From Club Penguin to Facebook, the internet plays a major role in many children’s lives. It is a source of information and entertainment for children, but there are those who can and do use it to harm young people.
It doesn’t matter if your child accesses the internet via a computer, games device, their mobile phone or a tablet, it is important they fully understand the risks involved in using the internet.
By following a few simple rules, your child can enjoy the internet safely.
Remind your child:
• How easy it is for a person to hide their real identity online. Not everyone is who he or she says they are.
• Never arrange to meet someone he or she has ‘met’ on the internet.
• Never give out contact details to someone they have met online such as telephone number, mobile number, or address.
• Never give out personal details that may reveal their age, gender, or location, such as their school or college.
• Change their email address if they suspect someone they have met online has access to it.
• To tell you if they’re worried about something or someone they have come across on the internet.
• Only use moderated chat rooms, where they can chat all he or she likes, but an adult will be keeping an eye out in case of any problems.
• Never email a photo of him or herself to someone they have met online.
• Don’t believe everything they read - sometimes people don't tell the truth and will say things to manipulate them.
To use their common sense; if something seems wrong or makes them feel uncomfortable, then they must tell you or another responsible adult straightaway.

Braunton Neighbourhood Plan Referendum
On Thursday, 7 September 2023, seven years of dedicated hard work by volunteer members of the community were rewarded by a resounding vote YES to the question:
"Do you want North Devon District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Braunton Parish to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhoodarea?"
An overwhelming 90 per cent of voters said they would like the document to be used to help inform future decisions about development and planning applications in the area.
There were 1,042 votes ‘yes’, 114 votes ‘no’ and0 rejected papers. The electorate was 6,428 with 1,156 ballot papers issued. The turnoutwas 17.9%.
Put simply, this means that residents agree that the policies about land use within the Plan, concerning housing and the need for more affordable homes, protection of green spaces and the natural environment, protection of buildings used as community assets and supporting our local economy will have full weight when planning applications or development proposals are considered by Planning Officers –planningpower at the mostlocal level,
focusing on the things that are important to those who live and work in Braunton.
The neighbourhood plan, which has been seven years in the making, was created by a steering group made up of individual members of the public and parish councillors. Parish Councillors and Steering Group Members are entirely voluntary roles and are not paid.
The Chairman of Braunton Parish Council Councillor Marguerite Shapland says “The adoption of the Braunton Area Neighbourhood Plan is a very important step forward in ensuring that the views of our community are taken into account when decisions are taken on planning applications. The Plan will provide for developments to meet the needs of the community and provide vital protections to our environment and local businesses.”
The Neighbourhood Plan will be considered for formal adoption by North Devon District Council at their meetingon the 4th October 2023.

2023 BRAUNTON PARISH COUNCIL
October
So we’ve had the referendum - what now?
Having developed this shared vision for our neighbourhood, the policies within the Braunton Parish Neighbourhood Plan will be used by the local planning authority when deciding planning applications within the Braunton Parish Neighbourhood Area.
A neighbourhood plan attains the same legal status as a local plan (and other documents that form part of the statutory development plan) once it has been approved at a referendum. At this point it comes into force as part of the statutory development plan. Applications for planning permission must be determined in accordance with the development plan, unless material considerations indicate otherwise.
The plan can be reviewed and updated in the future. Material modifications
which do not change the nature of the plan would require examination but not a referendum. This might, for example, entail the addition of a site or sites which, subject to the decision of the independent examiner, are not so significant or substantial as to change the nature of the plan. Material modifications which do change the nature of the plan would require examination and a referendum.
The neighbourhood plan can be viewed at https:// www.brauntonparishneighbourhood plan.org.uk/
On behalf of the community we would like to thank everyone involved in producing the plan and to members of the public who gave their input in shaping the policies. Lastly we would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote in favour of the plan at the recent referendum.

Adorable Labrador Arlo looking for forever home at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe
Arlo, a handsome two-year-old Labrador crossbreed, is looking for a forever home at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe.
Arlo loves his toys, and he will happily play fetch until the cows come home.
A high energy dog, who travels well in the car, Arlo loves going on long hikes in the countryside away from traffic.
As well as enjoying physical exercise, he likes to keep his intelligent brain stimulated too. Arlo already knows ‘sit’ and ‘paw’ and is willing to learn new tricks with positive reward training – which is great fun for both human and dog.
Arlo does not mind other dogs joining him on walks. He can bark when initially meeting his doggy pals, so they will need to be tolerant. He is instantly friendly with new people, and he enjoys a fuss.
Arlo could share his home with teenage children. He will need his home to be set back in a quiet area away from busy roads and traffic.
He is housetrained, and Arlo is looking to be the only pet in his new home. Arlo has no history of living with small furries or livestock.
Arlo loves his human friends and would like to be with them most of the time. Time alone will therefore need to be built up gradually over a period of time.
If you think you could give Arlo the loving home that he deserves please visit https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/ rehoming/dogs/retriever-labrador/3022652

Barnstaple fire and glass walk promises evening
of red-hot fundraising fun
Fearless fundraisers are being invited to take part in Barnstaple’s ‘hottest, sharpest and shortest’ charity walk.
The Fire and Glass Walk at Tesco Extra on Saturday, November 18 is being held to raise vital funds for North Devon hospital charity Over and Above, and will be led by two-time firewalk Guinness World Record breaker Scott Bell.
Scott, who is internationally known as one of the world’s leading experts on firewalking, will be on hand to help participants walk barefoot along a path of hot coals at temperatures of 500C, followed by a short stroll over shards of broken glass.
Over and Above community fundraiser Kate Constable said: “This is the hottest, sharpest and shortest sponsored walk you will ever do and a fantastic opportunity to get together with friends or work colleagues and do something very special to support your local hospital.
“You can choose to do either or both of these ultimate daring challenges, so join us for an unforgettable evening in Barnstaple that will push your boundaries and challenge your perceptions.”
The event starts at 5pm following a training and safety briefing, with photos and presentations after.
Anyone aged 12 and up can take part. Registration is £25 and participants are asked to try to raise £100 in sponsorship.
“Every penny you’re able to raise will help our hospital go even further for patients and their families,” added Kate.
Places are limited; to book, visit https://rdecharity.enthuse.com/cf/ the-fire-and-glass-walk

These two beauties are Ginger and Jet, brother and sister who have lived with the same family for all of their eight years. Sadly due to no fault of their own they now need to find a new home. As siblings each keeps an eye on what the other is doing, but also spend plenty of time separately, each doing their own thing. Both are very friendly to their human companions though, with Jet in particular enjoying a lap to sit on, and Ginger generally coming when called for a bit of attention. They both enjoy being talked to and having a bit of fuss. They have been used to coming and going through their cat flap when they please and would definitely appreciate some outdoor space. They need to be only pets but have lived with children of all ages and are both particularly good natured cats who just need a second chance of a happy and loving new home.
