ello and welcome to the May edition.

We hope you had a wonderful Easter and the children enjoyed their school break?

During the month of May we usually get two bank holidays but this year is a little different.

We will have our usual early bank holiday on Monday 2nd May but instead of the late May bank holiday, this has been pushed back a little so instead we have a four day weekend at the beginning of June. This means that Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd June add up to a long four day weekend. This is due to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. How lovely is that!

Have any of you got anything planned for the Jubilee celebrations? Street parties/garden parties? If not the Barnstaple Lions Club is holding an event on Sunday 5th June 11am4pm in Rock Park, this was featured in last month’s magazine. It sounds like a great day with music and entertainment for all the family.

Devon’s local authorities are supporting local residents who want to provide sanctuary to the Ukrainian refugees who have been forced to flee their homes.

A new website www.devon.gov.uk/ supporting-ukraine/ now hosts the latest guidance and information as it becomes available.

Team Devon, which includes Devon County Council, East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge and Torridge District Councils, West Devon Borough Council and Exeter City Council, condemned Russia's actions when it first invaded Ukraine.

The local authorities are giving particular support to families in Devon whose relatives in Ukraine are fleeing the conflict, as well as to households who volunteer to accommodate refugees.

The councils’ support of Ukraine follows their previous commitment, alongside health and voluntary sector partners and local communities, to help Syrian families and those fleeing conflict in Afghanistan.

The county council is receiving the latest information from the government on the sponsors who have registered, and DBS checks on the sponsor families are being carried out. Devon’s district authorities are using a common approach to assess each sponsor’s accommodation, which will help better assess any potential safeguarding risks.

Chair of the Devon District’s Forum Councillor Bob Deed said: “The fighting continues to have a devastating impact on civilians, and we have a moral duty to support families fleeing Ukraine to join their family members here in the UK. “There has been a huge groundswell of goodwill with many Devon residents registering to help with more registering every day, and now we are focused with ensuring that the refugees can join their families as quickly and safely as possible.

“The safety and wellbeing of those we are welcoming is one of our main priorities we have already made good progress in that regard.

“As soon as we receive new information or guidance from Government, we will post it on the website.”

People and Place - your chance to shape and influence the future of northern Devon People across northern Devon are being urged to get involved in an important and exciting project that will determine the longer term future of the area.

'People and Place' is a joint North Devon and Torridge venture to review the Local Plan which looks at how the area should take shape over the next 20+ years. It will look at what needs to be done around housing, the environment, sustainability, jobs, access to transport and health and wellbeing. The launch of the project is an opportunity for local people to outline what their priorities are for their local area and for the wider northern Devon as a whole, and what it's like to live where they live now. The councils are also seeking views on their proposals for how the community can get involved with the project moving forward.

Alongside this, the project team is starting the exercise of finding potential development sites and is looking for specialists to join a panel to look at the methodology that will be used to assess the suitability of the sites that come forward. This exercise is known as the Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (HELAA). Development could be for housing or other uses such as retail, manufacturing or warehousing. Both councils would like to hear from people about land that they know about that could provide a development opportunity in the future. The councils are particularly keen to see the reuse of sites on previously developed ‘brownfield’ land where there is an opportunity for redevelopment or to regenerate derelict sites.

Chair of the Joint Local Plan Committee Cllr Malcolm Prowse says: "Northern Devon is such a special place to live, work and visit. It is vitally important that we plan to meet the needs for development without detriment to our wonderful natural and historic environment. Many of us are worried about change but it is inevitable and with land such a finite resource we must plan positively for growth but growth that sensitively and carefully meets the needs and demands of the area."

Vice Chair of the Joint Local Plan Committee Cllr Robert Hicks says: "The significance of the People and Place project cannot be overstated. Many residents are not aware of the importance of the Local Plan in setting out sites and policies for development and only get involved when planning applications are submitted. The community and stakeholders are being encouraged to recognise that the Local Plan is a material factor in determining these applications so it is vital that we get it right. To achieve the best outcome we need the assistance of our residents in this project as they know the areas where they live and work better than anyone else.

Tapping into this knowledge will be a key aim of the consultation phase."

Celebration of Lives

During the last two years sadly many local people have passed away and, due to restrictions on funerals, their lives may not have been adequately commemorated.

In light of this South Molton Town Band and Barnstaple Male Voice Choir have decided to put on a commemorative concert: A Celebration of Lives to give an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of those who are no longer with us.

A variety of uplifting choral and brass music will be performed during the concert, to be held at Grosvenor Church, Barnstaple EX32 8PB on Saturday May 7th commencing at 7pm. Throughout the concert pictures of departed friends and loved ones will be projected for all to see and remember.

Everyone is welcome; admission is free. There will be a collection in aid of the North Devon Hospice, an organisation which has provided so much support locally. Refreshments will follow.
