Reflecting on the past 10 years and looking forward to the future of our local charity, the real heroes of our mission, our students, have been the inspiration for our new name. Their commitment and courage to “tackle each day” with a smile despite the hardships they face have shown us how resilient they are. 10 years and 10 MHFK graduates later, they are all “rockstars”. They have defied the odds and have shown us how GOD can truly use our past to shape our future. And as we continue to celebrate our tremendous success and momentum, we begin a new chapter with a new commitment and renewed vision to inspire future growth as we continue to “serve up hope” to all the little “rockstars” in our community.

Cheers to our fourth year! GRATEFUL AS EVER TO BE HERE IN HARDIN COUNTY. Much appreciation to all of our readers, followers, advertisers, event sponsors, and everyone in the community for your show of support. We wouldn’t be here without you. We are blessed to have the support of the community as we press on in pursuit of highlighting the best our region has to offer in upcoming issues of Elizabethtown Lifestyle Magazine.

In case you didn’t notice, the holiday issue is festively glorious and my favorite issue of the year, considering I love cold weather and everything holiday-related from Halloween and Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Years. The cover feature is There’s No Place Like Helm for the Holidays giving us a glimpse of the residential side of The House On Helm furnished with decor from everyone’s favorite FINE House & Garden and a gorgeous modern tree from Elizabethtown Florist. As with the last issue, we have spotlights on local events, like the ARGI ribbon cutting plus large event features for Birdies & Burgers for DSAH and the ECTC Black Ties & Better Lives Gala. Place Setting Perfection is right up my alley guiding you to fabulous flatware placement at every meal. As always, we highlight Baptist Health and this time we’ve worked to include fun recipes great for seasonal gatherings. If going out is more your style, head out shopping and stop into BBT for a collection of fall-winter cocktail concoctions sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy. Nostalgia comes to mind when we think about 2 Decade Arcade, a delightful downtown hangout that I promise will bring back the best memories. Project L.E.A.R.N just came across our radar with the help of Will Harris Homes, and we have a feature dedicated to the cause with information on an upcoming fundraiser in 2023.

Our mission at Elizabethtown Lifestyle is to connect citizens of Hardin County to local businesses through a curated collection of features and articles in our print publication and blog, up-to-date social media, and featuring and hosting community events. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for news on upcoming events. Please tag us online when you’re out supporting local businesses of all kinds: Use our hashtag #ElizabethtownLifestyle, and we might just share your posts. Happy Holidays Elizabethtown!

We love a story.

In fact, science tells us our minds crave them; there is neurobiological “hard-wiring” in our brains that creates stories and attempts to make some sense of the world around us. We listen to ballads that tell stories of love or of broken hearts. We read fairy tales that transport little ones (and their parents, too) through stories of magic worlds. We watch movies or plays to suspend our disbelief and believe their stories are our reality, at least for the next hour and a half in the theater.

For most of us, the busy stream of holiday-filled days between the turn of November and the New Year are probably more story-filled than any other throughout the year. While traditions technically require years of repetition to live up to their title, a blink-and-you-missed-it moment at Christmas Eve dinner might lead to a story that instantly proves more memorable than decades-old routines—and may outlive them, too.

The House on Helm is central Kentucky’s preeminent elevated event venue for gathering to celebrate life’s joys and milestones. The exterior façade pays homage to its original establishment, while the interior reflects an updated canvas that marries elegant and eclectic into a sophisticated palette that welcomes all guests. Whether it is for a wedding, a birthday, a corporate event or your next holiday gathering, The House on Helm welcomes you and your guests home to relish in the magic of making lasting memories in a space exquisitely and thoughtfully designed for your every need.

33
34

In design and in preparing a home for the holidays, story can take many forms. It can be the family history behind a quirky ornament from a vacation years ago, or it could be the color story that ties everything together.

This simple holiday vignette at The House on Helm mixes both of these to create a space where one would be happy to exchange gifts or enjoy breakfast on Christmas morning. The space has story and character and celebrates both the history of the original home and the many future events that will occur here. This imagery also pulls from the storied, collected look of product at FINE to assemble a palette of holiday decorations and custom furniture based on simple, natural shapes and textures.

Near the tree, the cool blues and muted greens of the custom upholstery and accompanying pillows echo back to the kitchen’s unique island and the detailed, gradient tile work of the bar. Woven baskets and trays (and even a lamp) help pull in the space’s warmer tones, like the kitchen’s incredible exposed brick or the brass elements of its statement French range.

These understated base colors leave room for the usual reds and greens of your favorite family (or new) Christmas decor, meaning there is always flexibility to incorporate the expected and the unexpected. After all, the best stories usually come with a twist at the end.

What I love most about being a mortgage lender with South Central Bank is being able to help people reach their dream of homeownership. One of the most gratifying experiences I have had was helping a client that had been overseas and had their identity stolen. We worked as a team to get it cleared, and he was able to purchase his dream home. Connecting with people and seeing them so excited to move into their new homes is what makes this job so special. When I began my career, I worked in lending for years. One day, a previous coworker told me I needed to work for a local bank. I started out processing loans for South Central Bank and have never looked back. I worked my way into mortgage lending and am so grateful every day to work with families in Hardin County.

I’ve always loved children’s books and dreamed of writing one someday. Like most dreams, you don’t usually act on them, but God nudged me to try it and kept nudging me until I got my first book, Boone, published in 2019. It all fell into place the way things do when you let God pave the way. I’d heard the stories of how hard it was to get published, but after simply requesting an information packet online at Christian Faith Publishing, a lady called me. I was a bit embarrassed and feeling very underqualified. I told her I didn’t know if the book was ready or that they’d be interested in it. She asked me what it was about, so I began explaining how my dog, Boone, was dumped in my parent’s neighborhood three days before Christmas. He showed up at their backdoor five minutes after I had prayed to God to help heal my broken heart after losing my dog, Scooter, a month prior. I prayed He’d send me a dog who needed me when the timing was right. Imagine my surprise, minutes after I prayed that prayer, when my mom texted me a picture of this shaggy, pitiful looking puppy, stating “Look who just showed up at my house!”

Well, it just so happened that the lady from CFP fosters animals and had five rescue dogs at her feet as we were speaking. She explained how the books go to a review board, and it was a process that could take weeks or even months. If they liked it, they would make suggestions and go back and forth with the writer until they felt it was something they’d publish. I thought, “I won’t hold my breath.” She ended up submitting it for me personally, and it was approved immediately.

My second book, Winnie, was published in 2021. Both books are based on true rescue stories. Winnie is my calico cat that we adopted from the Hardin County Animal shelter in July 2016. I like to use my stories to teach kids about love, kindness, and acceptance, something the world needs desperately. I am in the process of working on my 3rd book, another Boone and Winnie story! They are my muses, and God is my driving force.

Boone and Winnie are available online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble plus available as eBooks on iTunes, Kindle and Nook.

“For unto us a child is born.”

The familiar words of Isaiah echo from over 40 voices as the Elizabethtown Choral Society rehearses Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Jonathan Wilkes. The choir has begun its fifth season, with members representing a range of ages, including professional vocalists, retired music educators, church leaders, and those who just love music as a hobby.

“ECS provides an opportunity for talented singers to collaborate and learn challenging music. Professional quality choirs are not typically going to be found beyond cultural hubs and college towns, but we are determined to recreate that experience,” co-founder and accompanist, Julienne Wilkes said.

The group has doubled in size from 20 participants in the spring concert – a testament to how Messiah remains a well-loved Christmas tradition – and a string ensemble will add authenticity to the rigorous, Baroque style of Handel’s masterpiece.

The concert will be held on December 4th at Memorial United Methodist Church. For more information/tickets, visit Elizabethtown Choral Society on Facebook.

This spring, ARGI, a regional financial advisory firm, announced the expansion of its Elizabethtown office to 310 Ring Road. Since opening its doors in Elizabethtown, the branch has grown its client base, extended its staff, and merged with Stiles, Carter, & Associates, PSC. ARGI’s growth mindset and dedication to client service have provided the firm with more opportunities to be a resource for clients and the community. The 24,000 square foot office space features an industrial design concept with a deliberate focus on open floor plans and communal areas for employee and client connection. ARGI staff, clients, and community leaders joined together for an open house to celebrate the newly renovated location.

PlaceSetting Perfection

Setting your table for fall gatherings has never been more exciting. Giselle Smith here, doing what I really do best: Setting tables and designing florals to bring a bit of inspiration to hosts and hostesses throughout Hardin County. There are so many fun pieces on the market to make your place settings pop. With this quick feature, we’ve included a diagram for standard place settings, although I usually go against the grain and like to mix in cool glassware and lots of textures.

61

Primary pieces to include in your dinner party arsenal include dinner plates, salad plates, soup bowls, and water goblets or glasses. Basic flatware sets include a dinner fork, salad fork, dessert spoon, dinner knife, and soup spoon. If possible order additional salad forks to serve as dessert forks or mix in a unique fork to utilize when serving dessert. Here we paired hammered copper metal soup bowls with our plates for a shiny focal piece.

Napkins, napkin rings, and placemats are easily interchanged for a different look at various gatherings throughout the season. Adding in a pattern for a cozy or romantic vibe, we bring in taper candles to set the mood. I’m never one to pass up a chance for whimsical details; for this fall tabletop I picked out new pumpkin dishes perfect for dips and sauces, twisted taper candles, and handmade wooden mushrooms to tie in with our woody cabin vibe. The service bell was a cute addition we’ll hear for years to come. In place of a traditional salt shaker, we filled a small textured bowl + spoon combo with kosher salt.

Florals shown were picked at Color Me Mod Flower Farm. You can find Lisa on social media or meet up in person every Saturday at the Hardin County Farmer’s Market. Using locally-grown florals will add a much-needed natural element to any tablescape tying the season.

LOVE GALA FOR PROJECT L.E.A.R.N. FEBRUARY

Nestled across from the Elizabethtown Police Station in between Flywheel Brewing and the Brown Funeral Home sits Project L.E.A.R.N. The archaic building is in need of renovations but is overflowing with love. If you’re like me, you’d never heard about Project L.E.A.R.N. until now.

There are so many school programs for disabled and handicapped children, but once they graduate from high school, the community offers little outside of Project L.E.A.R.N. This is such an important cause here in Hardin County. Some clients attend Project L.E.A.R.N. from the time they leave high school until they pass. Activities for clients include art projects, games, exercises with bikes and basketballs, and movie days complete with popcorn. Project L.E.A.R.N. has a Halloween dance and party, chili supper at the end of October, a Christmas party, and even Santa Claus. The staff focus on individual abilities to choose the best activities for each client.

Patty McAnly is the Program Coordinator and has been with Project L.E.A.R.N. for 25 years. She has worked with her sister Lisa at the facility for the past 16 years; their sister Donna attended Project L.E.A.R.N. as a client before she passed away in September 2018. President of the Board of Directors Ann Borders’ granddaughter Katelin attends Project L.E.A.R.N.; when clients age out of high school at 21, Project L.E.A.R.N. has a place for them. Ann’s granddaughter was referred to Project L.E.A.R.N. by Central Hardin High School when she graduated. The nonprofit currently cares for eight full-time clients and seven part-time clients. Clients’ families pay a minimal fee to help cover the cost of care, $320 per month for full-time and $160 per month for part-time care.

Operating expenses are funded in full by donations. State funding helped the cause for over 20 years, but in 2018 funding dramatically decreased and was completely cut for the Project L.E.A.R.N. program. They lost $100,000 per year in state funding just before Covid. They’re trying to make this up through local donations. Hiring staff is a challenge because of limited funds, and members of the community are needed to volunteer. There is a volunteer form to fill out to get started.

The new patio and entrance were donated by Will Harris Homes this past year to have a nice outdoor space to get outside. Severn’s Valley Baptist is painting the building at the end of October. The Kentucky Colonels Organization just did some landscaping, porch painting, and maintenance. Ann is working on a memory garden for clients who have passed, complete with a mural donated by a local artist. Still, there is so much work left to be done.

We were invited to visit Project L.E.A.R.N. with the Will Harris team. There’s an overwhelming feeling of love from the moment you walk in the door. While the clients are mentally and physically disabled adults, each client is happy with their place at Project L.E.A.R.N. You can tell they’re so well taken care of, and there is such a deep-seated sense of love. There is no way to visit Project L.E.A.R.N. and not feel moved to act or give. Over the next few months, we are bringing awareness to their cause and on February 11, 2023, Elizabethtown Lifestyle is partnering with The Lincoln Trail Home Builders Association to host a Valentine’s event at Phillips Grove Event Venue. We hope you can join us and show some love for Project L.E.A.R.N. Tickets and sponsorships are available online now on EventBrite.

In August, Jeff and Mary Key hosted Friends of Hardin County Animal Shelter’s Dirty Dog Bash at their Glendale farm. This annual fundraiser is vital to the success of FOHCAS’ mission to support the Hardin County Animal Shelter. The event brought in over $28,000 before expenses. That money will go directly to efforts to care for homeless animals such as the FOHCAS medical fund, “return-to-field” cat program, rescue transport and the full time shelter vet for the Hardin County Animal Shelter. The event includes a dinner, live entertainment, a bourbon pull and a silent auction. Photos by Clagett Photography.

On September 10, 2022, the ECTC Foundation partnered with Elizabethtown Lifestyle and The House On Helm to bring to life a first-of-its-kind black tie event for Hardin County. All proceeds from the Black Ties & Better Lives Gala benefitted the ECTC Foundation raising nearly $50,000. The formal event included an eight course dinner prepared by the ECTC Culinary Arts Department and drink pairings, plus live music and an auction.

WORDS FROM EXECUTIVE

As beautiful as the gala was, the purpose behind it was even more meaningful. Hearing from a student who overcame barriers through the support of ECTC and our partners at Family Scholar House reminded us of the important role our community plays in student success. Together we can prevent life’s challenges from getting in the way of education, which not only breaks cycles of poverty, but creates new cycles of achievement.

Thank you to all our sponsors and guests for believing in our mission and providing the resources for us to help even more students! To learn how you can get involved, visit ectcforbetterlives.com.

It’s always a good time to get involved; success always takes help. By drawing closer to one another, we are creating community that we can all be proud to call home.

A Bright Leadership

Baptist Health Foundation Hardin recently recognized former Board Chair Joe Prather and celebrated progress on the construction of its new Outpatient Medical Pavilion at a gathering of foundation donors and special guests.

Approximately 150 people attended the event, which was held August 11 at The House on Helm in Elizabethtown, and was the venue’s first corporate event since officially opening in spring 2022.

Dennis Johnson offered an update on the new 282,000-square-foot Outpatient Medical Pavilion that is currently under construction behind the existing hospital on North Dixie Avenue. The facility, scheduled for completion in 2024, will be home to a new cancer center, medical office building, and surgical suites.

Attendees also learned how their families and businesses can partner with the foundation to provide enhancements to the pavilion that will improve patients’ comfort and overall experience. New medical equipment, as well as special amenities and features such as visual art and slushie machines, will add to patients’ comfort and relaxation during their visits.

The foundation also recognized former Board Chair Joe Prather who has transitioned to chair emeritus after eight years leading the board. During his tenure, the foundation raised more than $8 million to enhance healthcare in central Kentucky, or as Joe once stated, “…provided icing to the cake.”

As Chair Emeritus, Prather will continue to provide insight and leadership to the board of directors.

Baptist Health Hardin chef Chase Jackson and his team created the menu for the event. Chef Jackson shared his recipes in hopes of inspiring readers to incorporate these favorites into upcoming events.

Couscous Salad Shooters

Couscous Salad Shooters are a healthy and fun way to incorporate hearty grains, healthy vegetables and delicious flavors in an appetizer, side dish, and salad. The recipe offers the flexibility you need to incorporate the produce you have on hand.

Recipe: Prep Time: 20 Minutes Cook Time: 30 Minutes Yield: 24 Servings

INGREDIENTS

• 3 Cups of Couscous

• 2 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

• 1 Tomato Petite Diced

• 1 English Cucumber Seeded and Petite Diced

• 1 Cup of Shredded Carrot

• ½ Red Onion Small Diced

• 1 Red Bell Pepper Small Diced

• 1 Yellow Bell Pepper Small Diced

• ¼ Cup Fresh Mint Minced

• ¼ Fresh Parsley Minced

• 2 Lemon Zested and Juiced

• 5 Cloves Fresh Garlic Minced

• 1 Cup of Golden Raisins

• Micro Red Amaranth for Garnish

• 1 Cup of Feta Cheese Crumbles

• ¼ Cup of Red Wine Vinegar

• 1/3 Cup of Honey

• 2/3 Cup of Olive Oil

• 2 Tbsp. Salt

• 2 Tsp Pepper

• ½ Cup Italian Salad Dressing

• 2 Tsp Onion Powder

• 2 Tsp Garlic Powder

Cook the couscous with the extra virgin olive oil and one tbsp of salt (per the instructions on the package). Once cooked, shock the couscous in cool water and drain well. Drizzle a little oil and toss so it doesn’t stick to itself in clumps. Refrigerate while we assemble the remaining ingredients. Combine the tomato, peppers, carrot, onion, lemon zest (save the lemons), garlic, raisins, feta, salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. Thoroughly combine. In another bowl whisk together the following ingredients—red wine vinegar, honey, olive oil, Italian dressing, the juice from the zested lemons, parsley and mint. Remove the couscous from the refrigerator and add the wet ingredients. Once the wet ingredients are mixed, add the vegetable mixture. Once thoroughly combined, cool until service. Serve in petite disposable shooters with a tiny spoon. Garnish with micro red amaranth. Enjoy.

Harissa Chicken Skewers with Cool Yogurt Sauce and Fried Mint

The Harissa Chicken Skewers offer partygoers with smoky flavors enhanced by the cool yogurt sauce. Appropriate as an appetizer on skewers, it could also be a new chicken recipe for your weekly dinner.

Recipe:

Prep Time: 20 Minutes

Cook Time: 35 Minutes

Yields: 24 Skewers

INGREDIENTS

• 8 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Thighs

• Bamboo Skewers (soaked in Water)

• 3 Whole Roasted Red Bell Peppers (Store bought or Roasted on the Grill)

• 6 Fresno Chilies (less chilies if you’re not wanting the full heat)

• 3 Bird’s Eye Chilies

• 6 Cloves of Fresh Garlic (peeled)

• 1 Lemon, juiced

• 1Tsp salt

• 1 Tsp Coriander

• 1 Tsp Cumin

• 1 Shallot (peeled)

• 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

• 1 Cup of Vegetable oil for Frying Mint leaf

• Fresh Mint for Garnish

FOR THE COOL YOGURT SAUCE

• 1 Cup Greek Yogurt

• 1 Cup of Harissa Paste

• 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice

• 2 Tbsp Fresh Mint, Finely Chopped

• Pinch of Salt and Pepper

Clean the roasted red peppers and dice into small pieces. Clean the chilies and mince them. Discard the seeds and membrane. Place diced peppers and chilies into blender. Pulse a few times, then add the garlic, lemon juice, salt, coriander, cumin, shallot and olive oil. Blend into a smooth paste. Set a cup of the marinade aside for the cool yogurt sauce. The remainder of the marinade is ready to be tossed onto our boneless chicken thighs. Spoon out enough marinate to coat the chicken. Marinate for 30-90 minutes. This marinade with last up to a week in the fridge if you top the jar with a little olive oil. While the chicken marinates, we can turn our attention to the cool yogurt sauce. Combine in a clean bowl the cup of harissa paste, yogurt, lemon juice, mint, salt and pepper. Refrigerate for now. Cut each thigh into 3 thick strips and skewer through the chicken long ways. Once the chicken is ready, get the grill screaming hot. Sear the chicken for 2 minutes, turn it and give it another 2 minutes. Flip it and cook it for another additional 4 minutes. After 8 minutes temp the thickest part of the chicken thigh, make sure it reaches 165 F°. Remove from the grill. In vegetable oil fry the fresh mint leaves at 350°. Fry for only 15 seconds. Set on a paper towel and allow them to cool. Crumble the fried mint on top of the Harissa chicken skewer for garnish and dip into the cool yogurt sauce. Enjoy.

3 DECADE ARCADE

The Watkins family was destined to own a classic arcade; coincidentally, their trip to Destin, FL, in April 2021 gave them the push they didn’t realize they needed that changed the course of their future. Beth, Justin, and Tyler Watkins shared an interest in retro arcade games that went back to their childhood. Naturally, while on their 2021 vacation in Destin, they were on the hunt for an arcade that provided the old classics they grew up playing. Unfortunately, there were none to be found.

The lack of arcades they were looking for prompted them to brainstorm the entire 9-hour drive back to Kentucky on how to open their Arcade. The ideas flowed naturally; within that drive, they came up with 3 Decade Arcade.

Justin, Tyler, and their mother, Beth, set out to find a downtown location so their business would be a part of the community and revitalization process. They eventually settled on the space located at 109 S. Main Street in Suite 103, signing immediately on the lease after seeing the space in July 2021. It was a blank canvas with white walls and floors. The family worked full-time jobs while they designed and set up the Arcade. They stayed committed and began ordering games in August.

It was important to them to build a good foundation for their retro Arcade. Their goal was to bring back the classic games people have fallen in love with for decades. With Covid issues, unfortunately, supply was hard to find. It would take 4-5 months for some of the newer games to be built, which was a big hurdle due to time constraints. Each time a game would be delivered, it felt like Christmas.

The Watkins family was committed to including the community as they built, stocked, and decorated. Local retro arcade game enthusiasts sold their items, and Beth Watkins even used her childhood belongings to decorate. Justin and Tyler are still adding more games and decor and know that having the ability to use their family heirlooms is incredibly special.

On October 22, 2021, 3 Decade Arcade was officially open to the public. “It was one of those surreal moments of realizing this was it. It was meant to happen,” said Tyler. “Everyone loved the aesthetic and nostalgia.”

103

The Arcade offers pinball and stand up arcade games, pool tables, air hockey, and a bar. Notable games include Baby Pacman, Frogger, Centipede, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Back to the Future pinball and more.

Before opening day, the Watkins family hoped 3 Decade Arcade would be a light in the community. According to Tyler, “It’s not only about business and numbers but also about making connections with people. It’s so awesome to see people of all ages come in and enjoy the retro game.”

WANTS A PLACE CLOSE BY WHERE THEY CAN GET THE BEST TREATMENT.”

When doctors detected cancer during an annual mammogram, Fran Harrod knew traveling a long distance for treatment wasn’t an option. At the time, she was caring for her mother, who had COPD, and their rescue dog. Plus, she cherished her nearby support system of family, friends and co-workers. “When you’re going through a chemo treatment, you’re sick. No one wants to be on the road,” she said. Today, Fran calls herself “blessed” because of the skilled, compassionate team at Baptist Health Hardin who stood by her from diagnosis through recovery. “You look at life differently after going through something like this. Everything’s a little bit sweeter,” she said.” Learn more at BaptistHealth.com/CancerRisk.
