Children’s Hospice South West launches Incredible Hike coast path challenge!

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) are calling for people to lace up their walking boots and take on the Incredible Hike in May 2024.

The charity’s Incredible Hike challenge is a guided 3-day walk from Friday 17 May to Sunday 19 May 2024, totalling 60 miles along the South West Coast Path from Minehead to Croyde. With only 50 places available, this is going to be a sell-out event. Participants can return to walk year on year to complete the entire 630 miles of National Trail, while raising money for children and young people living with life-limiting conditions. CHSW’s Incredible Hike is designed to offer a challenge to walkers and hikers of all abilities. A good level of fitness is required in time for the event, as each day participants will be walking around 20 miles, for up to 9 hours, incorporating several hills and potentially rough terrain. Walkers are expected to raise the suggested minimum sponsorship of £1,000. The registration fee of £350 covers the cost of the event support, hotel stays, food and Hike apparel.

Kate Romo, Event Fundraiser for CHSW said: “I am beyond excited by the Incredible Hike and I can’t wait to start walking! “This is such an incredible event in so many ways, we are guiding the walk over 3 days and every year we’ll pick up where we left off, eventually completing the whole of the South West Coast Path! “We’re hoping to raise around £50,000 to care and support for children and young people across the South West.”

The charity’s three hospices – Little Bridge House in North Devon, Charlton Farm near Bristol, and Little Harbour in Cornwall – provide a safe haven of care, support and friendship for more than 500 children with lifelimiting conditions and their families across the South West.

Kate continued; “With only 50 places available, if you want to take part I really do advise registering early. “You can register on our website and secure your place with an £175 deposit. Our 50 Incredible Hikers are going to make such a phenomenal difference to those families who receive our care. We can’t wait to meet them all!”

Warmer evenings brings many temptations which can be enjoyed safely (ice cream in moderation, of course!), but the one you must avoid is drinking alcohol and then driving. Any amount of alcohol can impair your judgement enough to cause a tragedy for you, your family or for other innocent road users. The best advice is not one for the road, it’s none for the road. Drink driving is one of the top five causes of death and serious injury on our roads.

You must also be very careful the morning after a session on the booze. Contrary to popular belief, sleep, drinking coffee, taking a shower, eating a full English breakfast - these things do NOT eliminate alcohol from your system. Only time does that: one hour per unit plus another hour from the last drink you had. Even then, this is only a guide. If you don’t feel safe to drive, don’t risk it.

If you are aware of someone breaking the law on the roads, then report it through an online report form

www.devon-cornwall.police.uk with as much detail as you can. Although action may not be taken immediately, your reports help to build an intelligence picture of offending drivers.

** If someone is at immediate risk of causing harm, perhaps through drink or drug driving, call 999. **

You can now be tested for the presence of cocaine or cannabis instantly at the roadside with a simple mouth swab. If you are convicted of driving under the influence of drugs, you could get - minimum 1 year driving ban, unlimited fine, up to 6 months in prison, criminal record. #NoExcuse.

LAUNCHES AT SAUNTON BEACH

Local environmental charity Plastic Free North Devon (PFND) is excited to announce that their 7th Toy Library has been installed at Saunton Beach as part of the Visitor Campaign. Its space themed artwork, created by PFND volunteer Andy Clee and family, encourages everyone to #love your planet and #protect your playground.

The aim of the toy libraries is to provide a resource for families to be part of a ‘circular economy’ when it comes to beach toys - rather than families buying buckets, spades, and polystyrene bodyboards for their holidays and them being abandoned on our beaches, sent to landfill, or just sitting unused at the back of cupboards. Families can borrow beach toys for their holiday and then bring them back at the end of their stay, ready for another family to use.

This latest Toy Library is the 6th installed with funding from the Welcome Back Fund through North Devon Council (seventh in total) benefitting visitors and locals in North Devon beachside locations to protect our coastline. It is located just next to the Beach Hut Hire platform on the beach at Saunton: /// backlog.habits.inversely

Anne-Marie Eveleigh, Operations Director, Plastic Free North Devon, explains more:

“We are so pleased to be able to install the 7th Toy Library at Saunton Beach. With a large volume of tourists and beach goers coming to this beach each year we hope that this will be well used and will help us to reduce the impact of single use beach toys. With the climate crisis and the rising cost of living at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds right now, we’re really grateful for the opportunity to work with our local communities to make a positive difference where we can, one small step at a time.’

Christie Estate spokesperson talks about their support for the project:

‘The Estate is happy to support the installation of a Toy Library which will provide many hours of fun for children enjoying Saunton Sands during the season. As a business supporter of PFND we are pleased to be working alongside the organisation on initiatives which aim to reduce waste on North Devon's beaches."

Our sincerest thanks to the Saunton Beach community and Christie's Estates for supporting the installation of this Toy Library. Specifically we would like to thank the following for offering to be the library guardians: Jules from Saunton Beach Hut Hire, Bridget Allsopp from Saunton Break Cafe, Lucy Tamlyn from Saunton Beach Enterprises and Danii from the Social Swim Group. We would also like to thank the North Devon Council who were able to fund the expansion of this project through the Welcome Back Fund.

The toy libraries are just one way that Plastic Free North Devon’s Visitor Campaign seeks to harness the collective power of local businesses and community to educate and empower visitors to protect and care for the amazing nature right here on our doorstep. The campaign includes resources and ideas for businesses to use to inspire behavioral change, a newly released Sustainable Housekeeping Toolkit for cleaners, property managers and business owners, and a discount on the Protect our Playground sustainable wooden bellyboards for all Visitor Campaign sign ups. Visit www.plasticfreenorthdevon.org/plastic-free-holidays for more information.

North Devon historic home to host evening of glitz and glamour in aid of hospital charity

An evening of glitz, glamour and giving is being held at one of North Devon’s most historic homes in aid of the Over and Above. The hospital charity’s Late Summer Ball takes place at Tawstock Court near Barnstaple on September 16 and tickets are on sale now.

Guests will enjoy drinks, canapés and live music on the lawns with Miniature Violinist, Rebecca Balzani Barrow, before heading inside the recently renovated Georgian manor house for a two-course dinner.

The black-tie event, compered by local media personality Seth Conway, will also feature a live charity auction, followed by music and dancing to Bicycle Repair Man.

Josh Allan, fundraising manager for Over and Above, said the event promised to be the perfect seasonal sundowner with a twist of glamour and historic period charm.

“Our Late Summer Ball promises to be a very special evening in one of North Devon’s most special buildings,” he said. “The event is a great way to get together with friends and raise some money to help our hospital go the extra mile for local patients and their families.

“We’re very grateful to Blue Elephant Childcare for kindly sponsoring our Late Summer Ball, meaning the event will go even further to enhance local healthcare.”

Tickets are £50 per person, or £500 for a table of 10, and are available online at https://overandabove.enthuse.com/cf/late-summer-ball.

When is free not free?

A polite reminder that if you are unable to attend free events and training that you let the organisers know. Why is this so important? Although it is sold as free there is a cost to the funders or people holding the event. Therefore, if you are able to let them know as soon as possible, they can try to fill the place, as the majority of events are over subscribed. Most of the time funding providers ask for post activity reports, so if only 2 out of the 10 people attend it can be deemed as not cost effective. Therefore, when sourcing further funds the likelihood is the answer will be ‘no’. On a positive note, we have secured additional free places for a 4 course, with Early Nourishment. The course will run from Weds 20th September between 10-11am in Braunton. Further details will be sent out on confirmation of a place by Early Nourishment. If you want to be added to a holding list, contact support@livewellinbraunton.co.uk We are currently scheduling a Sports & Activities Directory Roadshow to hand out directories and meet residents of Braunton and it’s surrounding villages. We will be available to offer information or signposting, but will use this opportunity to get the views and ideas of the local residents.

The Community Garden- has taken a step forward.

Live Well in Braunton have secured some funding from the Growing Communities Fund to collaborate with local people & groups to develop a Community Garden. We already have a small list of interested parties but would welcome anyone who would live to assist in getting this project off the ground. The vison is to have a safe green space that people can enjoy and give individuals/groups an opportunity to try out some gardening. The project is in the early developmental stage, but if you think you could help contact: connect@livewellinbraunton.co.uk

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN PROCEEDS TO REFERENDUM

YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN NEEDS YOU TO VOTE ‘YES’ IN

THE REFERENDUM ON 7TH SEPTEMBER

Our Parish Neighbourhood Plan is the result of a partnership between residents of Braunton and Braunton Parish Councillors and is the culmination of a number of years of detailed work.

The Plan sets out the aspirations of residents for the onward development of the Parish of Braunton, addressing the specific areas that were consistently raised by residents through the consultation process and which most influence the development of our community and the character of the Parish within which we live.

The Neighbourhood Plan:

 Promotes affordable housing for local people

 Protects our valued green space and natural environment

£ Supports the local economy

 Maintains the character of the Parish

This is the final stage that our Parish Neighbourhood Plan has to pass so that it can be formally adopted and play an essential role in the future development of Braunton Parish.

By voting ‘YES’ at the referendum in response to the question:

“Do you want North Devon District Council to use the neighbourhood plan for Braunton parish to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?”

Our Parish specific policies will have to be used in the decision-making process.

The Referendum on the 7th September is a local election and poll cards will be sent to residents of the Parish on the Electoral Roll.

The Neighbourhood Plan can be viewed on line at https:// www.brauntonparishneighbourhoodplan.org.uk/the-plan/referendum/

Or look at a printed version at the Parish Council Offices.

George, a 9-year-old Collie crossbreed at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, is looking for his forever home. An affectionate and loving older dog, George had a difficult start to his life – and until recently he had never lived indoors. George is now happily staying in a foster home, as part of our Home from Home scheme, however he would love to find a forever family who could look after him on a permanent basis. George enjoys the simple things in life - whether that is basking in the sunshine, going for walks, or napping on a comfy sofa. He enjoys exploring the countryside with his foster carer, and George is happy to walk in areas where there are other dogs, however he is content to mind his own business and rarely plays. George loves his human friends. He becomes attached and forms strong bonds quickly, particularly with women. He will follow his humans from room to room, but he is getting better and working with his foster carer to improve this.

Elise Watson, Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said:

“Gorgeous George is a sweet boy looking for a calm home environment. Initially, George can be quite cautious and wary. However, once he becomes comfortable, he becomes a little shadow who won’t leave your side! George is the perfect companion for anyone looking to have a dog with them most of the time, be it in the home or out and about.”

Despite being new to a home environment, George is nearly housetrained, and is settling in quickly. He is not a fan of toys, and noises such as squeaks can startle him. George could share his home with children as young as eleven. He is looking to be the only dog in the home; however, he could live with a dog savvy cat. George is happy to travel in the car. He is not used to being left alone, and this will need to be built up gradually.

For more information, or if you think you could offer George a forever home, please visit: https:// www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/ crossbreed/1264626

A very handsome sleek five year old black cat. Sadly Blue had been finding living with another cat and children just all a bit too stressful for him.

He loves human company though and so all he wants is a quiet home where he can enjoy going out into his garden when he feels the need but can then come home to some peace and quiet!

Can you give this lovely boy the home that he needs?

‘UNBREAKABLES’ NEEDED TO TACKLE BIGGEST EVER COMMANDO COURSE FOR NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

10km of obstacles, mud, marsh, rivers, and hills await those brave enough to sign up to North Devon Hospice’s Mission: Unbreakable event, taking place on 15th October. The popular commando course challenge launched this week, with organisers promising more obstacles than ever before, to really test the mettle of those wanting to become an ‘Unbreakable’.

But everyone who steps up to take on the Mission: Unbreakable course will be doing so for a good reason, with all proceeds going towards the vital care that North Devon Hospice provides to people at home.

“We need you to ditch your comfort zone, to help keep hospice patients comfortable in their own homes,” said Lisa Mackenzie, Events Manager at the hospice. “The vast majority of people we look after want to be in the familiar surroundings of their home, and our care teams can make that happen, but only with your support. Sign up to Mission: Unbreakable today and help those with a life-limiting illness, like cancer, to be as comfortable as possible in the place that means the most to them.”

Sponsored by Wollens, Mission: Unbreakable is a commando challenge with a difference, as the course is designed with 2 4 Commando Royal Engineers from RMB Chivenor. Lisa said, “We’re proud to announce that this year’s course will be the biggest ever, with more obstacles than ever before. So even if you’ve taken part in previous years and think you know Mission: Unbreakable, think again! We’re looking forward to announcing each new obstacle on social media in the coming weeks, and we’ve got some absolute beauties to unveil!”

The event has become famous for challenges such as ‘The Sheep Dip’, a fully submerged tunnel crawl, and ‘Freezing Private Ryan’, where competitors wade through chest-high icefilled water. Among the dozens of other obstacles are a mud crawl under barbed wire, an upstream river wade, and a leap over raging fire pits.

Lisa added, “While this year’s course will be tough, I’m always amazed at how people push themselves to rise to the challenge. Even those who don’t consider themselves fit find something inside to dig deep and achieve something they never thought they could. Every person who signs up will be helping local people in their time of need. The demand for hospice care is rising fast, but in this climate, donations to the charity have dropped dramatically. So, we can only be there, to give dignity and comfort at the most crucial time, with your support.”
