ESCAPE
The Story of Long Lake Provincial Park AN URBAN
On a crisp morning in Halifax, as the first light of dawn began to dance on the surface of Witherod Lake, Emily laced up her hiking boots, ready for an adventure that had become her weekend ritual. The hustle and bustle of the city seemed worlds away as she stepped into Long Lake Provincial Park, a sprawling 2,095-hectare sanctuary nestled on the outskirts of downtown Halifax
Emily had discovered this urban oasis a few years ago, shortly after the opening of the Lakeview Trail in 2016 The trail, a 5-kilometer loop, quickly became her favorite escape As she began her walk, the gravel path crunched softly underfoot, and the wide, 2-meter pathway allowed her to lose herself in the serenity without worrying about the occasional cyclist or fellow hiker passing by
Long Lake Provincial Park is just a 2 minute walk from Bald Eagle Pl.
Every 200 meters or so, Emily passed benches inviting her to sit and soak in the tranquil views. The park’s thoughtful design, with these rest stops, washrooms, and ample parking, made it a haven for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors without the hassle of a long drive But Emily preferred to keep moving, letting the peaceful scenery wash over her as she circled the lake.
On particularly adventurous days, Emily would veer off the main path and tackle the Pipeline Trail Loop This 3-kilometer, narrow trail presented a more rugged challenge, often requiring careful navigation through muddy sections and dense underbrush It was on these trails that Emily truly felt at one with nature, with the sounds of civilization fading into the background
Emily wasn’t alone in her love for Long Lake Provincial Park On weekends, families, dog walkers, and paddlers joined her, each finding their own piece of tranquility In the summer, she often saw children splashing in the designated swimming areas while their parents lounged on the shore, and in winter, the park transformed into a playground for snowshoeing and ice skating enthusiasts
Bird watchers, too, found joy here. Emily would sometimes stop to chat with them, learning about the different species that called the park home. Fishing enthusiasts lined the shores, casting their lines into the cool, clear waters, hopeful for a catch
The park’s appeal was not just in its beauty, but in its community spirit. Managed by the Halifax Regional Municipality and supported by local conservation efforts, Long Lake was a testament to the dedication of those who cherished these green spaces Emily often participated in community clean-ups and conservation events, feeling a deep connection to this slice of wilderness within the city
As she completed her loop around Witherod Lake and made her way back to the parking lot, Emily felt rejuvenated. Long Lake Provincial Park was more than just a park; it was a sanctuary, a place where the stresses of urban life melted away, replaced by the simple joys of nature Each visit was a reminder of the natural beauty that lay just beyond the city’s edge, waiting to be explored
