MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO VISIT RACHEL BROSKY INTERIORS LOCATED AT 104 N. MANTLE,

SUITE 100, ELIZABETHTOWN, KENTUCKY.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN with Rachel Brosky

Approachable. Comfortable. Relaxing. These are the words that come to mind when we stepped into Rachel Brosky’s interior design studio. The color-saturated, energetic vibe makes you feel at home almost as much as Rachel herself. She is down-to-earth, relatable, and easy to talk to. From the outside of her studio, it’s hard to fathom the depth of the space. Still, as you enter, you are immediately drawn into a world of beautiful draperies, rugs, pillows, and an endless array of gorgeous samples that you would only expect to find in a major city. The selection is truly amazing, and Rachel certainly knows her way around her resource room. You really have to come in and see for yourself.

Perhaps you’ve moved to Hardin County from afar or are finally able to build your dream house right here in your hometown. Maybe it’s time to update the place where you’ve lived for years now that the kids have all moved away. Rachel is here to help with your transitions, big or small.

HOW RACHEL BROSKY INTERIORS BEGAN

Rachel Brosky started her business 27 years ago in a spare bedroom of her mother’s house. Rachel learned to sew from her mother, Evelyn Brown, an accomplished seamstress. As a young adult, Rachel happened across a how-to book about sewing window treatments. The idea of sewing for your home was a moment of inspiration; she began to experiment with making curtains, dust skirts, pillows, and cushions. Eventually, her friends started noticing what she had made and asked her to make things for their homes, then friends of friends’ homes, and that’s how it all started.

After some time of learning, and many mistakes, or “lessons,” as Rachel likes to call them, she started doing custom sewing for a few interior designers and other local clients. In fact, one of her first clients from 25+ years ago, has a new home, with new window treatments, featured in this article.

In 2005, Rachel opened her first retail location. From that initial opening to today, she has consistently provided quality draperies, bedding, and all things interior decor to Central Kentucky and surrounding areas. She has added many products and services along the way that enhance her offerings. While Rachel’s primary focus is window treatments, she does offer whole-home design services to a few clients each year.

In her current location on N. Mantle Avenue, Rachel describes it as the most comfortable, genuine presentation of her craft. “I am right at home here, surrounded by things I love, including vintage, new, and bargain store finds that bring me joy. It’s a great environment for creativity.”

“MARKIE IS, AND HAS BEEN, A RAY OF SUNSHINE IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. SHE WAS ONE OF MY FIRST CLIENTS, HANDING OVER HER BOLTS OF FABRIC AND TRUSTING ME TO MAKE SOMETHING PRETTY. SHE HAS NEVER FAILED TO CHECK IN AND HAS ENCOURAGED ME THROUGH THE MANY GROWING PAINS I EXPERIENCED OVER THE YEARS. IT MADE PERFECT SENSE TO INFUSE THIS ROOM WITH A GLOW THAT IS A SMALL REPRESENTATION OF HER GENEROUS SPIRIT.”

“WOW” PAPER

This foyer and butler’s pantry demonstrate the transformative effect of wallpaper. The heavily textured grasscloth cozies up the entryway, while the matte gold and silver Art Deco pattern makes stirring that cocktail a special event!

I JUST CAN’T DECIDE

You may enjoy scrolling through Pinterest or Instagram, saving pictures you find inspiring. Sometimes we end up with hundreds of photos and maybe can’t quite narrow down what to do where. Rachel loves to review your collection of photos and solve for the common denominator, connecting the elements that catch your eye. Trends come and go; she is careful to balance current styles with timeless selections, so you can feel confident you will keep loving your choices for a long time.

INTRIGUING INSPIRATIONS

In this sunny room, the story starts with this vivid pottery. Considering this client’s sanguine personality, it had to be full of energy! The fabrics and trim were selected to create a joyful, relaxing space to daydream. The yellow fringe on the draperies carries the theme, and the custom-painted drapery rods make it truly unique.

31

WHERE THE MAGIC STARTS

Rachel will comb through hundreds of samples to discover that perfect fabric for your windows, maybe a little bit of trim on the edge, a stylish rod to cap it off, and the whole room comes together. Don’t be surprised or embarrassed when you do a little dance... She’s used to it and will likely join in! The display of valances are crafted in black and white, so clients can easily imagine what their window treatment would look like with the patterns and colors of their choice. Whether you love romantic swags, tailored box pleats, or a crisp roman shade, Rachel will create a bespoke masterpiece for you. Unlimited possibilities from top-tier manufacturers are all within reach.

BEDDING & BOLSTERS

Browse the gorgeous and extensive custom bedding line from Eastern Accents, or have a sofa-full of coordinated toss pillows created in just the right size and color combination. In a hurry? Rachel has an exclusive line of Quick-Ship Draperies that can be delivered in as little as two weeks! Select from various textures and weights of linen and silk in popular neutrals.

LABOR OF LOVE

They say if you do something that you love, you will never work a day in your life. I could debate the idea of never working, but I genuinely love my business. Operating in a world of beautiful textiles, fresh new spaces, and endless possibilities is quite a privilege. Draperies, wallpaper, rugs, bedding, etc., transform a blank room into a welcoming oasis. Harsh echos are softened. Glaring sun is filtered. Cold floors are warmed. How fantastic to be a part of that.

There are so many amazing people in this town. It’s humbling to be allowed to work in their dwellings, sharing ideas of “new and improved.” And what an honor it is to help someone love their home a little more.

34

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

You may know exactly how you want your window treatments and decor to look. Perhaps, it seems just too daunting to even get started. Don’t worry— Rachel can make this process fun and easy. After working with hundreds of happy clients, she has the vision and experience to deliver show-stopping results that you will love for years.

All you have to do is schedule a consultation, and she will take it from there. Rachel likes to find out about your hopes and needs for the space. Pets? Teenagers? Downsizing? During a visit to your home or office, she will take pictures and measurements. At a follow-up appointment, you will be presented with several outstanding options, and you can decide what feels the most like you. Upon placing your order, the current waiting time for custom draperies is about 8-10 weeks, and 3-4 weeks for blinds. This is astoundingly fast by most standards. Rachel has an experienced team of professional installers, from draperies to wallpaper and paint, that will carefully deliver your finished look. You can simply sit back and watch the transformation while you enjoy a cup of coffee!

INVESTING IN INTERIOR DESIGN

Sometimes designers get a bad reputation for “mystery pricing,” and you don’t quite know what your price includes or if there will be unexpected add-ons. Rachel likes to create detailed quotes, so you can know exactly what you are paying for and easily decide what best matches your budget. Rachel explains, “Personally, I am repelled by a hard sell. I believe the value and uniqueness of our products are readily recognizable, so we are happy to allow our clients lots of space to make decisions. Custom window treatments are something you will enjoy for many years, and we want you to be excited about your investment.”

COLORS, PATTERNS & TEXTURES GALORE

Admittedly, mixing patterns and textures can be a little confusing, and many of us default to something “safe.” Wouldn’t it be great to feel confident that your room is in balance and provides a harmonious environment? Rachel created a seamless mood board here using multiple fabrics, blinds, wallpaper, and drapery hardware. The swatches include printed linen, embroidery, appliqué, velvet, dimensional trim, grasscloth, woven woods, and iron. A couple photos from Rachel’s living room demonstrate the application of multiple mediums and interests. Her favorite color combination of purple and blue are represented in various

elements. Rachel’s harp, which is her favorite “accessory,” is tucked in close to her piano. It looks like creating “harmony” is very much a part of her story. “Too often, we pick a feature and run with it, overly concerned that everything matches, but that can get a little monotonous. I like to include something unexpected. It could be something to which the client has an emotional attachment—something passed down from their parents, the first piece they bought with their spouse, something their children made. That is the best possible form of texture and pattern!”

37
SPECIAL THANKS TO ROBERT & NANCY WILKINS FOR ALLOWING US TO FEATURE THEIR HOME.

SPECIALITY WINDOW TREATMENTS

Do you have a challenging window? Does nothing fit? Take a look at some of the unusual settings where Rachel found a perfect solution. In the picture to the left, the windows are at two distinctly different heights, and the left window is very close to the corner. After a few sketches, she was able to create a unique design that bridged the two walls to create a cohesive, lofty application of draperies, including a hinged curtain rod to allow optimum exposure to the beautiful exterior.

Below, a bay sitting area needed something special to make the space feel tucked in. Using a template, a custom curved iron drapery rod was crafted to elevate the gauzy sheers, featuring a subtle printed linen at the top.

Arched windows? These medallions carry the fabric along the graceful arch of the window, and the upholstered cornice mimics the curve to maintain the view.

YOU MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED:

• Uneven hems

• Mis-matched patterns

• Too long or too short sizes

• Not quite the right color

• Low-quality fabric

• Nothing wide enough to cover the window

BENEFITS OF CUSTOM

While there is an endless selection of ready-made window treatments and bedding online and in box stores, there is nothing quite like having something made just for you. There’s no such thing as a “standard window” anymore, so it’s no wonder this can be a challenge! Why not get exactly what you want? Is it expensive? You might be surprised. A pair of lined, workroom-quality side panels along with a decorative curtain rod starts at about $600. Naturally, a larger window or an upgraded fabric will affect the final price of your window treatments. Perhaps you would like to add remote-controlled motorization or trim along the edges. Custom window treatments are tailored specifically for your window. The size is perfect, the workmanship is top-quality, and the fabrics are carefully chosen for each room. The difference is unmistakable.

WORDS FROM RACHEL BROSKY

“Reflecting on the years I have been in business, the hundreds of homes I have visited, the thousands of installations, and who knows how many miles on my sewing machine… The best measurement of all has been the endless line of genuinely good people I have met.

I whole-heartedly believe that our surroundings enhance our self-image, and our self-image is reflected in our surroundings. It is a continuous symbiotic relationship. What does your home say about you? If it doesn’t match, let’s get started. Let’s find out what elevates you.

While we all love the idea of having everything perfect down to the last accessory, the most beautiful feature of any home is the spirit of the people who live there. You can feel it when you walk in, and whatever curtain or cushion I can add to that is just fluff—but it’s really cool fluff!”

HOW TO WORK WITH RACHEL

Walk-ins are always welcome, and we are happy to give you a quick tour of our studio. The best approach is to call and discuss the scope of your project, and see if a consultation is the next step.

Head Liners Salon and Spa of Elizabethtown began serving Hardin County and surrounding counties with awarding-winning expert hair services in 1984. Having been in the hair industry for over 55 years, Owners Geanie Ford and Sandi Holland have seen hairstyles and color trends evolve. Did you know your natural skin tone, hair color, and eye color are the truest between the ages of 13-30? As we age, we lose the ability to produce melanin, which is what makes the color of our skin. The warmth gradually fades, eye color lightens, and in most cases, overall coloring moves towards cool to prepare for the graying of your hair. It’s important to choose the correct tones to compliment your skin and eye color. Why not change your hair color with the changing seasons? Geanie and Sandi, along with stylists Ashly Nichols, Kathy Nelson, and Lizzie Skaggs, can recommend a seasonal hair color change based on your lifestyle and budget while respecting the integrity of your hair and integrating the latest color techniques using the highest quality brands in the industry with Eufora International and Lanza.

Some things to remember when thinking about changing hair colors:

• Classic hairstyles never go out of style, and color can change your look without changing your haircut!

• Any style can be seasonally updated with “highlights,” “lowlights,” or “glossing.”

• Trendy styles take more consideration and require more maintenance. Fashion colors (pinks, blues, greens, etc.) fade quicker and can be very difficult to completely remove later.

• While Dry shampoos can be a great way to “refresh” and extend your style… be aware of possible “buildup” since it absorbs oils and hair products that may sit on the hair for an extra day or two.

• To keep your color vibrant and your scalp healthy, use a color protectant shampoo and conditioner as they will balance the PH of your hair and scalp, hydrate, nourish, restore, and repair the hair.

• If you use heat to style (blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons, etc.), always use a heat protector to keep from damaging the hair.

• Regular haircuts are a must to prevent split ends or frizzy hair.

• Following a healthy diet is crucial to promote a normal scalp, where it all begins!

family faves interviews with families in custom builds

We had the pleasure of interviewing three families who built homes in Hardin County with the help of custom home builders Smith Family Homes, Brantingham Builders, and Will Harris Homes. Read the feature to hear why each chose the builder they did, what they loved about the process, and what they love most about their home. Each family also offers insight and advice for families building homes here in the future.

WHEN SELECTING A BUILDER, WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT SMITH FAMILY HOMES?

Smith Family Homes are hands on with you the entire process (this was extremely important to us since this was our first experience), have a focused attention to detail, and encourage your home to be unique to your lifestyle! We love that our home stands out—we had such a fun time creating it with Clay, Mary, and their team!

WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE HOME-BUILDING PROCESS? AS YOU WALK THROUGH YOUR HOME TODAY, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FEATURES?

Building a home is a serious thing, and there are a lot of decisions to be made. Every day we get to live in and see a home that is entirely picked out by us personally: our spontaneous navy blue accent island for a pop of color inside, a master bathroom for a spa-like experience, built-in bookshelves to hold some of our favorite memories now and to come, and an open concept living space with modern touches throughout every room.

IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FAMILIES BUILDING A HOME, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Do your research, go to the Parade of Homes and open houses, meet with builders, and figure out “your style,” your wants and needs for now and the future. They will build a high-quality, custom house that feels like “your home” and that you’ll be proud to live in! It’s one of the best investments, and you want it built by experts who make you feel like family!

WHEN SELECTING A BUILDER, WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT BRANTINGHAM BUILDERS?

We first noticed Brantingham Builders from the homes they built and/or displayed in The Parade of Homes. Their homes utterly stood apart from the other homes, in my opinion, because of the detail, curb appeal, quality of construction, and overall beauty of each home we saw.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE HOME-BUILDING PROCESS? AS YOU WALK THROUGH YOUR HOME TODAY, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FEATURES?

We loved how engaged the Brantingaham team was through the entire process; they always kept in contact. Some of my favorite features of our home are the arched window over the stairs and the two sunrooms. I also love the fireplace and how they incorporated the window arches into the design of the built-in bookcases.

IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FAMILIES BUILDING A HOME, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

My advice would be to find a quality builder that has stood the test of time and research their reputation. I found nothing but superb reviews and positive feedback about my builder—all of the positive reviews held true throughout the process. Brantingham Builders is definitely a class act.

WHEN SELECTING A BUILDER, WHAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ABOUT WILL HARRIS HOMES?

When it came to building our dream home, we knew we needed a builder that we could trust. We have worked with Will, and his team, building several homes over the years. With each different project, they were able to help our vision become a reality and exceeded our expectations.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE HOME-BUILDING PROCESS? AS YOU WALK THROUGH YOUR HOME TODAY, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE FEATURES?

The best part of the home-building process is that you get to make it your own. It was important to us to have an open concept with a huge island in the kitchen, which is perfect for entertaining. We love the sliding glass doors in the living room that lead to our screened-in porch. Having enough space so that each of our four children has their own bedroom to make their own was also very important to us.

IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FAMILIES BUILDING A HOME, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Enjoy the process. Over-communicate daily with your builder and their team; it will eliminate stress for both parties.

The Brantingham Market Review

We are so excited to welcome the warmer weather as we head into the hottest market of the year! Spring is here, and we are seeing the housing market continue to hold its own. Days-on-market remains low as we are still in a housing shortage. The list to close is currently 55 days. Homes are maintaining their value, but sellers are not having to compete as much against multiple offers, which makes it a win for both parties. As interest rates bounce around, we can pair you with an excellent lender who can support you by locking in your rate at just the right time. If you are considering selling, looking to buy, or plan to get into investment properties, give us a call! Our team is ready to support you. What a fantastic show of community love! The first annual LOVE Gala was a success raising over $36,000 for Project L.E.A.R.N.

Project L.E.A.R.N. is an adult care facility in our community for disabled adults. The majority of their funding comes from the community, and this event, a partnership of the Lincoln Trail Home Builders Association, Phillips Grove Event Venue, and Elizabethtown Lifestyle, will help with day-to-day operations and muchneeded updates for their facility. We couldn’t have done it without the help of local builders Smith Family Homes, Brantingham Builders, and Will Harris Homes, and an amazing group of donors, vendors, and attendees.

Are you attending events to raise funds in our community this spring? We would love to see what your outfits and all the BTS event photos!

THE OLD ADAGE YOU WANT TO TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THEY’RE FAMILY AND “DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE DONE UNTO YOURSELF” HOLDS TRUE FOR THE CORVINS AND THE WAY THEY DO BUSINESS. WALTER HAD ALWAYS SAID, “AT THE END OF IT ALL, I THINK PEOPLE WOULD THINK I WAS A PRETTY HONEST GUY. YOUR WORD IS YOUR WORTH.”

Corvin’s Floor & Cabinets

As we enter into spring and summer months, you may be considering remodeling your current kitchen, bathrooms, or even the pantry. Or perhaps you’re in the process of building your first home, a custom home, and are tasked with the job of choosing everything from tiles to hardwood, cabinetry styles, and options for the counter tops. We learned that Corvin’s truly has it all. My first contact with Meghan at Corvin’s was a visit with Mary from Smith Family Homes to select tiles for our cabin remodel back in 2019. I assumed that Corvin’s worked with professional builders exclusively, but Corvin’s offers so much more and has something for everyone.

Upon first glimpse, their expansive showroom is a mix of cool and warm hues, muted and bold tones. As you get closer, you can see the carefully selected options and the high quality of each. The showroom is divided into twelve sections: helpful staff, kitchen and bath, counter tops, cabinetry, carpet, hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, commercial, hardware, tile, and decorative area rugs. The layout makes it easy to find just what you need, whether visiting with a professional builder, your interior designer, or planning out a DIY project. We live in a day and age where everything is so fast-paced, and people are rushed, to say the least. One of the most amazing things about walking into Corvin’s is that not only are you greeted by friendly faces and potentially pups, throughout the space there are tables and chairs set up for consultations. These inviting areas are the perfect place to meet, pull together samples, and determine what is needed, all with the help of their staff.

FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED

The fourth generation of Corvins is currently working front and center at their showroom. Corvin’s first began in the 1970s as a general store selling bolts of fabric, hardware and tools, groceries, and you could even get a bologna sandwich. Mr. Walter Corvin was a veteran set to retire in Fort Knox, and his wife Umeko worked with him to open the general store on Vine Street between Radcliff and Vine Grove. At the time, they had four children, and now each child has a store. When he bought the location on Dixie, Corvin’s Flooring opened in 1985, and it is owned by their daughter Jonnie who still works in the store today. Since then, the family business has grown. Tony and Tammy, children of Jonnie and Mike, worked together in today’s location until Tammy moved to Texas and now owns her own flooring store. Today when you walk in Corvin’s Floor & Cabinets, Tony and Meghan and now their son and his wife, Braden and Maura, all work at Corvin’s. In addition, some of their staff are like family; Wayne and Phil have been with the company over thirty years, along with Celeste at twenty-one years and Denise at sixteen. The old adage you want to treat people like they’re family and “do unto others as you would have done unto yourself” holds true for the Corvins and the way they do business. Walter had always said, “at the end of it all, I think people would think I was a pretty honest guy. Your word is your worth.”

81

WORKING WITH CORVIN’S

The process will vary based on your needs. Corvin’s is not about cookie-cutter anything. Their offerings are as unique as their clientele. The process typically begins with a showroom visit. While they accept walk-ins, it is best to make an appointment to be sure you have a staff member available and dedicated time just for your project. For remodeling projects, photos of your space and measurements are helpful to determine the look and feel plus the quantities of materials needed. Pictures of rooms you love, whether kitchen, bath, closet, or pantry, will offer direction and insight into your style.

Walk around the showroom and gather ideas on what you like. A staff member will visit with you to help determine the quantities of materials you need and answer any questions. They have a great selection of in-stock hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and tile, laminate, carpet, and tile available to come in and purchase and take with you that day if needed. Specialty items can be ordered. Tony and Meghan work with their staff when buying for the store. It is important to work together to bring in a fresh look and keep up with current trends. With technology, clients have access to the newest inspiration between Pinterest, Instagram, and Houzz, and Corvin’s can deliver the most up-todate styles on the market.

While the style of products and their range and selection of offerings stand out, the staff are what really make the difference. They are professionals and know the products. Throughout the process, you have one point of contact. You build a relationship with someone that cares about your needs and cares about the success of your project.

Corvin’s works with a large group of interior designers throughout Kentucky and even in Nashville. In addition, they have strong relationships with builders in the local community. They’re able to collaborate with professionals to give mutual clients the very best in service and design.

If you’re not the DIY type and are not working with a home builder or designer, Corvin’s offers full-service design and installation, whether your home is 100 years old or brand new, awaiting finishes. Services range from basic floor installations to full remodels that may contain all the mechanical elements of a home and all of the finishes. Even though they don’t specialize in drywall or electricity, they have built an amazing network of contractors. These relationships allow them to handle every aspect of projects from A to Z.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY ROOM

Visiting the home of Roy and Linda Keith is truly a treat. Not only was Mr. Keith easy to chat with and welcoming from the moment we walked in the door, but their home is one of the most impressive modern homes I’ve ever seen. While they didn’t build the house, every single room features design elements selected with, sourced by, and installed by Corvin’s. When they say “Where Great Rooms Begin,” they mean every room. If you can dream it, they can make it happen. Whether you’re in the study or the space between the garage and kitchen, the cabinetry and flooring are immaculate, and there is literally a place for everything. I could spend hours getting ready in one of these bathrooms. One of my favorite things I have seen in homes this year is hidden pantries. Seemingly a cabinet on the outside, when you open the doors, you’re surprised and delighted by full rooms complete with unique flooring, natural light, and custom cabinets of course. The master closet in the Keith home is no less magical, with a spot for every handbag and pair of shoes imaginable.

SPECIAL THANKS TO ROY & LINDA KEITH FOR ALLOWING US TO FEATURE THEIR HOME.

“MEGHAN AND TONY, ALONG WITH THEIR DESIGN TEAM, WERE A REAL PLEASURE TO WORK WITH. FROM THE CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PHASE ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE FINISHED PRODUCT. OFF RACES TO THE

THE 2023 KENTUCKY DERBY is upon us

While heading to Churchill Downs is always a blast, we’re getting ready to party here in Hardin County. We paid a visit to our friends over at FINE House & Garden for the best in Derby decor and consulted with local fashionista and influencer Amanda Burris for some outfit inspiration and tips on picking the perfect look for the races. Bluegrass-themed hook pillows shown here. Assorted styles available.

90

COMFORTABLY CONFIDENT, CONFIDENTLY COMFORTABLE

No matter what event you’re going to, confidence is your best accessory. Because days at the track can be prolonged with lots of walking, comfortability is also essential. No matter how large your hat is or how elaborate your fascinator is, I guarantee you will look nothing short of amazing. In the end, comfortability, and confidence are key, so wear whatever makes you feel best dressed.

FASCINATOR FACTS

amanda burris // TYPE A STYLE

It may be the greatest two minutes in sports, but it is also prime time for high fashion. Some come for the bets and mint juleps, but the real showstopper is the fascinating derby headwear. I BET you will be the best-dressed Derby queen after you follow my tips below on how to style your race day headwear.

HAT OR FASCINATOR? THAT IS THE QUESTION

Sizes vary between both, and there is even a blend between the two known as a hatinator, like the red one I’m wearing here. Typically, one prefers a hat or a fascinator; there is no in-between. For some, it is based on personal preference; for others, the decision relies on face shape. For a round or square-shaped faced, I recommend a large-brim hat. If you are oval-shaped like me, a hatinator or a large fascinator placed to one side is best. And if you’re heart-shaped, well, you can pretty much wear what your heart desires. Keep in mind, these are by no means laws of the Derby, but instead recommendations. Therefore, wear what makes YOU feel the best.

WHICH CAME FIRST, THE FASCINATOR OR THE DRESS?

And the biggest debate of the Kentucky Derby: Which do you pick first, the outfit or the hat? Unfortunately, the answer is unclear and very situational. I tend to lean more towards finding my outfit first, and then deciding which headpiece pairs best. With hat makers like Magnolia Millinery, the options are endless! She is able to custom-make any piece for you based on your outfit. If you need inspiration, head over to my Instagram at @type.a.style.

In some circumstances, you might find a headpiece that wins you over, which is OK too! In these instances, I recommend searching for a more simple style a singular-colored dress to make your outfit hunting less stressful.

COLORS, FLORALS & PATTERNS, OH MY!

No matter what color scheme or pattern your outfit is, there is always a headpiece that will match perfectly. A solid color dress can create a blank canvas, perfect for an elaborate hat or fascinator. Run for the roses.... And the tulips, daffodils, peonies and dahlias! Floral patterns are all the rage during Derby season. So why not rock what’s in with a floral dress? It is super easy to coordinate a floral dress when it comes to a Derby headpiece, with lots of flowers and colors to choose from. You can even take it to the next level with fun patterns or materials. Tweed, polka dots, satin, or even faux leather—the options are endless when it comes to Derby fashion.

HATS & FASCINATORS BY MAGNOLIA MILLINERY

SPECIAL THANKS TO JIMMY AND MISSY JENKINS FOR INVITING US TO HIGHLAND SOD FARM FOR OUR LATEST DERBY FEATURE. IN APRIL 2019, THE VERY FIRST PHOTO SHOOT FOR ELIZABETHTOWN LIFESTYLE TOOK PLACE AT THEIR FARM. www.highlandsodfarms.com

COLOR CONTEXT

Very Peri may have been the 2022 Pantone Color of the Year, but we are seeing blue-purple and lavender tones come through in home decor and couldn’t love it more. Pantone describes it as “a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone that blends the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red.” Very Peri pairs perfectly with red roses and pale spring blues. If you’re looking to be ahead of the curve, Viva Magenta is the chosen color for 2023; however, we prefer the more subtle muted tones of periwinkle and lavender over hot pink.

PADDOCK PARTY

Classic Churchill Downs cocktails are lilies and juleps, but even if you don’t drink, you can still get in the Derby spirit. FINE sells the best in Mint Julep Suga r and Woodford Reserve Mint Julep Cocktail Syrup plus sugar cubes, perfect for a quick solution. My favorite Derby mocktail is a 1:1:1 combo of ginger ale, simple syrup, and water; to get the full effect, be sure to serve in a silver julep cup, use crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint. For a non-alcoholic lily, mix cranberry juice and Monin orange syrup 4:1, plus a half ounce of each simple syrup and fresh-squeezed lemon juice; garnish with a lemon wheel and blackberry. Tea towels and cocktail napkins are a must for your kitchen or bar. I love the Embroidered Race Napkins that easily double as coasters shown here.

HORSE HOME HOW TO

Adding fun touches throughout your home has never been easier, and when shopping for Derby decor, you’ll be in horse heaven at FINE House & Garden. We invest in seasonal decor; I pick pieces based on their ability to make it through the season and into the next. Horses and jockeys are commonplace in the Bluegrass State, so anything you’re buying can be displayed through the Fourth of July or even into fall.

Selecting two or three themed accents per room will give your family and guests festive vibes as they walk through key spaces. Hook pillows are a textured favorite, and Ange has them available for every holiday, so they’re easy to swap out throughout the year. From wrought iron horseshoes to racing figurines, choose items that bring you joy when adding to end tables. For beds and coffee tables, we like to use large baskets and trays as a catch-all but mix in themed books and baubles for a festive feel. Linnea Crushed Mint c\ Candles smell divine and mint-anything is splendid during Derby.

My favorites from this editorial is the Paddock Scene Linen Table Runner. We used the runner as a base for the design and then added paper place mats, sweet Embroidered Tassel Napkins, a mix of old Derby glasses, and Multicolor Drinking Glasses

A Q & A with Michelle Estes, Baptist Health Hardin’s Director of Obstetrics

Michelle Estes, BSN, RN, C-EFM, is the director of obstetrics for Baptist Health Hardin’s Birthplace. A native of Hardin County, Estes began working as an obstetrics nurse (OB) in 1998 before transitioning to hospital leadership. We caught up with her to discuss Birthplace’s care of mothers and babies in central Kentucky.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR PASSION FOR MOTHER/BABY CARE.

My first nursing job was in obstetrics. I was lucky to find my passion early-on and am proud to still work in women’s health for 25 years later. A great deal of the obstetrics profession is women helping women. Many of us in this field, including myself, are mothers. We can empathize with our patients because we’ve been in their shoes. I get a lot of joy out of this field. I’ve been present alongside countless mothers who have given birth, and each delivery is a miracle. Being there with a mother as she experiences one of life’s most significant moments is incredible.

BAPTIST HEALTH HARDIN HAS LONG BEEN ONE OF KENTUCKY’S TOP DELIVERING HOSPITALS. WHAT EXCITING NEW THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT BIRTHPLACE AND WHAT SERVICES ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

In August 2022, Baptist Health Hardin introduced our new OB hospitalist program. There is now an OB provider available 24/7. Patients still can plan for their personal physician to deliver, but an OB hospitalist will be available if the situation is urgent. This provides patients and families peace of mind during this critical time in their lives.

Birthplace also supports new and expectant mothers by offering online prenatal classes and in-person tours of Birthplace. Our lactation nurses work to ensure mothers can breastfeed both before and after discharge. It’s important to provide the best possible care for every mother where they are.

RACHEL COOMER, DO, OB/GYN AND HARDIN COUNTY NATIVE, RECENTLY JOINED THE TEAM. TELL US ABOUT HER AND HOW SPECIAL IT IS TO CARE FOR YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND NEIGHBORS.

Dr. Coomer came home to practice last year and joined a wonderful team of physicians and advanced practice clinicians. Dr. Coomer and I have both experienced the unique rewards that come from serving patients in our home community. Serving neighbors, friends and family members is especially gratifying. She is well-loved by her patients. It has been a joy to work with her.

TELL US ABOUT THE SERVICES AVAILABLE IN THE LEVEL II NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU) AND HOW THE LEVEL II NICU HAS IMPACTED OVERALL CARE FOR ALL MOTHERS AND BABIES.

Our Level II NICU is a phenomenal service for our region because it does so much to keep mothers and their babies together. It can be a scary time for parents when their baby requires extra care due to breathing issues, feeding challenges, and regulating body temperature. Having a Level II NICU close to home makes a big difference for families. NICU patients receive a variety of therapy services including respiratory, physical, and speech consults for babies with feeding difficulties.

HOW DOES BAPTIST HEALTH FOUNDATION HARDIN SUPPORT THE NICU AND BIRTHPLACE?

The foundation has been our partner in establishing the Level II NICU and funding the equipment to operate it. Over the years, the foundation has provided more than $1 million in new equipment for the Level II NICU and Birthplace. Most recently, they funded a rapid infuser for babies and mothers as well as a NICU ventilator. They have also helped Birthplace secure multiple grants from WHAS Crusade for Children and Kosair for Kids (formerly Kosair Charities) to support the care we provide.

Birthplace is committed to providing great care for our mothers and babies, which would not be possible without the support of the Baptist Health Foundation Hardin.

Breaking Dirt Works Unlimited: Hardin County’s Premier Site Development Contractor Ground

You have seen the trucks driving around town. Maybe you’ve even seen their signs sitting outside a construction zone. Their employees have probably talked to you during lunch. You’re thinking to yourself, “I see those guys everywhere.” But who is Dirt Works Unlimited and what do they do?

Dirt Works Unlimited is a full-service site work and utility contractor, servicing Hardin County and Central Kentucky. They see major projects through all aspects of site preparation, from land clearing to paving asphalt. They offer a variety of services, including excavation, utility construction, and finishing services.

Currently, Dirt Works Unlimited has a team of over 40 employees and over 70 pieces of equipment, making them capable of handling large-scale projects such as single-family and multi-family housing developments, industrial and commercial

buildings, and large municipal projects. They have been the contractor of choice on many of these large-scale projects in the local area, including:

• Menards

• Signature HealthCare Assisted Living in Elizabethtown

• The Landings in Vine Grove

• Radcliff Taco Bell

• The NEW Kort Physical Therapy in Elizabethtown

• Downtown Vine Grove Main Street Drainage

These projects were all managed by Hardin County native, Aaron Gatlin. Gatlin is a 2013 graduate of John Hardin High School. He then attended Western Kentucky University, graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science and Engineering degree.

DIRT WORKS UNLIMITED IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY ELTON YOUART OF BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY.

“I’ve had a passion for construction from a young age. My dad has always been in the construction trade, so I grew up watching him and working with him. I’ve always enjoyed seeing hard work and determination turn into a tangible reward for those efforts,” Gatlin stated.

Gatlin has been with the company for nearly two years in the role of Project Manager; managing and overseeing hundreds of projects throughout the region.

“I enjoy contributing to the growth of the county and leaving a positive impact by creating successful projects for our clients and community to enjoy,” says Gatlin about why he enjoys working on Dirt Works’ projects in Hardin County.

Gatlin’s favorite project he’s been a part of is the Reserve at Cool Springs Apartments at the intersection of Ring Road and Shepherdsville Road. His family’s farm is just a few miles north of the project, so he has driven by the property his whole life. “I’m proud to be a part of turning this vacant property into a high-quality multi-family development, which will spur more growth in this area of the community,” Gatlin said.

According to Gatlin, Dirt Works does things differently than other contractors in the area. They make every project a priority to ensure quality and performance. They focus on their clients’ needs and strive to make every project a successful one for their clients.

“A mantra typically heard in the construction industry is ‘this is how we’ve always done it’. Here at Dirt Works, we don’t believe in this saying and are constantly looking at ways to improve our processes to give all stakeholders on our projects the best possible product,” Gatlin stated.

Dirt Works Unlimited utilizes local partners on their projects, including:

Some things, such as fine Kentucky bourbon and wine, just get better with age. This holds true for Saint James Catholic School’s Black & White Knight Gala, which celebrated its 10th anniversary on Feb. 4. After a two-year hiatus, the event made a comeback in 2023, and included a delectable feast, as well as live and silent auctions, a raffle, plenty of dancing, and of course, some bourbon and wine. What’s even more noteworthy is that the earnings from the gala will be utilized to enhance Saint James’ ability to provide the finest possible Catholic education to its students.

The well-attended event started off with bidding on silent auctions, followed by a delicious meal that was blessed by Saint James Catholic Church Pastor Father Michael Wimsatt. As the guests arrived, they were welcomed by a champagne wall and presented with a complimentary glass of champagne, perfectly matching the event’s “Bourbon and Bubbles” theme. Guests were also able to have their photo taken at the MOD booth throughout the evening.

After the meal, SJS gave out the inaugural Sen. Joe Prather Distinguished Alumni Award, which fittingly was given to the award’s namesake. It was outstanding to hear about all the noble work Joe Prather has done in the community and in the Commonwealth, from his service as a Kentucky senator and representative to his work on community organizations such as the Baptist Health Foundation Hardin Board of Directors and at Saint James Catholic Church. A student of Elizabethtown Catholic High School, Sen. Prather is a model of kindness and success here in our community, and it is clear that his Catholic education had a significant influence on his life.

Later in the night, guests could bid on live auction items donated by area businesses and individuals, from an ultimate bourbon package to travel bundles to a guitar signed by country music legends. Next, the grand raffle prize, a 2022 Honda Pioneer 520 from Dan Powers Honda Motorsports, was given away to a lucky winner. To round out the evening, attendees enjoyed a night of dancing until midnight.

The money raised through the silent and live auctions helps provide SJS with the necessary equipment and items needed to provide a quality education, keep faculty salaries competitive, and continue the school’s tradition of Faith, Excellence and Community. In total, the net proceeds from the event were $120,000.

SJS parent Rachel O’Neil shared some thoughts on the event that truly sum up how important these fundraising efforts are.

“My favorite thing about this event is the money the school raises to better provide an outstanding education for our kids,” she said. “As a private school without the financial support public schools receive, we must work hard to maintain the excellence of our institution. This well-organized event is a testament to the dedication and effort of our community. Being part of a Catholic school community is truly something special.”

The gala left a strong impression on me, especially regarding the dedication of the event’s sponsors and organizing committee who made it all possible. The Black & White Knight Gala has become a tradition to look forward to each year; an event that is equal parts elegant and essential.

EAT ELIZABETHTOWN RESTAURANT WEEK OVERVIEW

If you know me or even just follow my personal Instagram, you know that I love restaurants. From the moment we moved to Elizabethtown, we began scoping out dine-in dinner locales. EAT Elizabethtown Restaurant Week was a new event for our area. Our city has never hosted a restaurant week, and many of the people I spoke with had never ventured to be a part of restaurant weeks while traveling. Because our restaurants vary widely, we mimicked Denver Restaurant Week, which I’ve attended a couple of times. Each restaurant committed to serving a different specialty menu item over the ten days. We did not pre-sell tickets as prices would vary for each location; we wanted to ensure success by keeping it simple.

The point of EAT Elizabethtown Restaurant Week was to drive business to local restaurants during what is typically a slow time of year after the holidays and also to promote our sponsors—Dowan Law

Offices and Swope Family of Dealerships—who donated to Silverleaf Sexual Trauma Recovery Services in honor of the event. Menus bearing sponsor logos were passed out with regular menus at each location and circulated between thousands of patrons who visited the eighteen participating restaurants, bars, and coffee and dessert shops. Because the menus included featured items from each place, we were able to create a cross-pollination of restaurant regulars.

The event lasted from January 7th through the 15th and kicked off Friday, January 6th, with a party at Cavern Club, complete with delicious Boundary Oaks Distillery cocktails and pizza from Impellizzeri’s. The party was intimate, with under 75 guests. Issue 14 of Elizabethtown Lifestyle released, Marnie with Clagett Photography took photos, and Silverleaf’s Executive Director Jillian Carden, Psy.D., spoke about the critical work taking place at Silverleaf.

For 2024, we have space for ten sponsors and are planning another 10-day EAT Elizabethtown Restaurant Week. The event will continue to benefit Silverleaf.
