LEARN TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT Recently, I picked up the saxophone again for the first time in 30 years – since I stopped having lessons at school. And I loved it! Ok so I was far from good, but it surprised me how much I remembered after so long and how automatically my fingers played the right notes (although perhaps not at the right time, but we won’t dwell on that). What surprised me the most was how much fun it was to play again – especially when my teacher picked up her instrument and played along with me. I remember I always enjoyed learning to play when I was a child, but I had forgotten the fun of just playing. With the new school term upon us, now is the ideal time to get your child learning a new instrument. We’re lucky in Braunton to have such a wide array of musical options and below is a list of the current instrumental teachers at Braunton Academy. Many of these also teach at the local primary schools and there are of course others who teach privately, but this is a good place to start looking. If you need more reasons why you should learn a musical instrument, then read on!

1. Playing a Musical Instrument Improves Memory When you learn to play a musical instrument you use both the right and left part of your brain. This works your brain harder and so improves your memory.

2. Music Helps Relieve Stress There is no doubt that music can heighten your emotions. It’s also been proven to help you to calm down, lower your heart rate and blood pressure. This in turn lowers the stress hormone cortisol, making us feel relaxed. Whilst just listening to music helps, research has shown that learning to play an instrument brings with it comfort and daily repetition which helps keep the stress away.

3. It Makes You Smarter!

There has been a lot of research which shows that children who learn to play a musical instrument do better in their academic studies than children who do not.

Why we have seasons September 22nd marks the Autumn Equinox. It's the end of summer and the start of a new season.

But what is a season?

We all instinctively know the difference between summer and winter but who decides when they start and end? Are there official dates? Well actually yes.

A season is defined as a period of the year distinguished by special climate conditions. The four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter each have their own light, temperature, and weather patterns that repeat yearly.

In the UK the winter solstice generally begins on December 21 or 22. This is the day of the year with the shortest period of daylight. Summer begins on June 20 or 21, the summer solstice, the day which has the most daylight of any day in the year. Spring and autumn, begin on days that have equal amounts of daylight and darkness. The vernal, or spring, equinox falls on March 20 or 21, which brings us back to autumn which starts at the end of the month. The seasons of the Northern Hemisphere are the opposite of those in the Southern Hemisphere, which is why in Australia, summer begins in December, winter begins in June and Christmas lunch is served on the beach!

Our seasons occur because Earth is tilted on its axis relative to the orbital plane, the invisible, flat disc where most objects in the solar system orbit the sun. Earth revolves on its axis, which is an invisible line that runs through its centre, from pole to pole.

In June, when our Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, the sun’s rays hit it for more of the day than in winter, which means we receive more hours of daylight.

In December, when the Northern

Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, there are fewer hours of daylight.

But our four-season year is not experienced all over the globe. Four seasons only occur in the mid-latitudes, which are places that are not too near the poles or Equator. The further north (or south) you go within these mid-latitudes, the bigger the differences in the seasons. For example, Helsinki in Finland sees a full 18.5 hours of daylight in the middle of June whereas in midDecember it barely gets 6 hours. Athens in Greece however in the far south of Europe, has a smaller variation, with 14.5 hours of daylight in June and 9.5 hours in December.

Places near the Equator experience little seasonal variation and receive the same amount of daylight and darkness throughout the whole year. These places remain warm year-round and typically have just two seasons, a rainy season, and a dry one.

Polar regions do experience seasonal variation, although they are obviously colder than most other places on the planet.

Near the poles, the amount of daylight changes dramatically between summer and winter. In Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost city in the U.S., it stays light all day long between mid-May and early August, while in winter the city is in total darkness.

I love the fact we have four seasons in the UK but just a small change in global temperature could cause the seasons to shift or become more extreme. We can’t take our wonderful seasons for granted.

Bear is a six-yearold Shar Pei cross who arrived at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe after her owner sadly fell ill and could no longer care for her.

Braunton Awarded Open Space Funding Braunton Parish Council are pleased to confirm that funding has been awarded for the new play equipment in Chaloners Play Park.

At a full council meeting in July, North Devon councillors agreed to allocate £26,992 to the Parish Council towards the enhancement of Chaloners Road play area.

Chaloners Road play area will get extra, inclusive play equipment which will provide opportunities to all children, regardless of ability.

Local Ward Member for Braunton West and Georgeham and Braunton Parish Councillor Jasmine Chesters, says: "I am really pleased that these projects have received funding that will enable them to proceed. They are worthy causes that will involve activities for both children and teenagers to be out in the fresh air exercising socially."

Local Ward Member for Braunton East and Braunton Parish Councillor, Derrick Spear says “It’s great that the health and wellbeing of the community will benefit.

"One of the issues regarding the use of Chaloners Play Park was the Chaloners Road crossing and its safety concerns. This longstanding problem will now be resolved by the updating of the crossing to address the safety issues. The Parish council is pleased that residents’ concerns have been listened to.”

Braunton Parish Council Chair Councillor Liz Spear, says: “The Parish Council very much welcome the contribution of the Community Open Space funding for the very popular Chaloners Road Play Area.

We consulted the local primary schools as to what equipment they would like, and this funding fills a big hole in Parish Council funding due to the pandemic.

FREE PLACES AT WEST BUCKLAND SCHOOL West Buckland School Foundation is offering free places at West Buckland School to children from the local community.

There are two Foundation Bursaries available for entry into Year 7 in September 2022. These full bursaries have been made possible by generous legacies and donations as well as by the support of West Buckland School.

One full bursary, the Fortescue Bristow bursary, is available to families who derive their principal income from the rural economy.

Families of prospective candidates, about to enter Year 6, are encouraged to contact the Foundation office as applications will be opening soon.

Places are on offer to pupils who pass the entrance examinations, which are held in November 2021, and whose parents could not consider sending their child to West Buckland School without this assistance.

The Foundation was set up in 2003 and has been helping fund bursaries since that time; the free places programme started in 2012 and there are currently fourteen pupils at West Buckland whose places are fully funded.

The identity of these bursary recipients is highly confidential and will not be disclosed unless the family agrees.

Headmaster Phillip Stapleton said: “At West Buckland we have a strong vision of social inclusivity and wide opportunity. These Foundation bursaries give children, who would not otherwise have been able to attend West Buckland, a truly lifechanging opportunity. Those children in return can give their talents and skills to better our community.”

Dogs Trust urges owners to think ahead and make provisions for the care of their dog should they become seriously ill or pass away More than half (57%) of dog owners in the South West have not made any plans or thought about who would take over ownership of their dog if they became seriously ill or passed away 61% of dog owners in the South West think a friend or family member would take over ownership of their dog but have not discussed it with them More than half (57%) of dog owners in the South West have not made any plans about who would take over ownership of their dog if the worst were to happen, according to data from Dogs Trust’s brand-new research.(1) The findings, released today, suggest owners could be putting their dogs in a vulnerable position by not making provisions for their care should they fall seriously ill or pass away, with more than a quarter (28%) of dog owners in the South West surveyed by the charity admitting that they have not even thought about what would happen in that scenario.

Worryingly, 61% of respondents in the South West also said that whilst they think they have a friend or family member who would take over ownership of the dog, they have not discussed it with the person in question – a cause for concern for the charity.

Dogs Trust is urging the public to sign up to their free Canine Care Card Service, to ensure their dog can be cared for by the UK’s largest dog welfare charity at one of their state-ofthe-art rehoming centres, should they become too ill to be able to keep them or pass away.

The charity is also encouraging dog owners to appoint a ‘dog guardian’, this could be family member, friend or even a neighbour or vet who agrees to take care of your dog and sign over your dog to Dogs Trust in the interim should you no longer be able to. Dogs Trust also recommends updating your Will to include your Canine Care Card information and notifying friends and family of your wishes to ensure the process is dealt with as smoothly as possible when the time comes.

Amy Bingham, Supporter Relations Officer at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said: “Recent world events have shown that we never know what is around the corner and that life can be unpredictable. As a nation of dog lovers, we know the little quirks that make our dogs unique and I for one enjoy having the peace of mind that if the time ever comes when I can’t be with my dog, Dogs Trust is the next best place for her to be and they will never put a healthy dog down.

“We want to normalise making plans for the care of your dog should the worst happen, so that dog owners can have peace of mind that their four-legged friend will be given the best possible care if they no longer can. We would urge dog owners to think about signing up to a free Canine Care Card, so that should the worst happen Dogs Trust can take your dog in and make sure they are looked after as you would at home.”

Three-year old Shih Tzu cross, Rupert, and two-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, Bramble arrived at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe earlier this year after their owner had signed up for the Canine Care Card Service.

Paul and Kay Dufty, who live near Bristol, were looking to welcome a dog into their life after losing their previous dog, Dave, and said the house just didn’t feel the same without a four-legged friend.

Kay said: “Rupert and Bramble, now Norman and Georgie, have settled in so well. After a few days of tiptoeing around the house, they now see the house as their own and their individual personalities are shining through. Norman is very much the chilled, playful one who loves to chase a ball or squeaky toy. Georgie is the sensible grown-up in the relationship, who enjoys her food, and her best game is foraging for treats in the grass.

“We have adopted two other rescue dogs in the past and they gave us nothing but love, fun and enriched our lives. There are so many dogs in rescue centres waiting for a loving home, who have ended up there through a variety of circumstances, that going to Dogs Trust and enlisting the help of their staff was the most obvious and responsible thing to do when looking for our next companions.

“Dogs Trust work so hard to get things right the first time to ensure the right dogs match the right owners. So, if you're looking to make a dog a part of your family, consider giving a rescue dog a second chance. You won't regret it!”

This important message comes as the charity launches a heart-warming TV advert this week, encouraging people to consider signing up for a free Canine Care Card. The advert, with a voice over from dog-loving actor, Jonathan Pryce, depicts the close bond between crossbreed, Wilf and his owner, Tom - including Wilf’s penchant for stealing Tom’s underpants. Unfortunately, Tom passes away, but luckily he had signed up to Dogs Trust’s Canine Care Card, meaning that Wilf and all his quirks, were taken in by the charity.

Where should you go to university?

If you're a student entering Year 13 you may be trying to narrow down your choice of university.

It can be quite a task because there are so many. Even if you know what you want to study chemical engineering, maths, architecture, medicine, music etc., different universities can have radically different approaches.

Here are some points to consider.

Course and Contact Hours - How much tutor contact do you want or need? Do you want a more conventionally academic course, or would you prefer something more practical and hands on?

Scholarships - These can be awarded for a variety of reasons: academic excellence, music, and sports are most common. The good news is that you don't have to be studying music, or sports as a subject, just willing to perform on behalf of the university.

Bursaries - If you grew up in the care system or come from a background where parental finances are strained, universities may offer a financial incentive for you to attend.

Modules - You can usually check course modules online. Do they look interesting?

You don't want to end up studying something you hate for a year.

Placements - Are there any placements associated with your course? Are they compulsory? Whereabouts in the course do they fall? Are they paid?

The Student Halls - Are there halls and are they near the university? Not having to negotiate transport and bus timetables can be a bonus when there are so many other new skills to learn. Student flats can be great, but in the first year when you don't know anyone it can be daunting organising bill-sharing and rent payments on top of

everything else.

Consider location; rents in London and the South can be considerably higher than other parts of the UK. Societies - What are you into? Some unis are famous for their theatrical societies, others for their sports facilities, sailing clubs, choral societies, or orchestras. If you have a hobby you are passionate about there will be a university society for you.

Nightlife - If you're the nightclub type you might want to make sure you're going somewhere with a good night scene.

People assume all universities have this, but some are situated on isolated campuses, and you might need to take this into consideration.

Local Area - If you like to get out hill walking at the weekends then London might not be the best choice of city. But if you love art galleries and theatre trips it might be the perfect place. If you love to sail or sea kayak, then you might like to consider universities near the coast. Do you want easy access to a gym? A swimming pool?

Dance studio?

Is your chosen uni where you think it is?

- Think I'm joking? I grew up in Warwick and every year without fail we had lots of people wandering around the castle area asking where Warwick University was. They were always surprised when we said, 'Coventry!'

How far away from home is it and are there are good transport links? - If you want to pop home now and then, you might not relish a nine-hour bus ride.

Going to open days is a great idea, to get a first-hand feel of where you could be staying. This year open days should be happening again, so go to a few, and trust your gut.
