End Polio Now Come to Braunton Museum or Countryside Centre, both in the Car Park in the Centre of Braunton. Collect a card showing the 5 historic chapels and a self-guided Walk sheet with points of interest along your route: some points you may know but others may be new to you. Or download a walk onto your phone at www.brauntoncaenrotary.co.uk. At each Chapel you will find a box of tokens. Collect one token and return to the Museum or Countryside Centre to have your card stamped to say that you have completed that walk. All the walks are easy and will take 40 minutes or so plus return. The walk to St. Anne’s Saunton starts from Braunton Burrows Sandy Lane Car Park and takes about an hour plus return. Why not take a flask and snack to eat in the grove there. Walk with your friends, take your family, grandchildren. On your return you could stop for a tea or coffee in one of our cafes. Please share these walks on your social media. Let us get everyone out walking to End Polio Now. Braunton Caen Rotary has always been involved in eradicating polio, whether travelling to India as volunteers to take part in children vaccination weeks or attending the House of Commons as part of a high-powered delegation raising awareness of its importance in Government. Endemic in many parts of the world in the 1970s, spearheaded by Rotary, there are now just a handful of cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Like smallpox it can be eradicated. Meanwhile we are all still worldwide vaccinated in childhood because it could easily flare up. Polio remains incurable and results in limb deformation, paralysis and sometimes death. Please support our vaccination campaign and the network of medical expertise created to eradicate polio but which also fights other diseases. Rotary is on the ground with local knowledge establishing trust in communities and helping international experts to put resources to greatest effect. Links for more information are on our website above. Thanks to an ongoing partnership, every £1 Donated to Rotary is matched with £2 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A £10 donation instantly turns into £30 to help end Polio forever. Thank you to our sponsors Brewer Harding & Rowe Solicitors, Braunton Museum and Countryside Centre, the Men’s Shed and the Chapel Owners.

Local Government, Local People August was an incredible month as a councillor. Between Maternity Services at North Devon Hospital, heatwaves, bluetongue, and the sudden failure of Barnstaple’s highways, it felt like there was very little room to breathe, let alone keep on top of casework, and spend some quality time with the fam. Between juggling all of that, Devon Councillors were also dealing with the government’s decision on creating a new Unitary Council. Over the last few months, the situation regarding the future of Devon’s County, City and District Councils has been very fluid. Devon Council favoured a large, and (I felt) very impressive unitary model. Unfortunately, Exeter and Plymouth City Councils were more focused on more insular models which would have left the remainder of our county in a much weaker position. Twelve months ago, people laughed when I speculated that Barnstaple was about to be the capital of Rural Devon. I’m not a smug person, but I was interested to see many councillors’ faces when they realised that my “paranoid theories” were about to become true. While I personally had some optimism and hope that Barnstaple and Rural Devon could thrive after being divorced from the cities, it was very clear that the 60% of the population and 85% of the geography of Devon was going to be impoverished by the change. That is why Devon County Council, chose to make a formal legal challenge to the decision and why, (thankfully), the Secretary of State has decided to step-back and reassess the position on nearly all of the proposed Unitary Councils. I am confident that Devon will still see unitary authorities in the next few years. However, I pray that they will provide a solution that works for the entirety of Devon, not simply our cities. All this change means that we now expect to have elections for North Devon District Council, as well as Braunton, Georgeham, Heanton and Ashford Parish Councils in the next 12 months. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested in joining one of our councils. The role of councillor is largely a voluntary position, although District and County Councillors do receive an allowance (don’t get excited). Braunton Rural runs on the skills and motivation of volunteers. From sports coaches to environmental activists. The great thing about joining our councils is that it allows you to take your own passions and build them into our community. Eight years ago I joined our council to fight for safe, secure homes for local people. It’s taken a lot of hard work, and a great deal of teamwork but that dream has been part of North Devon building up the country’s best community housing trust network and we’re now building our first council homes in 26 years. That’s why being a councillor is so fantastic. One moment you’re tackling a maternity crisis, the next you’re building your own dreams for a better community. If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, then get in touch. Cllr Graham M Bell (rn) Devon County Councillor: Braunton Rural North Devon District Council: Lead Councillor for Housing & Homelessness, District & Parish Councillor for Braunton East Please note, as an RN, I frequently work nights and unusual shift patterns, therefore it might not be possible to respond to queries immediately. If a matter requires an urgent response, please call, message or WhatsApp on 07929159996.

Proposed Road Works – Traffic Signal Replacement, The Square, Braunton There are upcoming works on Caen Street, Chaloners Road, Exeter Road and South Street. These works are needed to replace some of the existing traffic signal apparatus and to cut new traffic loops into the road surface. Work is scheduled to start on 12 October 2026 and should take about two weeks to complete. Most of the work will take place during the day. To help manage traffic, temporary traffic lights will be set up at the junction. These lights will stay in place 24 hours a day throughout the project. During the busiest times, between 7:00am and 7:00pm, staff will manually control the lights to help keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible. Later in the project, they will also need to close South Street and Heanton Street overnight so that new traffic loops can be installed at the Exeter Road / South Street / Heanton Street junction. These closures will be needed for about two consecutive nights. During this time, South Street and Heanton Street will be closed where they meet Exeter Road. The road closures will be in place from 6:30pm to 6:00am. We cannot confirm the exact dates yet, but we expect this work to happen between 21 and 23 October. Any noisy work, such as cutting into the road, should finish by around 11:00pm. Once the dates are confirmed, they will be displayed on yellow and black traffic signs near the work site. If you have any questions or concerns about this project, you can contact WSP by emailing Braunton.trafficsignals@wsp.com Please include "Braunton Traffic Signal Replacement" in your message so it reaches the right team. You can also call 01392 229700 and ask to speak to a member of the project team.

Former Sheepdog Called Meg Finds Forever Home, After Help from Local Foster Carers A rescue Collie who had never experienced life in a home has now been adopted after spending time in foster care to help her discover the joys of family life. Meg the one-year-old Collie, who came into Dogs Trust Ilfracombe's care in June 2026, has found her forever home with a couple from Somerset after spending over a month (34 days) in foster care, where she gained the confidence and experience she needed to take her next steps towards finding a family. Meg arrived in Dogs Trust Ilfracombe alongside another Collie called Bingo, as they had both been unsuccessful sheepdogs due to their fear of sheep. It wasn’t long until Bingo was successfully rehomed, but Meg wasn’t quite ready. Having never lived in a home environment, she needed a chance to experience everyday family life before she was put up on the website for adoption. In her foster home, Meg was able to begin her housetraining and gradually build her confidence. Her foster family also gave Dogs Trust a much better understanding of what she was like as a pet, helping the team identify the kind of home where she would be happiest. Her foster carer found her to be affectionate, sweet-natured and very calm. She loved building strong bonds with those around her and discovered the joy of playing with toys for the very first time. She also quickly picked up her house training and grew increasingly confident with getting in the car and travelling. On 27 July, Meg’s foster journey came to an end when she was adopted by a couple from Somerset who were immediately drawn to her. They were big fans of the Collie breed, and they had woodland walks close to their home where Meg could enjoy exploring without encountering any sheep that she would rather avoid. Her adopters said: “Meg has settled in so well and it already feels like she has always been part of our family. We absolutely adore her and are looking forward to helping her continue to grow in confidence. She is such a lovely, affectionate girl and we couldn’t be happier that she has found her way to us.” Dogs Trust has been able to help dogs like Meg thanks to the generous support of Postcode Lottery players who have raised over £30 million for the charity, helping care for over 125,000 dogs since funding began in 2014.

The charity is celebrating reaching this milestone fundraising total after 12 years of support which has helped provide essential daily care for dogs cared for at 22 rehoming centres across the UK. As well as helping dogs find a new home, funding from Postcode Lottery players has helped Dogs Trust’s dedicated teams including training, behaviour and welfare specialists, fostering and volunteer co-ordinators, and many more to help thousands of dogs find their forever homes. Elise Watson, Rehoming Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said: "Meg is a wonderful example of how transformative foster care can be for dogs who have never experienced life in a home. It gave her the opportunity to learn all about the things that make up everyday family life, while allowing us to see the sweet, affectionate and calm personality she had to offer. We’re absolutely delighted that she has now found such a wonderful home with adopters who understand her needs and are committed to helping her continue to flourish. After her rather unsuccessful career as a sheepdog, we think Meg has definitely found her calling as a much-loved family pet. It's thanks to support from Postcode Lottery players who have raised such an incredible amount over the years, that we are able to continue care for and support dogs like Meg. We couldn’t achieve what we do without you."

Visits to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe are by appointment only. If you would like to apply to adopt a dog, please fill in the online application form and, if a match is found, the charity will arrange an appointment for you to meet them.
