Hello Bideford Hi, welcome to the March edition of the ‘Link’ magazine.

Spring is nearly with us!! Flowers are starting to show in the garden and it’s definitely warmer, that’s what I keep trying to tell myself!

Check out all the events going on and the progress of the new play park in Bideford, this is the best time of year to use and enjoy our public spaces.

Remember, the clocks go forward first thing on Easter Sunday morning. Can't wait for the lighter nights to arrive, not sure about the darker mornings! The clocks changing is meant to give you longer daylight hours to work, but surely it’s just the same amount of time, just an hour later. Never could understand why!

Good progress being made on the all new Victoria Park Play Area in Bideford!

The remarkable transformation of Victoria Park Play Area in Bideford is well underway.

With the removal of old structures and equipment by local contractors, TK Play, the project has now entered its next phase. Soon, the site will be home to brand new, modern equipment, providing an exciting and safe space for children to play and explore.

The park's centrepiece, a towering structure, will provide access to a host of exciting features, including two slides, a fireman's pole, climbing walls, ladders, and other tactile equipment.

The development is being funded through Torridge District Councils capital funding programme, a generous £119k grant from Bideford Bridge Trust, a Bideford Town Council contribution of £10k, a £150k grant from the Government's Rural Prosperity Fund and private donations.

The works will continue over the coming weeks, with the park's planned opening just in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Torridge District Councillor Lyndon Piper, Lead Member for Leisure said: “The progress of the works is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the project. The cooperation between council officers and resident volunteer organisations has been instrumental in bringing the new park plans to life, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the project.”

Bideford With Spring around the corner, we are all looking forward to seeing some sunshine and brighter days. The evenings have been drawing out and we will see a difference, of course, when we put the clocks back on Sunday 31 st March (don’t forget!)

March is the month of Manor Court and at the time of writing we are looking forward to another successful Civic Function for the Town Council. Our jurors are in place and we have had a few Presentments sent in. This event is very popular with the Council, both from a staffing and Councillor point of view. It signals a new year of projects and providing a service to the electorate.

The Mayor’s Easter Bingo is all set for Friday 5th April and we will start taking bookings at the end of February, so make in a note in your diary to get in touch. We will put a reminder post out on social media and on our website. Tickets will be £10 for a 6-game book, raffle tickets and a flyer.

There will be a wealth of prizes including one for the best bunny ears being worn!

We start moving through our Council functions and events calendar quite swiftly now and are already preparing for our Annual Parish Meeting. This is an opportunity for Bideford residents to come to an open meeting and put across their point or question.

The respective Chairmen of the Committees will give a full report of the work that has been carried out during the past year, and the Mayor will sum up his year too. At the end we give the successful Grant applicants their awards (our picture shows last year’s recipients. That is on Tuesday 16th April 2024 with a 7.00pm start.

Our Community Clean Up days are back with the first one at the end of April, on Sunday 28 th and our Town Councillors will be setting up teams for different areas of the Town - both sides of the river. If you have noticed a particular grot-spot you think needs attention or would just like to get involved in your own street (perhaps set up your own team), do please let us know. It would be great if you would like to join up with one of our teams. Do please contact us. We start at 10.30am on that Sunday and finish at around 1pm. You will be surprised how much can be done in that short time.

Our D-Day 80 Beacon Lighting event is marching closer (6 th June) and we have received one or two more names for our D-Day Landing Roll Call. We will, of course, be acknowledging all those who made it possible but were not necessarily in one of the Armed Forces. But we are still asking for any names of local people who were actively involved in some way with the Landings – so whether a friend or a relative who has since passed on, we would love to hear about them. We want to include as many of our heroes as possible. Contact details at the foot of the page.

This year we have had a change around with our Mayor’s Introduction and Mayor’s Parade which will be a little bit different due to the D-Day 80 Beacon Lighting. The Mayor’s Introduction will be held on Tuesday 4th June, the Beacon Lighting on 6th June and then the Mayor’s Parade will be incorporated into Bideford Fair on Saturday 8th June. We will have more details on Bideford Fair and the Parade next month, but if you would like to book a stall or be part of Bideford Fair, do please get in touch with us.

Northam As you read this, spring will be well and truly on its way, with early flowers appearing in gardens, green spaces and road verges to brighten things up.

Some verges and green spaces the Council manages are being left uncut for longer, allowing a greater variety of plant species to establish and grow. This in turn will attract more insects, birds and animals and support the natural biodiversity of the area. This management plan drew on Devon County Council’s ‘Life on the Verge’ and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s West Country Buzz project, which has successfully seen an increase in bumble and carder bees across northern Devon, especially the rare and local Brown Banded Carder Bee. The Council has signed the Trust’s Pledge for Bumblebee Conservation, with a certificate being presented to our Mayor by the project leader, Jamie Buxton-Gould (right).

The Council has installed bird boxes in Anchor Park, Appledore. It is hoped that these boxes, which were made by the Men’s Shed in Westward Ho! will help maintain the local bird population.

The hedge at Anchor Park has been professionally laid in the traditional ‘Somerset’ style. This is helping the hedge’s growth, forming a denser structure and binding the plants together to increase their longevity.

Hedgerows provide vital resources for mammals, birds, and insect species, as well as being an important habitat, they also act as wildlife corridors.

After many months’ wait, the tennis courts in Westward Ho! are now open for booking. To comply with the grant from the LTA, bookings (currently £1/court/hr) must be made online, For details of how to book, please see the Council’s website or scan the QR code below with your smart phone.

As a reminder, the Council will be taking applications for Northam Burrows Manor Passes from 9am on Monday 4th March 2024. From then, the Council will open Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm to allow people to apply and pay for the passes in person and will remain open on that basis until the passes sell out. If you are eligible, you are urged to apply promptly, last year the Council’s allocation of 1,500 sold out in a fortnight. Further details are available on the Town Council’s website. Applications received before 9am on the 4th March will be returned unprocessed.

By popular demand, the Vikings return to the May Fair this year. The Fair will be on the 4th May, with the fun starting from 9.30 am when the Mayor will judge the fancy dress competition and decorated hat competition, on the theme of Vikings or Medieval so dig out the dressing up box and get creative!
