BRANCHING OUT To create a design for the new HCAD building, the concept revolved around the idea of creating a variety of spaces, allowing each person to find a space they are most comfortable to design in. The bonsai tree was used as a reference for the form of the building and the concept. Like different branches of a tree, different people are taking different paths and classes but arrive at the same end goal: Architecture. The sun and wind were considered as well to create a natural and stimulating indoor environment.

URBAN OASIS This studio was tasked with designing a public theater that integrates with its community through gathering, education, and social areas; locating above the Grove St PATH Station in Jersey City, NJ. After initially viewing the site, there’s a theme of grey sidewalks and cars.

Therefore, this design incorporated greenery and water to create an escape from the bustling urban city. The building is formed of three concrete rings teetering on each other, supported by structural glass. The white concrete creates a sense of purity and monumentality in this park. Inside is a continuous ramp starting from the underground PATH entrance and continuing until the roof. The elevation of each indoor space is based on the level of a landing on the ramp next to it.

LANDSCAPE BECOMES BUILDING Liberty State Park, located in New Jersey, has been long neglected in regards to its natural beauty and purpose, despite having the Statue of Liberty and New York City as beautiful surrounding views. The purpose of a park is to provide an escape from the manmade cities and busy life, and allow visitors to become one with nature for a period of time. In order to enhance the park and allow it to reach its fullest potential, this three part structure integrates itself into the landscape, creating the appearance of a building growing out of the land. It blends into the environment so it doesn’t hinder the park’s natural beauty, makes one feel as if they are outside when they walk through the interior, but also engage and educate those visitng, and function as an office space for those working in the park.

Educational Space About the Environment and Relaxation Space 2100 sqft

Educational Space About History of the Statue of Liberty and the immigrants’ journey (2200 sqft)

This structure acts as a space where people can rest and seek refuge from the sun.

Here the public will find informative panels on the sides of the building which talk about climate change. They go into detail about the danger of rising sea levels, various methods of renewable energy the building uses, and what the public can do to help. There will be additional panels mentioning the various flora and fauna that is found in the park. They will contain facts about each species and maps of where they can be found in the park, such as optimal bird watching spots.

A spiral ramp with information boards on the sides takes visitors through the building while also giving them historical facts. These boards can contain, images, videos, audios, first person narratives of immigrants, and hands on digital activities. This engages and teachers visitors the importance of Liberty State Park and what it represents.

Educational Space About the Lenape Native American Tribe (1300 sqft) This will be a space with little light, mimicking the solemn history of the Lenape Tribe and how they were forced off of the land they used to live on.

This brings to light an unhappy part of America’s history that each person should know.

Public Restrooms (303 sqft)

BELOW GROUND BUILDING (PRIVATE) Administrative Offices 1700 sqft Shared meeting space: 1000 sqft Park Superintendent office: 400 sqft Two assistant offices: 300 sqft Although this building is underground with no direct apertures to the outside, the employees will still feel like they are part of the environment because of the roots of trees and smaller plants poking through the ground and building, and special apertures showing the soil and species in the soil living around them.

SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

LIBERTY STATE PARK PAVILION This project explored a variety of spatial relationships that can accomodated large and small groups by reinvisioning the Gateway Pavilion at Liberty State Park. The designed pavilion symbolizes the story of millions of immigrants coming to America in seek of new beginnings and freedom from persecution. Based off of the Q-tip spiral, the end product was a set of two different sized arches made from bending the elongated spiral vertically and horizontally.

AFFECT DIAGRAM

MATERIAL SYSTEMS Q-TIP SPIRAL A study of a variety of materials was conducted and analyzed for their performance, affect, and behavior. This model includes an experimentation with how the shape of q-tips can be changed, such as bending them and stacking. By altering the q-tips and exploring how this new form can be combined with itself, a unique pattern is formed, creating a spiral behavior and demonstrating affect.

MATERIAL SYSTEMS TOOTHPICK CAVE This model involves the exploration of different ways that toothpicks can fuse together.

During the process of creating it, the toothpicks’ behavior naturally curves into a unique, cave like form. The use of creating Xs with the toothpicks before putting the model demonstrates affect in the shadows.
