Hello and welcome to the October edition.
As I write this in September, the sun is shining and we are in the middle of a heatwave!! I’m not complaining though, it’s absolutely beautiful weather although a tad warm to work in.
At the end of this month, the children have another half term! The Barnstaple fair has been and gone and this month the clocks also go backwards so don’t forget when you go to bed on Saturday 28th October to turn your clocks BACK one hour in preparation for 2am on Sunday morning.
There’s once again lots of great events happening this month including Mission
Unbreakable and Over and Above’s Fire and Glass walk!! Then at the end of the month is Halloween. Please see our poster for hints and tips on being safe and only go to doors who aren’t displaying a ‘No Trick or Treat’ poster. Thank you.

North Devon Council has announced a funding injection of just over £95,000 towards enhancing community amenities in Fremington. This boost comes as a result of a decision by North Devon Council's Strategy and Resources Committee during their meeting held on Monday, 4 September.
The allocated funds will be directed towards two open space projects within Fremington. The first portion, amounting to £55,215, has been designated to Fremington Parish Council to facilitate the replacement of play equipment at the Ellerslie Road play area. In addition, Fremington Parish Council will also receive £39,868. This will be utilised for the replacement of play equipment at Beechfield, another cherished communal space.
Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor Ian Roome, says: "I am thrilled to see Fremington benefitting from this significant S106 funding, which will breathe new life into two cherished parks. As both of these parks hold a special place in our community and have remained popular and in high demand, I am excited to witness the forthcoming transformations that will undoubtedly revitalise these spaces for generations to come."
Under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing extra community and social infrastructure as a result of the impact of new development in the area. These contributions can only be used for certain things, and are used primarily for public open space projects.

NORTH DEVON MODEL SHOW SUNDAY AUGUST 13th 2023 SHOW REPORT
Sunday August 13th saw the return of the long-awaited North Devon Model Show. Hosted by the North Devon Model Society the show was held at the Park Community School, Barnstaple with all profits going to ‘Children’s Hospice South West – Little Bridge House’. The 28 traders and exhibitors represented clubs from across the South West and further afield. These had been invited based on the variety and quality of their exhibits and did not disappoint.
The doors opened at 10am and the hall quickly filled with members of the public of all ages. There was truly something for everyone ranging from traditional model kits of all subjects through to 3D printed spacecraft and everything in between.
The objective of the show was to showcase some of the incredible skills the hobby of model making can teach people of all generations. As well as enhance our ability to focus and relax. Things we are all sadly losing as digital entertainment encroaches on our lives. We saw many parents showing their young children the stunning models on display. I’m sure there will be some future modellers among them.
Many were amazed at the popularity of this hidden hobby and will discover a welcoming thriving community at any model club they choose to visit.
Selaine Saxby MP visited at the height of the show and was astonished at the incredible talent on display and the popularity of the event.
The motto of the North Devon Model Society is ‘Meet, Build, Share, Learn, Enjoy’ and the show certainly fulfilled all of these criteria.
The show remained busy all day and was thoroughly enjoyed by traders and exhibitors alike, all of whom wish to return for next year’s show. Those who were flagging were quickly revived by the excellent refreshments on site while taking the time out to decide which kit to buy from the abundant selection on offer.
This year’s show was all about getting the basics right. Having over 500 adults visit, plus children, as well as tremendous feedback online and in person. I think the NDMS achieved their goal.
Once the dust had settled the North Devon Model Society had the pleasure of handing over a cheque for £1066.18 to ‘Children’s Hospice South West – Little Bridge House’. Next year’s show promises to be bigger and better, with an additional hall and clubs queueing to attend. So, save the date Sunday August 18th 2024 at The Park Community School, Barnstaple, with proceeds going to support the Barnstaple based ‘Veteran’s Charity’.

Could you Volunteer as a Puppy Raiser for Guide Dogs in North Devon?
The local branch of charity Guide Dogs is urgently appealing for new volunteers to sign up as puppy raisers and join its team of volunteers in North Devon. This means looking after future guide dogs for the first year of their lives, socialising them and giving them a loving home. It’s a hugely rewarding role with lots of support and training on offer, plus you will meet lots of new people in your area also raising pups.
Guide Dogs relies heavily on volunteers to help improve the lives of people with sight loss. There are around 2 million people living with sight loss in the UK.
Guide Dogs supports people with a visual impairment to maintain their independence and live the life they choose. There are lots of different services on offer, ranging from volunteer-led services such as My Sighted Guide through to the children and young people’s services, access to technology, and the iconic guide dog service.
Kerry Hall, Puppy Development Advisor for Guide Dogs in the area says:
“Puppy raisers are vital to Guide Dogs, every single guide dog puppy relies on a volunteer to give them the start they need to go on to be a future life changer. There might be the odd chewed slipper along the way, but nothing beats the rewarding feeling of loving and raising a puppy who will go on to make an enormous difference to someone living with sight loss.”
Ian one of our Puppy Raisers said “Having May has given me a purpose in retirement. May has encouraged me to get up, get going, keep fit and keep my brain ticking over. She has also brought me amusement, as she does something everyday that amazes me or makes me smile. She has stolen everyone’s heart, a lot of people in the local community know her and love her”.

Barnstaple fire and glass walk promises evening of red-hot fundraising fun
Fearless fundraisers are being invited to take part in Barnstaple’s ‘hottest, sharpest and shortest’ charity walk.
The Fire and Glass Walk at Tesco Extra on Saturday, November 18 is being held to raise vital funds for North Devon hospital charity Over and Above, and will be led by two-time firewalk Guinness World Record breaker Scott Bell.
Scott, who is internationally known as one of the world’s leading experts on firewalking, will be on hand to help participants walk barefoot along a path of hot coals at temperatures of 500C, followed by a short stroll over shards of broken glass.
Over and Above community fundraiser Kate Constable said: “This is the hottest, sharpest and shortest sponsored walk you will ever do and a fantastic opportunity to get together with friends or work colleagues and do something very special to support your local hospital.
“You can choose to do either or both of these ultimate daring challenges, so join us for an unforgettable evening in Barnstaple that will push your boundaries and challenge your perceptions.”
The event starts at 5pm following a training and safety briefing, with photos and presentations after.
Anyone aged 12 and up can take part. Registration is £25 and participants are asked to try to raise £100 in sponsorship.
“Every penny you’re able to raise will help our hospital go even further for patients and their families,” added Kate.
