HMay 2025

ello and welcome to the May edition.

Two bank holidays to look forward to this month! The first on the 5th and then on the 26th again.

North Devon Insight - The Next Generation! As the magazines move into their 20th year of serving the community, there will be some new changes ahead ~ Same Name ~ Same magazine but with New Management! As I prepare to hand over the reins of running the magazine to my son Danny Coppard.

I will still be in the back ground ensuring that the hand over goes along smoothly and efficiently to provide the same service as the last 20 years has provided.

Welcome on board Danny!

Have an amazing May!

Lisa

Finally, if you would like to advertise your business to homes across Barnstaple and the surrounding areas each month, please get in touch.

At Barnstaple Town Council we have a busy May as we prepare for a calendar full of events.

Barnstaple Mayor’s Country Music Hoedown (Sunday 4th May, 4pm – 9pm) Barnstaple Pannier Market, £15pp. We are delighted to invite residents and visitors to this year’s charity event. Enjoy a day of live country music, line dancing, a hog roast, mechanical bull ride plus lots more. The event supports the Mayor’s chosen charities, Clarity and Special Olympics North Devon. The Hoedown is open to people aged 12+, under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets available in advance online at barnstapletowncouncil.gov.uk

We’re looking forward to being involved in the VE Day weekend of celebrations led by the Veterans Charity (8th – 11th May). As a Town Council, we will be holding a flag-raising ceremony in Rock Park, 9am – 10am on the Thursday, we encourage residents to take part in commemorating this important occasion.

We will also be hosting our 1920’s exhibition (29th – 31st May) at the Guildhall. Come along to explore what life was like in Barnstaple and North Devon during the 1920’s. This event will be part of a larger Devon wide celebration of ‘Devon in the 1920’s’.

At Barnstaple Town Council and One Barnstaple we’re pleased to be involved in the #ConnectinngBarnstaple Career and Jobs Fair (Thursday 5th June, 10am2pm) at the Pannier Market. This is a chance for employers and job seekers to connect. For more information head to: barnstapletowncouncil.gov.uk.

Barnstaple festival launches search for volunteers

If you haven’t discovered the annual Barnstaple Fringe TheatreFest yet, then 2025 is the year to get involved.

The theatre festival is back for its 19th year and promises a four-day feast of comedy, drama, street-theatre, dance, children’s theatre, music, magic and more in Barnstaple from the 26-29 June.

The festival has just launched their search for volunteers. Roles include selling tickets, stewarding shows, reviewing and even operating the lights.

Pete Buffery, volunteer and co-director, explains, ‘There’s a range of volunteering experiences on offer at the festival. You could do an hour or two of selling tickets or stewarding shows, or you could get stuck in with the full week, setting up venues and putting up posters. Volunteers can even sign up to shifts themselves so they can be in control of their own time and get to see the shows they want to see.’

Debbie Munro, also volunteer and co-director, said ‘It’s such a fun four days. You can volunteer on your own, or with a friend, either way everyone is friendly and welcoming.’

The festival is a non-profit volunteer-run event and is made possible thanks to the support of local supporters and businesses. This year the festival is supported by festival sponsor Lineal Software Support, alongside Wollens Solicitors, Hortons Estate Agents, Peninsula Management, David Wilson Partnership and Rosie Bracher Solicitors.

Ticket prices are £4 - £8 and there are also many pay-what-you-will performances to give North Devon audiences extraordinary variety at excellent prices.

To find out more and get involved go to www.theatrefest.co.uk or contact office@theatrefest.co.uk

FEATURE

Is your Dryrobe meant to be worn to the shops?

Dryrobe, the North Devon-based multi-million-pound company, has changed the lives of many country bumpkins with surfing, athletics and overall beach experience. Founded in 2010 by Gideon Bright on the rocky coast of Woolacombe, the innovative clothing product was made to ease the shock of the harsh Atlantic Ocean temperatures and create a warming, colourful and comfy changing affair.

However, since the company’s invention over a decade ago now, the Devonian brand has taken a bit of a turn when it comes to their original wardrobe location. Millennials, youngsters and even dogs have created a theme of styling their warm jackets in more urban locations. Shops, small towns, cinemas and the afternoon school pick-up are a few indications of their new, added purpose.

Many people in the area don’t enjoy this overuse of the jackets, with sarcastic social media group chats being made and witty stereotypes emerging under the ‘Dryrobe culture’. However, others see it as a positive fashion affair. It demonstrates the wearability, genuine warmth and high quality of the brand's products. Dryrobe is known for their sustainability awareness – since 2020 their Advance Products have all been made with 100% recycled fabrics. Not only this, but in 2016 the company collaborated with Adidas for Team GB… No wonder these coats are now being worn everywhere.

Kitty Sampson, a captain at Titans Netball Club, told me that the club had a branding deal with the notorious DryRobe. The side of a netball pitch is another off-grid location for the brand, but this time it was intentional. ‘I find Dryrobes so handy; they're easy to chuck on and off when I’m waiting on a cold court or pitch.’ Emphasising their quality and diversity as a product – from helping a netballer encourage teammates on the side to comforting a freezing surfer after catching waves.

Another reason why Dryrobe has expanded their wearability culture may have something to do with Gen Z’s influencer effect and social media star coverage. For example, Lexie Kelly, an Instagram influencer with 180k followers, posted a reel changing into the jacket, gaining attention, as well as singer Rita Ora being spotted sporting her Dryrobe on a film set back in 2019, which sparked a notable difference in where these jackets ‘should’ be worn. Lastly, the star cast of Netflix hit ‘Bridgerton ’ posted a handful of behind the scenes filming shots all on the regency set…wearing Dryrobes.

However, the local company hasn’t forgotten their roots. Dryrobe has recently announced their new ambassador, who is a professional surfer. Camilla Kemp is a 2024 Olympic qualifier… a media star that is wearing these thermal jackets for all the right reasons.

So, whether you're doing your weekly food shop, changing after a surf, or standing on the sidelines of a netball court, there really is no right or wrong way to wear your Dryrobe in 2025. North Devon's original, popular brand has spread across the world, so maybe you can spread where you wear yours!

SPRAY FOAM REMOVAL FROM £875.00

If spray foam insulation has been installed in your property, it could affect its mortgageability when you decide to sell. The presence of spray foam between the rafters may make it difficult for potential buyers to secure a mortgage. Additionally, if left in place, spray foam can trap moisture and cause the rafters and timbers to rot over time.

Our professional roofing team can safely remove the spray foam from your roof. We will sand down the rafters, fill any damaged wood and treat it to prevent future decay. All spray foam will be carefully removed from your property and disposed of responsibly.
