Hello and welcome to the October edition.
It is with great sadness that as I write this, on 8th September, the devasting news that our Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has passed has just been announced. May she rest in peace. Our sincere condolences go to her family. We have provided a memorial feature on pages 24/25.
There is a national e book of condolence on the Royal website - https://www.royal.uk.
It is now very obvious that Autumn is here as leaves are starting to fall. The Barnstaple fair and carnival has been and gone and this month the clocks also go backwards so don’t forget when you go to bed on Saturday 29th October to turn your clocks BACK one hour in preparation for 2am on Sunday morning.
Later in the month it is Halloween! We have a poster this month giving some advice from the Police on being careful when out and about for this. Please don’t knock on doors if they are displaying a ‘No Trick or Treat’ poster! Lisa
Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

The Wave Project is a young people's mental health charity and, although it initially started out in Newquay 10 years ago, has been active in North Devon since 2013.
We provide an evidence backed six week surf therapy course for young people (aged 8 18) who are referred to us by professionals such as GP's, social workers and school teachers. These young people are referred due to a range of different challenges in their lives from bullying, depression or grief, to physical or learning disabilities.
At the Wave Project our sessions allow them to experience the joy of the coastal environment and the waves, in a way that is safe and supported. Our young people report feeling more confident, having made new friends and having new skills by the end of a six week course with us.
One of the unique aspects of the Wave that seems to work so well for young people is that we work with volunteer surf mentors. We offer training to volunteers, which means that they can work 1:1, within a group setting under the guidance of surf instructors, to support young people in the sea. In North Devon area we have outstanding volunteer engagement, allowing us to deliver a huge number of sessions.
We usually operate from Croyde Bay with our partner Surf School Surf South West. With more demand than ever before following Covid, we also ran a successful Pilot Project at Westward Ho! in 2021, seeking to best meet the needs of the young people who are referred to us. We have continued to operate at Westward Ho! since then. We’d like to say a big thank you to Surf South West in Croyde and Westward Waves in Westward Ho! for helping us to deliver so many sessions already this year.
The charity operates from 32 beach locations across Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England.
Summer Surf Therapy courses are now complete. More than 25 new young people experienced the joy of a six week therapy course, supported by our brilliant surf schools Surf South West in Croyde and Westward Waves at Sandymere. Our wonderful team of volunteers made the magic happen, and we are as grateful as ever.
The Autumn Surf Therapy course will be kicking off in September.
Surf Club has been in full swing for summer, and this year surf club coordinator Bryony has made a partnership with North Devon National Trust. Children in Surf Club enjoyed a workshop at Braunton Burrows with Fraser, the project lead for the Dynamic Dunescapes project. Tree conservation activities, habitat supporting and learning about wildflowers in the AONB and Biosphere were well received by the young people, and we are very grateful to the National Trust for this partnership.
Adaptive Surfing sessions have been as busy as ever, and a big thanks must go the many volunteers who have been involved to make the sessions safe and possible.
In July Adaptive Surfing Lead Ian left Croyde to go and support the organisation and running of Surfing England’s Adaptive Surfing Open at The Wave. We were proud to see Surf Instructors and adaptive Surfers from North Devon in attendance, and glad for the Wave Project to be so well represented at this world class facility and event in Bristol.
In July our North Devon team headed to Watergate Bay, Cornwall. Ian and Jaz had largely organised the Summer Surf Challenge event this year, which invites young people with disabilities to come and experience surfing. The event was a huge success, with more than 60 young people entering the water to surf in a single day. Thank you to the volunteers who came all the way to Cornwall to help make it possible.
We were thrilled to be invited to the World Surf Reserve film night at Freshwell Camspite, alongside lots of other brilliant local stake holders including Plastic Free North Devon and Wave Wahines. A lovely time was had by all, and despite the rain Croyde delivered one of its outstanding sunsets.
We’d like to say thank you to Croyde Village Sunday Market who allowed us to sell our vast second hand wetsuit collection during the summer. Giving pre loved wetsuits a new lease of life, and supporting the work that we do.
Another big thank you to Andrew McCausland and the team who raised £95 through a coffee morning in the newly refurbished Georgeham Chapel we are really grateful.
Similarly, we’d like to say a big thank you to Georgeham and Croyde WI who raised £300 through their plant sale earlier in the year.
We were successful in our application to Tescos community grants scheme at the beginning of the summer. This means you can find us and vote for us with your tokens in the three Tesco stores in Barnstaple and the one in Ilfracombe until the end of September. Please support us by popping your votes in and encouraging your friends and family to do the same!
Our lovely volunteers have been busy fundraising too Amazing Sara completed three marathons in three days earlier in the year and raised over £2000.
More recently Rachel completed a swim run in Wales raising funds for us.
We’d like to thank Cliff for his incredible fundraising triathlon. At 39 Cliff experienced a stroke, drastically changing the course of his life. A few years ago he came surfing with the Wave Project and he hasn’t looked back. Last summer he got back to his feet on a board for the first time in many years, and this year he set himself a mega challenge. On 6th July he cycled from Braunton to Saunton, swam from Saunton to Croyde then walked across Croyde beach to finish his triathlon. Cliff raised over £2000 to support the continuation of Adaptive Surfing in North Devon, and we are exceptionally grateful. Huge thanks to the North Devon RNLI lifeguards who supported the swim with their staff and equipment.
If you’d like to join our team of wonderful volunteers please sign up on the Wave Project website: www.waveproject.co.uk
If you or your business could support us, then please email jaz@waveproject.co.uk
If you are interested in Adaptive Surfing please email Ian: ianb@waveproject.co.uk
If you look after a young person who would benefit from surf therapy, they will need to be referred by a professional such as a school teacher, a GP or a social worker. Contact jaz@waveproject.co.uk for more information. If you are a professional who would like to make a referral please take a look at the Wave Project website.

We have received a few emails regarding a feature we published in the September edition entitled ‘Hooray for Hedgehogs’. Please see one of those emails. We apologise for any misinformation published.
“
It was wonderful to see this feature, but I feel compelled to respond as some of the information is incorrect and very misleading. Having had hedgehogs visit our garden for about 8 years, and belong to a group of which consists of a number of Hedgehog experts and Hedgehog Rescues, I would like to take this opportunity and make some comments.
Firstly it's a myth that they eat slugs. Slugs and snails make up less than 5% of their diet, and only really eat them if there's nothing else. Quite often there will be a group of snails in and around food bowls and the hogs will always ignore them. Slugs also carry lungworm which is a hog killer.
Secondly, we should be support feeding them all the time, not just if they're looking ill or in winter.
Take the dry months we've just had. Rescues have taken in dozens of starving and dehydrated hogs, as the ground has been too hard to find food. This shows why it's so vital to provide food and water all the year round. Not all hogs hibernate particularly due to mild winters. Those that do will wake up from time to time for a top up feed and then go back to sleep.
Thirdly, if you see a sickly hog don't try and feed it yourself. There's almost always an underlying issue that needs medical intervention.
Fourthly, and most importantly, we do not encourage people to ever randomly pick up hogs for no reason! They definitely do not "respond well" to being held. They suffer severe stress that is proven to cause parasite blooms that can make them very sick. As prey animals they freeze when terrified and this unfortunately makes it easy for humans to pick them up. Their spines are their protection but no use against a human with thick gloves and bad information. Hedgehogs are wild animals and should be enjoyed from a distance, they should not be treated as pets.”
Fremington Quay was formerly a port on the estuary of the river Taw, half a mile north of the village of Fremington in North Devon.
It was once the busiest port between Bristol and Falmouth, and was significant in the import and export of many goods including coal, gravel, limestone, seed potatoes, granite and lead ore. It was also a focal point for the extraction and distribution of ball clay, and Fishley pottery.
The Taw Valley railway, which ran from Barnstaple, opened in 1848, and was extended to Bideford in 1855. It was a popular and well used line for both passengers and freight, until Dr. Beeching’s rail network cuts in 1963 eventually closed it down in 1982.
The Heritage Centre is undergoing a refurbishment, to introduce a clearer layout and presentation of information, for visitors and locals alike. This includes the introduction of audio visual “kiosks”, where you will be able to select options on a screen to take you into detail for the topic that interests you most. This could be the Quay itself, the railway and trains, pottery, ships and cargoes, local maps, or Fremington village.
There will also be seating area and a wall TV which will give the visitor a choice of 5 minute videos to watch, about the Quay, its history, the Taw estuary, and Fremington village. A ceiling mounted projector and a projection screen will be available here too.
For those visitors who are unable to ascend the stairs to “The Lookout” viewing point, which gives a wonderful view of the estuary, we are installing a CCTV camera on the roof, with a screen and control on the ground floor, so that everyone can enjoy the changing face of the estuary, as tide and weather changes.
We are planning to have all of this in place by the end of 2022.
If you have railway or pottery images, text or artefacts that you could give or lend to the Heritage Centre, we would be pleased to receive them. (See contact details at the foot of the page).
We do not have staff at the Heritage Centre currently, but we are expecting to launch a “Friends of Fremington Quay” group in 2023, who could attend once a week to provide assistance and information to visiting groups. If this is something that you would like to hear more about, please contact:

With children returning to school after their summer holidays, Dogs Trust is offering primary schools in Devon free workshops to help children learn how they can live happily and safely alongside dogs.
Dogs Trust’s free Be Dog Smart safety workshops are designed to complement areas of the curriculum and generally support classroom learning. They aim to provide children between the ages of 7-11 with the knowledge and understanding they need to act responsibly and safely around dogs in their homes and those they may see out and about.
Each workshop includes a pretend dog as its focus, with the aim of developing compassion and consideration for all living beings, through a creative and interactive learning experience.
Emily Mayo, Education and Community Officer for Dogs Trust in Devon, said:
“Returning to school after the summer break is a really exciting time as it means we are able to deliver our fun-packed Be Dog Smart workshops to thousands of children.
By teaching children how to behave safely we believe we can improve the welfare of dogs, both in the homes of the children we teach, as well as dogs they may meet when out and about in the community.
We aim to harness loving, safe relationship between children and their four legged friends so that interactions are safe and enjoyable for all.”
For more information about ‘Be Dog Smart’ workshops, please visit www.bedogsmart.org.uk To book a ‘Be Dog Smart’ workshop, please contact Emily on emily.mayo@dogstrust.org.uk
Queen Elizabeth II was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She assumed the title of Queen in 1952 after her father's death and reigned for more than 70 years until her death on 8th September 2022, making her the longest reigning monarch in British history. The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral.
Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on that Thursday.
Flags at Royal Residences were half masted and will remain half-masted until 0800hrs on the morning after the final day of Royal Mourning.
With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.
Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, it is His Majesty The King's wish that a period of Royal Mourning be observed from now until seven days after The Queen’s Funeral. The date of the Funeral will be confirmed in due course but thought to be in approximately 10 days time (18th September).
Royal Mourning will be observed by Members of the Royal Family, Royal Household staff and Representatives of the Royal Household on official duties, together with troops committed to Ceremonial Duties.
A statement from the King Charles III
“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.
We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.
During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held”.
We offer a bespoke cutting service on all our LED strips. Please call for details.

Improvements to community amenities across North Devon are on their way thanks to a funding boost of just over £278,000 from North Devon Council.
At a meeting of North Devon Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee on Monday 5 September, Councillors agreed to allocate the money, which will be used to help improve various community facilities in the areas of Barnstaple, Landkey and Tawstock:
•£111,099.60 to Fremington Parish Council towards the construction of a Multi Use Games Area at Queen Elizabeth II Playing Field, Tews Lane, Roundswell
•£15,002.19 to Tawstock Parish Council to enhance Tower View Recreation Area, Barnstaple
•£39,703.60 to North Devon Crematorium towards the creation of a memorial garden at North Devon Crematorium, Barnstaple
•£62,636.92 to North Devon District Council towards public realm improvements at Library Square, Barnstaple.
•£25,937.55 to Barnstaple and Pilton Cricket Club towards enhancements of their clubhouse at Raleigh Meadow, Barnstaple
•£7,900 to Landkey Town Football Club towards access and storage improvements at Millennium Green, Landkey
•£16,181.29 to Tawstock Village Hall towards the enhancement of Tawstock Village Hall
Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden, says: "I am thrilled that we are able to help provide funding for these public amenities through S106 funding.
"The following projects are brilliant and I'm pleased to be able to share them with you in more detail
"Fremington Parish Council plan to construct a multi use games area at Queen Elizabeth II playing fields in Roundswell. The facility will be free of charge and new footpaths will be constructed to ensure it's accessible for all.
"Tawstock Parish Council intend on using the money towards a long term project to enhance the Tower View Recreation Area for the benefit of the whole community. The next stage of the project is to improve footpath accessibility.
"North Devon Crematorium are using the money for the creation of a new memorial garden. The design will include outdoor seating, a water feature and some weather protection.
"Public Realm Improvements at Library Square will also be taking place thanks to this funding. Proposals include additional hard and soft landscaping, improved seating, art form/sculpture and general improvements to decoration.
"Barnstaple and Pilton Cricket Club are putting the funds towards their project to help support their disabled users group. Secure storage will also be purchased for pitch maintenance machinery.
"Landkey Town Football Club, similar to Barnstaple and Pilton Cricket club, plan on purchasing secure storage for pitch maintenance equipment. Funds will also be used to provide an enhanced surface to the access road to the clubhouse car park.
"Finally, Tawstock Village Hall will be installing a solar PV system on their roof to make the facility more environmentally friendly and financially viable for the future.
"Each project is wonderful and I truly believe each and every one of them will bring great benefits to our community."
Under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing extra community and social infrastructure as a result of the impact of new development.
These contributions can only be used for certain things, but are used primarily for public open space projects.
