SITE ANALYSIS Specific Site: 243 New ST., Brighton Vic 3186, Australia Brighton is an affluent coastal suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It has a bayside beach. The location is only a few blocks away from the beach and nearby restaurants, bus stops, and shopping.
Victoria, Australia
Melbourne
01
Melbourne is the capital and most-populous city of the Australian state of Victoria. Victoria is in the southeastern coast of Australia and is well known for its beautiful beaches and cliff jumping sites. One of the most popular beaches in Melbourne is Brighton Beach, near Melbourne’s central business district. The goal of my design is to take the beautiful landscape of the less inhabited, more preserved natural areas of Victoria that are tourist attractions and incorporate them into the design of my more citycentered hotel to inform visitors of the importance to respect and protect these important natural landscapes.
BUILDING ANALYSIS This building is very interesting as the north and south walls are at an angle, while the east and west are perpendicular with the street. The columns located throughout the floor plan lack a true pattern to their placement. • 36,000 square feet • 4 floors • Rooftop • One main staircase • Main exit and seconday exit

CONCEPT
Weaving the landscape of the coast created by the ocean into the space by focusing on the energetic horizontal movements effect on the vertical solid elements.
03
I studied the forms created by the ocean along the coast of Australia. Cliffs along the entire coast of Victoria, Australia are eroded by wave action that concentrates energy in these areas. The energy continues from the horizontal movement of the ocean through the beach and gently erodes the sand creating organic, soft tide marks. As the energy from the ocean meets the cliff edges, however, it strikes the static vertical element and then disperses. This striking energy is what creates the rigid forms on the cliffs. These rigid forms of the cliffs contrast greatly with the soft edges of the beach tide marks. Looking specifically at the Twelve Apostles, located in the Port Campbell National Park, we can see erosion on the cliff side done by the powerful ocean. The Twelve Apostles were originally arches made in the cliff side, that have now become seven standing sea stacks of limestone, that are continuously being broken down by the ocean waves. This contrast in the soft tide marks created by the energetic horizontal movement of the ocean over the beach and the rigid cliff side forms created by static solid elements of the cliffs and sea stacks that stop the movement of energy, can be translated into the design of the space. Waves move towards the coastline at an angle, causing longshore drift and then return to the ocean in a straight motion. This can be shown in the design through a strong diagonal main path of travel through the space but keeping the rest of the space open to allow free movement of the ocean and an airy, soft feel of the beach. The pathway will lead to a static vertical wall to represents the cliff side. This will be the location of the elevator and staircase, just as the energy of the ocean is meeting the vertical element and moving upwards. The columns throughout the open space can symbolize the sea stacks of the Twelve Apostles located throughout the ocean.
DIAGRAMMING THE LANDSCAPE I used the Twelve Apostles, located in the Port Campbell National Park, as an inspiration / example of natural landscapes in Victoria, Australia that should be preserved. The floor plan incorporates the diagonal movement of the ocean as the main path of travel into the space towards the buffer zone, which represents the beach. The remainder of the space is open for fluid movement of water, and using the columns throughout the open space to symbolize the sea stacks. The elevator is where the cliff or private zone meets the ocean to symbolize the movement going upwards as it hits the cliff. Static, vertical elements where the energy hits - cliff Private space Horizontal open space - beach Buffer zone spaces Horizontal energetic movement ocean movement Path of travel Energetic areas - ocean Public space and guest rooms Columns in the building that can represent the apostles in the ocean

As guest enter the front door, they are met with the recepetion desk that includes both a universally accessibile and high top side. The wall that carries the guest into the space features an abstract design of tide marks that includes a light feature. From this space, the guest can see the cliff wall and limestone stack with waiting area seating around it.

ANNOTATIONS Coloring Concept: As one moves vertically through the hotel, the color scheme changes from very blue based to symbolize the ocean, to more neutral and greens to symbolize the cliff side. This can be seen through the mostly blue lobby and restaurant to more green-blue with tans in guest rooms to tans and greens on the rooftop.

COVID-19 Thesis Focus: • Clay wall plasters are used for the lower half of the wallcoverings in the restaurant. These walls can be used to regulate humidity of the indoor environment, which can minimize mold and fungal growth and absorb odors. • Clear barriers are used in close proximity seating and at the reception. Remainder of the seating is spaced six feet apart for social distancing. Sustainability Thesis Focus: • Forbo, based in Melbourne, Australia, has a line of vinyl flooring named “SafeStep r12” that is high slip resistant made from at least 70% recycled materials. These floors have been used in the kitchen and spa. • To enhance the sustainability of my design, local brands based in Melbourne were used for some of the lighting, furniture, and flooring throughout the project.

PRIMARY GUEST ROOM CONFIGURATIONS
King Suite Guest - Axon ANNOTATIONS COVID-19 Thesis Focus: • Linoleum is made of natural materials that have bacteria-killing properties and are hyoallergenic. Linoleum is used in all the bathrooms throughout the hotel. • Copper, brass, and bronze have be used on smaller objects that are high contact, such as faucets and door handles. These materials are naturally anti-microbial materials and eliminate 99.9% of bacteria from surfaces in less than two hours. Sustainability Thesis Focus: • Forbo’s Linoleum flooring lines are natural floors made from raw materials and are biodegradable. The product range is CO2 Neutral Resilient. • Interface flooring was used for the majority of the flooring in this project. All the Interface flooring lines used in this project are certified Carbon Neutral floors, which means they help offset the full life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the carbon footprint created while making these products.
