Seattle lies on a narrow strip of land between the salt waters of Puget Sound and the fresh waters of Lake Washington. Beyond the waters lie two rugged mountain ranges, the Olympics to the west and the Cascades to the east. It is a city built on hills and around water, in a mild marine climate that encourages prolific vegetation and abundant natural resources. It was nicknamed “The Emerald City” by tourism officials due to the lush green forests and 6,000 acres of parks within the city limits. With a temperate climate and a clear definition between seasons, Seattle has the best of both worlds. In the winter, residents travel to the mountains, no so far in the distance, to go skiing or snowboarding. In the summer, Seattleites visit one of the many beaches and parks to experience the fresh outdoors. Seattle’s music scene has always been notable, with the origins of bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Tourists and Seattleites can visit the Experience Music Project for different exhibits about musical geniuses and visit the Seattle Center right next door for some concerts and food.
