Hello and welcome to the September edition.

September marks the coming of Autumn, which I always look forward to. I do love the Autumnal colours and we live in such a beautiful part of the world to see the changes in the trees and landscapes.

The next few months sees lots of great events happening - Barnstaple in Bloom, Mission Unbreakable, Over and Above’s Late Summer Ball as well as The Incredible Coast Path Challenge which is happening next year. If you want to take part in this epic challenge you need to hurry up and get a space as they are very limited.

We hope that whatever you are planning on doing during September, you have a lovely time. Good luck to all those of you starting new schools, colleges and uni’s. Take care of yourselves and see you next month ..

Did you know that Barnstaple in Bloom is holding its first Open Horticultural Show?

Sunday 10th September.

St John’s Community Hall (Next to Tesco) Rose Lane, Barnstaple

There are several classes to enter including floral art, baking, photography, crafts, and children’s categories.

Many of us enjoy Gardener’s World and grow a few vegetables including tomatoes and salads. Now is your chance to show your efforts in our friendly and welcoming event.

If you love baking cakes and quiches, there is a section for you too and for photographers, there are two sections to enter.

Following the pandemic, we realise that strong communities, with shared interests and efforts, are the best way to bring us all back together and this show is designed to do just that!

Tell all your friends and family and spread the word. Come and be part of this community!

The list of classes to enter can be emailed to you or a hard copy obtained from Barum House, the Library or St John’s Garden Centre.

We need to know who is entering by August 20th, 2023, this can be extended if you let us know.

FEATURE WRITER INSPIRES BIOGRAPHIES

A biography writer from North Devon is offering help to anyone who would like to write their life story.

Carolyn Thomas, from Bideford, is keen to inspire people to write down their memories and preserve them for younger generations.

“It's important memories are not lost forever so I'm giving talks to community groups and offering a 'Helping Hand' to people who would love to record their own life-story but aren't sure how to go about it,” said Carolyn, aged 55, a former journalist. She runs her own business called Our Family Memories, which primarily produces personal books for families.

“I started Our Family Memories during lockdown after creating a biography for my own parents, which included their favourite photographs,” she explained.

“I've since produced books for a number of clients who've been delighted to see their life stories in print and been able to pass copies onto their children and grandchildren.”

Carolyn has now launched her 'Helping Hand' service to encourage more people to write down their own memories by giving them support through the process and helping to keep them on track.

“You don't have to have had a dramatic or adventurous life. You don't need to be rich or famous to create an biography. Everyone's story is a unique social history of a time never to be repeated,” she explained.

“Your upbringing will inevitably be different to that of today's younger generation, who perhaps fail to comprehend a world without mobile phones and the internet.”

One client, Denis, had started to write his own life-story in a notebook 10 years ago but gave up due to failing eyesight. He engaged Carolyn to create his biography hoping that his six grandchildren might read it and enjoy stories about his childhood in Devon and his army career.

Carolyn said: “When I was interviewing Denis, who is now 87, he sometimes mentioned that he wasn't sure his grandchildren would be interested in the book but he wanted to complete the project anyway.” “Then recently, he told me his grandson spent the whole day quizzing him about his life in more detail having been fascinated by the biography and all the photographs it contained.”

Bronwen, aged 82, was another of Carolyn's clients. She had spent all her life living in the same village. Her daughter Amelia commissioned the book and said: “One of the most gratifying things was how it shifted my mother's view of herself. She moved from 'Well, I'm just ordinary, who would be interested?' towards feeling that her journey through life is part of the texture of social history."

‘UNBREAKABLES’ NEEDED TO TACKLE BIGGEST EVER COMMANDO COURSE FOR NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

10km of obstacles, mud, marsh, rivers, and hills await those brave enough to sign up to North Devon Hospice’s Mission: Unbreakable event, taking place on 15th October. The popular commando course challenge launched this week, with organisers promising more obstacles than ever before, to really test the mettle of those wanting to become an ‘Unbreakable’.

But everyone who steps up to take on the Mission: Unbreakable course will be doing so for a good reason, with all proceeds going towards the vital care that North Devon Hospice provides to people at home.

“We need you to ditch your comfort zone, to help keep hospice patients comfortable in their own homes,” said Lisa Mackenzie, Events Manager at the hospice. “The vast majority of people we look after want to be in the familiar surroundings of their home, and our care teams can make that happen, but only with your support. Sign up to Mission: Unbreakable today and help those with a life-limiting illness, like cancer, to be as comfortable as possible in the place that means the most to them.”

Sponsored by Wollens, Mission: Unbreakable is a commando challenge with a difference, as the course is designed with 2 4 Commando Royal Engineers from RMB Chivenor. Lisa said, “We’re proud to announce that this year’s course will be the biggest ever, with more obstacles than ever before. So even if you’ve taken part in previous years and think you know Mission: Unbreakable, think again! We’re looking forward to announcing each new obstacle on social media in the coming weeks, and we’ve got some absolute beauties to unveil!”

The event has become famous for challenges such as ‘The Sheep Dip’, a fully submerged tunnel crawl, and ‘Freezing Private Ryan’, where competitors wade through chest-high icefilled water. Among the dozens of other obstacles are a mud crawl under barbed wire, an upstream river wade, and a leap over raging fire pits.

Lisa added, “While this year’s course will be tough, I’m always amazed at how people push themselves to rise to the challenge. Even those who don’t consider themselves fit find something inside to dig deep and achieve something they never thought they could. Every person who signs up will be helping local people in their time of need. The demand for hospice care is rising fast, but in this climate, donations to the charity have dropped dramatically. So, we can only be there, to give dignity and comfort at the most crucial time, with your support.”

Children’s Hospice South West launches Incredible Hike coast path challenge!

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) are calling for people to lace up their walking boots and take on the Incredible Hike in May 2024.

The charity’s Incredible Hike challenge is a guided 3-day walk from Friday 17 May to Sunday 19 May 2024, totalling 60 miles along the South West Coast Path from Minehead to Croyde. With only 50 places available, this is going to be a sell-out event. Participants can return to walk year on year to complete the entire 630 miles of National Trail, while raising money for children and young people living with life-limiting conditions. CHSW’s Incredible Hike is designed to offer a challenge to walkers and hikers of all abilities. A good level of fitness is required in time for the event, as each day participants will be walking around 20 miles, for up to 9 hours, incorporating several hills and potentially rough terrain. Walkers are expected to raise the suggested minimum sponsorship of £1,000. The registration fee of £350 covers the cost of the event support, hotel stays, food and Hike apparel.

Kate Romo, Event Fundraiser for CHSW said: “I am beyond excited by the Incredible Hike and I can’t wait to start walking! “This is such an incredible event in so many ways, we are guiding the walk over 3 days and every year we’ll pick up where we left off, eventually completing the whole of the South West Coast Path! “We’re hoping to raise around £50,000 to care and support for children and young people across the South West.”

The charity’s three hospices – Little Bridge House in North Devon, Charlton Farm near Bristol, and Little Harbour in Cornwall – provide a safe haven of care, support and friendship for more than 500 children with lifelimiting conditions and their families across the South West.

Kate continued; “With only 50 places available, if you want to take part I really do advise registering early. “You can register on our website and secure your place with an £175 deposit. Our 50 Incredible Hikers are going to make such a phenomenal difference to those families who receive our care. We can’t wait to meet them all!”

North Devon historic home to host evening of glitz and glamour in aid of hospital charity

An evening of glitz, glamour and giving is being held at one of North Devon’s most historic homes in aid of the Over and Above. The hospital charity’s Late Summer Ball takes place at Tawstock Court near Barnstaple on September 16 and tickets are on sale now.

Guests will enjoy drinks, canapés and live music on the lawns with Miniature Violinist, Rebecca Balzani Barrow, before heading inside the recently renovated Georgian manor house for a two-course dinner.

The black-tie event, compered by local media personality Seth Conway, will also feature a live charity auction, followed by music and dancing to Bicycle Repair Man.

Josh Allan, fundraising manager for Over and Above, said the event promised to be the perfect seasonal sundowner with a twist of glamour and historic period charm.

“Our Late Summer Ball promises to be a very special evening in one of North Devon’s most special buildings,” he said. “The event is a great way to get together with friends and raise some money to help our hospital go the extra mile for local patients and their families.

“We’re very grateful to Blue Elephant Childcare for kindly sponsoring our Late Summer Ball, meaning the event will go even further to enhance local healthcare.”
