October 2021
H
ello and welcome to the October edition. I hope you’re all well and the children have settled back into school okay?
It is now very obvious that Autumn is here as leaves are starting to fall. The Barnstaple fair has been and gone and this month the clocks also go backwards so don’t forget when you go to bed on Saturday 30th October to turn your clocks BACK one hour in preparation for 2am on Sunday morning. This month the Children’s Hospice South West has their annual Moonlight Memory Walk on 2nd October. This is such a great event to be part of so sign up if you can. Then later of course it is Halloween! We have a poster this month giving some advice from the Police on being careful when out and about for this. Please don’t knock on doors if they are displaying a ‘No Trick or Treat’ poster! We also have a fantastic competition for you this month on pages 24/25 for one lucky person to win tickets for four people to have an ice skating session, followed by a meal and a hot drink at the brand new to Barnstaple Christmas Village North Devon. Remember if you don’t enter, you can’t win!! Have a wonderful October, put your feet up and enjoy the great articles we have for you this month and see you again in November! Take Care.
Lisa Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch. Christmas 2021 looks to be a very
exciting time for Barnstaple with the introduction of the Christmas Village North Devon. This will be on the site of Tarka Tennis Centre at Seven Brethren in Barnstaple and will be providing an undercover real ice, ice rink (perfect for any weather conditions) as well as the best of the area’s local trade, food and craft stalls. Now it obviously wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa and of course Santa will be looking forward to welcoming you to the Christmas village too. The village will be opening on Friday 19th November and will celebrate the weekend with live entertainment next to the skate rink by DJ Bunny Not Bonnie. The entertainment will continue throughout the Christmas period with live music and DJ’s to keep the Christmas spirit alive. The team at Christmas Village North Devon will be supporting North Devon Hospice this year where 5% of all ice rink profits will go directly to the charity. As well as this, the team will be offering private skating sessions for the Hospice staff, residents and families in their care, that is reason alone to get booking your ice rink sessions. You can have a brilliant time with your friends and family knowing that you are also supporting a fabulous charity. Tickets for ice skating will sell fast so why not get booking now and then after your session, start your Christmas shopping at the stands, enjoy a lovely hot drink and savour some lovely food. What a great day out! Opening times will be 10am - 9pm, Monday - Friday and 10am - 10pm on the weekends from Friday 19th November - Monday 3rd January 2022, excluding Christmas Day! NORTH DEVON PARTNERSHIP AIMS TO COMBAT BATHROOM PLASTIC North Devon Soap and Broomhill Estate unite to teach traditional soap bar making. Westward Ho! based North Devon Soap and Muddiford based Broomhill Art Hotel and Sculpture Garden have announced a collaboration to promote soap bars as an alternative to using liquid soap sold in oil-based plastic bottles. Planned actions include promoting 100% natural soap bars for guest use during their stay and running training courses teaching students how to make soap bars at home.
Kantar, the world’s leading data, insights and consulting company, report UK consumers are turning to soap bars. Liquid soap became popular in the 1990’s, but in the year to 14 July 2019, shoppers spent £68.6m on bars of soap, up 4% on the year before. Liquid or plastic soap sales are declining 4.5% year on year. Their research showed 63% of the British population were “extremely” or “very” concerned about reducing the amount of packaging they require.
General Manager, Broomhill Estate. “The Broomhill Estate lies in a glorious, undulating valley in North Devon, surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodland and bound by its own stream. Learning how to make your own natural soap bars helps reduce plastic in our homes. This is a perfect fit for us.”
Broomhill will be retailing Artisan, Everyday and Ocean soap bars from North Devon Soap to residents and visitors as well as hosting soap making courses. The first course will take place “We are delighted to be announcing this on Saturday 16th October 2021. The 2.5 partnership with Broomhill”, confirmed hour course includes an instructional Helen Cross, co-founder, North Devon introduction to soap making, a practical Soap. “Learning how to make your own demonstration and a chance to make soap bars is fulfilling and great for your their own soap under the watchful eye mental health. Being able to reduce the of soap maker, Helen Cross. Attendees amount of oil-based plastic in will be taking home 7-8 bars of soap bathrooms helps protect nature by they will make themselves. The course reducing the amount of oil-based plastic cost of £80 will include all soap making used for liquid soap.” materials, lunch at Broomhill Hotel and access to the Sculpture Gardens. With Greenpeace reporting less than 10% of UK everyday plastic getting recycled, it is no surprise Kantar’s study showed 70% of those surveyed plan to shop more sustainably. “We fully appreciate the need to look after nature”, commented Jacqui Dabell, To advertise simply email lisa@insightmags.co.uk or call 01237 422074

What a difference a day makes The Filo Project is a not-for-profit organisation offering high quality day care for small groups of older people. We support individuals across Devon and Somerset who are socially isolated, many experiencing symptoms associated with moderate dementia. Each day is provided by a host, and takes place in the intimate setting of a host’s own home. This warm and welcoming environment is key and no client is overwhelmed by a large group. Apart from having a home-cooked lunch, what occurs in each group varies, and very much depends on who is in a group, and their capacities, preferences and personalities. It is a bespoke service, however, the focus of any day is to provide the opportunity for meaningful socialising. A day with The Filo Project is like a day out with friends, and, at a stage of life where many older people often find themselves excluded The Filo Project provides a time and space to feel at ease and be valued. A by-product of our service is that carers can enjoy regular and extended respite. Transport is also provided. For more information visit www.thefiloproject.co.uk or contact us on 0333 939 8225 : info@thefiloproject.co.uk

POLICE Sextortion - If you’ve never met them, are they who they say they are online? If you get a friend request on social media or in an email from someone you have never met before, be very cautious. Criminals befriend victims online by using a fake identity and then persuade them to perform sexual or otherwise compromising acts in front of their webcam or in a video message. The video is recorded by the criminals who then threaten to share the images with the victims’ friends and family, blackmailing the victim to pay them money to prevent this happening. • Be very careful about who you befriend online, especially if you’re considering sharing anything intimate with them. • The attractive person in the video chat may have been coerced themselves. A profile photo may be of someone completely different. • It is best not to share intimate images or sexual acts online even with people you know. Once images are out on the web they are very difficult to get rid of.
If it’s happened to you, don’t panic. • Don’t pay up. The criminal may publish the compromising images anyway or they may come back to you for more money. • End all communication with the blackmailers.
• Contact the police. You can do that using any of the non-emergency methods here: www.dc.police.uk/contact
• If you’re under 18 years old, speak to an adult you trust immediately or get in touch with CEOP
(the police Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command) https://www.ceop.police.uk/ceopreporting
