Patterson Industrial Park. Chang’s strategic vision revolves around fostering a business that bolsters the U.S. battery industry, particularly contributing cathode foil—a vital component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, aligning with the upswing in EV battery production, both regionally and nationally. “I’m proud of contributing to the renewable energy system for future generations,” Chang said.

Having recently relocated to Elizabethtown, Chang admitted feeling nervous initially, as it marked his and his family’s first experience living outside South Korea. Nevertheless, he expressed gratitude for the warm reception and kindness exhibited by the community. He said he eagerly anticipates contributing to the area by helping to usher in fresh opportunities and growth.“We will be growing with the people in Elizabethtown together,” he said.

Within the Elizabethtown area, over 10,000 individuals are gainfully employed by the local manufac turing sec tor. With the arrival of the emerging BlueOval SK Battery Park in Glendale, an additional 5,000 manufac turing jobs are anticipated.

Creating a welcoming environment for toptier manufac turing employers demands a joint endeavor led by seasoned visionaries, drawing upon community input and resources. This is where the Elizabethtown-Hardin County Industrial Foundation (EHCIF) comes in. The organization has embodied this pivotal role since its establishment in the 1950s, when a group of interested Elizabethtown businessmen discussed the community’s heavy reliance upon Ft. Knox as an economic asset and the jeopardy posed by a reduc tion in military expenditures which was occurring at that time. Since then, EHCIF has helped attrac t an abundance of preeminent manufac turers to the region.

EHCIF is led by President and COO Rick Games and Vice President Andy Games. The organization also includes a Board of Direc tors made up of representatives of various businesses, industries, community and educational organizations, along with local municipal and county leaders.

Elizabethtown-Hardin County Industrial Foundation offers a robust experience amid community growth.

The foundation’s core objec tive is to generate employment opportunities and position Hardin County as a premier destination for advanced manufac turing, distribution, and industrial enterprises worldwide. A drive through Elizabethtown’s T.J. Patterson Industrial Park showcases the foundation’s success, evident in the diverse manufac turing facilities that are either under construc tion or have been employing locals for years.

“Although BlueOval SK has garnered substantial attention since its 2021 announcement, the narrative of substantial industrial grow th in this area extends far beyond recent years. It’s a longstanding journey spanning over half a century,” said Andy.

“The thriving industrial sec tor we witness today stands as the result of multi-generational efforts, stemming from foundational investments such as the establishment of our local community college and the inception of our industrial park. BlueOval SK signifies the unfolding of the next chapter in this enduring story.”

The story of Elizabethtown’s industrial sec tor is also one defined by international diversity. Manufac turers and service providers located in Hardin County have direc t or indirec t ownership in countries such as Belgium, England, France, Germany, India, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, and the Netherlands.

“Our achievements at the Industrial Foundation hinge largely upon our ability to showcase Elizabethtown’s distinc tive advantages to a global audience,” said Rick.

“The Elizabethtown region possesses a remarkable track record in embracing employers from diverse corners of the world, an expertise we will leverage as we prepare to welcome thousands of new employees due to BlueOval SK and ancillary developments. Our community’s strength lies not only in our industrial prowess but also in our rich diversity, amplified by our close ties to Fort Knox.”

With Elizabethtown poised for significant economic and community growth, EHCIF is taking proactive steps to embrace newcomers and support existing manufacturing employers by launching a new website, Made Here Elizabethtown.

The website, which highlights both “Great Careers” and “Great Lives,” gives users the ability to access a direc tory of local manufac turing employers and job postings, while also learning about aspec ts of the community including educational opportunities, the healthcare system, the housing market, the arts and entertainment scene and more.

“It is our hope that this resource provides insights into our community’s industrious spirit and the many opportunities we’re proud to offer,” said ECHIF Board Chairman Matt Hess.

“Advanced manufac turing is alive and well in this community and as a result, there are plentiful career opportunities. And by extension of that, this is a great place to live and raise a family.

While many residents recognize this fac t, our challenge moving ahead lies in effec tively communicating this message globally, enabling us to further enhance the ongoing rapid development within our community.”

Amidst this excellence in local manufac turing stands Grant Niebuhr, whose 19-year journey with Altec symbolizes adaptability and expertise across diverse roles within the company, including Manufac turing Engineering, Materials Management, and Plant Management. Joining the company after earning his Engineering degree from Iowa State University, Niebuhr’s current leadership over the Green Fleet Business Unit underscores Altec’s commitment to innovation, reflec ted in offerings including hybrid elec tric systems and fully elec tric trucks.

Altec has not only offered a quality career path for Niebuhr, but also for his wife, Katherine, who has been an employee with the company for 18 years, currently serving in the capacity of an Engineering Systems Manager.

Niebuhr’s dedication extends beyond his professional life as he serves as Board Chairman for CASA of the Heartland, an Elizabethtown-based organization that recruits, trains, and supports a network of volunteers who are court-appointed to ac t as advocates for abused and neglec ted children under the protec tion of the County Family Court system. Niebuhr’s tenure on the board spans seven years, during which he has assumed the role of Board Chairman for five years. He has also served on the United Way of Central Kentucky Board of Direc tors.

“I’ve always been taught and believed that it is our responsibility to give back to the community and help to serve those around us,” he said. “Everyone has different strengths and abilities, and it’s important to learn how to use those to the benefit of those around you.”

While not a native of Elizabethtown, Niebuhr said he and his family have found solace and a welcoming community here.

He said the warmth of the community facilitated not only the upbringing of his children but also meaningful connec tions that significantly contributed to his personal and professional development.

“No matter what industry you work in or what company you work for, there is nothing bad that will happen from being around great people,” Niebuhr said. “They will help shape who you are and can’t help but have an impac t on your life, both personally and professionally. The community of Elizabethtown has had a great impac t on me.”

The Downtown Business Association is alive and well with themed monthly Third Thursday events. The November Friendsgiving Third Thursday brought back a fabulous downtown event reminiscent of Dine Around Downtown. Each shop featured fun holiday displays to get the ball rolling on Christmas shopping, and some of the stores brought in hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

A graduate of North Bullitt High School, Nathaniel earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Administration at the University of Louisville, coupled with double minors in Communication and Exercise Science, and went on to earn a master’s degree in Teaching from the University of the Cumberlands. Throughout his career, he has served as an instructional tutor, PE teacher, and football coach for schools in various Kentucky communities.

As the lead pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church in Radcliff, Hardin spearheaded the founding of North Hardin Christian School in Radcliff, which now has a student body of approximately 500.

Whether it is in business, through the church, or through North Hardin Christian, Hardin said the local community has become home for his family over the past 40 years.

“The encouragement and support has been so valuable through the years,” he said.

“While many people are coming to our area as a result of their jobs, the difference for me is that I choose to be here and I have never regretted that decision.”

With a career spanning over 20 years in materials, purchasing and production management, Brockman currently serves as the Production/Materials Manager at the Elizabethtown plant. Transitioning from Hendrickson’s Somerset plant in 2022, Brockman adeptly oversees production and material control functions, prioritizing safety, quality, productivity, and fostering a conducive work environment centered on workforce development. She said her alignment with Hendrickson’s core values, notably integrity and a positive attitude, significantly shapes her approach to creating an efficient workplace atmosphere. Working with the company since 2005, Brockman touts Hendrickson’s pension plan, benefits, working environment, education assistance, and opportunities for growth.

Lamosek, a Manufacturing Engineer at the Elizabethtown facility, embarked on his journey with Hendrickson in Canton, Ohio, before transitioning to the Elizabethtown plant in 2015. Proficient in overseeing welding, coating, and machining processes, Lamosek brings a diverse background to his role, including internships at corporations such as Ariel Corporation and GE Appliances and a Mechanical Engineering degree from University of Toledo. His responsibilities encompass leading continuous improvement projects, offering maintenance support and troubleshooting equipment—aligning seamlessly with Hendrickson’s emphasis on innovation and operational excellence. Throughout his time at Hendrickson, Lamosek said he has been able to pursue several opportunities for professional development, including access to numerous training sessions to advance his Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and robotics knowledge, along with support to acquire his Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.

JOIN US ON OCTOBER 12TH, 2024, FOR A MEMORABLE EVENT SUPPORTING THE CANCER CARE CENTER AND RADIOLOGY/ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT AT BAPTIST HEALTH HARDIN.

Once again, the Hardin County community rallied together in a remarkable display of generosity and support for the annual Tails & TaTas Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk. The event, which has become a cherished tradition, recently concluded with a heartfelt donation presentation to the Baptist Health Foundation Hardin, underscoring the community’s commitment to local cancer care.

During the check presentation on November 18th, the Tails & TaTas Breast Cancer Awareness Committee handed over a substantial sum of $27,687.06. In a beautiful moment, Marilyn Ford of WesBanco, expressing her penchant for round numbers, graciously contributed an additional $312.94, bringing the total donation to a substantial $28,000.

Fueled by the community’s spirit, the committee engaged in meaningful discussions with representatives from the Cancer Care Center and Radiology/Oncology departments to identify crucial needs. The Cancer Care Center expressed a desire to enhance patient comfort by upgrading infusion chairs in the new pavilion. The goal is to transition from manual recliners to electrically operated chairs with massage and heat options.

These improvements will significantly enhance the experience for the over 12,000 patients treated annually.

The Radiology/Oncology department identified a need for a Comfort Marker 2.0 and related supplies. Without painful needle technology, this innovative tool minimizes patient discomfort and leaves a more minor mark during radiation therapy. Pending hospital approval, the funds raised from this year’s run will contribute to purchasing these vital items.

Looking forward, the committee is already planning for the 2024 Tails & TaTas Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Run scheduled for October 12.

The community’s ongoing support is vital as all proceeds from the event are designated for the Baptist Health Foundation Hardin, explicitly benefiting the Cancer Care Center, Radiology/ Oncology departments, and the Lymphedema Clinic. The Tails & TaTas Breast Cancer Awareness Committee remains proactive in the everevolving landscape of cancer treatment. Plans are underway to compile a wish list for future purchases, including a second vein finder, Aquaphor ointment, and supplies for the innovative “tattoo” instrument.

WORKING WITH CORVIN’S Corvin’s welcomes walk-in clients and pre-scheduled appointments; on any day of the week, they have five to seven specialists ready to serve. Customers who bring in their measurements and photos of their rooms can get a preliminary quote the same day. They also offer in-home estimates that can be scheduled while the customer is browsing the showrooms; in this case, it is helpful to have products selected prior to measurements. Once flooring products are ordered, the average completion time is 2-6 weeks. When placing your cabinet and countertop order, the completion time is 4-8 weeks. Elizabethtown Community and Technical College is the region’s premier institution for education and workforce training and, as such, is constantly seeking out ways to remove barriers so students can achieve their educational goals. At the same time, the college is looking ahead to determine employment needs of the communities it ser ves and developing programs and training oppor tunities to help build the workforce of tomorrow. Each of these tasks require thought, care, and communication, and fostering productive par tnerships is the key to succeeding.

Take ECTC’s collaboration with BlueOval SK, for example. The region is seeing an ever-increasing need for highly skilled, well-trained employees in advanced manufacturing fields. The ECTC BlueOval SK Training Center, once complete, will prepare those employees to forge successful careers in electric batter y manufacturing and build brighter futures for their families. Additionally, as a par t of the Metallica Scholars Initiative, the college is better able to enhance its career and technical programs with scholarships and training, and students reap the benefits. And with the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, students can earn a degree in the high-demand fields of business and IT, construction and trades, transpor tation and logistics, healthcare and advanced manufacturing programs tuition free. It covers up to 60 credit hours and up to $400 per year in fees.

Even before students can focus on their education, however, they must not have to worr y about basic needs. Many ECTC students have some form of food, housing or transpor tation insecurity. That’s where the college’s par tnership with Family Scholar House comes in. That organization allows ECTC to better suppor t the students who need a little hand up, but, even better, the coming years will see the expansion of those ser vices in the form of the Home for Hope, a 48-unit on-campus housing complex for student parents. Family Scholar House is par t of the Student Success Hub, which is a centralized location for students to get the ser vices they need, such as tutoring, mentoring, or help with financial dif ficulties or food insecurity. Finding assistance is easier, meaning achieving educational goals is that much more likely.

Deena London, Magnolia Bank’s President and CEO, has spent the past three decades establishing numerous connections both within the bank and throughout the community.

Deena’s journey with the bank commenced in 1993 when she joined as a teller while concurrently pursuing her education at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. Juggling a full-time job and raising her three daughters, she earned her associate degree from ECTC and, subsequently, her bachelor’s degree in science.

Deena soon transitioned into an accounting role that laid the foundation for a prosperous career.

Her multifaceted career path led her to oversee pivotal areas within the bank, including Operations, Human Resources, Retail, and IT. Her leadership prowess became evident as she assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer in 2012, followed by her appointment as President in 2019.

Beyond the boardroom, community service has been intrinsic to Deena’s life. She serves as Secretary to the Board for the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer for the Down Syndrome Association of the Heartland, and on the Campaign Committee for the Home for Hope Family Scholar House project in partnership with the ECTC Foundation. She has also volunteered with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, with various school athletic organizations for her daughters, and at church in various roles.

A native of LaRue County, Deena moved to Elizabethtown in 2016 with her husband, Daniel.

Reflecting on her experiences, she expressed gratitude for the supportive environment both within Magnolia Bank and the broader community.

BETH AVEY BUILDING ON PASSION FOR FORT KNOX REGION IN KRDA ROLE

In her role as Vice President of the Knox Regional Development Alliance (KRDA), Beth Avey works every day to help fulfill the nonprofit’s mission of promoting and protecting Fort Knox to maximize its economic impact. For Avey, helping to create a more prosperous future in the region isn’t just work, it’s about serving a community that has been a catalyst for her professional growth and place where her family’s story unfolded.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Avey served in the Army after graduating from Syracuse University, earning her commission as an officer through the Army’s ROTC program at Syracuse.

Her nearly 13-year active-duty tenure included a pivotal stint at Fort Knox from 1999 to 2002, where she met her husband, Derek Avey, cementing her ties to Central Kentucky.

Primarily a Public Affairs Officer during her military service, Avey’s passion for telling the Army’s story has persisted. After her involvement in the Army’s advertising program at Fort Knox, she participated in the highly sought-after Training With Industry program at Ketchum Public Relations. Subsequently, she served at the Pentagon, ultimately serving as the Director of Army Marketing for the Chief of Army Public Affairs.

In 2004, an opportunity beckoned the Aveys back to Fort Knox in a civilian capacity, anchoring their residence in the region since.

“I fell in love with this region when I was first stationed at Fort Knox,” Avey said. “When we had the chance to come back here and make it our home, we jumped at the opportunity.”

Transitioning to civilian life, Avey co-founded the Elizabethtown-based Heartland Communications Consultants, Inc. in 2006, alongside fellow Army veteran Conrad Curry. While working with Heartland, she co-founded Where Opportunity Knox, linking veterans and military spouses with jobs in the Greater Louisville Region.

Avey took on her role with KRDA in 2019, working in lockstep with the organization’s President/CEO, Retired Brig. Gen. James Iacocca.

“This role has been immensely rewarding and having the chance to work with someone of Brig. Gen. Iacocca’s caliber has been incredible,” Avey said.

At KRDA, Avey directs her focus toward leveraging Fort Knox’s $4.8 billion annual economic impact, highlighting the community’s role in fortifying its strength and future growth. For Avey, her commitment stems from deep gratitude for a community that shaped her and her family’s story.

“It is a welcoming and suppor tive community where people are committed to helping one another and making our region better,” she said.

To say the last three years have been crazy is an understatement at the very least. From a pandemic to nagging inflation, our economy has seen both ends of the spectrum. Early in 2020, prior to COVID-19 becoming an issue, our stock markets were roaring and mortgage rates were still remarkably low, with 30-year fixed rates below 4%. Then came mid-March 2020, which turned everything on its head. We saw the stock markets tumble, The Fed reduce their prime borrowing rate to zero again, and mortgage rates were down to values we had never seen before. This all set the stage for an eighteenmonth barrage of home purchases, home refinances, and an extraordinary increase in home values.

While record-low rates and high consumer liquidity during the second half of 2020 and all of 2021 helped to continuously push home values up, real estate markets have seen a very limited inventory of available homes keeping sale prices at these high price points, even with an unprecedented swing in rates from the record lows of 2020 and 2021 to where we are today. Inventory is low because not many homeowners are putting their homes on the market. A vast majority of homeowners are sitting on record low interest rates with their current mortgages and don’t want to leave that comfort to buy a new one. That said, this is actually not the absolute right way to go about it. If you are a homeowner, and you see a need to move, now is as good a time as any to do so.

This may seem counter-intuitive, to give up a 3% rate to buy new at 7%, but homeowners need to keep in mind that houses are bought and monthly payments are made in dollars, and not in interest rates. Elizabethtown is in a unique position, where significant population growth is expected over the next five to ten years. The combination of this growth, plus the eventual calming of interest rates will lead to a high demand real estate market where we will continue to experience limited inventory. The basics of supply and demand tell us that this is a recipe for further increase in home values and sale prices and the increases may be large in a short amount of time.

Waiting out this rate market, therefore; is not in your best interest if you are seeing a need to move in the present or near future. You will be waiting out a rate to see values increase during that same span of time. Securing a home today, while more expensive at the outset due to rates, will actually end up being much less expensive over the course of homeownership, as you will be securing the home at today’s prices and have the ability to refinance later to reduce your housing expenses. Waiting out rates will inevitably increase homeownership costs in the long-term.

Furthermore, homeowners are currently enjoying a significant equity position in their homes. This equity can be utilized to place a large down payment on a new home purchase, or even to eliminate some other high-interest debt that could be looming. With the prime borrowing rate being as high as it is, home equity loans and credit cards are at their highest rates in nearly two decades. Calming some of that debt load could be in a prospective homebuyer’s best interest as well.

The real estate market has been slower this calendar year than previous, but there are many positives to buying now based on what the not-so-distant future holds for us here in Elizabethtown. Increasing population and decreasing rates will create a larger demand for homes in the next few years, meaning that home prices will only increase, and may do so at record levels. If moving to a new home is on your radar, you would be best served finding one today rather than waiting.

In November, the community celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Eric and Joe Show, a local variety show that serves as the unofficial start of the local Christmas season. More than 1,500 attendees from across the region enjoyed the annual show, which features original sketch comedy, along with music by the Mark Melloan Band. This year’s theme, Space Out, centered on a three-part storyline featuring various aliens and their attempts to become more human-like. If that doesn’t scream the holidays, we don’t know what does. Mark your calendar for the 2024 show, set for November 22 - 24, 2024, at the Historic State Theater.

John and Kris work with different companies and non-profits across our community on barrel picks, selecting around 40 barrel picks per year as collaborations and for John O’s. They use a blind tasting method at each distillery, choosing to taste barrels before asking about the age, proof, or where the barrel has been stored in the rick house. Once they’ve picked the best bourbon based on flavor, they ask the details.

Roanoke Crossing is the NEW store label. John grew up in LaRue County and helped one of his best friends on his farm; it was located in the Roanoke community in LaRue County, and they spent some time at the Roanoke grocery eating lunch.

John’s first liquor store is located in the Roanoke Crossing development.

Bringing bourbon’s best to Etown

All visits to Elizabethtown should include a stop at John O’s Liquors and hopefully an introduction to John Lewis or Kris Patel, co-owners, local bourbon experts, and all-around great guys. The duo is always looking to bring new Kentucky bourbon experiences to our community. For years, customers have been able to find carefully selected store picks from well-known bourbon brands across the state, including Four Roses, Elijah Craig, 1792, and Buffalo Trace.

With this success, John and Kris recently launched their private label, Roanoke Crossing.

Named as an homage to the place where John was born and raised in LaRue County, John sources and curates a bourbon flavor showcasing Kentucky.

“John O’s was founded by hard work, determination, and a desire to bring quality products to the community from a local person,” John said. “We are proud to be a family business. We are so thankful for our customers, and we are proud to serve this community!”

John O’s is a favorite for local bourbon aficionados and those traveling into the region, thanks to the store’s access to many hard-to-find allocated bottles. While rare bottles are available at both locations, the John O’s on Dixie showcases John’s personal collection.

“We work hard to get our customers the highly sought bottles we hope to have lining our own personal bar shelves,” John said.

While bourbon is king in Kentucky, John O’s prides itself on offering a wide variety of products. The stores are currently diversifying their product offerings to serve the growing Korean population and making sure that soju is readily available. Insider tip: Around Easter, John hides special, rare bourbons throughout the Dixie store, creating an Easter egg hunt of sorts for hard-to-find bourbon.

John O’s is co-owned by John Lewis, his wife Leigh Ann, and business partner Kris Patel.

RACHEL COOMER, DO, OB/GYN WHY DID YOU BECOME A PHYSICIAN? I chose a career in medicine because it is an amazing field that is constantly changing and keeping me on my toes. I also truly enjoy patient care and educating my patients on how to live healthier, happier lives through healthcare.

TALK ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR CARING FOR WOMEN. I specialize in caring for the reproductive health of women.

This includes a variety of treatments in gynecology ranging from annual exams to sexual health and menopause to obstetric health for pregnant women. What I enjoy the most is the continuity of care and empowering women by educating them about their health and wellbeing. I get to see patients yearly for their annual exams, throughout their pregnancy, and be there for the delivery of their child. Getting to experience these major events with my patients is a privilege and honor every day.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR WORK? My favorite thing about my work is empowering women by educating them about their health and well-being.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RETURN TO ELIZABETHTOWN TO PRACTICE? My husband’s family and my family are both still here in Elizabethtown, so we wanted to move back to be closer to them and to spend more quality time with them. We also bought a beautiful piece of property near the Nolin River and wanted to build our dream home in the community that we grew up in.

TO WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD IN HEALTHCARE? I am looking forward to growing the medical community with Baptist Health Hardin and providing the most up-todate and evidence-based medicine for my community. I look forward to making Elizabethtown a hub for medical excellence in women’s health.

WHY ARE YOU PROUD TO SERVE THE CENTRAL KENTUCKY REGION? I am proud to serve a community that helped me to become the physician that I am today and to allow me to provide the best quality of care to my friends, family, and community who continue to support me.

Dr. Coomer is an Elizabethtown native. She graduated from Western Kentucky University and Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music, reading and gardening. Dr. Coomer enjoys spending time with her husband, who is a local writer and musician – and also spending time with her cats Vigo, Dana, Murray and Evelyn. She stays active by hiking, running, camping and kayaking.

T. ABRAHAM DE WITT, MD, BEHAVIORAL HEALTH WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PHYSICIAN? I’ve wanted to go into medicine for as long as I can remember. There were several factors fueling this but the most salient was the one of which I was initially least aware. Working in medicine puts a person in close proximity to the nature of the human condition. That’s attractive to me because I lean a bit philosophical. I want to know why we exist and how we might better exist.

Making such inquiries into a career in which I can partner with my patients to explore these questions made perfect sense.

WHO INFLUENCED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH? I credit the residents with whom I worked as a medical student. Initially, I had no interest in psychiatry – then I met some of the residents and saw the work they were doing with patients and took part in conversations about the field.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR WORK? My favorite aspect of my work is “measuring” the dimensions of consciousness as they manifest in an individual and interfacing with how these dimensions converge into personhood. I’ve always found people to be fascinating creatures, and my work reminds me of that every day. Humans are incredibly complex in both our physiology and in our development of consciousness. I see getting to explore this as a career as endlessly captivating.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RETURN TO PRACTICE IN ELIZABETHTOWN? Elizabethtown is a sort of meeting between metropolitan and rural areas. It makes for an interesting social dynamic to live and work within. I can be busy and active when I like, and I can be reclusive and contemplative when I prefer. I also love my family and wanted to be geographically closer to them.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT PRACTICING MEDICINE IN YOUR HOMETOWN? Moving back to Elizabethtown has brought me a sense that I’m having a positive impact on the community. I grew up here and so naturally, I credit this area with helping me to actualize “me.” I like to think I’m helping to lay the groundwork for someone else’s journey in a similar regard.

TO WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD IN THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE? I want to see greater appreciation for the internal, experiential aspect of existing as a human being. It’s important we meet people where they are and empathize with their interpretation of the world around them.

WHY ARE YOU PROUD TO SERVE THE CENTRAL KENTUCKY REGION? I have an appreciation for crossroads and gray areas.

Kentucky is an excellent example of when opposite sides of spectra meet. North and south, east and west; red and blue; city and country. It’s in this convergence that interesting things about being human begin to clarify themselves. I’m proud of Kentucky’s diversity and of the continued efforts Kentuckians are making to meet their counterparts in unity rather than in division.

Dr. de Witt is a graduate of University of Louisville School of Medicine and is experienced in inpatient and outpatient psychiatry. He enjoys and practices meditation, writing, art, and playing music and video games.

FEDWA LUTFI, MD, FAMILY MEDICINE WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PHYSICIAN? Wanting to become a physician goes back to when I was nine years old. I lived overseas then. I decided to go into medicine when my grandfather passed away. We were in a small town with no doctors. I had thought, “If one of our family members was a doctor, he would still be here.”

And then later, my little sister got sick when I was 13. She had a rare condition, and I remember my parents trying to find a doctor in town. We couldn’t find the specialist we needed around Elizabethtown at that time. These experiences kept me on the path, and I never changed my mind.

TALK ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR MEDICINE. When you can help people with their most basic needs...It’s so good when someone comes to you, and you are able to help them even if it’s just by talking to them or giving them medicine to make them feel better. It gives me joy to do that for people.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF PRACTICING MEDICINE? My favorite part of medicine is diagnosis and finding the reason things happen. For example, when patients come to me with an issue they’ve had for years, but no one has dug deeper and found the cause. It can be any disease. I treat diabetes every day. I love seeing patients’ A1c improve, their health improve, and how they feel. It’s so rewarding to see someone who has been feeling bad come back to me feeling really good. That makes me feel good to follow-up and see how people are improving.

WHY DID YOU RETURN TO PRACTICE IN ELIZABETHTOWN? I have always known there was a need here. Growing up here, it was very hard to find a doctor. I knew there was a need here which is why I have come back here.

There has been improvement in this though especially with the Radcliff clinic. It’s much better than it was 20 years ago.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PRACTICING IN THE ELIZABETHTOWN AREA? It’s nostalgic. When I am driving through Radcliff, it brings back so many memories because my dad had a Citgo gas station there 20 years ago. I love driving through there. It brings back old memories of when I was younger, and times were different. Getting back to that small community means so much because there’s such a need there.

TO WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING MOST FORWARD IN THE FUTURE? I am looking forward to developing a relationship with my patients and be there for them when they need me. Continuity of care and preventive medicine is what I focus on. I lost my dad to heart disease.

He didn’t go to the doctor, and he didn’t take care of his health. I stress preventive care to my patients even if it’s giving them a quick story. Sometimes I make it personal when I talk about my dad – because what took him away from us was heart disease, and that’s easily preventable today. I am most focused on preventive care and helping my patients prevent a catastrophic heart attack or stroke.

WHY ARE YOU PROUD TO SERVE THE CENTRAL KENTUCKY REGION? The fact that I am from here, and it feels so amazing to come home and be able to help everyone here and make our community healthy and better.

Dr. Lutfi graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. She is a graduate of John Hardin High School and has called Elizabethtown home for more than 20 years. Dr. Lutfi enjoys cooking, especially fresh foods. Dr. Lutfi and her husband enjoy traveling. Traveling is how she expands her cookbook. Dr. Lutfi also enjoys keeping up with her home and being a wife and a mother to her five-month-old and five-year-old.

When I was first asked to write an article for this edition of Elizabethtown Lifestyle magazine concerning the “Made Here Elizabethtown” initiative, my mind quickly drifted to the many relationships that have positively impacted me over the years.

A true relationship is one that is beneficial to both parties.

If anyone has ever heard me speak about the banking industry, you will undoubtedly hear me say that banking is a business built on relationships. Banks offer many of the same products and services, but the banks that stand out amongst the rest are the ones that build and cultivate lasting relationships with their customers. To note, this is not an article about banking.

When I look back on my banking career that began a little over eighteen years ago, I came to West Point Bank with no banking experience and very few connections to anyone in the community. I needed to put myself out there. I needed to meet people. I strove to be as active as possible in the community by connecting with local realtors, attending the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce luncheons, and joining a non-profit or charitable organization. Reflecting back on my early efforts as a banker, I understood that in order to earn business and be the best banker I could be, I needed to establish relationships with as many people as I could throughout the community.

Time has allowed me to connect with more people, and those relationships have given me opportunities that I could only dream of. Many of the relationships I have built at the bank have led to valued friendships and allowed me to connect with other truly amazing people from all different walks of life. Additionally, I have enjoyed my time serving in the community in a variety of ways by coaching youth sports, volunteering at schools, serving at my church, and supporting various local charity and non-profit organization initiatives. The relationships I have developed have also allowed me to grow into a number of leadership positions, such as being an Elder at Grace Heartland Church, serving as the first non-builder president of the Lincoln Trail Homebuilders Association, and as board chair of the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce. These accomplishments were made possible by the meaningful relationships in my own life. I say all of this not to be boastful but to encourage anyone reading this to focus on the current and potential relationships in their lives. The old saying of, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” could not ring more true; I would not be who I am today, or where I am today without the many people I have met and built some sort of relationship with along the way.

As I mentioned above, relationships are beneficial to both connected parties. The wonderful people in this community whom I have had the opportunity to meet often share the same visions as me: to make this community the best possible place to live and to make a positive impact on someone’s life. What I see now as my own short-sightedness to establish relationships for work has since shifted dramatically. I now truly seek out those relationships because a real relationship is life-changing and rewarding for both individuals in so many different ways. Obviously, each relationship is different but each is equally important to me, which brings me to my point.

When I think about “Made Here Elizabethtown,” I think about all the inspiring relationships I have made in this wonderful community, and how they have impacted my career as a bank president, and, more importantly, how they have impacted me as a person. I encourage you to take some time out of your day and focus on building or strengthening a new or existing relationship. Chances are that relationship will build upon itself, and before you know it, you will be blessed, or even better, you will be a blessing to another.

Over my 34 years, I’ve witnessed the evolution of homes, cultivating a profound appreciation for the art and science of creating living spaces.

From my earliest memories, the sights and sounds of homebuilding surrounded me. As I grew, I moved beyond mere observation, leading teams on construction sites, learning every facet of the construction process, and learning invaluable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and the meticulous attention to detail required in the homebuilding process.

These construction sites weren’t just workplaces; they were classrooms that shaped the core of my character. Creating homes for families became more than a profession; it became a love affair. It fills me with pride to see the mark we leave on the landscape.

Fueling my passion for the housing industry, I decided to pursue a career in real estate.

Armed with intimate knowledge of homes and the construction process, I was wellequipped to serve our clients at the highest level. Elizabethtown, with its rich history and vibrant community, provided the perfect backdrop for my journey into the world of real estate. We quickly grew and remain one of the top real estate teams in the area, serving our clients through existing homes, remodels, new construction, and property management.

Now, with my own two sons growing up in and around the business, we continue the legacy established by my parents, contributing to the ever-changing cityscape of Elizabethtown.

The joy I find in watching my sons embrace the industry and this local community and find roots in the same dirt that my Dad helped me create mine is like no other.

In reflection, my journey from a child on construction sites to a real estate professional has been a remarkable one, deeply intertwined with the growth and transformation of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. I think about all the hardworking people who walked with me on this journey and helped build and develop me into the person I am today. Looking back on the stunning homes and the evolving cityscape, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons learned, the bonds formed, and the opportunity to contribute to the place I proudly call home. In Elizabethtown, the journey from foundation to family is a story that continues to unfold, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and homes of its residents.

Elizabethtown-based non-profit Give 270 recently presented two $20,000 proceeds checks to the Elizabethtown Community

and Technical College (ECTC) Foundation and Baptist Health Foundation Hardin. The proceeds were generated by Give 270’s recent charity raffle, Lightning ‘N a Bottle, sponsored by Lightsource bp. Since initiating its inaugural bourbon raffle in 2021, Give 270 has successfully generated over $1 million solely from raffles, benefiting the local community and region. Raffle

proceeds have supported various local organizations and initiatives, such as United Way of Central Kentucky, CASA of the Heartland, the Elizabethtown Police Foundation, multiple scholarship programs, and others.

Hope Academy for Kids nurtures and restores hope to at-risk children by providing educational, emotional, physical and spiritual support to help them reach their potential and find their purpose in life as one community locks arms and works together. They are a local afterschool mentorship program that cares for disadvantaged students who need additional support. Their approach is holistic; they partner students with caring adults, giving academic help, providing snacks and meals, offering recreational activities, opening their on-site clothing closet to students and their families, teaching moral and spiritual lessons, and so much more.

There are many barriers in the lives of atrisk children today, such as peer pressure, learning difficulties, poor academic achievement, dysfunctional or broken homes, as well as poverty. All of these strains hurt a child’s development and can leave them with lasting health challenges.

Many children lack the support that is needed to succeed in their complex and broken worlds—which is where Hope Academy for Kids steps in.

Winston Churchill says it best, “we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”. YOU ARE THE REASON we can be “storychangers” -breaking chains of despair, bringing hope, and making dreams come true for thousands of children across Kentucky’s Heartland.

Elizabethtown Lifestyle has hosted a series of non-profit events over the past few years in addition to co-hosting and assisting with other non-profit events in the community with event planning, event design, floral design, and graphic design. Events you may recognize include The Fall Ball for Hope Academy for Kids, EAT Elizabethtown and EAT Elizabethtown Restaurant Week for Silverleaf, the CASA Farm to Fork, Birdies & Birdies for Down Syndrome Association of the Heartland, ECTC Black Ties & Better Lives, LOVE Gala for Project L.E.A.R.N., Tiffany’s Brunch for Helping Hand of Hope, The Harvest Gala, and most recently, Nightmare On Helm Street. We have helped raise over $300,000 in the community in the past three years.
