Ask for Jake is a local charity run by a team of dedicated volunteers who work to raise awareness of challenges and improve the mental health of the local community. I was recently invited to Reed Chillcheater to have a visit around their premises. To say I was impressed is an understatement! I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought that the only service they provided was wetsuit and drysuit repairs but how wrong was I! Chris showed me around their factory explaining everything that they took on there. The business started from Chris’ home garage in 1999 and has progressed to two units. Reed Chillcheater are manufacturers of all outdoor activity clothing, winning ‘Best Technical Clothing Manufacturers 2023 - South West’ by SME News. At their premises in Chapel Street, they manufacture Aquatherm stretch garments in 140 styles and colours and 20,000 options of different products for outdoor recreational activities, which are shipped throughout the world. In 1999 they won the British Plastics Award for developing Aquatherm, which is a full stretch, waterproof and thermal fabric. But it doesn’t stop there - Reed Chillcheater manufacture suits for Olympic athletes and multi day expeditioners such as climbing Mount Everest, using materials produced only in the UK. They have also manufactured flesh coloured film suits for all outdoor activities for actors in the following films to name a few: Harry Potter, James Bond, Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones and The Hours. During covid they were approached to manufacture upper and lower torso seals/garments for those people with respiratory problems who would have to have iron lung treatment, these products enabled patients to stay conscious during recovery and just be wearing the 16 garments. To advertise call 07561 890 588 or email mag@ex33.co.uk
They also make and adapt garments for war veterans and people with disabilities so they can still enjoy watersports. Super thermal underwear! Another completely unique fabric developed by REED is TRANSPIRE Fleece. This provides the highest weight-to-warmth ratio of any sporting fabric - wet or dry! Regularly chosen and used by the special forces. Reed Chillcheater welcomes walk-in customers for wetsuit/drysuit repairs and they also recycle old wetsuits so are contributing to their zero to landfill policy.

Be Bright, Be Seen, This Winter. Devon and Cornwall Police are urging pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists to make themselves more visible as the evenings draw in. Now that November is here and with the clocks going back at the end of last month, the days get shorter and the colder weather starts to set in, other road users will become less visible to motorists, so we are reminding everyone, it is important to be seen not only at night, but also during the day, especially when we have inclement weather.
Walking and cycling are two of the healthiest ways to travel, but when the light or weather is poor, easy-to-see clothing is a must. Whether you travel by foot or on two wheels, it’s crucial to invest in high-visibility clothing and stay safe on the road. Bright, highly visible colours make sense when out in daylight, whereas highly reflective materials are crucial in low light conditions. Even wearing an inexpensive hi-visibility bib or rucksack cover, could make a big difference. A reminder that using a bicycle during the hours of darkness means you must have working front and back lights to use the bike on the road. It’s disappointing to see the number of adult cyclists who ignore this setting a bad example to the younger generation. THE BRAUNTON EXPRESS November 2023
Braunton Parish Civic Service
Formal Adoption of the Braunton Neighbourhood Plan
We are delighted to inform you that a collection made at the parish civic service, held on Sunday 17 September at St Brannock’s Church, raised £217.83. Together with an anonymous donation of £233 the total raised was £450.83 which has been donated to the upkeep and maintenance of the fabric of St Brannock’s Church. We were pleased to hear that the church have very kindly offered to match fund the collection and donate £450.83 to the Libya Floods Appeal.
Residents voted YES in the Neighbourhood Plan referendum recently and agreed that they wanted North Devon District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Braunton Parish to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area.

Milverton, a two-year-old German Pointer, is looking for a loving, active, and adult forever home at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe. Full of fun and exuberance, Milverton loves to play with toys, and his favourite is a ball. He knows how to ‘sit’, and ‘wait’ and puts these into action when playing fetch. He enjoys going for long walks and he does not mind if other dogs join him, however he can be quite strong on the lead. A sensitive soul, Milverton can be unsure in new situations and is wary of going through doorways. He can be nervous of men who are unknown to him, however it does not take him long to make new friends and a game of fetch is a great start to the relationship.

Milverton is very affectionate and adores having a fuss, however he lacks confidence in general. Treats and toys act as a reward for him, and this can help him cope in new environments. The ideal home for Milverton would be set in a rural area, with a nice secure garden as he loves his outdoor space to bound around in. Milverton has high exercise needs so would fit in well with adult adopters who love long walks. He would be best suited as the only dog in the home, with opportunities to socialise with other dogs when out and about. He has no history with living with cats, small furries, or livestock. He has been okay passing by horses. Milverton would benefit from walks away from traffic as he can be worried by passing vehicles. He has not experienced home life before and therefore may need help with his housetraining. Any time left alone is best built up gradually as he adores being around his people. If you think you could give Milverton the loving home that he deserves please visit - https:// www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/pointer/1268002

Repair Cafes Our growing network of Repair Cafes are a hub for community engagement encouraging people to come together, share skills and a cuppa, and repair what might otherwise get thrown away! Got a pair of ripped jeans, a bike with a flat tyre, a teddy bear in need of a patch, a sewing machine that’s stopped sewing, or a clock that’s stopped ticking? Bring it along to one of our Repair Cafes and see if one of our superstar volunteers can help give it a new lease of life. We have even enlisted the help of a tech whizz to help with your IT woes! Our Repair Cafes depend on a network of dedicated volunteers. To be accessible and inclusive for all, our Repair Cafes are held central locations across North Devon where people can reach us easily by foot or by public transport, plus there is no charge for repairs, but we welcome donations. They are an intergenerational event that brings the community together to build resilience, keep the climate conversation going, help people to feel empowered to combat the climate crisis together and provide the opportunity to interlink different community groups with a common goal. We also help promote other community Repair Cafes that have sprung up independently, such as those at Bideford and High Bickington and Atherington and are available to help get one set up and off the ground. To support the cost of living crisis, we also partnered with 361 Energy to identify those in need and stitch thermal linings into curtains. What have our Repair Cafes achieved? Repair Cafes in numbers so far in 2023: 18 Repair Cafes have been held across North Devon in 2023 so far (a total of 37 since we started in 2021) 180 items have been repaired, covering clothing, textiles, electronics, bikes and carpentry (351 in total since 2021) 74 volunteers gave up their time to bring life back to damaged items and keeping them rom landfill 278 hours have been dedicated by our super star volunteers 5 locations; Braunton, Ilfracombe and Landkey and new to 2023; we have launched two new regular Repair Cafes in Barnstaple and South Molton 46
To advertise call 07561 890 588 or email mag@ex33.co.uk
How did it all start? We started our Repair Cafe journey back in 2021 when our Sea-EO, Claire, had a conversation with a local sewer and community champion Sue Gilbert, and the fire was ignited. So after navigating Covid restrictions, our very first self-funded Repair Cafe was born in our home town of Braunton, North Devon. Right from the very beginning, it was clear there was a demand for a repair service and it grew rapidly thanks to our incredible network of volunteers, invested stakeholders, community effort and funding from the National Lottery Together For Our Planet Fund. The impact of Repair Cafes: Saving pennies and the planet Repair Cafes are a great way to combat fast fashion and throwaway culture, and also provide an important community space to open up the conversation and help people to feel empowered to combat the climate crisis together. The environmental and climate crisis and the cost of living crisis are not separate issues. Repair Cafes are a simple but effective solution that addresses the times we’re living in a way that benefits people, and also the planet. We do not have finite resources, whether we’re talking on a household level or a planetary level, so finding ways to repair, reuse, or repurpose what we already have is vital for our communities and planet to be able to thrive. Where and when are our Repair Cafes? We run a number of Repair Cafes each month across the following locations: Braunton, at Museum of British Surfing Landkey, at Willow’s Tearoom Ilfracombe, at The Earth Repair Shop and hand:plant cafe Barnstaple, at St John’s Community Centre (sometimes in different locations) South Molton, YMCA The offerings vary at each cafe and month to month, so please check our What’s On page or Facebook Events for more information on upcoming Repair Cafes around North Devon. What does the future hold for Repair Cafes in North Devon? The aim of our Repair Cafe network is to build on the cafes we already have to ensure their sustainability and also to ensure that we broaden our reach. We would also like to set up skills sharing workshops in the communities that our cafes are located in. We would also like to run skills sharing workshops in each community which we hope will offer an opportunity to diversify and reach other communities including refugees, young families, deprived communities and those that can’t attend our Repair Cafes. Workshops will provide vital skills, giving people the power to repair their own items at home and offer repairs to their own communities and neighbourhoods. Funding opportunity - Be part of the solution We are looking for businesses and community organisations to help fund our individual cafes. It is a fantastic way to have a real impact in the community. Please get inPlease touch tomention find out more info@plasticfreenorthdevon.org EX33on when responding to adverts

Cats of the Month - Ginger & Jet
Ginger and his sister Jet are two very friendly and sweet natured cats. They have been much loved pets living with the same family since kittenhood but sadly due to no fault of their own now need to find a new home. Ginger is a big softy who will look at you longingly for some attention and if need be may meow or give you a little tap with his paw just in case you may not have noticed him. He will come when called and reply if spoken to. Jet too will come when called, hoping for a bit of fuss and maybe some play. She is a beautiful black puss who loves attention, and does also enjoy a good lap to sit on. Although both are now eight years old they do still like to have regular play sessions with their human companions. They are happy sharing a home together but it's human company they love most, so do you have room in your home and hearts to give these loveliest of cats a second chance of happiness.
