Hello Bideford Hi, welcome to the November edition of the

The seasons are changing fast, it will soon be Christmas. Time to put on the wellington boots and kick up the Autumn leaves.

We have lots of interesting things to do around this time of year from markets to concerts as well as all the jobs at home and in the garden.

Whatever you are doing, just remember that somewhere in the world are people less fortunate than yourself. We haven’t got it that bad really. No war, no drought or natural disaster to speak of.

Bideford As the clocks go back it is a sign of the shorter days approaching. With all the rain in the late summer it is predicted that we will have a spectacular Autumn, let us hope we see this before the leaves fall. At the time of writing the Horse Chestnut trees are looking fabulous with conkers a-plenty.

And right next to the Horse Chestnuts is our newly planted Coronation Rose Bed. With two roses yet to come, the bed will be an absolute picture and when completed we will send a picture to His Majesty, along with pictures of the benches.

The Manor Court Orchard has been planted and adorned with a plaque.

We would like to thank the Bideford Bridge Trust for the use of the site and look forward to working with them in planting pear, plum and cherry trees.

As mentioned in our piece last month, our Mayor was invited to Alcester (pron. Alster) for their Court Leet. As was anticipated it was very different to our Manor Court and, as the ceremony is very ancient, there are many forms of interpretation. It reminded the Mayor and his Beadle that we work very hard with our Presentments. But the visit was very successful and raised much interest with other participating Councils.

As the winter months approach, it is a reminder of the loved ones that have been lost in both WWI and WWII and the conflicts that have gone since. Bideford will be respecting the Fallen on Sunday 12th November in Victoria Park. Armistice Day falls the day before on Saturday 11th “Mayor Jamie with Cllr Peter Christie at the Orchard” November, and this Council will be laying wreaths at St Mary’s Church, Victoria Park and Chudleigh Fort.

Application forms for our 2024-2025 Community Grants for Bideford clubs, organisations and voluntary groups will be available from 6th November by calling the office or emailing (details at the foot of this page) and will be available on our website from 8 th November. The deadline for forms to be returned will be Monday 8th January 2024.

The Mayor, Jamie McKenzie has arranged for a Charity Bingo night in the Town Hall. These were hugely successful with the former Mayor, and as she will be the caller, we are hoping for more success. The date is Friday 24th November. Doors open 6.30pm, Eyes Down 7.15pm sharp. Adults only, tickets £10 includes a 6-game book, flyer and raffle tickets.

We are delighted to announce that tickets will be on sale soon for our special 450 th Charter Anniversary presentation. A historical evening with the Maritime and Historical Archaeologist Professor Mark Horton. He says about himself “Throughout my career, I have been a passionate advocate for the public understanding of the past – through TV, radio and media. I was closely involved in the early series of Time Team (Channel 4), and presented Time Flyers (BBC2, 2002-4), and Coast (BBC2 2005-2016) and have worked with the History, National Geographic and Discovery channels. “ Mark has uncovered a great deal of interesting facts about Elizabethan Bideford and is joining us on Saturday 16th December to share his findings. Tickets will be £5 each, there will be nibbles and refreshments, as well as a raffle. For both the Mayor’s Bingo and our Special 450th Charter Anniversary evening, if you wish to reserve tickets please contact us – details at the foot of this page. Unfortunately, we cannot accept card payments.

Finally, with our D-Day 80 celebrations underway we are appealing to all Bidefordians to come to us with names of loved ones, friends, family members who were involved in the D-Day Landings and from Bideford please do get in touch with us so that we can include their names in our roll call at this historical event. – details at the foot of this page. Even if we only manage to find a few, we would love to include them.

Northam As early autumn is now upon us, Northam Town Council hopes all residents are enjoying the Indian Summer as much as possible. The warm weather helps the Council with its outdoor work, though that is only part of what we do.

You will see a small new Council truck nipping about. After a successful hire period over the summer, the Council chose to replace its oldest truck with a brand new electric powered model. It has proved capable of dealing with the needs of the Council and the local terrain well, not slowed by our hills and importantly not adding to local pollution.

There is a good deal of work going on in and around the play spaces across the three villages. The Council has acquired another play area, the one on the corner of Wren Close and Benson Drive. A maintenance plan is being drawn up, though the equipment is generally in good condition.

Appledore skatepark at Churchfields car park has been refurbished, something that needs to be done every three years or so. The large multi-play unit, costing over £20,000, at Anchor Park is due to be replaced as soon as the unit has arrived from the manufacturer.

Staying in Appledore, the Council has also taken ownership of the land known as ‘Blackies’ on Torridge Road. The Council asks that people don’t use the path to access the top of west Appledore, the track through from the top is not a public footpath.

Three of the tennis courts in Westward Ho! are being renovated with the help of the Lawn Tennis Association, who are funding £80,000 of the cost. Northam Town Council is providing the rest of the funding, in the region of £30,000. The fourth court space will be retained to become a hard-surface play area in the future. Also, at Westward Ho! Park, the old toilet block attached to the pavilion has been highlighted as an ideal location for a Changing Place toilet facility, which differs from standard accessible toilet as it provide an adult-sized changing bench, hoist, more space (especially around the toilet). The Council has been Crowdfunding and seeking grants and donations for this facility, which will be match-funded (up to £25,000) from a fund from the government held by Torridge District Council.

The Council hopes to relaunch its Speedwatch campaign in the near future. Further announcements will be made in due course.

Planning for the future, the Council has appointed a working group to review its Vision and Strategy. Work continues on it, and it is expected Full Council will be able to consider this new document at its November 2023 meeting. Allied to this, the Council’s Neighbourhood Plan Advisory Group will be considering the changes suggested by the pre-consultation exercise held earlier this year.
