A Jazz Musician in Lockdown As with most regular working musicians, lockdown was probably intended for us all to become virtuosos. That was the plan in the first month but after a while the dust starts to settle on our instruments and the spiders move in and find places only seen by my luthiers. A jazz musician in isolation lockdown was not a good place to be, no gigs and looking for something to do. I could write another popular book or record another album or do something totally new and out of character and out of my comfort zone perhaps? I watched a lady across the road sit in the sun in her garden all day. She never moved. I never saw her face, head down wearing a large French summer hat. I presumed she was asleep. But she was painting. She gave me some paint and brushes - I was in lockdown getting bored and decided to give it a go and learn. Trees, seascapes didn't interest me. I play many musical instruments and I collect tropical fish so I decided to turn tropical fish into musical instruments. I enclosed my first painting on a comment I made about sea conservation on social media and it was picked up by a world charity sea conservation organisation called “Just One Ocean” and sponsor of a hugely controversial TV program called “Seaspiracy”. They liked and wanted to use one of my designs for a summer promotion t shirt about over fishing. My new naive form of art was being recognised and I was soon made an ambassador of the company. I decided to design and paint more. My theme was painting in acrylics quirky pop art musical fish with names that played musical instruments, formed an underwater band and preserved the ocean from plastic waste and pollution. The plan was to write another book - this time a children's book with my painted illustrations encouraging children to learn an instrument. They became popular and I was asked to make prints, which soon became cards selling on the internet. Shops loved them and started to stock them. So far I have designed/painted over 10 characters all individual instrumental music playing fish. Gigs will come back but my story continues, still designing, still painting, still expanding my new lockdown friends - The Musical Fish. Deano is a threeyear-old Cane Corso cross Giant Schnauzer. With a largerthan-life personality, Deano is fun, exuberant and loves to go on adventures. He is instantly friendly with new people and is affectionate and loving if you know him well. Deano isn't too fond of car travel so would love to have some adventurous hikes close to his home. He can be very strong on the lead so his new family would need to continue to help him with his loose-lead walking. Deano can make friends with other dogs if introduced calmly, and would benefit from some doggy walking friends. He’d also love some quiet, peaceful walks too, as he can be overwhelmed if there are a lot of dogs nearby. He enjoys playing with toys and he knows a few tricks, especially in exchange for a tasty treat. Deano would love a pet-free adult-only home with active adopters who can keep him busy. He may take some time to settle in, but in the right home, he’ll be a loving, rewarding pet.

If you think you could give Deano the forever home he is looking for, please go to www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming to start the virtual adoption process. Dogs Trust Ilfracombe holds Information Days every Sunday. If you would like to take a tour of the centre, meet members of the team and see the dogs spending time with their canine carers, please go to www.dogstrust.org.uk/ourcentres to book a place. We are now into October and this month brings two things, darker evenings and Halloween night on the 31st. With the hour changing later this month it will start to get darker a lot earlier. Please check yours and your children’s bicycles for working lights. Too many cyclists are putting themselves in danger riding around without lights. It is an offence not to have working lights on your bikes while cycling during the hours of darkness Please don’t let yourself or your child become another road traffic statistic. Halloween night or as its now commonly known as Trick or Treat is becoming more popular every year with large numbers taking part in Braunton. Most young children are escorted by an adult to keep them safe but as your children get older the pressure to let them go out on their own with friend’s increases. Please consider these safety tips to pass on to them to help keep them safe.       



Older children should let you know where they are going and when they will be back. If possible, make sure they carry a mobile phone. Remind your children not to enter anyone’s house. Make sure they can be seen and stay in well lit areas and on pavements at all times. Carry a torch and consider road safety at all times. Be sensible when out in a group with other teenagers. Respect homeowners who do not want to answer their door or where the No Trick or Treat sign is displayed. Warn them of the dangers they can get themselves into regarding the ‘trick’ part. Tricks can go wrong; people could become aggressive, and it could land your child in a lot of trouble. Do not throw items such as eggs or flour at people houses.

The Braunton Neighbourhood Team will be patrolling the area to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves and don't act in an anti-social manner. For those taking part, Halloween is meant to be fun. Please remember this so the evening can be enjoyed by all. Thank You.

BRAUNTON PARISH COUNCIL

THE BRAUNTON EXPRESS October 2021

Braunton Parish Council Declare Housing Crisis Braunton Parish Council is joining with other communities in North Devon to declare a housing emergency. The Council at its meeting on Tuesday 10 August unanimously voted to declare a Housing Crisis in Braunton. Some Braunton Parish residents are unable to remain within the community, causing:  families to be disconnected,  support networks to be disrupted or destroyed,  a loss of community cohesion,  detrimental mental health effects on residents and their children,  a disruption to the education of affected children, and  an environmental effect caused through increased journey lengths Chair of Braunton Parish Council, Councillor Liz Spear, says: “Calling a Housing Crisis highlights the urgency to provide affordable housing locally. It has become increasingly obvious that there is a growing problem arising out of second homes, and certainly since the Pandemic the issue of affordable homes, particularly for the younger generation, has become an even bigger issue locally”. 32

With more people wanting to visit North Devon, tenants are being served notice and rentals are being turned into holiday accommodation. In addition to this the purchase of housing for holiday homes has created a perfect storm. Local people cannot afford the prices being asked for rented accommodation, and also there are just not enough properties for the number of rentals needed. To help tackle this issue Braunton Parish Council will be contacting North Devon Council to request that they consider the effect that Short Term Lets are having on the ability of the North Devon residents to afford and own their own homes in their home towns/villages. The Chair, Councillor Elizabeth Spear, says: “It is important that the Council works with other local authorities and organisations as it would not be possible to achieve the Council’s proposed target by working alone.”

Policing in Braunton The feedback we have received from the Police is that crimes in Braunton may be going unreported. Police resources in the area are assigned according to the figures. To ensure the level of policing in Braunton represents the demand we all need to ensure that any incident is recorded which means reporting all crimes and antisocial behaviour in Braunton to the Police. There may be multiple incidents seen on social media but this would not increase the police presence and incidents will not be recorded unless reported through the official means. All non-emergencies can be reported by dialing 101 or: Report Crime Online – dc.police.uk/ crimereporting

This excerpt was taken from the Braunton Police Newsletter on taking the “Anti” away from Antisocial behaviour. “Anti-social behaviour, also known as ASB, is linked to how safe people feel. Persistent ASB can have a significant impact on people’s lives. Groups displaying intimidating, abusive and rowdy behaviours are distressing for others, and will not be tolerated in Devon and Cornwall. We know there isn’t one simple solution to anti-social behaviour, but you can help us, and our partners take the ‘anti’ away from anti-social by reporting issues. Your reports help officers understand where the hotspots are.”

DAVID V GOLIATH ROUND 2- Legal action to prevent uncontrolled EXpansion on green fields of the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty The EXcellent News - With the generous support of hundreds of people, both residents of North Devon and visitors, CARA successfully applied to The High Court in March this year and quashed an unlawful planning permission that allowed static caravans anywhere within the red line shown on the aerial shot below. The red line is based on an incorrect plan of Ruda Holiday Park that Parkdean submitted with the planning application. So good so far! The EXceedingly Bad News – Parkdean have made an application to the Court of Appeal to overturn the High Court decision and reinstate the unlawful planning permission. If, successful this will enable Parkdean to expand the holiday park into green fields of the AONB free from any conditions or controls that help protect or mitigate the impact on the environment and the beautiful natural landscape. The area for potential development is huge, circa 22 hectares. Green fields could be covered with lines and lines of static caravans with tons of concrete for their bases, more traffic on the roads with accompanying air and noise pollution, poor water quality issues with increased water run off onto Croyde Bay beach, more strain on struggling sewage, drains and road infrastructures. Surrounding traffic routes to Croyde through Braunton, Barnstaple would be affected. Light pollution will increase near Baggy and Middleborough Hill (great spots for stargazing) and harm caused to sensitive natural habitats. More information can be found on: www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-north-devon-coastaonb Any support (however big or small) will make a difference. Please share and spread the word to help stop harm that could affect people living or visiting here, now and for future generations. We have an opportunity right now to stop this before it is too late – the High Court decision in March shows what can be achieved when many people act together. A big heartfelt thank you www.cara-northdevon.co.uk

What a difference a day makes The Filo Project is a not-for-profit organisation offering high quality day care for small groups of older people. We support individuals across Devon and Somerset who are socially isolated, many experiencing symptoms associated with moderate dementia. Each day is provided by a host, and takes place in the intimate setting of a host’s own home. This warm and welcoming environment is key and no client is overwhelmed by a large group. Apart from having a home-cooked lunch, what occurs in each group varies, and very much depends on who is in a group, and their capacities, preferences and personalities. It is a bespoke service, however, the focus of any day is to provide the opportunity for meaningful socialising. A day with The Filo Project is like a day out with friends, and, at a stage of life where many older people often find themselves excluded The Filo Project provides a time and space to feel at ease and be valued. A by-product of our service is that carers can enjoy regular and extended respite. Transport is also provided. For more information visit www.thefiloproject.co.uk or contact us on 0333 939 8225 : info@thefiloproject.co.uk
