and we have had no problems with those at all. But once you get to the larger vehicles – the 3.5t tippers, for example, where we have to either tow or carry around heavy plant and machinery – the electric products just aren’t suitable. We’d certainly like to have more of an electric fleet, but we can’t until it can do the job we want it to do.” On top of all this is the cost of the vehicles themselves, which typically far exceed those of their diesel or petrol counterparts. For a small van, the cost may be more, but the running costs are considerably lower and the whole life cost of the vehicle makes the initial spend worthwhile, explains Stuart. Again, once you get to the larger vehicles, it becomes more challenging. “Even though their running costs are lower, you’re not likely to get that payback over the period you have them, so the overall whole life cost of the vehicle is quite a bit more than a diesel vehicle would be. Quite often, our clients’ budgets are pretty tight, so putting in a large electric vehicle would strain that budget. It’s then working with the client to highlight any additional costs if they were to go electric for a specific application to see if they are agreeable or not.”
WE’D RATHER BE 100% CERTAIN THAT WE ARE FULLY COMPLIANT WITH THE LATEST LEGISLATION AND RUN ALL OUR MACHINES ON WHITE DIESEL. YES, THERE’S A COST IMPACT, BUT IT’S HAVING THAT KNOWLEDGE OF BEING COMPLIANT As soon as these three obstacles are overcome, Stuart says Glendale will be chomping at the bit for more electric vehicles to suit a wider range of needs. It already buys across a range of brands to ensure it is buying the best product that’s available in each category, from Fiat and Toyota to Isuzu Truck and Ford.

Similarly, with equipment and machinery, Glendale purchases from a range of suppliers, selected by comparing areas such as fuel usage, repair analysis and downtime. The company’s dedicated machinery manager Neal Harper ensures Glendale is buying the right kit for the job, putting together a large demonstration programme each year. After all, the equipment market has been relatively fast paced over the last few years. Battery power is just one of the development areas. Whilst Stuart says the manufacturers he deals with are mostly the same manufacturers he has been dealing with for the last three decades or so, the machinery itself is vastly different. It’s getting smarter, for instance; machines can feedback more information than ever to the user about their usage and their status. Technology is now available for machines to ‘self-diagnose’; coupled with this, fewer repairs are able to be done in-house, says Stuart, as many need to be plugged in with a diagnostic tool. “It’s a lot more difficult for an internal mechanic to deal with some of the issues that we find on the machines, so we’re now sending more of our repairs out to external suppliers
and dealers, which is absolutely fine, because we already have relationships with tthem; there has been a strengthening of these relationships, so that our machines can be turned around as quickly as possible. It means we also share information about the machines we have on our fleet at our depots with the local dealers so that they know which spares to stock, and they will hold some of the fast-moving stock for us.” With continuing enhancements to product ranges, their noise and vibration levels have improved to become far more user friendly, enabling them to be used for longer. This is not just battery powered products but petrol too thanks to tightening legislation, says Stuart. Conversely, adds Stuart, this does mean that the machines are somewhat less robust, or less forgiving, so the maintenance schedules have had to be adjusted to accommodate this and the machines have to be used exactly as the manufacturer intended, so operator training is key. It's not just the manufacturers which have had to change, though, due to changes in legislation. As of 1 April, the applications where red diesel can lawfully be used have reduced significantly, which largely impacts grounds
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
14/04/2022 09:11
KIT maintenance companies undertaking contracts for local authorities, for instance – golf course maintenance is not impacted, so Glendale’s Golf division can continue to use red diesel. Glendale Managed Services, however, has decided that it will now run all of its machines on white diesel. “Even if a machine was able to do a specific job which it was allowed to do with red diesel, we would still probably use that machine to undertake another task where it had to use white diesel, and it’s completely impractical to flush the tank in between operations. So, we’d rather be 100% certain that we are fully compliant with the latest legislation and run all our machines on white diesel. Yes, there’s a cost impact, but it’s having that knowledge of being compliant and knowing that we are not going to get caught and fined for using red diesel illegally.” Coincidentally, whilst legislation is coming in essentially forcing companies to purchase more white diesel, the cost of both diesel and petrol is soaring, largely due to Russia – one of the world’s largest producers of oil and gas – invading Ukraine, and Russia facing sanctions as a result. These fuel price hikes are difficult to mitigate against though because they’re “unprecedented”, says Stuart. “Often, we’re contracted into a specific
annual price to a client, and there might be some inflation or increase on that contract, but this is an unusual hike in price. It is a concern, as it’s a big cost – the fleet and machinery is our second largest cost as a business, with labour being the first, so anything that impacts that cost is obviously going to impact the bottom line, so it’s something that we will be monitoring very closely.” It's further encouragement for Glendale to continue on its journey of reducing its fossil fuel usage. Alongside making more sustainable switches with its kit, Glendale has its own contract management system – Glendale Live – which allows it to plan the most efficient routes for its fleet and therefore to reduce the company’s mileage, fuel usage and carbon footprint. “The climate emergency is not something that is going to be immediately fixed, but everybody needs to do their bit to work towards being more sustainable. Every industry needs to do that – the grounds industry is no different. It’s the number one issue really, and it will only become a bigger issue as time goes on. We want to be ahead of legislation – and that’s what we’re trying to do, to pre-empt the problems and put solutions in place before we’re told that we have to.”

Interview Stuart Darbyshire Glendale.indd 7
It's not all problem solving, though. As well as overcoming a series of obstacles, there is plenty for the grounds maintenance sector to be excited about, and the innovations in technology are probably at the top of the list. One of these is the
development in robotic mowers. Once again working with Husqvarna – which has put a heavy focus and investment in its robotic mowers and is now arguably leading the field in this area – Glendale has been implementing a number of robotic mowers, including one at Edinburgh Castle, where steep slopes can make it difficult for human operators to access. “We talked about battery power being a step change – robotics is perhaps an even bigger step change, and we really want to be at the forefront of that. So, we’re locating sites throughout the UK where we can place these robotic mowers, again working with the manufacturers to increase the applications for where they can be used. They can cut grass in areas which might be a health and safety risk to a human workforce, such as slopes or roundabouts. “We’re really keen to use robotic mowers and I think it’s something that we’ll see a lot more of, which will allow the workforce to focus on improving standards elsewhere, rather than using valuable resource time maintaining difficult areas.” Glendale is clearly keen to trial the new innovations and technologies which hit the market – but never to the detriment of the quality of work which it provides to its clients, an outlook which keeps the green service provider at top of its game while going green itself.

TOW THE LINE
TOWMATE TRAILERS NAVIGATES THE RECENT CHANGES TO RULES ON TOWING
P
reviously, the Government rules on what you could tow were different depending on the date that you passed your car driving test. However, on the 16 December 2021, the Government made a change to these rules to try and help tackle the shortage of lorry drivers. Before we get started on explaining the rules before 16 December and then what changed afterwards, here are some explanations for some of the key terms that we will be talking about: • Firstly, the maximum authorised mass (or MAM) means the weight of the vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it is being used on the road. This is also sometimes referred to as the GVW (or gross vehicle weight) or permissible maximum weight. • Secondly, the unladen weight of any vehicle is the weight of the vehicle when it is not carrying any passengers, goods, or other items. What were the rules before 16 December 2021? Before the 16 December, if you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you could tow a total load of both the car and towing vehicle of no more than 8,250kg when fully loaded. If you passed your driving test (car) before this time, it also allowed you to drive a minibus with a max load of 750kg. The vehicle used to tow the trailer could be a van or a car.
If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997 to 18 January 2013, you were allowed to drive a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg
10
TOWING A TRAILER OR OTHER PIECE OF TOWABLE EQUIPMENT REQUIRES A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF ALERTNESS AND AWARENESS AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF THE BASICS OF TOWING SAFELY IN ORDER TO KEEP YOURSELF AND OTHER ROAD USERS SAFE MAM with a combined max total of 4,250kg. You could also tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as it was no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500kg in total).
If you want to start driving a car and trailer or caravan for the first time So, what changed?
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you’re now allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM. The DVLA will update your driving license record to show that you’re allowed to tow trailers and you’ll
get the BE category added to your driving license when you next apply to get a new driving license.
Pro Landscaper / Equipment Supplement
Feature ATE.indd 10
This will be done automatically so you don’t need to contact the DVLA for this to happen. If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997 you won’t be affected by the change. If you wish to tow anything that is heavier than 3,500kg MAM you will still need to apply for the C1+E categories as before and take the necessary tests that are associated with this licence.
It’s best to take training from a qualified driving instructor. Towing a trailer or other piece of towable equipment requires a different level of alertness and awareness and it is important that you are aware of the basics of towing safely in order to keep yourself and other road users safe. The 'National standard for driving cars and light vans' tells you
about the skills, knowledge and understanding you need to tow a trailer or caravan. For more information or to visit the government website regarding these changes, please check www.gov.uk/guidance/new-rulesfor-towing-a-trailer-or-caravanwith-a-car-from-autumn-2021 ABOUT TOWMATE TRAILERS Towmate Trailers is part of the ATE Group, a company started in 1995 supplying councils and public utilities with trailers and towable equipment parts. Since then, it has expanded into manufacturing its own range of trailers – the Towmate Trailer range. Built from the ground up, the Towmate Trailer range strives to improve your towing experience, enhancing the standard package and providing innovations to make towing safer and easier. THE NEW KMA 135 R KOMBIENGINE
ON A FREEZING COLD DAY IN STAFFORD, STIHL SHOWCASED ITS LATEST LAUNCHES TO THE PRESS – AND THEY’RE SET TO MAKE AN IMPACT
BOLD IN BATTERY POWER T
his year is one of battery power for Stihl. It kicked off 2022 by announcing the launch of a series of new products powered by battery – after a range of launches and updates launched last year too. Battery power is continuing to grow significantly in popularity, both in the homeowner and the professional market, says Stihl. Its latest launches are significant, though, and arguably mark a shift in the battery power market. This is because it is launching battery-powered products comparable to petrol products in power – so they are more environmentally friendly, with lower noise pollution and lower vibrations, but without the compromise. The most impressive of these launches? The chainsaw – fittingly so,

When they need charging, users can use Stihl’s new battery charger. The AL 301-4 multi-charger is the first in Stihl’s range to hold up to four AP and AR batteries at one time, charging them consecutively and switching off automatically once the charging is complete. A built-in fan cools the batteries whilst they charge to avoid overheating and an LED display shows the charging status for each battery. Better yet, fast charging allows AP batteries to be fully charged in 90 minutes or less. It’s not just battery powered products in Stihl’s new launches. One of the products the press were eager to trial was the ADVANCE ProCom, designed to improve safety and connectivity. Whilst using the new technology, forestry and landscaping professional can have clear and high-quality communication in noisy environments. Up to 16 headsets can link automatically thanks to intercom mesh technology. It can be customised via an app, which is now one of four Stihl apps available to download – ADVANCE ProCom, iMOW, the general Stihl app and Stihl Connected. Technology for the latter has been updated too. Stihl Connected is its digital fleet management system, and the manufacturer has introduced the new Smart Connector 2A which is able to transmit increased levels of useful machine data to a user’s SMART smartphone via Bluetooth; this CONNECTOR 2A includes operating time, working speeds, and messages about the status of the machine. A real time clock enables data to be collected accurately, regardless of how often the connector syncs with a smartphone. What’s more, a traffic light system indicates the status of the machine. When pressing the button on a Smart Connector 2, a green LED light means the maintenance is up to date, yellow means there is an outstanding job, and red will show when a fault has been detected. As you can see, the team at Stihl has been working hard to respond to user demands, as well as environmental concerns. On top of the launches already mentioned, Stihl has also added
to its battery range the new BGA 300 – its first cordless backpack blower for professional users, with a blowing force of 26N. This will be available this autumn.
THE TEAM AT STIHL HAS BEEN WORKING HARD TO RESPOND TO USER DEMANDS, AS WELL AS ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS Then there’s the new brushcutters – FSA 86 R, FSA 135 and FSA 135 R – and a new cordless, long-reach hedge trimmer, the HLA 135. A new lightweight cordless pole pruner, the HTA 135, has also been added to the range, as has a new KombiEngine – the KMA 135 R.

KIT Outside of battery power, Stihl has brought to market a new and improved brushcutter, FS 561 C-EM, and has upgraded its petrol pole pruner range with the introduction of the HT 105 and HT 135. It has also announced the Stihl MS 881, which it says is the world’s most powerful seriesproduced chainsaw – it’s 19% more powerful than the MS 661 and the only saw in the Stihl range to drive a 0.404 pitch chain. Continuing its reputation as one of the leading chainsaw manufacturers on the market, it has also created a new cutting system – the Rapid Hexa. Hexa consists of a patented hexagonal file and a full chisel chain with a unique V shaped side plate, resulting in a chain that cuts up to 10% faster than standard RS chain, is easier to sharpen, and stays sharper for longer. It achieves the latter with a 60⁰ side plate angle formed by the Hexa file, as well as other improvements to the tooth’s geometry. A narrow kerf top plate enables the faster cutting performance and a 25⁰ sharpening angle makes the chain better suited to diagonal

MEET THE SUPPLIER: MAKITA MAKITA THINKS GREEN IN ITS 50TH YEAR OF BUSINESS IN THE UK AND CORDLESS MACHINERY TAKES THE WHEEL
M
akita has been a part of the landscaping-equipment manufacturing industry since 1972, at its first UK location, after traversing the globe from Japan, China, Europe and the USA. Amongst this international success, Makita has always kept "working green" in mind when creating new products and ways of working, and after having created some of the first cordless tools for the landscaping industry, it has continued its green ethos through to present day.
With celebrating its 50th year in the business, Makita UK continues its work with cordless equipment and broaden the already-available range of cordless equipment as the move away from petrol and fossil fuelled appliances takes greater foothold around the world – something that Makita has been a pioneer and cheerleader for since the beginning. As the pandemic struck, Makita moved its employees online and to remote working which appears to have taken root, and as that continues
IT'S NOW THE DECISION TO COMPLETELY MOVE AWAY FROM MANUFACTURING ENGINE POWERED MACHINES AND THIS IS A MASSIVE STEP FOR MAKITA AND THE INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE

new and forward-thinking ideas have come to fruition to ensure new products and technologies could still be brought to the landscaping sector. Makita says this draws focus to the types of products it's creating and the technology it's

KIT developing; it's all about quality, no matter where in the world it manufactures – be it in Japan, the US, China, or the UK. "Every factory has the same exacting standards. So everybody works to the same processes and the same quality control processes to ensure that the standard of the product is the same, no matter where we manufacture," Makita states. The company also says: "Being able to produce, manufacture and ship from a central hub in each country means that we are the only power tool manufacturer to still manufacture products in the UK at our 'Makita Manufacturing Europe' plant in Telford. Our MME factory supplies a lot of products to our European subsidiaries and we are proud of that, as well as the fact that we are a UK manufacturer still. We believe you'll see a lot more of that with the current climate and the global situation. "We are actually moving production of certain products back into Telford to improve the supply chain where, obviously, there's been a lot of difficulties with shipping from China and other parts of the world. So, that's another investment into the UK market that the corporation is making." With the Union Jack effectively stamped onto the British produced Makita product, Makita makes a statement for proudly serving the UK market for many years. "Some of this success is believed to be a product of our continued growth and product development, as we also manufacture both power tools for hard landscaping and garden machinery products for soft landscaping." Amongst a vast equipment catalogue, Makita has made improvements to the development of greener tools as well as garden machinery. However, as of January this year, the corporation globally has stopped manufacturing engine products.

MAKITA HAVE A PEDIGREE AND A TRADITION OF MANUFACTURING CORDLESS PRODUCTS AND DEVELOPING BATTERY AND CHARGING TECHNOLOGIES. SO, WITH THE WORLD MOVING TO CORDLESS, THAT GIVES US A BIT AN ADVANTAGE Makita understands and cultivates the continued need for engine-fuel alternatives and says it is going down the cordless route, as the cordless garden machinery has been
a huge focus for it over the past five years. But, even more so now, while it is ceasing the production of petrol engine machines and fossil fuel machines it will still offer them for a period as they are still "on the shelf" – but the company's focus is the research and development of improving cordless garden machinery. The aim for cordless is a driving force and focus for Makita on the turn of its 50th birthday. It says: "Right across all tools, even power tools, we're aiming to have a truly cordless job site and product range, where even the mains powered 110v/240v products will have a cordless equivalent. If we could manufacture the same kind of machine with a similar or better performance in a cordless model, then that's where the development has been focused.
"With cabled machines there are trip hazards on site, and you have the restrictions of where you can use them in certain instances." Another aim for Makita is to get closer to the market: "That's a major thing – getting local to the market. Where each of our four UK regional FSC centres are not just for repairing machines, they are also training centres. Each FSC has training facilities, so our products can be delivered safely and help customers across the UK – we’re very much focused on that." After manufacturing garden machinery for over 30 years, Makita has a pedigree and a tradition of creating cordless products and developing battery and charging technologies. So, with the world moving towards cordless, it gives the company an advantage – with a plethora of knowledge on cordless power tools as well as how to work with battery technologies. With Makita's strong focus on being green, the company was previously able to introduce a four-stroke engine with lower emissions and lower noise levels, and now it's time for cleaner cordless development. This way, you have less workplace contamination from fuel mixes, improved noise and vibration levels, and zero emissions. Makita says: "This is a step we had to take with our decision to completely move away from manufacturing engine-powered machines, and this is a massive step for Makita and the industry as a whole."

MOW, MOW, MOW A RIDE-ON MOWER FROM ISEKI PROVED THE PERFECT MACHINE FOR MOWING AROUND CHRISTMAS TREES AT RASELL’S NURSERIES
W
hen running a nursery and growing so many different types of plants, one of the challenges is keeping the grassed areas under control in tight areas; in particular, one tricky place was the areas between the Christmas trees. With this is mind, Tim Rasell of Rasell’s Nursery – a hardy stock nursery and garden centre based near Grantham – got in touch with his local ISEKI dealer Chandlers (FE) Ltd. Tim Rasell explains further: “We needed a machine that would be multipurpose and be able to carry
out the specific task of mowing between rows of Christmas trees. After speaking with Les Butters from Chandlers (FE) Ltd, he suggested a demonstration of the SXG323+ ride-on mower. “It was very manoeuvrable; you can tell it’s sturdy, built well and very easy to use. We purchased it in September 2021, and it has performed really well so far. “We have been dealing with Les Butters from Chandlers for over 30 years, and in today’s busy world we need to be assured that the product support is there if required;

they have always been very good.” Because of the large capacity, low revving 19hp diesel engine, the SXG323+ creates very little vibration, low noise output and very little wear and tear on the engine itself whilst also being fuel efficient. Simple hydrostatic two-pedal control ensures it is easy to drive. Disposing of grass clippings can be done with either a low or high tip 520L collector up to a height of 1.97m that allows for
tipping into a trailer or a skip if required. Following a few months' use, Tim concludes: “Having used competitor brands previously, we have found the Iseki product good value for money and versatile in the applications we purchased it for. A very capable, quality machine."

CARING FOR YOUR LANDSCAPING EQUIPMENT TOP TIPS
IN LANDSCAPING, PRODUCTIVITY IS IMPORTANT, WHICH IS WHY CHOOSING AND MAINTAINING THE CORRECT EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR LEVEL OF WORK IS A CRUCIAL PART OF THE JOB. TO HELP YOU WORK EFFECTIVELY AND SAFELY, THE EXPERTS AT HUSQVARNA HAVE SHARED THEIR FIVE TOP TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR KEY PIECES OF EQUIPMENT, TO HELP BOTH THE PRODUCT AND YOU PERFORM AT YOUR BEST.
1
Keep them clean Great work is often followed by a big clean up. Before and after any job, you should make sure that your handheld tools including your trimmers, brushcutters, chainsaws, and leaf blowers are all clean and free of grass or debris to ensure they can work to their full potential and to avoid any lasting damage to the machine.
Look after your bars and blades At Husqvarna, we find most chainsaw guide bar problems are often related to incorrect chain tensioning, poor lubrication, or faulty working techniques. When this is the case, the area exposed to most wear
2
www.prolandscapermagazine.com
Advertorial Husqvarna.indd 23
is the underside of the chainsaw bars, where most of the cutting is done. However, there are simple practices you can do to avoid any unnecessary problems and to keep your guide bar in good shape. This includes turning the guide bar every time the chain is changed so that it will wear evenly, cleaning the guide bar groove and oil inlet regularly, and filing away burrs from the bar rails. When it comes to other tools such as trimmers and brushcutters, it’s important to keep your grass blades sharp and maintained. If sharpening the blades yourself, you should always sharpen them in a straightforward motion and regularly turn the blade to make sure that each area receives even coverage.
3
Consider your product storage Now that spring is here, many of your tools will be coming out of their winter hibernation. To get them performing at their very best
throughout the season, they need to have been cleaned, stored and serviced properly. The extra few minutes you put in over the winter makes all the difference when the season comes around. A professional trick for grass trimmer services is to remove the trimmer line and let it soak in fresh water during the winter. By doing so it will maintain its flexibility, handle more strain and last longer. Look after your battery If you’ve opted for a batterypowered product, it’s important that you take care of the battery to get the most out of its performance and run time. At the end of each day, you should make sure that your batteries are always stored in a dry area between 5°C to 25°C, and for longer service life, stored at 50% charged.
4
Stay protected It’s not just your equipment which needs looking after for a successful working day. Your protective clothes are regularly
5
exposed to sweat and oil substances which may reach the protection layer and reduce its function. Wash your clothing regularly and in accordance with their labelling. If heavily soiled, wash your clothes as soon as possible after use. In addition to keeping your clothes clean, check for heavily worn areas and damage or tears in the fabric. The clothes’ protective functions may be seriously reduced if repairs are not carried out properly. Husqvarna offers an extensive selection of battery and petrolpowered products to meet the needs of all professional landscapers. With a growing portfolio of battery tools, Husqvarna is able to manufacture robust battery products, providing high power and performance with extra user benefits such as lighter and more comfortable designs, minimum noise pollution, and reduced impact on the planet.
