HOctober 2024
ello and welcome to the October edition.
Well it’s certainly feeling a bit chillier now! Shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops have now gone away for another year and out comes the jeans, jumpers and boots! I must say I love the Autumn though, it is so pretty with the leaves falling and the trees changing colour. As long as we have nice crisp, dry days, I’ll be happy.
So October brings another half term! And during that we have Halloween. We have a safety poster on page 22. Please be considerate when Trick or Treating, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, have fun and be safe.
We have included a fantastic feature from Age Concern to give you lots of information regarding the Winter Fuel payments for pensioners, be sure to contact them if you need assistance.
Have a great fun filled month and see you next month.
Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

Winter Fuel Support
With the recent change to Winter Fuel Payments many older people will struggle this winter to heat their homes.
Previously, all pensioners were eligible for Winter Fuel Payments, but now only people on Pension Credit or certain other benefits will continue to receive the payment.
An estimated 880,000 low-income pensioner households eligible for Pension Credit currently fail to claim it. Over 5,000 of these households are in North Devon
People who are eligible for Pension Credit receive an average of £3,900 a year and the Winter Fuel Payments of between £200 and £300 depending on personal circumstances.
If you are aged 66 or older, you live alone, you have no or low savings and you have a weekly income below £218.15 you are entitled to Pension Credit. If you are a couple (both aged 66+) the weekly income threshold to receive Pension Credit is below £332.95. If you receive Pension Credit you may also be entitled to help with housing costs and council tax.
If you would like some help to claim Pension Credit Age Concern Barnstaple and North Devon has a dedicated Help Desk open Monday to Friday 9.30am-1.30pm. The telephone number is 01271 445131.
If you would like face-to-face support you can make an appointment and come to one of our Benefits Clinics which are held in Barnstaple, South Molton and Ilfracombe.
If attending a clinic is difficult for you a home visit can be arranged.
Please don’t let the application process prevent you from claiming these entitlements, Age Concern can help you. Telephone 01271 445131 Email: tina@ageconcernnorthdevon.org.uk
If you have experience of form filling and would like to help people with their benefit applications, we are looking for volunteers for our Barnstaple, Ilfracombe and South Molton Benefits Clinics.
Please get in touch with Jill on 01271 445134, or email jill@ageconcernnorthdevon.org.uk or call into our office, Age Concern, 116-118 Boutport Street, Barnstaple, EX31 1TD, we are open Monday – Friday 9.30am – 3.30pm.

North Devon Model Show 2024
FEATURE
North Devon Model Show raises £2000 for “the Veteran's Charity”.
The North Devon Model Show was held on Sunday August 18th at The Park Community School’, Barnstaple. The charity event is hosted by the ‘North Devon Model Society’.
The day saw 679 visitors attend the show, up from the 500 of last year, and included Ian Roome MP.
With over fifty stands displaying and selling models from clubs and traders across the South West there was a vast range of amazing models on display, there was something for everyone!
Doors opened early to the queuing visitors who were not disappointed. This year’s show was twice the size of the previous year, featuring a second hall and a radio control arena. All aspects of model making were on show.
A ‘Make and Take’ area for children was incredibly popular. Amazed parents looked on to see 108 children quietly engrossed in something other than a computer screen. The children could build and paint a free model that they could take home and be proud of.
The exhibitors from all over the South West, and as far away as Middlesbrough, were delighted to answer questions from visitors about their models, and inspire others to take up this great hobby which is now recognised as having positive mental health benefits for young and old alike.
Planning is already well underway for the 2025 show which will return on Sunday August 17th and will see further displays and activities for all those with even the slightest interest in model making.
North Devon is rapidly becoming a regional hub for model making with the ‘North Devon Model Show’ now the largest charity model show in the South West of England.
‘The Veterans Charity’ is Barnstaple based and provides immediate needs support for Veterans who face hardship and distress. Please see https:// www.veteranscharity.org.uk/

Hate Crime & Incidents.
We have seen national unrest following the tragic events in Southport in August of this year, with the significant disorder that followed throughout communities. Information and intelligence continues to be closely monitored and Devon & Cornwall Police are prepared and ready to respond with contingency plans, should any local disorder arise.
Diverse Communities Lead Inspector Le Cheminant adds; “It has been a difficult time for all communities across the UK with recent events. It is heartening to see communities support one another. Positively, in Devon and Cornwall Police we are not seeing a related rise in hate crime and we will continue to monitor closely. If you wish to reach out to the Diverse Communities Team locally, please do so and we will support you in any way we can.”
Hate crime comes in many different forms and strikes at the heart of communities. With your help, we can tackle those responsible for hate crime and keep our communities safe. We're here and ready to help anyone who has been affected by someone else's prejudice, ignorance or violence.
A hate crime is any criminal offence which is perceived by the victims, or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on the following:
• Race – or perceived race, any ethnic background, including gypsy & traveller groups.
• Religion or belief – or perceived, any religious groups including those who have no faith in a theology.
• A person sexual orientation – or perceived sexual orientation.
• Disability – this includes any physical disability, learning disabilities, neurodiversity or development conditions.
• A person who is a transgender, or perceived to be, including people who are transexual and those who hold a Gender Recognition Certificate.
It may be that a crime hasn’t taken place, however, police record them to understand any patterns and build intelligence about emerging tensions before they escalate into serious harm.
So, what is a ‘non-crime hate incident’?
It could be a threat of attack, such as offence letters or abusive phone calls, groups hanging around to intimidate, unfounded malicious complaints, derogatory language towards a person. It could be an incident involving discriminatory behaviour were the criminal threshold isn’t met.
For action to be taken against the perpetrator of a hate crime and more importantly for support to be put in place for the victim, the incident needs to be reported to the police. This can be done by:
• Phoning the police - 999 in emergencies and 101 for non-urgent calls
• Devon and Cornwall online non urgent web pagewww.devon-cornwall.police.uk/reporthc
• Going into a police station that has an enquiry desk
• Online through the True Vision website www.report-it.org.uk
• Via support organisations such as Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111
• Third party reporting centres
• Or scan the QR code shown on this page.
