5,000,000 steps Hannah & Graham Bell are organising a fundraiser.

Born at only 31 weeks meant that Florence, Benjamin and William spent their first Christmas and New Year being cared for in the Neonatal ICU at Royal Devon & Exeter and the Special Care Baby Unit at North Devon Hospital. Thanks to these two amazing teams our children were able to thrive and able to come home.

We are endlessly grateful for what NICU and SCBU have done for our family and also for the tireless work of BLISS in supporting premature babies and their families.

To say thank you, Hannah and Graham are both going to walk 5,000,000 steps between the triplets 4th and 5th birthdays (1 Dec 2021 - 30 Nov 2022). We both hope to get a lot fitter, walking an average of 13,700 steps every day and we really would love to raise as much money as we can for the people who started three very tiny babies on a journey towards becoming the strapping toddlers that they are today. Everything we raise will be split three-ways between NICU at RD&E, SCBU at NDDH and BLISS. Thank you so much for being part of this journey.

THE BRAUNTON EXPRESS Braunton Post Office

Over the last few months a number of people have approached me regarding banking services in the village. The Lloyds banking service has been slashed to a morning every fortnight from a twice weekly service leaving the village that once had several banks to one that has almost none.

Many of the banking services people are now trekking into Barnstaple for are actually available at our local post offices in Knowle, Braunton and Chivenor.

I spoke with Carol recently with regards to what is available in Braunton Post Office.

Everyday personal and business banking services available in the village include paying in cash and cheques. Whether you need to pay in the proceeds of a coffee morning, a birthday gift or something larger then all you need is the cash/cheque and your bank details (preferably a card) and it can be added to your bank account.

Cheques can be paid into virtually any account (with Nationwide being the only significant exception as it is a building society). Cheques might take a day longer to process, but avoids a long traipse into town.

As well as banking, it’s easy to pay any bill that has a barcode in at the post office. Electricity smart/keymeter cards can also be topped up as well as mobile phones. The Post Office is one of the places in the village where it is possible to withdraw cash and obtain change without paying a transaction charge.

In addition to everyday banking services the village Post Offices will send parcels up to “surf board” size and act as a drop-off point for click-n-collect deliveries.

Missed Royal Mail deliveries that are redirected to the Barnstaple sorting office can be collected from the Post Office.

Although Braunton Post Office does not provide passport services, it does do other essential and less essential services from car tax to fishing licenses and the “dog friendly” post office are always willing to ensure customers get the help they need. Oh, I’m told you can buy stamps too.

Braunton Stands with Ukraine Braunton Parish Council recently supported the Ukraine Braunton Community Response to help those fleeing Ukraine. The Council provided a grant of £1491 to help them on their quest to deliver aid which had been kindly donated by the Braunton Community.

Patrick Farrelly, a Rotarian who ‘blogged’ about their work said “We are all very grateful for the donation made by the Parish Council. It enabled us to carry out more than we would have been able to, helping us achieve all of our aims.”

We are pleased their mission was a success and the volunteers all returned safely.

Devon County Council welcomes refugees seeking a safe home in our communities and are supporting local residents who want to provide sanctuary to people fleeing Ukraine.

Jackson is a handsome eight-year-old Pomeranian cross Chihuahua.

He’s a sweet little man who takes his time to trust new people – but if you have some chicken as a treat, this is definitely the way to his heart. Once he’s ready, he enjoys a fuss and to curl up next to you for a snooze on the sofa.

ROTARY TRANSCENDS BORDERS Two Rotarians, Roger Byrom and Patrick Farrelly, from Braunton Caen Rotary Club have just returned from Hungary after delivering aid for Ukraine to a Rotary club close to the border. The experience is a fine example of the international family of Rotary working together for the better good.

It all started with a phone call from a friend, an ex-army Chairman of our local branch of the Royal British Legion, Richard Maynard, asking if we were interested in going to Ukraine. We said “yes”, our spouses said “no”. In the event we decided that we should try to raise material donations from our community and take them to Hungary, a country taking refugees but receiving little attention from the media.

Our local church, St Brannock’s, offered the use of its minibus and a long wheelbase Transit van was offered by Steven Bearman, a local plumbers merchant, along with his son-in-law, Jay, an ex Fleet Air Arm firefighter. Local agricultural suppliers, Mole Valley Farmers, funded the hire of another van, driven

by Richard’s brother, Troll and a friend Steve.

An exchange of emails with the District Governor of District László Frici Németh in Hungary connected us to the Rotary Club of Kisvarda, a small town lying some 12 miles from the border with Ukraine. This club was already heavily involved in collecting aid and sending it across the border to the Rotary Club of Uzhhorod, a similar distance into Ukraine. Further emails with an English-speaking club member elicited the kind of supplies that were required.

Thus we set up a Facebook page, “Ukraine Braunton Community Response” and produced posters which were distributed across the village detailing the requirements. The response was overwhelming. The local Tesco store was stripped of nappies, baby food and ladies’ hygiene items; members of the community bombarded us with donations, both physical and monetary.

Our aims were:

- to deliver the equipment donated by the community, - to purchase any other items needed to support the refugees, - to help if we could with moving refugees or aid, but without being a burden on our Rotary hosts or the refugee administrative organization.

Travel documentation sorted out, Covid tests registered and an estimated arrival time notified to Kisvarda, the convoy set off. Thirty three hours later we arrived in Kisvarda at 7pm to a reception group of Rotarians waiting to unload the hire van which had to return to the UK the following morning. Accommodation had been arranged for us in a nearby hotel.

The next day some twenty Rotarians, students and helpers were on hand to unload the remaining two vehicles. A human chain was set up to pass packets of nappies , boxes and other items into the warehouse. We then set about loading pallets, finally producing nineteen in total which were scheduled to be taken across the border the following week. Our first aim had been completed, delivering some six tons of aid.

That evening we were all invited to the Rotary club meeting. This was an evening speaker event with a group of teenagers reporting on a leadership course they had attended which had been sponsored by the club. A meal followed.

We set about part two of our aim the following morning, being taken to the local Tesco by our Rotarian liaison to use the monetary donations to purchase large quantities of dried and no-perishable food which were added to the pallets.

Our third aim was more difficult to achieve. Volunteer organisations and charities were already well established at the rail border crossing at Zahony and it was clear that we would only be a hindrance. We were, though, able to purchase some badly needed foodstuffs for the refugees’ kitchen. A move to another border crossing at Beregsurany proved more beneficial and the minibus was put to use for the next two days carrying refugees to destinations inside Hungary.

At this stage Rotarian Patrick and the van departed for home as there was no more good that could be done with the van, leaving Rotarian Roger and Richard. Roger had been invited to attend a District PETS/SETS conference over the weekend where he was asked to address the attendees, explaining the background to our expedition. It was very well received and applauded when the reason for choosing Hungary was explained.

Further movement of refugees took place before both Roger and Richard returned to the UK. Without doubt none of this could have been achieved so successfully without the Rotary link, across three countries. Our hosts, Kisvarda Rotary Club, went out of their way to help with advice on what was needed, to arrange our accommodation and to ensure that our stay went smoothly.

Pru Maskell – County Councillor My apologies, it has been a while since I wrote a report for this magazine. I am approaching almost a year as your County Councillor and it has certainly been a learning curve. Although lots of our meetings remain online, I do visit County Hall in Exeter for full council meetings and for some of the Scrutiny Committees. I also try to get out and about meeting as many residents as I can.

One of the best things about my new job is giving money from my locality budget to local charities and organisations looking for grants towards their work.

This year I have been able to contribute to things like, new furniture for Braunton Countryside Centre, funding for an art project for Studio Kind in Braunton, a donation towards Croyde Surf Lifesaving Club’s new clubhouse, The Hygiene Bank, One Northern Devon Culture Health and Wellbeing project, The Braunton Men’s Shed Project and Blakeford Woods Forest School.
