Step, Splash, Stride: Resolutions in Nature’s Guide Written by Hannah Barnett “New Year, New Me” can feel like an exciting concept as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve; however, it’s a daunting phrase for many. There can be a lot of pressure that shadows the new year—especially when you’re trying to do things the “right way” and fulfil those resolutions.

This article aims to approach the New Year with a relaxed mindset, mirroring the calm atmosphere of our lovely North Devon and its special spots where you can gently introduce those intimidating resolutions.

Wild swimming (or cold-water swimming) is a wonderful way to heal the soul and fuel the mind. This resolution is an especially positive choice if you struggle with anxiety. Even though the initial touch of freezing water may shock you, it teaches the body’s nervous system not to panic and to find its balance again.

A quaint, tucked-away spot to begin this new hobby is Simonsbath, Exmoor—located on the Two Moors Way. Take a walk along the heath and you’ll find a plunge pool that can awaken your soul and replenish your mental clarity, immune system, and blood circulation.

If swimming isn’t the way you want to dive into the New Year, why not take up jogging instead? Running is a classic resolution that comes up often in these conversations, but as someone who started this year, I now see why. Not only does running build stronger bones and strengthen your heart, it’s also a great way to feel relief and get outside.

Wistlandpound Reservoir, situated near Blackmoor Gate, is the perfect spot to start your running journey. The route is easy to follow, and two laps around the nature-filled reservoir make a 5k run—a great starting point for building up those kilometres while being surrounded by woodland. Try spotting North Devon’s wildlife as you go, including buzzards perched in the trees, deer in the early mornings, or hedgehogs at dusk.

On the other hand, if you have a sense of wonder you’re yearning to satisfy, this next resolution might be the one for you: hiking. Why not treat yourself to some new hiking boots and take to the wild moors as a way to better yourself in 2026?

Hiking is known to benefit grounding and “rebalancing.” As well as these mindful aspects, it can also aid your physical health. It’s not always intense cardio workouts that get the blood pumping—sometimes it’s simply spending time in nature and taking a long stride.

“Fairy Woods,” as some like to call it—officially known as Wistman’s Wood—is an ancient woodland situated in the West Dart Valley (Dartmoor). Not only is it a preserved, beautiful walking spot, but for the more whimsical amongst us, it also holds a legendary, mystical reputation filled with primeval lore and ghost stories. So where better to take a stroll and get lost in your imagination than in woods that feel almost supernatural?

I hope this article sparks a sense of inspiration and motivation for your New Year ideation, and helps you discover new ways to enjoy the slow days of January.
