FEATURE

Jade Kingdom, 35, our local hero, has become a Guinness World Record holder!

Jade has become the first woman with Down’s syndrome to complete a sprint triathlon.

The challenge on 7th August saw her complete a 750m swim, 12 mile cycle and a 3 mile run in an outstanding time of 2 hours, 39 minutes and 55 seconds.

Normally, Jade would run and swim once a week with a little bit of cycling thrown in for good mix, but for the record attempt her training ramped up to six sessions a week: two swimming, bike and run sessions each.

Jade has undertaken various challenges this year including beating the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway to the top of its cliff in a 500ft (152m) ascent earlier this year.

The next challenge for her will be the Swim Serpentine Super 6, a six mile swim in the Serpentine lake in Hyde Park, London in September, only 50 swimmers can enter this race each year!

Why is Jade doing this?? To raise money for the North Devon Hospice, so far raising an incredible £20,000!

ello and welcome to the September edition.

September marks the coming of Autumn, which I always look forward to but haven’t we had an amazing summer! I do love the Autumnal colours though and we live in such a beautiful part of the world to see the changes in the trees and landscapes.

This month we have some events going on, the Fremington Car Run (page 5) raising money for CHSW and the Children’s Hospice South West themselves are organising a Bear Hunt (page 23), sounds like great fun.

The feature of this month though certainly belongs to our very own Jade Kingdom! A massive well done to you on completing everything that you have put your mind to, we are all routing for you for your September challenge as well.

This month we have a very interesting feature in our Martin Lewis column about mobile phones, I wonder how many of us could be saving money on just this one item???

Go on a Bear Hunt in North Devon this autumn North Devon is set to host a colourful ‘Bear Hunt’ public art sculpture trail this autumn.

Local artists are currently decorating 25 individual fivefoot-tall bears that will form a series of mini trails in around Barnstaple, Bideford, Torrington, Ilfracombe and South Molton.

The Bear Hunt art trail will run throughout September and October in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The charity, which runs three children’s hospices, including Little Bridge House in Fremington near Barnstaple, has joined forces with The Art of Fundraising to deliver the project.

As well as helping to raise the profile of the hospice, it is hoped that the trail will also bring significant footfall and economic benefit to the host locations and surrounding areas.

CHSW Bear Hunt project coordinator Kate Romo said: “We’re really looking forward to seeing how all the artists choose to decorate their bears and can’t wait to see them form such a fun trail for people to follow in and around beautiful North Devon.

“We hope it will be hugely popular with both locals and visitors, who as well as being able to discover these wonderful pieces of bear art, will also be able to enjoy visiting the towns and villages in which they are located.”

Among the artists taking part are Phil Creek from Ottery St Mary; Mau Mau from Barnstaple; John Hurford from Chulmleigh; Kathy Nettles from Holsworthy; Sally Rich from Exmouth; Jenny Pymont from Paignton; and Jo Brown from Teignmouth.

There will also be a number of artist-celebrity collaborations, with former England and Somerset county cricketer Marcus Trescothick, and jockey Tom Scudamore, among those set to get creative.

“It’s going to be wonderful to see the personalities and styles of all the artists reflected in the bears,” added Kate.

“There will be a special trail app launching soon to help people track down all the bears and learn more about the artists and the work of CHSW.” For more information, visit www.chswbearhunt.org
