The Rotary Club of Braunton We’re Back at the William’s Arms After nearly 18 months with no meetings, we have now returned our normal club venue. Our first lunchtime guest speaker Ali Hunt gave us an enlightened talk on how the North Devon Hospice had been able to continue operating throughout lock downs and the restrictions we have all had to deal with during this pandemic. The Hospice is one of the many charities that we support on a regular basis. The Club usually meets weekly at the William’s Arms in Wrafton at 12.30pm on Wednesdays with lunch at 1.00pm. We organise events throughout the year to raise funds for local charities and other causes. Apart from our fundraising projects we also support the local community, the flower displays around the village are maintained by our members with the help of local businesses and helpers. If you get a friend request on social media or in an email from someone you have never met before, be very cautious. This type of crime has happened locally, so we need to make you aware. Criminals befriend victims online by using a fake identity and then after a period of time exchanging messages they persuade them to perform sexual or otherwise compromising acts in front of their webcam or in a video message usually after being sent one by the criminal. The video is recorded by the criminals who then threaten to share the images with the victims’ friends and family, blackmailing the victim to pay them money to prevent this happening.

Be very careful about who you befriend online, especially if you’re considering sharing anything intimate with them. The attractive person in the video chat may have been coerced themselves. A profile photo may be of someone completely different and any videos sent are not of them.
It is best not to share intimate images or sexual acts online even with people you know. Once images are out on the web they are very difficult to get rid of. If it’s happened to you, don’t panic. Don’t pay up. The criminal may publish the compromising images anyway or they may come back to you for more money. End all communication with the blackmailers. Contact the police. The Modern Day Diesel The DPF (diesel particulate filter) is a filter within the exhaust system that retains carbon preventing black diesel smoke and harmful fumes from entering the atmosphere. Unfortunately DPFs can block up with this carbon causing many problems. Contributing factors include using cut price diesel, short journeys and a lack of oil changes. A vehicle will self clean its DPF after so many cycles or journeys but in order to do so it must be at a set temperature and has to be travelling for a length of time. After so many cycles of not being able to regenerate the filter will block causing loss of power, the engine light to come on and the vehicle will go into a limp mode. In this case you will either have to replace the DPF at a very high cost, have it removed and sent away for cleaning or in most cases it can be cleaned on the car at a fraction of the cost of a new one. We are able to clean most DPFs on the vehicle, restoring them back to a good working condition. If you require more information please give us a call on 01271 812295.
