Catalytic converter theft is on the rise in North Devon

Catalytic converters contain precious metal, such as rhodium, platinum and palladium, thieves are taking advantage of the rising value of this metal, using cordless power tools and a car jack to remove them. This can be done in under a minute. Hybrid cars, Vans/Pickups and SUV’s are particularly at risk, as the ride height makes access to the exhaust system beneath them easier. To help protect your vehicle from Catalytic converter theft.

• Park in well-lit areas. • Park close to building entrances or the nearest road in public car parks. This leaves your car in a location where many people can see it. • Avoid parking your vehicle half on the pavement half on the road, as this may make it easier for thieves to access the catalytic converter. • If you have a garage, keep your car parked inside with the door shut. • Add video surveillance to the area where you regularly park your car. • Install a catalytic converter-specific security device, or have it welded to the car frame. You can also engrave your car’s VIN number to the catalytic converter.

If you notice anyone acting suspiciously underneath a vehicle, you should immediately contact the Police, 999.

Braunton Awarded Open Space Funding

Braunton Parish Council are pleased to confirm that funding has been awarded for the new play equipment in Chaloners Play Park.

At a full council meeting in July, North Devon councillors agreed to allocate £26,992 to the Parish Council towards the enhancement of Chaloners Road play area.

Chaloners Road play area will get extra, inclusive play equipment which will provide opportunities to all children, regardless of ability. Local Ward Member for Braunton West and Georgeham and Braunton Parish Councillor Jasmine Chesters, says: "I am really pleased that these projects have received funding that will enable them to proceed. They are worthy causes that will involve activities for both children and teenagers to be out in the fresh air exercising socially."

Local Ward Member for Braunton East and Braunton Parish Councillor, Derrick Spear says “It’s great that the health and wellbeing of the community will benefit. "One of the issues regarding the use of Chaloners Play Park was the Chaloners Road crossing and its safety concerns. This longstanding problem will now be resolved by the updating of the crossing to address the safety issues. The Parish council is pleased that residents’ concerns have been listened to.”

Braunton Parish Council Chair Councillor Liz Spear, says: “The Parish Council very much welcome the contribution of the Community Open Space funding for the very popular Chaloners Road Play Area. We consulted the local primary schools as to what equipment they would like, and this funding fills a big hole in Parish Council funding due to the pandemic.

Under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing extra community and social infrastructure as a result of the impact of a new development. These contributions can only be used for certain things, but are used primarily for public open space projects.

New Picnic Benches and Seating

New picnic benches have been installed along the riverside on the Tarka Trail behind the anchor area in the village centre. We have also put some additional seating in Chaloners play park. These have been provided with support from the European Development Fund and HM Government’s Welcome Back Fund.
