SECTION + PLAN Early in the semester, we were tasked with sketching a section and plan for a small cabin. I was inspired by the sand dunes of Pentwater, Michigan to create a tiny home on tree-like stilts. It would be resistant to the tides and flooding, while bringing the home as close as possible to the shoreline.

NESTED FORM In this assignment, I explored easily assembled, simple structures that could blur interior and exterior space. We utilized the massing tool in Revit, learned about Enscape’s polystyrol mode, and practiced photo retouching with brushes in Photoshop.

ELEVATED LANDSCAPE These sketches outline the initial design for a brewery, social event space, and nature preserve spanning a 33-acre lot in Maplewood, Minnesota. By integrating production and public social spaces, the building aims to be self-sustaining while also enhancing the quality of life of its users. The addition of an elevated walkway ensures easy site navigation without disrupting local ecological habitats. The central goal of this project is to showcase that spaces designed with a focus on maximizing human life can also enhance ecological health when we consider both in the design process.

DIAGRAMMING My building design integrates the form from my massing assignment while also featuring flat green roofs. To visualize this assembly, I sketched out the rough composition of a green roof. The green roof comprises various layers, including the growing medium, an irrigation system, and plants native to the local ecoregion. An aggregate perimeter serves as ballast, while a drainage layer safeguards the roof structure from potential damage caused by water or roots.

In the walls below, overhead bifolding doors blur the transition between indoor and outdoor space during warm summer months, while still providing usable space through cold winters.
